Now that I own a Hot Toys figure, I can personally attest to their quality but while they’ve already produced a few Iron Man collectibles, they’ve decided to put out another, mostly armor-less one. “Hot Toys is thrilled to introduce the Tony Stark (The Mechanic) Collectible Figurine after the exciting scene where Tony Stark creates homemade weapons to infiltrate The Mandarin’s mansion,” they write on Facebook. “Tony Stark in his battle damaged civilian attire in the movie, highlighting the newly developed head sculpt, an advanced body with light-up chest light and greatly detailed weapons and accessories.” Take a look.

Disney, Weinstein Working on 'Artemis Fowl' Movie

By Andrew Sims (@Sims) at 6:24 pm, July 29, 2013 | Reviewed by Karen Rought

Disney announced this afternoon that they have teamed up with producer Harvey Weinstein to develop a book-to-film adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl.

The movie will be based on the first two books in the Artemis Fowl series. The second one is titled The Arctic Incident.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix screenwriter Michael Goldenberg will handle the script for the live-action film, while actor Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal will producer alongside Weinstein.

“With its balance of mystery, adventure and family appeal, Artemis Fowl is a natural fit for Disney,” said Sean Bailey, President, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with Harvey on this exciting project.”

“Harvey is one of the preeminent producers in the industry, with impeccable taste and creative instincts,” added Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “I had a wonderful time working with Harvey during my tenure at Warner Bros., and I’m very happy to continue that relationship here at Disney.”

“If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy,” said Harvey Weinstein, Co-Chairman of The Weinstein Company. “I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film. I am thrilled to be reunited with Alan Horn who I worked with while he was at Warner Bros. and we had tremendous success with The Aviator, Starsky and Hutch and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It is also exciting to partner with friends Alan Bergman, Sean Bailey and of course Bob Iger who has been incredibly generous to me over the years. This is a special project for me because my children absolutely love this book. This story is for everyone and there is no one better than Disney to make a film that will excite people young and old.”

Artemis Fowl is an eight-part series with more than 21 million copies in print. A release date for the film has not been set.

According to Disney’s press release, the book series “is about a 12-year-old Artemis who is a millionaire, a genius – and above all, a criminal mastermind. But Artemis doesn’t know what he’s taken on when he kidnaps a fairy (Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit) to harness her magic to save his family. These aren’t the fairies of the bedtime stories – they’re dangerous.”

Obviously, Disney has high hopes for a potential new franchise in Artemis Fowl. It’s worth noting that Harvey Weinstein and Disney famously parted ways after the Weinstein brothers left Disney-owned Miramax in 2005. Weinstein attempted to buy back Miramax in 2010 but was unsuccessful.

Spike Lee’s List of Films Every Filmmaker Should See

by Germain Lussier
Martina

i have only seen 6 of these but there are like 6 that i started watching and gave up on

ahahaha i am a bad cinephile

2013spikelee1

Spike Lee has been in the news quite a bit recently. He’s got Oldboy, arguably his biggest movie ever, coming out soon, and just began a Kickstarter for his follow-up that will be “about blood and sex.” Being that he’s currently in the public eye, the director of such classics as Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X and Clockers is using the spotlight to educate fellow filmmakers. He’s released a list he gives to his NYU Graduate film students of the films he believes every filmmaker should see.

Thanks to The Playlist for the heads up on this. First, here’s Lee’s explanation.

And here’s the full list, unfortunately presented as two JPEG images.

spike-lee-essentials-list
spike-lee-essentials-list-2

Any surprises on there? Lots. Only two Steven Spielberg films, an odd Woody Allen choice, Spartacus but no 2001 for Kubrick, District 9 and Kung Fu Hustle are included, there’s plenty to discuss here. This is not the typical list.

Robert Downey Jr. Greeted By Fans While Filming Movie in Attleboro

Swarms of Robert Downey Jr. fans in Attleboro braved the rainy weather Thursday outside of Duffy Poule Funeral Home on Peck St. just to catch a glimpse of "Iron Man" himself.

"My God, it's like the whole town's out here," Downey Jr. said while signing autographs early in the afternoon. "I feel so special."

The actor's one-day stop in Attleboro was to film his new movie "The Judge."

According to IMDB.com, "The Judge," is about "a successful lawyer [who] returns to his hometown for his mother's funeral only to discover that his estranged father, the town's judge, is suspected of murder."

Slated for 2014, the film will also co-star heavyweights like Robert Duval and Billy-Bob Thorton. Crews in Attleboro said that although most of the film will be filmed in Massachusetts, it will take place in Indiana.

