15 Fun Facts About ‘Scrubs’
Stop shouting "Eagle!" with your bros and delve into these little-known facts about Scrubs, which premiered 15 years ago today.
1. THE HOSPITAL IS REAL.
Sacred Heart is a real, abandoned hospital building. Patients used to drop by the set, seeking medical advice. The writers' room was North Hollywood Medical Center's former psychiatric ward, which might help explain some of the show’s more out-there fantasy sequences.
2. REAL DOCTORS REVIEWED THE SHOW'S STORYLINES.
Real doctors served as consultants on set to make sure Scrubs's storylines were scientifically accurate. One was a cardiologist named Jonathan Doris—J.D. for short. Another was Jon Turk. See what they did there?
3. THERE WAS AN ERROR IN THE OPENING CREDITS.
The X-ray sign in the opening credits was backwards for nearly five whole seasons. Then urologist Kim Briggs (Elizabeth Banks) strolled in, said "It's been bugging me for years," and flipped it over.
4. J.D. and Elliot's stunt doubles got married.
They met on set. Hopefully their route to happiness was less rocky than that of the characters they portrayed bungee jumping.
5. DR. COX'S TEASING IS PULLED FROM REAL LIFE.
Dr. Cox calls J.D. girls's names because John C. McGinley jokingly does the same to close friend John Cusack in real life. Cox hit everything from Abby to Zsa Zsa on the show, according to a fan-compiled list. Poor Cusack.
6. Ted's a cappella group, The Worthless Peons, performs in real life as The Blanks.
Naturally, they made a music video for the show’s musical episode hit "Guy Love." The Blanks also do sketch comedy.
7. Neil Flynn, the janitor, ad-libbed most of his lines.
"Sometimes a script would show up and when Neil enters it would just say (Neil makes up something and then exits)," Zach Braff told Redditors.
8. The janitor was originally supposed to be a figment of J.D.'s imagination.
In the first season, Flynn's character only talks to J.D. Braff said writers broadened his role when they realized just how funny he could be.
9. Judy Reyes fractured her pelvis before the musical episode.
Knowing she had recently undergone surgery makes Carla and Turk's tango all the more impressive.
10. Men and women had equal-opportunity risqué scenes.
"One of the things I swore to the female actors on the show was 'You guys will have to be in skimpy lingerie and doing sexy shit, but I promise you for every time one of you guys is like that one of the male characters will be like that,'" said creator Bill Lawrence. That certainly explains The Todd’s frequent banana hammock appearances.
11. The real reason J.D. and Turk get a new stuffed dog, Steven, is because a fired crew member hid Rowdy in the hospital’s ceiling.
"It's not really easy to find dead, stuffed golden retrievers," Lawrence said in a Paley Center interview. The inspiration was a guy Lawrence knew in college.
12. Writers killed off beloved Nurse Laverne Roberts in a car crash because they thought the show was going to be cancelled.
When it was renewed, Lawrence re-hired Aloma Wright as Laverne's twin sister, Shirley. Only J.D. notices the similarities between the two nurses.
13. The janitor cleaning up outside the hospital after the eighth season finale montage is series creator Bill Lawrence.
It's one of a handful of cameos he made on the show.
14. There's an epic Scrubs reunion during the Cougar Town credits.
It’s another Lawrence-created show. Even Bob Kelso shows up.
15. Zach Braff actually hates appletinis.
He prefers to sip Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Some fans aren't pleased.

Amazon Adds 5% Cash Back For Prime Members To Store Credit Card
Hey, you, person who buys things on Amazon but who doesn’t have a Prime subscription. Yeah, you! If the discounted shipping, streaming media, and the deals and festivities of Prime Day weren’t enough to convince you to subscribe to the service, what about a credit card? Yes, Amazon already has a variety of credit cards, but what about a special Prime credit card?
Actually, the card is the same store credit card that they had before, but being a Prime member adds one benefit: you get 5% back on all of your purchases as a credit on your following statement. Yes, that is pretty much the same thing at Target’s RedCard: both are cards that can only be used at one store, but the difference is that Target gives you the discount at the time of the purchase.
Amazon didn’t make a big deal out of this new benefit, just sort of quietly slipping it onto the store card page. It’s been around since March, but without an on-site ad blitz or even a press release. Jason Del Ray over at Re/Code happened to notice it while shopping on the site.
My favorite thing about this story is that now I’ve learned that Amazon’s store credit card has its own reviews page, which is almost as interesting as the reviews page for Amazon gift cards.

