There are some pretty humongous fish swimming around Southeast Asia’s rivers. In fact, there are two very different species that are both contenders for the region's largest freshwater fish: the Mekong giant catfish and the giant stingray.

Exclusive: Preview Robert Rodriguez’s Frank Frazetta Museum at SXSW 2015!

by Joseph McCabe

If you’re planning to attend this month’s SXSW in Austin, Texas and you have even a passing interest in classic American illustration art, then you owe it to yourself to visit Robert Rodriguez’s Frank Frazetta Museum. This marks the second year that the director has showcased his private collection of Frazetta painted masterpieces at the arts and culture festival, and this year Rodriguez is offering a selection of hand-numbered giclée prints of some of the pieces, all of which he’s photographed and printed, available for purchase. Best of all, the proceeds from the sales of these prints–as well as that of related merchandise–will be put towards the preservation of Frank Frazetta’s art legacy.

Included amongst these works are paintings of Conan the Barbarian and Death Dealer, just two of the characters Frazetta brought to life throughout his legendary career. Also on display will be artwork from Rodriguez’s own upcoming Fire and Ice, based on Frazetta’s work, as well as an original Sin City piece by Frank Miller, Drew Struzan’s poster art for First Blood and The Thing, original paintings by pop art master Sebastian Kruger, and original movie props and painted portraits of characters from Rodriguez’s films. Also on display will be a rare self portrait Frazetta painted. And we have an exclusive look at that painting here:

Frazetta Self Portrait

Check out the invitation to the Museum below, as well as a gallery of images for the giclée prints — including one featuring poster art for Rodriguez’s vampire favorite From Dusk Till Dawn — that will be available for purchase there.

What’s your favorite Frank Frazetta masterpiece? What are you most excited about seeing at this year’s SXSW? Let us know in the comments below, and don’t forget to swing by and say hi to us at Bangers this weekend if you’re in Austin! We’ll be talking to Robert Rodriguez live in person on Saturday from 3:30-4pm!

There's a Tiny Working Planetarium Inside This Pop-Up Book

by Andrew Liszewski

Adobe recently posted a video profile of designer and paper artist Kelli Anderson that includes a sneak peek at a phenomenal new pop-up book she created. But instead of castles or magical forests rising from its pages, the book is packed full of functional 3D contraptions including a planetarium with real constellations powered by a smartphone's LED camera flash.

I Saw the Future at New York's Uncanny Smithsonian Museum

by Adam Clark Estes

It's weird to see a working Nest thermostat on display at a Smithsonian museum in Manhattan. It's even weirder to tinker with the gadget, pushing buttons and changing settings. But touching and tinkering with technology is the Cooper Hewitt future museum's specialty.

Two New Kurt Cobain Docs: Montage of Heck vs. Soaked in Bleach

by Kelly O

For me, it's gonna be really tough to beat listening to Kurt's own voice in About a Son, but I think I will definitely watch Montage of Heck because of the promise of never-seen-before home movies and family photographs. Directed by Brett Morgan for HBO, it doesn't premiere until May 4, on HBO-teevee. The doc also promises an unheard "mind-blowing 12-minute acoustic track" written by Cobain.

Soaked in Bleach seems more depressing...

... and is based on unending theories that Courtney murdered Kurt. Would Seattle police chief Norm Stamper really reopen the case if he was still in charge? REEEALLLY? That seems far-fetched, but feck, maybe I'm wrong. Exact release dates are still TBA.

Techland is rolling out an update for its zombie survival game Dying Light this week that adds a handful of new features, including a harder difficulty setting and new in-game items, as part of a free patch.