Downey Jr. made more than one visit Thursday to greet the Attleboro fans, who lined the sidewalk.

One fan, 4-year-old Jayden Molina made sure his voice was heard during Downey Jr's afternoon visit with fans.

"Bye Iron Man" he yelled as Downey Jr. walked off.

"When an assistant informed the “Iron Man" star he had missed signing for a young fan, Downey promptly sat down and met with the young lad."

Joshua Watson and his then-fiancée Rachel Van Der Merwe joined forces with photographer Jordan Nakamura to re-create posters of some of the couple’s favorite movies and TV shows to celebrate the pair’s nuptials. The results, as you can see, are really well done, to the point that some of the altered posters even trick Google image search.

Any future husband of mine has to be willing to do this, or the wedding’s off.

Ned Benson talks 'The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His & Hers'

Martina

cute pic!

Ned Benson has had a pretty typical life toiling on the Hollywood assembly line. Relocating to Los Angeles after graduating from Columbia in 2001, the former English major and aspiring filmmaker placed a few scripts on the industry's coveted Black List and landed work-for-hire writing jobs with some respected producers.

But as he banged out scripts for others' conventional projects, he wondered whether there weren't a different kind of movie to be made.

Or, rather, he wondered whether there weren't a different kind of movies to be made.

Film dramas, particularly those that focused on relationships, were too limiting, he thought. Over the course of 90 or 100 minutes you saw the world primarily through the perspective of one person or, at best, the diluted perspectives of two people.

To truly capture one person in a relationship you needed to see their point-of-view over a whole movie. And to truly capture the other person you needed to see their point-of-view over a second movie. So Benson set out to do what has rarely been attempted by an American filmmaker: make two movies about one relationship.

In about six weeks at the Toronto International Film Festival, Benson will unveil the fruit of his quixotic labor: “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby,” a relationship drama — or is it dramas? — he wrote and directed that seeks to unearth the truth about a fictional coupling by giving each of the main characters their own movie.

Here’s how it breaks down.

Starring Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy (and subtitled "Her" and "Him"), the two films tell of a young couple that falls in and out of love. Some of the scenes are unique to each film -- McAvoy's character may be seen talking about the relationship with a buddy in "Him"; Chastain's character could open up to a friend in "Her."

Many scenes, though, are common to both movies -- they're just shaded differently depending on whose movie you’re watching. So a word, a glance or a detail will look different, coming up as McAvoy might imagine it in “Him” than it would as Chastain sees it in “Her.”

Essentially, he’s taken the scalpel of literary subjectivity to the rich fodder of a relatable couple. By the time you've finished watching both movies, Benson hopes, you’ll have a complete if complicated picture of the relationship. Think, perhaps, of the multiple-voices conceit of “Rashomon,” the double-feature expansiveness of “Che” and the shifting narrative details of “Memento.” The films, which have not yet been bought by a U.S. distributor, are designed to be watched in succession, though in either order.

"What I wanted to capture was that feeling of looking across the table at a couple and trying to understand what their relationship is really like, and how they each experienced that relationship differently, ” Benson said in an interview.

An egghead with an unassuming air, Benson is prone to citing influences such as Nabokov or the Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski and then catching himself with a "that was really pretentious, wasn't it?" Benson says he doesn't watch a lot of studio romances, though he liked the time-jumping indie drama “Blue Valentine.”

Having failed to get far more accessible scripts off the ground, Benson got these two movies made "by the skin of my teeth," largely because unnamed private investors were taken with the double-barrel conceit. (He noted that the film is "not at all autobiographical," though, he said, he did draw on his own past relationships as well as his those of his friends.)

He shot them both at the same time in New York last year — the process took 40 days, nearly twice the length of a typical indie feature. For the scenes that would appear in both movies, he’d do one series of takes where the action was tilted toward one person, then another series of takes where the action was tilted the other way. “I think the actors really needed to have a presence of mind about which movie they were in,” he said. Then Benson spent the last year making sense of it all in the edit room.

If the premise can seem a little confounding to you, you're not alone. When the film landed on a press release for the Toronto slate Tuesday, it came with the unusual description of “work in progress.” It wasn’t, as it turns out. The description was a vestige of what Benson calls "an ongoing conversation” about the best way for the festival to screen the film(s).

The on-screen romance has taken some ambitious storytelling turns in the past few years, in movies such as “Blue Valentine” and “(500) Days of Summer”). But “Rigby” and its "Him" and "Her" conceit pose new questions. For one thing, what to call it? Is the second movie a companion piece? A sequel? A second chapter of the same story?

