‘Kill Bill 3’ is “Definitely in the Cards”, According to Quentin Tarantino

by Chris Evangelista

kill bill 3

Quentin Tarantino loves to talk about potential projects. I like to imagine he has an entire file cabinet filled with them, and whenever he’s feeling frisky he pops it open to give us a tease. The filmmaker swears that he’s retiring from directing, but he also has several possible films he may or may not make – like a Star Trek movie, for instance. And then there’s Kill Bill 3, a project he’s been teasing for many, many years. And he’s apparently still thinking about it. Tarantino recently revealed that a third volume in the Kill Bill story is “definitely in the cards”, but it won’t happen for a while – if it happens at all.

That scamp Quentin Tarantino is at it again. During an interview with Andy Cohen, the filmmaker teased the possibility of another Kill Bill movie. “I just had dinner with Uma Thurman last night,” Tarantino said. “We were at a really cool Japanese restaurant. I do have an idea of what I would do with [Kill Bill Vol. 3]. That was the whole thing, conquering the concept. What has happened to The Bride since then? And what do I want to do?” He continued:

“I didn’t just want to come up with some cockamamie adventure. [The character] doesn’t deserve that. The Bride has fought long and hard. I have an idea now that could be interesting. I still wouldn’t do it for a little bit. It would be at least three years from now. It is definitely in the cards.”

Over the summer, Tarantino told GQ: “Me and Uma have talked about it recently, frankly, to tell you the truth. I have thought about it a little further. We were talking about it literally last week. If any of my movies were going to spring from my other movies, it would be a third Kill Bill.”

The Kill Bill films remain some of Tarantino’s most popular, and he’s been talking up a potential third entry for years now. As you may recall, there’s a scene in Kill Bill Vol. 1 where Thurman’s The Bride fights, and kills, one of the people who wronged her – Vernita Green (Vivica A. Fox). Vernita’s death was witnessed by her daughter, Nikki.

“It was not my intention to do this in front of you,” the Bride says. “For that I’m sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it comin’. When you grow up, if you still feel raw about it, I’ll be waiting.” Tarantino has hinted that a third entry could involve the grown-up Nikki finally taking the Bride up on her offer, and trying to get revenge.

But Tarantino has also said that a third film might not happen after all. As recently as 2012, the filmmaker stated: “I don’t know if there’s ever going to be a Kill Bill Vol. 3. We’ll see, probably not though.” In other words: this could happen, but don’t hold your breath.

Time will tell if Tarantino makes good on a potential third Kill Bill film. For now, he’s working on a novel, a play, and a TV series, and he’s also about to become a father, so he’s a bit busy.

Corellium Responds to Apple Lawsuit, Claims its iOS Virtualization Software Helps Apple

by Juli Clover
Apple in August filed a lawsuit against Corellium, a mobile device virtualization company that supports iOS, with Apple accusing Corellium of copyright infringement for replicating the operating system that runs on the iPhone and iPad.

As noted by Motherboard, Corellium today filed its response to Apple's lawsuit, accusing the Cupertino company of owing $300,000 and claiming that its software helps Apple by making it easier for security researchers to track down iOS bugs.

A virtual iPhone on Corellium's website used as evidence in Apple's lawsuit against the company
According to Apple, Corellium's product infringes on its copyrights by creating digital replicas of iOS, iTunes, and other apps and software. "Corellium has simply copied everything: the code, the graphical user interface, the icons - all of it, in exacting detail," reads Apple's lawsuit.

Corellium designed its software to create virtual iOS devices able to run iOS, and has encouraged researchers and hackers to use it to find and test vulnerabilities.

According to Corellium, Apple's code in its product is "fair use" and the software makes the world better by allowing security researchers to look into iOS, find flaws, and inform Apple so the bugs can be fixed.

