Snoop Dogg Helped Raise $10 Million for Startup That Delivers You Weed in Under 10 Minutes

by maxplenke@me.com (Max Plenke)

Pope of the pot crusade Snoop Dogg just invested in the Seamless of weed delivery.

Snoop's venture firm Casa Verde, which makes early stage capital investments in "tech-cannabis" startups, threw its hat into a $10 million investment round for Eaze, a San Francisco-based weed courier company claiming to deliver medical marijuana in as little as 10 minutes.

This is only the second round of investments, but it marks an $8.5 million jump from the first round in November — probably because Eaze already has over 30,000 facilitated deliveries on the books since last year's launch.

The company: The Eaze website looks like any other startup retailer — links everywhere for career and partnership opportunities, an intuitive main page and mobile app — but with a twist: a big blue "Add to cart" button next to each of a long list of marijuana strains. Read More

86-Year-Old Instagram Celebrity Grandma Continues To Surprise Her Followers

by Valeriia Muradian

The year of grannies in fashion campaigns is off to a strong start. 80-year-old novelist Joan Didion kicked things off earlier this year as the model in Celine’s recent ad campaign, Joni Mitchell then became the face of YSL, and now Baddie Winkle, an 86-year-old grandmother and Instagram sensation, is the newest model for the DimePiece L.A. brand.

While our grannies still have no idea what Instagram is and why we are using it, this granny takes selfies and uses them in her model career. You can check out Bored Panda’s previous post about her here.

The dark days of streaming music are nigh

by Joel Freimark
streaming-services-over

In almost every situation, a little competition is a good thing, as it forces all involved to deliver the best possible product, and consumers can choose a best fit for their interests and lifestyle. However, if you step back and look at what’s coming down the pike in the heated battle for streaming music supremacy, fans of music are likely going to lose huge as the war begins – and we may see Taylor Swift become a modern Helen of Troy.

When Swift pulled her back catalog from Spotify just a few months ago, it made sense that she was attempting to increase sales instead of basically giving it away for free. While it seemed mostly harmless at the time, with both Apple and Tidal courting her to join their paid subscription services, the always ugly word “exclusive” is being tossed around in a manner and frequency that should make every fan of music a bit more than nervous.

Regardless of which company (if any) is able to secure the rights to her music in streaming format, it represents a clear case of the larger problem: music fans having to subscribe to multiple PAY services just to be able to hear the music they love. That’s right, we have finally gotten to the point where multi-billion dollar companies will be hoarding music, forcing music fans to either pay far too much to have full access across different platforms, or simply go without hearing music from their favorite artists.

Here is how it will likely play out:

Apple gets exclusive rights to the Taylor Swift catalog, so in turn, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Madonna and the other superstar Tidal backers pull their respective catalogs from Apple’s Beats Music Service. By that single act, you’d need to have paid subscriptions to BOTH Tidal and Apple Beats to enjoy just this handful of wildly popular artists. It goes without saying that it would then become a competition to see which company could sign the most artists the quickest.

This doesn’t even take into account the countless smaller streaming platforms that exist, nor how it could carry over into places like YouTube or even iTunes versus Google Play. Once the precedent for exclusivity is set, it will be nearly impossible to go back on, and while the companies make more and more money, it will come at the expense and enjoyment of true music fans.

The fact of the matter is, as greed once again digs its fingers deep into the world of music, fans should be prepared to make tough choices or spend more of their hard earned money than they should – because in case you forgot, the music industry cares far more about the dollars in your pocket than they do the music in your ears.

Apple Acquires LinX, A Camera Maker That Promises DSLR Performance in Phones

by Michael Zhang

iphonecamera

Apple has acquired LinX, an Israeli camera module company that is trying to revolutionize the mobile photography industry with state-of-the-art cameras that are extremely small yet powerful enough to lead “the way to DSLR performance in slim handsets.”

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple shelled out about $20 million in the deal.

LinX’s website doesn’t have too many details (nor web design), but it does have some snippets that shed some light on what the company is working on. Images on the page show three different camera modules with two, three, and four lenses, respectively.

linxheader

The company is apparently building “multi aperture imaging technology” that combines processing, sensor, and optics to improve performance in things such as “low light performance, HDR, refocusing, color fidelity, shutter lag and more.”

In addition to capturing 2D still photographs, the multi-lens cameras are able to “acquire very accurate depth information of the complete scene.”

Software can then take the 3D information captured by the camera to refocus a scene, measure the distance to objects, model 3D objects, replace backgrounds in video calls in real time, and more. The multi-lens setup could also be used to shoot with a shallow depth of field that normally can’t be achieved with smartphone cameras.