Building a Home with His Bare Hands
When the apocalypse comes, this is the guy you want to be friends with. He starts out by making himself an axe out of a stone. Then he builds a complete wattle and daub hut from just the materials around him in Queensland, Australia. When you think he’s finished, he comes up with more amazing survival skills to improve upon it. Without a word, he makes it easy to follow each step.
From the video description:
I built this hut in the bush using naturally occurring materials and primitive tools. The hut is 2m wide and 2m long, the side walls are 1m high and the ridge line (highest point) is 2m high giving a roof angle of 45 degrees. A bed was built inside and it takes up a little less than half the hut. The tools used were a stone hand axe to chop wood, fire sticks to make fire, a digging stick for digging and clay pots to carry water. The materials used in the hut were wood for the frame, vine and lawyer cane for lashings and mud for daubing. Broad leaves were initially used as thatch which worked well for about four months before starting to rot. The roof was then covered with sheets of paper bark which proved to be a better roofing material. An external fireplace and chimney were also built to reduce smoke inside. The hut is a small yet comfortable shelter and provides room to store tools and materials out of the weather.
He says in the comments that he put in about a month’s work on this, although the video covers nine months of time, since he had other things to do and didn’t work on it every day. By the time the video was finished, I wouldn’t have been surprised if you told me he fashioned the camera out of found materials. He has other videos under the account Primitive Technology that goes into detail about some of his skills. -via reddit

Discover Financial Ditching Home-Lending Business
Just three years after getting into the mortgage origination business, Discover Financial Services plans to shutter its home lending operations.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Discover, which began offering home loans after it acquired Tree.com in 2012, will dissolve the service in order to shift focus to consumer banking services.
Discover says the move to consumer banking offers “greater opportunities for growth.”
The company has already stopped accepting applications at its Irvine, CA, location, but will continue processing and funding loans already underway, the L.A. Times reports.
Discover Home Loans Inc. will also wind down business at its Louisville, KY, offices later this summer. AmeriSave Mortgage Corp. is expected to finish processing applications from that unit, establishing its own office in the city.
The mortgage origination closure will result in the loss of about 460 jobs. Discover says it will offer severance packaged to the affected employees.

Yes, You Can Eat Soup in 80-Degree Weather (as Long as It's This Gazpacho) — Delicious Links
With summer on its way — and many air conditioners already busily humming in windows — it's time to say goodbye to warm soups and stews. Don't worry, though — this cucumber-radish-avocado gazpacho means you can have your soup and eat it too. (Even when it's hot as blazes out.)
Cauliflower Hummus Is the Dip You Need in Your Life — The Vegetable Butcher
We all love cauliflower at this point, don’t we? It has certainly come a long way. We’ve tried it as rice, couscous, pizza crust, and cake. We regularly blend it into a mashed potato substitute and roast it until it becomes nutty and sweet — no longer over-steamed and scarred with an overwhelming cabbagey taste. We are eating it tossed with grains, featuring it in salads, and treating it like a steak.
But, my friends, have you combined it with tahini, garlic, and lemon to make a silky hummus-like puree? It’s my humble addition to the cauliflower craze, and one of my favorite ways to prepare cauliflower. (It just might replace each and every spread you’ve ever made.)
Surprising and Delicious Foods You Can Make in a Rice Cooker
For the past few years, the Instant Pot has been the sweetheart of the one-pot cooking world. But before it was the hot item on everyone’s registries, there was the humble rice cooker. But don’t let the name fool you: rice cookers cook more than just rice.