Corellium argues it's easier for researchers to find and test bugs in iOS using virtual instances of iOS rather than physical devices. With this lawsuit, says Corellium, Apple is aiming to control who is allowed to find vulnerabilities in its software. This is a position that is also supported within the security community, according to Motherboard, and many security researchers were surprised by Apple's initial lawsuit.
Through its invitation-only research device program and this lawsuit, Apple is trying to control who is permitted to identify vulnerabilities, if and how Apple will address identified vulnerabilities, and if Apple will disclose identified vulnerabilities to the public at all.
One of Corellium's key arguments is that its customers are seeking bugs with the intention of alerting Apple of their existence, which Motherboard points out is just an assumption and, based on evidence, not true. One customer highlighted in Corellium's legal response, for example, is Azimuth, a company that does not report bugs to Apple.

Instead, Azimuth sells hacking tools based on those bugs to law enforcement and intelligence agencies in countries like the United States and Canada.

Corellium also argues that Apple has known about the company for years and has been friendly to Chris Wade, one of Corellium's founders. Corellium says that Wade was invited to join Apple's bug bounty program. Wade has since reported seven bugs to Apple without receiving payment, which is why Corellium argues that Apple owes $300,000.

Apple declined to provide Motherboard with a comment on Corellium's legal response. Apple is continuing to seek a permanent injunction to prevent Corellium from offering a product that replicates iOS. Apple also wants Corellium to destroy all infringing materials that it's collected, and pay Apple damages, lost profits, and attorney fees.

New ‘Birds of Prey’ Posters Bring Plenty of Color into Harley Quinn’s Life, New Trailer Arrives Tomorrow

by Ethan Anderton

Birds of Prey Posters

This week brings Joker to theaters, and along with the debut of the Clown Prince of Crime’s origin story, we’ll be getting a proper glimpse at the upcoming spin-off focusing on his Clown Princess of Crime, the totally insane Harley Quinn. A new trailer for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will arrive tomorrow morning, but first, we have a batch of bright new Birds of Prey posters that finally bring a welcome amount of color to the dingy DC Extended Universe’s color scheme, and Margot Robbie looks like she’s having a blast.

Fandango debuted the new Birds of Prey posters online and announced the arrival of a new trailer tomorrow morning. Not only are these posters awesome, but they look like Harley Quinn should be hosting Saturday Night Live.

All of these promo posters seem to be avoiding the longer official title of the movie, unless Warner Bros. Pictures has simply decided to just call the movie BOP HQ, which sounds like a new store that sells inflatable furniture, karaoke machines and bright colored hair ties. But even so, we love the imagery being used to sell this movie so far. Of course, we thought the same thing when the Suicide Squad marketing campaign came along, and we all know how that went.

Birds of Prey has a lot of anticipation surrounding it, mostly because Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn was by far the best thing about the mess that was Suicide Squad. Now that she has a girl gang assembled to deal with some other bad guys in the criminal underworld of Gotham City, we’re excited what she can do when she’s the leader of the pack and going full tilt crazy without The Joker keeping her on a leash.

Birds of Prey, is directed by Cathy Yan and also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, and Ewan McGregor. Here’s the official synopsis for the movie coming next year.

Four years after the events of Suicide Squad, Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City unprotected from crime, and Harley Quinn has left the Joker. When Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help protect her.

Birds of Prey opens in theaters on February 7, 2020.

‘The Politician’ Trailer: High School Politics is a Dangerous, Cutthroat Game

by Ethan Anderton

The Politician Trailer

Take the attitude of Glee, the rich world of Cruel Intentions, and the wit of Clueless, and you’ve got the new Netflix original comedy series The Politician from executive producer Ryan Murphy.

Pitch Perfect co-star Ben Platt leads the series as a wealthy student who has dreams of being the President of the United States of America. But for now, he has to deal with the cutthroat world of high school politics as he tries to become student body president. As you’ll see in The Politician trailer below, this dark comedy will stab you in the back while shaking hands and kissing babies.

