There’s traditionally a brief two-year gap between the works of Christopher Nolan. (The lone exception being the long three years between 2002’s Insomnia and 2005’s Batman Begins or the one year separating that and 2006’s The Prestige.) However, the blockbuster director, who recently took us to far away solar systems in last year’s Interstellar, will return next month with a new short film.
Titled Quay, the smaller scale project finds Nolan shifting his focus from big ideas to small geniuses, specifically Stephen and Timothy Quay. The Pennsylvania-born and London-based identical twins have turned plenty of heads with their stop-motion work, from 1986’s Crocodiles to 1991’s The Comb to 2001’s In Absentia. Those three films, in addition to Nolan’s short, will screen next month in New York City at Film Forum’s The Quay Brothers – In 35 MM commemoration.
(Dissected + Ranking: The Films of Christopher Nolan)
Nolan curated the three films himself and will attend the premiere of Quay, where he’ll also take part in a Q&A following the short. The event takes place on Wednesday, August 19th at the Film Forum. Tickets are $13 for non-members and are currently on sale here.

Eight beautiful puppies were recently fathered by the world’s largest pit bull, Hulk. Owned by Marlon and Lisa Grennan, founders of Dark Dynasty K9s in New Hampshire, USA, Hulk is being trained to be a protection dog. The puppies, if also trained to be elite protection dogs, could fetch up to $55,000 per pup.
“Their papa isn’t a legend for no reason but the potential to have another record-breaking world famous dog amongst his puppies is definitely there,” Mr. Grennan told Daily Mail. “Most of them are already sold. That’s just how well thought of Hulk’s bloodline is thought of.”
Dark Dynasty K9’s is a breeder specializing in protection dogs. Marlon trains each dog personally from birth, and the dogs live together in a pack “without fences, barriers or physical restrictions.” The dogs are so well trained that that they are even permitted to interact with the Grennan’s three-year-old son, Jordan.

First featured in HF Vol 34, artist Click Mort takes vintage ceramic figurines and "recapitates" them into whimsical characters spawned from his imagination. In his latest series on view at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, the artist takes influences from his own dreams and nightmares. His exhibition "Delirium Tremens" is named after a psychotic condition typical of withdrawal in chronic alcoholics, which often involves hallucinations. Considering this, while his works are infused with nostalgia and humor, one cannot ignore a certain melancholy in them.

“A house I pass on the way to work has this sculpture in its yard. Its about 8 feet tall.”
“HELLO NEIGHBOR STEVE, I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE YOU TO BARBEQUE ON THE EVE OF THE BLOOD MOON. I FEEL WE GOT OFF TO A BAD START.”
“NEIGHBOR STEVE, DO YOU NOT WISH TO PARTAKE OF THE UNCLEAN FLESH-MEATS OF PIGS AND THE POLLUTED ESSENCES OF TOMATO? PERHAPS YOU ARE A CAROLINA STYLE MAN, NEIGHBOR STEVE?”
“PUT THE GUN AWAY NEIGHBOR STEVE, YOU KNOW I SHALL ONLY RISE AGAIN WITH THE DAWNING OF THE MOON. WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS MANY TIMES.”
“LOOK AT THIS PICTURE MY SON DREW OF YOU AND CHILD TIMMY, YOUR SON. ARE THEY NOT THE PICTURE OF PACT-MATES? THIS COULD BE YOU AND ME, NEIGHBOR STEVE.”
“YOU MISSED THE UNHOLY NEXUS OF POWER THAT IS THE KEY TO MY CORPOREAL FORM, NEIGHBOR STEVE. YOU WILL NEED TO RELOAD NOW, SO I WILL GO INSIDE TO MY HELL-WIFE AND PUT YOU DOWN AS A SOLID ‘MAYBE’.“
I have the feeling that the families get along great except for Steve. Like, the wives are baking (questionable) brownies together, the kids are playing together, Antler Guy occasionally takes Son and Timmy to school (no car, just carries them in huge swinging strides through a nexus of ungoldly sights in a swirling netherworld shortcut. Sometimes they stop for McDonalds). Hell-wife gave them a potted Audrey Jr., Steve’s wife (who I now christen Sharon) gave them a begonia.
One time Steve tries throwing holy water but all Antler Guy does is thank him, saying that no, Antler Guy isn’t Catholic but it’s the thought that counts, he is so kind to water his creeping deathshade vines regardless.
For Christmas Antler Guy gives Steve a case of ammunition. To be funny/sarcastically mean Steve gets Antler Guy the world’s most hideous Christmas sweater, singing light-up reindeer included. He immediately regrets it because not only does Antler Guy love it and wears it for several months, it will never need batteries because Antler Guy powers it with his own eldritch aura.
When they come back from a holiday to Hawaii, Steve is horrified to find out Sharon bought them matching Hawaiian shirts. He is even more horrified that his wife means it that if he doesn’t wear it he will forever sleep on the couch.

Don Joyce, member of the experimental “culture jammers” known as Negativland, has died at the age of 71. The band’s de facto vocalist, Joyce passed away in Oakland, California due to heart failure.
When a mutual friend and band member, Ian Allen, brought Negativland into Joyce’s radio studio one day, they took over his radio show. Joyce was so impressed by their antics and creativity that he ended up joining the band. It was Joyce who helped birth the idea of repurposing found audio, long before hip-hop or electronics producers would trade in sampling. He would cut up and edit audio snippets alongside his own yelps and yells, creating what was essentially the voice of the band.
“Don Joyce’s singular editing style was laced with profundity and silliness in equal measure,” the band wrote in a Facebook post announcing Joyce’s death. “His work was that of a dada humanist, able to wring unforgettable sentiments and statements out of material which originally spoke something entirely different. Hugely inspired by both the droll radio of Bob and Ray and the reckless free-form of the Firesign Theatre, he created a wicked language of repurposed purple prose which has inspired legions of other collage artists over the past three decades. He was the father of the form.”
Joyce is the second member of Negativland to pass away this year; Ian Allen died in January follow complications from heart valve surgery. Despite their losses, Negativland is determined to carry on. They promise “two nearly-completed albums” are in the works, with the possibility of more live shows.
Below, read the band’s entire message from Facebook, followed by some samples of the band’s work.
Goat Simulator, the delightfully bizarre joke-turned-game from Coffee Stain Studios, is coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 Aug. 11, port developer Double Eleven announced today.
The console debut of Goat Simulator came in April, when a port of the Windows PC original launched on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Double Eleven also handled the Xbox versions, and "worked closely with Coffee Stain to ensure that we made a faithful reproduction," a representative for the studio told Polygon in March.
Just like the Xbox versions of Goat Simulator, the PlayStation ports will support local splitscreen co-op: two players on PS3 and four players on PS4. The game's PlayStation versions will feature the exclusive debut of a mode that Double Eleven is...

Prepare yourselves for a fantastic adventure! In fact it’s not just fantastic, it’s epic. It’s “Epic Bunny’s Adventure,” an awesome video created by Russian filmmaker Michael Tivikoff of the Mr.TVCow YouTube channel. Two wizards are engaged in desperate battle against evil forces. One sends the other off on a quest destined to become the stuff of legend. You see, that other wizard happens to be an adorable bunny rabbit. But don’t underestimate this black and white bun. His cuteness is equalled only by his capacity for derring-do. But enough description already, Epic Bunny awaits (and there are kittens too!):
