DANIEL CLOWES AT MELTDOWN COMICS
Launch Party for The Complete Eightball

Daniel Clowes will be at making his first Los Angeles appearance in several years at Meltdown Comics on June 5th to celebrate the release of The Complete Eightball, a two-volume collection of the influential and iconic comic book series, from Fantagraphics Books.

On Friday, June 5th, from 6-10 PM, Meltdown will be opening its Los Angeles doors to fans new and decades strong for a night complete with prizes, a book signing, costume contest, and an interview between Clowes and Mark Frauenfelder from Boing Boing.

Creator of touchstone stories such as “Ghost World”, “Art School Confidential” and “Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron”, Daniel Clowes changed the landscape of comics when he began publishing Eightball with Fantagraphics Books in 1989. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of its release, and celebrate the future, the biggest comic book retailer in California, Meltdown Comics, is pulling all the stops for this one-night-only engagement. Meltdown and Clowes’s relationship dates back over 20 years, when Clowes created the venerable Meltdown mascot, Mel, in the early days of the store.

From Associate Publisher, Eric Reynolds says, “It was literally unfathomable for us to consider any Daniel Clowes / Complete Eightball event schedule that didn’t include Meltdown Comics. I don’t know if there’s a bookseller in the country that has done more to promote Eightball and the work of Daniel Clowes over the past two decades. This is going to be a barnburner.”

WHO: Cartoonist Daniel Clowes
WHAT: Signing The Complete Eightball
WHERE: Metldown Comics – 7522 Sunset Blvd, LA, CALIF
WHEN: Friday, June 5th from 6-10 PM

3D Printing Gives a Turtle its Life Back with Titanium Jaw Implants

by Kyle Hill

We’ve given under-developed puppies new legs, injured bald eagles new beaks, and now, again thanks to 3D printing, we’ve given a sea turtle new titanium jaws.

Recently in Turkey, an almost lifeless Caretta caretta or loggerhead sea turtle — dubbed AKUT3 — was brought in to the Sea Turtle Research, Rescue and Rehabilitation Center at Pamukkale University (PAU) missing most of its lower jaw in what appeared to be a run-in with a boat propeller. The 45-kg sea turtle was eventually nursed back to health by the Center via force feeding, but the injuries to its jaws were bad enough to make reintroduction to the wild impossible.

TurtleJaw_1The loggerhead was in bad shape.

Turkish R&D corporation BTech Innovation, who specializes in 3D printing medical prostheses and implants, stepped in to help (for free). Working with veterinarians and surgeons, BTech first generated models of AKUT3’s skull with CT scans. Next, those models were used to 3D print the medical-grade titanium implants that would restore AKUT3’s ability to feed.

TurtleJaw_2The design of the jaws had a head start, as they were loosely based on human models, but the design process still took a full two months to complete.

An audience of surgeons and veterinarians watched the hours-long surgery that took place last April. Thankfully, AKUT3 — perhaps the first turtle to ever benefit from a 3D-printed prosthesis — pulled through and showed no signs of rejecting the implants over two weeks after the surgery.

TurtleJaw_5

Still recovering from the procedure but faring well, AKUT3 will hopefully be released back into the sea later this year.

Jack's back in Tekken 7

by Michael McWhertor
Bridget

he's watermelon colored! the big question is if bowling is back

Tekken 7 is getting another new fighter, Bandai Namco revealed today: the ever-evolving Russian robot known as Jack.

This year's model is Jack-7, and he'll be added to the arcade game on May 19 in Japan. The latest version of Jack, who's been around in various incarnations since the original Tekken, sports a pink metal mohawk and green interior lighting — a rather garish combination.

You can see Jack-7 in action in the video above, in which he jackhammers fellow automaton Alisa.

Developer Bandai Namco revealed another returning fighter, Yoshimitsu, for Tekken 7 last week.

Bridget

“My perception of the world made me feel a more acute form of the strangeness of things. In the silence and immensity, each object was cut off by a knife, detached in the void, in limitless space, separated from other objects. By the very fact of being alone, without any link with the environment, it began to exist. I felt as if I had been thrown out of the world, outside life, as if I were a spectator of some endless, chaotic film in which I could not take part. I knew not how to reach for anything.”

Honey bees are critical not just to the ecosystem, but to our agricultural business. It’s thought that they contribute an estimated $10 billion annually to the economy through pollinating crops. But the plight of the honey bee is in a dire state. Over the past few decades, the number of honey bees has declined by a shocking 60% in the United States alone.