The Politician Trailer

Not unlike Ryan Murphy’s other shows Glee and American Horror Story, this series takes place in a world with a heightened sense of reality. It’s not the real world, but it’s grounded enough to keep you on your feet, and zany enough to allow for some amusing dark comedy. This has the vibe of the indie comedy Assassination of a High School President, but it’s a little bit more over the top.

The big question is whether this series will have any overt ties to what’s happening in our real political climate right now. Often, these kind of shows take cues from the real world political scene in order to fuel their storylines, and this show just might have the satire that can properly mock the current administration without relying on straight-up parody like the sketches of Saturday Night Live.

There’s an impressive ensemble cast on display here, including veterans like Jessica Lange and Gwyneth Paltrow, and talented young stars like Zoey Deutch and Lucy Boynton, as well as Julia Schlaepfer, Laura Dreyfuss, Rahne Jones, Theo Germaine, David Corenswet, Bob Balaban and Benjamin Barrett.

Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), a wealthy student from Santa Barbara, California, has known since age seven that he’s going to be the President of the United States. But first he’ll have to navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School. To get elected Student Body President, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully crafted image. Full of dark comedy and sly satire, Ryan Murphy’s The Politician offers a rare glimpse into just what it takes to make a politician.

The Politician arrives on Netflix on September 27, 2019.

‘Mission: Impossible II’ and the Final Bastion of Hollywood Villains Being Coded as Gay

by Ariel Fisher

Gay Villains in Hollywood

(Welcome to Queering the Scene, a series that explores LGBTQ themes and content in films of all kinds…especially where you least expect it.)

Queer representation in cinema has often been problematic. As a result of queer coding, the LGBTQ+ community was often portrayed as violent, threatening, and abhorrent, an active threat to civilized heteronormative society. But queer coding isn’t a new concept. In fact, its roots lay deep within film history.

Those roots will eventually take us to Mission: Impossible II of all things. But first, we need to look back. Far back.

A Quick History Lesson

Some of the earliest depictions of homosexuality on film can be traced back to two men dancing in William Kennedy Dickson’s 1895’s film The Dickson Experimental Sound Film, often referred to as The Gay Brothers. The short subverted expectations of typical male behavior, shocking moviegoers. At the end of the 19th century and into the 1920s and ’30s, we started to see the coding that would become so damaging to queer representation in Hollywood, rooted primarily in gender-based stereotypes. Terms like sissy, pansy, limp-wristed, and light in the loafers or walking with mincing steps became commonplace when describing gay people, while lesbians were often associated with deep voices, masculine clothing, and typically masculine jobs.

When the film industry picked up in the 20s and 30s, you started to see work produced with lewd and shocking subject matter like violence and prostitution that was often connected directly to queer representation. It was all in an effort to get people back to the theatre, but it caused a huge uproar from the general public. This all lead to boycotts, religious fervor, and, eventually, the Hays Code.

The Motion Picture Production Code, also known as the Hays Code, was one of the first instances of censorship within the film industry in the US. It was founded based on the concept that “if motion pictures present stories that will affect lives for the better, they can become the most powerful force for the improvement of mankind,” implying they also had the potential to cause great harm. Given the retaliation and vitriol that came from religious groups following portrayals of sexuality, violence, or queerness, they wanted to fight against the moral corruption of US citizens and their children. The three general principals of the code were as follows:

  1. No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin.
  2. Correct standards of life, subject only to the requirements of drama and entertainment, shall be presented.
  3.  Law, natural or human, shall not be ridiculed, nor shall sympathy be created for its violation.

For the most part, these were just suggestions, and there were no legal ramifications for failing to adhere to the Code. However, if you didn’t, your film would never see the light of day. As a result, the Hays Code directly influenced all of the content created in the early 20th-century film industry – well, until it was dismantled and replaced by a rating system in the 1960s.