It’s also a sociological experiment of sorts. If you listen to both sides of a couple talk about their relationship separately, whose side would you be more inclined to identify with? The one who's the same gender as you? The closer friend? Whoever told you the story first?

Benson said that in a few small private screenings he's found that people related far more often to the character whose movie came second, regardless of whether it (or they) were male or female. “What we’re finding is that when you watch the second movie, you have the subtextuality you didn't have when you heard the first side, and that inherently makes that perspective more relatable.”

As for the best way to screen it at Toronto, Benson, festival organizers and his sales agents at WME discussed several possibilities. They could sell each ticket separately and allow filmgoers to see only one, or sell them as two tickets in a pack. In the end they decided to sell it as one ticket for a kind of double feature, with a short break in-between. (It hasn't been announced whether "Him" or "Her" will go first.)

Benson said he is open to many ways of playing the movies at festivals -- after all, that's the point of the exercise. But he did hope the films ended up with a distributor who would give them a joint theatrical run.

"I want people to go at 2 p.m. and then go again at 4 p.m. and argue about which one seemed closer to the truth," he said. Then, getting meta even for this concept, he offered, "This is a movie about the subjectivity of relationships that's also about the subjectivity of watching movies."

Some might find such formal ambition to be on the self-indulgent side. Others may feel that at a time when cinema is under attack from TV enthusiasts who say the latter form is more suited to complex storytelling, this long-form approach is refreshing, even redemptive. “I know for every person who's intrigued by it, there will be someone who lambastes me for it," Benson said. “But I just want to start a conversation.”

Fox to Build Theme Park Featuring ‘Life of Pi’, ‘Alien’, ‘Ice Age’ Attractions

by Angie Han
Martina

an alien ride would be fucking awesome

like an alien rollercoaster where xenomorphs jump out at you

also a life of pi water ride would be great

Life of Pi

Ever wanted to spend an afternoon visiting the museum of Night at the Museum or grappling with the xenomorphs from Alien? You may be able to soon, provided you’re willing to travel to Malaysia.

20th Century Fox is partnering with property conglomerate Genting Malaysia to open its first theme park, featuring attractions based on the aforementioned Night at the Museum and Alien along with several other Fox titles. The park is expected to open doors in 2016. Hit the jump for the details.

Fox announced the deal today. The 25-acre park will include 25 rides and attractions inspired by Night at the Museum and Alien, as well as PredatorLife of Pi, Ice Age, Rio, and more. Specifics on those attractions remain scarce, though the press release promises “media based rides, thrill rides, dark rides, children’s rides and water rides.”

It’ll also feature something called The Dream Parade, which brings together all of the characters and titles from throughout the park in an animatronic march. Scrat and Predator, (possibly) rubbing shoulders — imagine that. It’ll be just like Comic Con.

All of this will be part of Resorts World Genting, an existing theme park located about an hour outside of Kuala Lumpur. That destination has been operated by Genting for the past 35 years, and received around 20 million visitors last year.

The park will close down September 1 to allow construction to get underway. It’ll remain closed until the soft opening in 2016. The Fox park will cost around $125 million to build, and is part of a larger, nearly $1 billion overhaul of the Genting Malaysia resort.

The new tourist attraction marks Fox’s second attempt at launching a theme park. In 1999, it opened Fox Studios Backlot in Sydney, but shut down the place two years later. However, Fox properties have made it into other theme parks from time to time through licensing deals, such as the one struck by Disney for an Avatar land in Orlando.

The Sully Jaeger Can Protect Boo and Cancel The Apocalypse In This Pacific, Inc. Painting

i just squeal/gasped/cried

To fight monsters, the monsters created monsters. Artist James Hance recently finished this Pacific Rim and Monsters, Inc. mashup painting, in which he cast Monsters, Inc.‘s Boo as Mako Mori, somehow managing to double the adorable little girl-monster moments of each film. Still, I can’t help but think that Sully and Mike would make a terribly dysfunctional Jaeger piloting duo. You can purchase prints at Hance’s website, where he also has a number of charming mash-up illustrations featuring Doctor Who, Up, Star Wars, and other nerdy subjects available in print form.

Briefly: Earlier this week, Karl Urban was quoted as saying only the fans could make a sequel to 2012′s Dredd happen. Now that statement has been taken up a notch. An official petition has begun to circulate, as well as an official Facebook, offering fans the chance to voice their opinions and hopefully let executives know they want to see more stories of everyone’s favorite bad ass judge, jury and executioner. Click on those links for all the info.