If LinX technology does get incorporated into future iPhone cameras, we could be seeing some major changes come in terms of features and quality.

Feminism Ain’t Easy: That Time Joss Whedon Used Our Tweet to Call a Jurassic World Clip Sexist

by Jill Pantozzi
Bridget

i find this interesting because the mary sue is kinda glossing over the fact that their tweet about the dude was pure objectification and the same type of objectification that we specifically -don't- want focused on female actors...but is ok to do to male actors?

BlackWidowAvengersFight

Saying ‘Joss Whedon’ and ‘feminist’ in the same sentence will get you a variety of responses. There are those who think him one of the best examples of the term while others think he shouldn’t be associated with it at all. However, I’m going to write about it today as recent events have made me realize there may be no harder thing one can choose to be than a feminist. Allow me to explain.

Let me start off by saying I love Joss Whedon. Buffy the Vampire was my EVERYTHING (yes, the original film, too). But loving Whedon doesn’t mean I should, or have to, like everything he does — in his career path or otherwise — just as being critical of something doesn’t mean you can’t also enjoy it. (A piece we published in January,”No Guilt In My Pleasures: How to Critique and Still Enjoy,” is a good one to point to here.)

Last week we were in an interesting position. It was a normal week at The Mary Sue — we posted about ridiculous reboots, revealed exclusive comic art, and showcased a young girl taking a stand against discrimination in video games. This is just a small sampling of the type of things we write about on a daily basis. We’re known for posting silly things with major GIF usage just as much as we’re known for criticizing sexism when we see it. We’re not Buzzfeed, we’re not Jezebel, we’re The Mary Sue.

Last week we did both and that day Whedon decided to call out a recently released Jurassic World clip as sexist while using one of those silly posts of ours to do it.

We’re too busy fanning ourselves to talk more about Chris Pratt in this #JurassicWorld clip. http://t.co/LZuZ45GQdw

— The Mary Sue (@TheMarySue) April 10, 2015

…and I’m too busy wishing this clip wasn’t 70′s era sexist. She’s a stiff, he’s a life-force – really? Still? https://t.co/qqts4jpSva

— Joss Whedon (@josswhedon) April 10, 2015

There’s a few things to unpack here. First, The Mary Sue doesn’t call out every bit of sexism we see in pop culture. If we did, we’d probably never sleep. Next, we don’t always agree on what’s sexist between our staff let alone our readership. A contributor post critiquing Whedon’s feminism from 2011 is brought up by our detractors whenever we celebrate something he said as some sort of “gotcha!” Newsflash, no one agrees on everything. This is all OK! But TMS has also put itself in a position of calling out things we find problematic and as such, when we fail to call something out or simply fail in holding up our own standards, we are met with a mix of anger and disappointment from our readers.

But as we need to tell ourselves when picking up news stories now and then, and something we hope our readers keep in mind, being a feminist is hard. There is no way to be a “perfect feminist.” It doesn’t exist. Also, critiques come with the job. But in the case of Whedon’s call out of Jurassic World, as a team we were wholly disappointed.

Ok, he found the scene sexist. Totally valid and worth discussing. He chose to highlight this fact using Twitter’s new quote retweet feature which showed our tweet (embedded above for clarity) to his followers, linking to the post which had a total sum of four GIFs and the phrase “Hnnnnghghghghghhhhhhhh.”

Not exactly the kind of thing you stay up at night wishing a highly successful creator you’ve looked up to for years, with over a million followers, will promote.

From our point of view, not only did Whedon’s tweet suggest we were too busy discussing how attractive an actor was to criticize the sexism he felt was obvious, it also felt like he was policing our right to have those thoughts in the first place (which is another seriously problematic issue when discussing feminism). And then, as the internet news machine often does, Whedon’s tweet was picked up by no less than 25 entertainment and news websites; Time, The Hollywood Reporter, and The Guardian among them. Some of these articles mentioned we were a feminist site, some ignored us completely. And hey, great! Joss Whedon follows us on Twitter and linked to our site! Super cool. But we would have loved it if he used his status and position of privilege to elevate a few other posts we did that week as well. For instance, our exclusive which revealed “Comixology’s Recent Marvel Sale Boasted 7 Out of 10 Female-Led Titles in the Top 10” or perhaps “Invisible Women: Why Marvel’s Gamora & Black Widow Were Missing From Merchandise.”

Now, this isn’t to get into the “you should be talking about more important things!!” scenario we often hear when trying to criticize entertainment, people should criticize whatever they feel needs to be criticized whenever they want and no one’s response should be “there are starving children somewhere.” (Seriously, if that’s your only response to a critique, get off the internet and go help the starving children.) Also, this is Twitter and I know I personally miss a lot on a daily basis so I don’t fault him for not seeing those other pieces but did Whedon realize what he was doing by using our tweet for his purpose?