Unfortunately, the damage was done. The Hays Code meant that, while you couldn’t have lewd subject matter in your film in any overt way, you could be clever and include it covertly. As a result, we started to see queer coding, the process whereby characters are given typically queer traits or behaviors as a means of suggesting they’re not heterosexual or cisgendered without having to actually say so. In some instances, this was done as a means of covertly including queer characters. Predominantly? Coding was used as a means of portraying gay characters as superfluous or downright villainous.

This kind of coding aligns queer characters with villainy, debauchery, and the downfall of civilized society. We saw this with Peter Lorre’s character, Joel Cairo, in The Maltese Falcon, arguably one of the earliest examples of overt queer coding of a villain. In the book, Cairo is a gay man, without question. But if John Huston wanted his film to get made and see release, Cairo’s gayness had to be played subtly, never actually calling a spade a spade.

Alfred Hitchcock was no stranger to queer coding his villains, arguably using the technique in 10 of his films: Martin Landau’s Leonard in North By Northwest, Robert Walker’s Bruno in Strangers On A Train, John Dall’s Brandon and Farley Granger’s Philip in Rope (admitted by out screenwriter Arthur Laurents to be “obviously about homosexuals”), Anthony Perkins’ Norman Bates in Psycho, and Judith Anderson’s Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca, to name a few.

Then there’s Disney, the ruling class of queer coding. As kids, we were given Scar, Hades, Ratigan and a slew of other male villains who were largely coded as somehow not quite manly enough. Their lack of conventional masculine traits and vaguely effeminate mannerisms meant you could easily portray them as villains because they defied the status quo as we knew it and as we taught it to our children. Meanwhile, the female villains like Ursula (whose design was inspired by drag legend Devine), Maleficent, and Cruella Deville were presented as antithetically feminine so as to be positioned as corrupting influences on the young women of the day. This technique was used in the early days of the Hays Code and well before, when lesbians were portrayed as corrupting influences on impressionable young women. It left a lasting impression – even if it eventually backfired.

Queer coding impacted pop culture so deeply that we started to accept the harmful stereotypes as factual representations. Queer/Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans – all of the above were bad. Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a greedy bisexual transvestite who just wants to take take take and corrupt anyone around him. Dr. Robert Elliott in Dressed To Kill is a murderous, psychotic transvestite. Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs: another murderous, psychotic transvestite. Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct: psychotic bisexual serial killer. Governor Ratcliffe in Pocahontas: a gay-coded xenophobic colonialist. Xerxes in 300 is the ultimate flamboyant, gay-coded villain.

Are you seeing a pattern yet?

The trend hasn’t gone away. Now we often see coding as infinitely more subtle and arguably more insidious, being used as something to hide behind without actually having to do any work. We saw this with LeFou in the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast as well as Lando Calrissian in Solo.

A Magnum Opus of Homophobic Queer Coding

19 years ago, in May of 2000, John Woo created a stunning magnum opus to queer coding that has seldom been topped: Mission: Impossible 2

Or as I’ve come to call it while working on this piece, Homophobia: The Movie

In this installment, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team are after a deadly virus-turned-biological weapon called Chimera. The mission they’ve chosen to accept is to find it and destroy it before rogue IMF agent Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott) gets his hands on it and unleashes it on the world.

Presumed friend of Hunt, Dr. Nekhorvich (Rade Serbedzija), created the virus, giving only this explanation as to its purpose: “Every search for a hero must begin with something that every hero requires – a villain. Therefore, in search for our hero, Bellerophon, we created a monster – Chimera.”

It’s in these opening shots that we see the first hints of coding: a dark, sterile lab where death is born…with a rainbow? There’s no logical reason for this to happen. A little grade 1 science here, but rainbows form when light is refracted, reflected, and dispersed through, typically, water. You don’t get rainbows through straight sheets of glass such as windows. This placement is specific and deliberate.

But it could be a fluke…right?

When Nekhorvich leaves his lab, infected with the virus, he walks outside to a group of children dancing and singing “Ring A Ring ‘O Roses”, ashes ashes and all. For those who may not know, the nursery rhyme has a long history of being connected to the Bubonic Plague, though this is mostly just an urban legend. However, it’s a concept deeply ingrained in the public consciousness, often simply with the association of death. The fact that these kids are all in grey formalwear is both ominous and confusing. But the fact that there are couples walking all around them, and every pairing is same-sex? Well, now, isn’t this telling.

We then meet Nyah (Thandie Newton), Hunt’s love interest for the next hour and a half – a unique step in and of itself when you consider a fast love affair on the job is distinctly out of character for Hunt, and he never does it again in the entire franchise. But Nyah is special, because she’s the “beard” ex of our villain, Ambrose, and he wants her back at all costs.

Ambrose’s right hand man, Hugh Stamp (Richard Roxburgh), isn’t pleased with Nyah’s return. They try to play it off as base-level suspicion, but Hugh is coded as the gay jealous lover from top to bottom. The framing, thanks to Top Gun director of photography Jeffrey Kimball, positions Hugh unequivocally as the jealous lover watching from afar.

Hugh and Ambrose even have a quarrel the morning after her arrival that ends with some very suggestive framing. Ambrose holds Hugh down, standing behind him, in order to snip the tip of his finger off in a disciplinarian move that vividly suggests pleasurable sodomy.

What was that? Oh, sorry. I thought I heard a volleyball match going on in the background.

Perhaps you’re familiar with the harmful notion of “the homosexual agenda”, a term coined by the Christian right in the 1980s to condemn the normalization and social acceptance of LGBTQ+ people and lifestyles. It purports that gay folks infiltrate regular society by passing as straight in order to seem less threatening and, therefore, worthy of acceptance. It’s antiquated and pure homophobic fear mongering. But in 2000, it was something plenty of folks bought into. Hell, it still is. And what M:I 2 was doing at the time was coding Chimera, our destructive chemical weapon, as the homosexual or gay agenda. So in the process of coding the villains, Ambrose and Hugh, as gay, the heroes, Nyah and Hunt, as straight, and Chimera as the gay agenda, Woo successfully coded homosexuality in its entirety as a violent threat to mankind.

From the very beginning, M:I 2 not only posits that queerness in general is an aberration, but that it’s synthesized. We watch as Chimera is created in a lab, a manufactured foil to the heterosexual Bellerophon. The very name itself, Chimera, stems from the creature from Greek mythology comprised of a lion’s head with the body of a goat and a snake for a tail. It’s an abomination. Bellerophon, on the other hand, was often regarded as one of the greatest heroes of all time and portrayed as the perfect specimen of a man who slays the Chimera.

On top of the mythological elements, M:I 2 reinforces the grossly false ideology that has put queer lives in danger for decades while damaging the public perception of queerness: that queerness is itself an abomination, and an active choice implying its fabrication. The film presents imagery that suggests that the fight for normalizing gay culture, the fight for queer equality and rights for the LGBTQ+ community is tantamount to fighting for the world’s destruction.

In the process of coding its queer villains and heteronormative heroes – the personifications of both Chimera and Bellerophon, respectively – Woo managed to code the entire LGBTQ+ community and queerness itself as not only villainous but threatening to the heterosexual norm, procreation, and the sanctity of life itself.

Remember that heavily-coded opening scene? With children singing a nursery rhyme linked to the plague that decimated between 25-60% of the entire European population while same-sex “pairings” (READ: couples) walked around them? The end of the film steers as hard as possible in the other direction. Hunt and Nyah see one another across a sunlit field full – and I mean FULL – of children happily playing in the sun surrounded straight couples and families. They meet. They kiss. And they walk off into a living recreation of Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon On The Island Of La Grande Jatte, here positioned as the heteronormative future. Life returned to the status quo, where marriage is between a man and a woman, and children can run free unafraid of that dreaded gay agenda out to corrupt them.