Badass Digest interviewed the director during the Avengers: Age of Ultron junket about his call out:

BD: You’re one of the few people willing to engage that. You’re releasing a billion dollar movie, which means you need to appeal to the widest audience as possible, but you’re also being vocal in your beliefs. A lot of people in your position are not. This week you came out and criticized Jurassic World’s clip – which I thought was terrific of you – which is maybe not the politically expedient way to approach it.

Whedon: You know, I honestly think that was bad form. I literally forgot that I don’t do that. I literally just went… I was so shocked! Honestly, I was shocked! Like a dowager – “Oh, good lawd!”

Whedon sees his tweet as “bad form” to a fellow director/Hollywood project but doesn’t seem to acknowledge that it’s weird for a man to call out a feminist website on their feminism, whether that was his intention or not. If he wanted to comment on the clip he could have easily linked straight to its YouTube link but again, he saw a thing in front of him, he commented. That’s what we all do. But it affected us in a major way.

Some more context: no one but the individual gets to decide what a person is allowed to be offended by. You’d think that goes without saying but without fail, every time we post about something WE are personally offended by, we have others saying “how dare you tell me what I can or can’t like.” Hey, internet citizen with keyboard access, we’re not! Say whatever you want but I will never stop telling you The Mary Sue writers are passionate people. When they write about something with vigor, you can be assured they genuinely have strong feelings about it. We do not write stories to “cause controversy” as many have accused us of in the past.

One day last week we posted about a comic illustration we felt was in poor taste for several, clearly identified reasons. Some people responded by telling us we needed to learn to take a joke. Others told our writer to drink bleach. A few days later we had “fun” with the Jurassic World clip and the response was “stop making jokes, this is serious!” Even simply calling a thing “not that great” will bring harsh words to your doorstep, but this brings us back to the point: being a feminist is hard. Even Whedon’s tweet was met with a mix of “yeah, you’re right, this is sexist!” to “hey, remember that time you had Loki call Black Widow a mewling quim?” You can’t “win.”

But that doesn’t mean you stop speaking up when you feel you should.

More from the Badass Digest interview:

BD: Do you think it’s generally important for you to speak out?

Whedon: Yes and no. I don’t think I should have tweeted about that movie; there are plenty of other things that bother and offend me in movies and I usually don’t tweet about them unless the movie is old, long over, I don’t want to be knocking ‘The Other Guy.’ I don’t want to set myself up as the arbiter of awesome. I was shocked, and I thought, ‘Come on, we can do better than this.’ I didn’t say the movie was a problem, just the clip. And having worked on a film of one of Crichton works, that’s sort of how that formula operates. But as a quasi-celebrity it’s uncouth of me to attack somebody else’s material.

But to speak up politically? It’s both necessary and damaging. It’s necessary because there’s so much that’s horrifying in our world, and so much that needs to be done. Not to say something about, I feel, is kind of morally bankrupt. At the same time, as an artist? It’s the worst thing I can do, because everything I make gets judged by that standard. “This movie isn’t feminist enough!” Well, this movie is about people, it’s not a polemic. It’s going to come from me, and I have everything in me – including that inchoate rage that wants to attack everybody. Once you define yourself, your art becomes more limited. If I could do it all again and remain anonymous… I don’t know that I would.

It never occurred to me that championing equality for women was going to be controversial. When I retweeted Anita Sarkeesian, it wasn’t because I was on a soap box. I was like, ‘This is interesting guys, check it out!’ I had no idea what I was stepping into… and I’m not sorry I did. Since the damage is done, I’m going to continue to speak when I think it’s appropriate. And occasionally when I don’t!

Some great points there but it’s also important to note that sometimes when you think you’re “championing women” you’re actually hurting women in the process, and that’s something every ally needs to consider. Also, being an ally/feminist means you’re a “work in progress” and that you can always learn more and do more while striving to be more supportive and inclusive. Once again, there is no “perfect feminist.”

So no, The Mary Sue isn’t going to stop criticizing things we feel should be criticized. We’re also not going to stop acting ridiculous. That’s just who we are. Would we love to see people talking about and sharing things like our Game Changer series, transgender issues, diversity in our media, or the amazing work being done by women in the comics industry just as much, if not more than, the “negative” things we see in the world? Absolutely.

We’re also going to keep hoping for major news outlets to listen when everyone talks about sexism, not just famous Hollywood directors on the eve of their superhero sequel.

Do you follow The Mary Sue on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, & Google +?