How ‘Rogue One’ Changed From Its Original Script, According to Screenwriter Chris Weitz

by Hoai-Tran Bui

rogue one changes

Plenty of movies get changed on the way from the page to the big screen, but few perhaps as drastically (or infamously) as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The standalone Star Wars film went through dramatic changes in the summer of 2016, which saw significant plot points dropped and whole scenes that appeared in the trailer not show up in the finished film. We don’t know the full extent of the Rogue One changes, but Rogue One co-writer Chris Weitz is here to enlighten us on what the original film script looked like

In an interview with the Cult Popture podcast (via IndieWire), Weitz spoke about the original Rogue One script that he penned, which would be rewritten by co-writer Tony Gilroy when Lucasfilm overhauled the film directed by Gareth Edwards. Here are a few of the changes to Rogue One.

The Death Star Was Kept a Mystery

The driving force for the plot of Rogue One was the Rebels’ plan to steal the Death Star plans. Right off the bat, Star Wars fans were made aware about the looming threat of the weapon when an infromer talks about a “planet killer” the Empire is building. However, Weitz’s script was a little more obscure on what the plans at the center of the mission actually were for, choosing to keep the Death Star reveal a mystery until the end:

“It wasn’t clear at the beginning of the film that the Death Star was going to be the Death Star. It was just the sense in the rebellion that something bad was going down and we need to find out about it. There was this developing sense of dread throughout the [original script].”

However, Weitz said executives did not want to keep the Death Star plot a mystery since Star Wars fans would have already known what the weapon was.  “I was pushing for something that had more of a sense of dramatic irony,” Weitz said.

The Fan-Favorite Darth Vader Scene Was Added Later

It seems that most of the elements added by Gilroy or Lucasfilm were nods to the Star Wars universe at large, appeasing hardcore Star Wars fans who just wanted to see Darth Vader murder a bunch of dudes. But it worked – Darth Vader’s unstoppable slaughter ended up being one of the highlights of Rogue One, something that Weitz acknowledges:

“The Darth Vader kicking ass I cannot take credit for. That was a later invention. That was different…A lot of the deaths were put in different locations when they were shot. I’m not sure why K-2 died in a different place, for instance.”

The Story Structure Was Completely Different

“If you can imagine the beginning of the second act and the end of the second act swapping places, that would not be an inaccurate way to portray how it structurally was changed,” Weitz said of the main difference between his original script and Gilroy’s revisions. However, Weitz doesn’t begrudge Gilroy’s changes, adding that “I feel great about the final cut.” He added:

“I really liked the movie…I had no idea what it was going to look like until I sat down at the premiere. It was like watching a movie I had written and a new movie at the same time. I really, really liked it.”

‘Aquaman 2’ Officially in the Works With David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick on Board as Screenwriter

by Hoai-Tran Bui

aquaman 2

David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has permission to come aboard Aquaman 2 as the superhero sequel’s screenwriter. Warner Bros. has tapped Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the first film with Will Beall, to pen the script for the Aquaman sequel, which officially takes its first steps toward development.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has hired David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick as the screenwriter for Aquaman 2, signaling the sequel’s first stages of development. Johnson-McGoldrick is a trusted collaborator with Aquaman director James Wan, co-writing Aquaman and penning Wan’s The Conjuring 2.

But there are still a few steps left in this early development process: the studio still has to sign off on the script, as does Wan. While neither Wan nor Beall have confirmed their return, Johnson-McGoldrick’s hiring indicates that Warner Bros. is full steam ahead on the hit comic book movie’s sequel.

While it’s still too early to tell where the plot of Aquaman 2 will go, it’s likely that the sequel will follow up on the arc of Black Manta, whose origin story in the first Aquaman nearly stole the scenes from Orm’s (Patrick Wilson) war against the surface world. During the mid-credits scene of Aquaman, we saw the pirate (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) striking up a partnership with Dr. Stephen Shin (Randall Park), a scientist and conspiracy theorist obsessed with the Atlanteans, to get revenge against Arthur.

It’s no surprise that Warner Bros. is riding the Aquaman wave. The film broke records last month when it raked in $1.085 billion at the box office, nabbing The Dark Knight Rises’ crown for the highest-grossing DC movie ever. Recently, Warner Bros. begun development on an Aquaman spin-off titled The Trench, which would take a horror-focused approach to the best sequence in Wan’s film.

So while it’s still in the early stages of Aquaman 2‘s development, we can probably expect the sequel to surf toward our local theaters in the next few years or so.

Second Public Beta of iOS 12.2 Now Available

by Juli Clover
Apple today released the second beta of an upcoming iOS 12.2 update to its public beta testing group, one day after seeding the second beta to developers and a week after releasing the first public beta.

Beta testers who have joined Apple's beta testing program can download the iOS 12.2 beta update over-the-air after installing the proper certificate on an iOS device.

Those who want to download the new beta can do so after signing up for the beta program, which gives access to iOS, macOS, and tvOS betas.

The iOS 12.2 update expands Apple News to Canada for the first time, with Canadian iPhone and iPad users able to access news stories in English, French, or both. It introduces infrastructure for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit on third-party TVs, a feature announced in early January.

The TV remote feature in Control Center has been redesigned to take up the full display of an iPhone, and there are tweaks to the Wallet app with a refined interface and a new look for Apple Pay Cash. Changes have been made to Safari with warnings about unsecured websites and new search arrows, and there's now a setting to set Downtime for apps on a day by day basis.

Apple is improving Safari's privacy in iOS 12.2 through a new Motion & Orientation toggle located under Settings --> Safari --> Privacy & Security, which is disabled by default. The setting needs to be enabled on to allow websites to display content that relies on motion data from the accelerometer and gyroscope in the iPhone and iPad.

There are new Animoji in the second iOS 12.2 beta, including a boar, a shark, a giraffe, and an owl. Animoji can be used within the Messages and FaceTime apps. For some AT&T users, there's a new "5G E" icon for the cellular signal, replacing the standard LTE icon. This is a bit misleading of AT&T, because the iPhone does not support 5G, nor is the network AT&T calls 5G E actual 5G. Instead, it's an upgraded version of LTE, with more info available here.

A full list of the new feature changes we've found in iOS 12.2 can be found in our iOS 12.2 tidbits post.

iOS 12.2 confirms Apple's plans to release second-generation AirPods with "Hey Siri" support, thanks to a hidden AirPods setup screen in the beta. The inclusion of the AirPods setup option in the beta indicates that Apple could perhaps be planning to release new AirPods when iOS 12.2 is released.

The update also features hints of an upcoming Apple News subscription service, which could see Apple News offering a Texture-like paid magazine service.

The iOS 12.2 update will likely see several rounds of beta testing over the course of the next month or so before it launches to the public.

Apple Registers Seven New iPad Models in Eurasian Database, Rumors Expect New 10-Inch iPad and iPad Mini 5 [Updated]

by Joe Rossignol
Apple has registered seven unreleased iPad models in the Eurasian Economic Commission database this week, including models A2123, A2124, A2126, A2153, A2154, A2133, and A2152, according to the Indian blog MySmartPrice.

The filings are legally required for any encrypted devices sold in Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia.

These models could represent new versions of the iPad mini and the 9.7-inch iPad, which may become 10 inches based on recent rumors.

Multiple sources have claimed Apple plans to launch a so-called iPad mini 5 and a new entry-level iPad with a 10-inch display, replacing the existing 9.7-inch model, including the China Times and supply chain-focused website DigiTimes. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said a new iPad mini is in the works last year.

Eurasian Economic Commission filings like these have foreshadowed the release of new Apple products on numerous occasions, including multiple iPad and iPad Pro models, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 4, AirPods, the 2018 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, and several other devices.

March is a common month for both Apple's first event of the year and iPad refreshes, so perhaps we'll see new models then.

Notably, Apple hasn't updated the iPad mini since September 2015.

Update: A seventh iPad model — A2126 — was also filed in the Eurasian database today.