Why Was the 73-Year-Old Reserve Deputy Who Fatally Shot Eric Harris in Oklahoma Even Carrying a Gun?

by Allie Conti

[body_image width='640' height='483' path='images/content-images/2015/04/14/' crop='images/content-images-crops/2015/04/14/' filename='why-was-the-73-year-old-reserve-deputy-who-fatally-shot-eric-harris-even-carrying-a-gun-012-body-image-1429033497.jpg' id='45979']Robert Bates. Photo courtesy Tulsa County Sheriff's Department

Eric Harris sprinted underneath an Oklahoma sky that looked straight out of the movie Twister. Trailing behind were cops who said he had sold a firearm to an undercover officer. One took him down. Moments later, a 73-year-old reserve deputy named Robert Bates pulled out his handgun and shot Harris in the back at close range.

"He shot me! He shot me, man!" the 44-year-old can be heard yelling in video taken April 2 but only released to the public a week later. "Oh my God. I'm losing my breath."

"I shot him!" Bates exclaims, realizing his mistake. "I'm sorry."

On Monday, Bates, a former insurance executive and buddy of Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz, was indicted for second-degree manslaughter. On Tuesday, he surrendered at the Tulsa County Jail. Meanwhile, the cops are sticking with the story that he had mistaken his handgun for a Taser by accident.

"He made an error," Sheriff Glanz told local paper Tulsa World. "How many errors are made in an operating room every week?"

At first brush, the incident seems like just another instance of a white cop freaking out and shooting a black man dead—whether by accident or not. But Harris's family says that the case doesn't have anything to do with race.

Regardless of whether that's true, the Tulsa tragedy poses a question unique to the recent string of shooting deaths: What, exactly, was a senior citizen civilian doing with a gun?

There are approximately 140 reserve deputies in Tulsa County, Meredith Baker, general counsel to Sheriff Glanz, explained to me in an email. All of them are equipped to carry both Tasers and guns, and Bates was assisting with the Violent Crimes Task Force on the day of the incident. That number isn't totally unusual, according to Doug Wyllie, editor-in-chief of the cop forum PoliceOne.com. The economic downturn forced a big increase in reserve officers, whose assistance has helped some departments avoid closing entirely in recent years, Wyllie said.

However, the budget for the Tulsa County Sheriff's Department has actually been on the uptick since Bates came on board in 2009, records show. The department's budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year was $8.6 million, according to county records. In 2010-2011 it was nearly $9.1 million. That same number for 2014-2015 was $9.8 million.

If concerns about money don't explain why a 73-year-old was assisting on the Violent Crimes Task Force, politics might.

According to an April 2010 Tulsa World story that is not available online, Sheriff Glanz spent more than $12,000 in county funds to take Bates and a chief deputy to a five-day conference of the National Sheriff's Association that was being held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The county footed the bill for airfare, meals, and accommodations at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. At the time, Glanz told the local paper that Bates had been assisting with the drug task force for about a year and a half and "as a reward I asked him if he would like to go."

Bates also donated several cars to the department. In 2012, he even headed up Glanz's re-election campaign and donated $2,500 to the cause.

According to Tulsa County Sheriff's Department Major Shannon Clark, "There are lots of wealthy people in the reserve program. Many of them make donations of items. That's not unusual at all." She even told the LA Times, "He isn't the only millionaire we've got."

But Wyllie of PoliceOne says that while it might be normal in Tulsa, the trend there doesn't extend nationwide.

"That type of cronyism isn't common at all," he told me. "The programs that I'm aware of are actually really very stringent and highly selective and in many cases the reservists do more training than the full-time counterparts, because they're the people who wanna get on the job. They wanna become more attractive job candidates, so they're eager to be the best cop on the shift."

In an interview this week with the Tulsa World, a reporter raised concerns to Sheriff Glanz that Bates was too old to be a wielding cop. In response, he whipped out his cell phone to show off a picture of him and Bates hanging out an area lake.

"Bob and I both love to fish," Glanz explained. "Is it wrong to have a friend?"

How Nirvana Unintentionally Ruined Rock and Roll

by tom@mic.com (Tom Barnes)

From day one, everything about Nirvana screamed rock legend, and it's a legend that's persisted. The trio perfected the angst-filled rebellion anthem, to the point where they're still the archetype for tortured rock stars. To this day, the band is lionized as the ideal in new books and documentaries "often rehashing the same ideas and now-iconic photos," as Pitchfork wrote with a sneer last March.

Nirvana is the last true rock phenomenon. But their massive success came at a price. The band proved grungey alternative rock could be big business, incidentally opening the door for the Nickelbacks and Creeds of the world to dominate the airwaves. Nirvana's genius turned rock into a billion-dollar industry — something the genre may never recover from.
