I love that anti-feminists can say that misogynist jokes are JUST JOKES but refuse to understand the concept of ironic misandry and why it’s different and subversive rather than oppressive but lmao sure misandry jokes are true examples of pure unadulterated sexism and jokes about misogyny are JUST JOKES

Got it.

I’ve actually read a lot of Sapolsky’s work.  He’s one of my favorite scientists in the neuro/socio world.

I just watched the documentary and there is so much more about the troop that isn’t in this photoset—not only does the troop have a culture of little aggression and greater cooperation, but any incoming jerk baboons learned within a few months that their shitty behaviour was in no way acceptable, that the troop only rewarded sociability, and they changed accordingly.

“Is Draco alive? Is he in the castle?” The whisper was barely audible; her lips were an inch from his ear, her head bent so low that her long hair shielded his face from the onlookers. “Yes,” he breathed back. He felt the hand on his chest contract; her nails pierced him. Then it was withdrawn. She had sat up. “He is dead!” Narcissa Malfoy called to the watchers.

In the end, Voldemort’s fate twice came down to the choice of a woman, a mother.

Rock ‘n roll.

Harry Potter as a series repeatedly tells us never to underestimate a mother’s love. Lilly’s love for Harry nearly killed Voldemort the first time, Narcissa’s love for Draco set him up for his real death, and Voldemort’s greatest general was killed by Molly, a mother who loved all of her children and feared losing any more to the magical war.

Bitches. Get. Stuff. Done.

Anyone who thinks Harry Potter as a series isn’t good literature and doesn’t teach important life lessons/points of view about ethics, morality and responsibility, needs to G-O-OUT-DA-DO’.

This had to be the most raw moment in the series because the fact that she was like “My baby is okay that’s all that matters, and I know what will happen if Voldemort wins, so let’s end this.”

I mean, Voldemort lost because he trusted his followers to be implicit in their loyalty, but a lot had changed in the decade since he’d last terrorized the world. Like…the Death Eaters for the most part were calmed down and writing off those dark days as the “wild days of their youth” and shit, so when Voldemort pops back up ready to pick up where he left off, you could see a lot of the doubt in them like “Yo we grew up, son, shit ain’t like it was before.” But they followed out of fear mostly, not loyalty. Bellatrix was just crazy and in love with V so it didn’t matter to her what happened—and it ultimately led to her death.

But Narcissa was raw as fuck because she knew SOMEBODY had to stop him and she knew her husband was too scared to do it himself, so she devised her own on-the-fly plan.

The HP series is way too dope to be written off, and most of the detractors who write it off are just jealous of the hype it gets, but if you really read it, so many themes are covered in the story, chief among them being growing up and the expectations therein.

…am I rambling. I need to stop.

Dang, I didn’t even consider the whole “we’ve grown up” thing, but you’re absolutely right. And to add to that, not only have they grown up, they’ve had children. Being a Death Eater is something that these folks probably thought was hot shit when they were young, but now that they’ve grown up, they’re seeing their children doing the same thing, and suddenly it’s not so cool anymore. They’re deeply unsettled at best, and terrified at worst.

And Voldy literally lacks the ability to see this. He will never understand that love, and love for one’s children, also extends to his cronies. He will never understand that love causes people to take unimaginable risks FOR these children.

He will never understand that love for one’s children is so strong that a woman who’s followed him loyally for years will lie to his face—never mind that he’s THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED LEGILIMENS IN THE WORLD—about his absolute worst enemy. When she was forced to choose between her son and her leader, she chose her son, without even batting an eye.

THAT is powerful.

Exactly. These people have grown up, gotten married, and had children. Voldemort is that dude that was perpetually still trying to be forever young, still going to the same clubs, still doing the same fuckshit, and everybody who used to ride with him is like “For real, tho? We off that, man.”

Harry Potter draws a lot of parallels to the real world despite the story itself. I love it.

I love when Tumblr breaks out into hardcore analysis.

hardcore analysis is the shit

“We are used to ignoring our own bodies. “These carrots are too spicy” we complained as a child, only to be told no, they were sweet, that the music wasn’t too loud, nobody can hear lights, what you are experiencing is invalid. We heard: you are invalid. You do not experience the world the same way as everyone else, and therefore, your experience is wrong. You learn to ignore the ever-present pain because nothing can be done about it, but then you have a kidney infection and others get mad at you for not noticing sooner. But why should you trust your body when it is always wrong?”

Upgrade Store-Bought Applesauce With a Bit of Maple Syrup

Wait, people buy applesauce?

Applesauce is an excellent accompaniment to many holiday treats (latkes, ham, roasted pork), but the store-bought stuff can be a little lacking. Luckily, you can easily jazz it up with stuff you probably already have in your fridge.

15 things I learnt about Islam and British values being a gay boy living opposite a mosque

15 things I learnt about Islam and British values being a gay boy living opposite a mosque:

watchoutfordinosaurs:

lgbtlaughs:

The media stories about islam meant that I was genuinely a little nervous about moving in across the road to a mosque. What I have learnt in the four years since I moved is that the ridiculousness of British culture is universal. We all love tea, are really polite and tut rather than saying something, no matter our religion. -  Thomas Mauchline
  1. No mosque has enough parking and muslim men love to complain about it. I don’t care how young or trendy they are, within seconds they will be pointing at bits of pavement muttering about the number of cars you could fit in there — like my Granddad from Manchester does at Sainsbury’s.
  2. You can do that look British people do to each other, when someone nearby is making a scene, in a full face veil.
  3. Muslims pray a lot.
  4. You will be happy they pray a lot when you get stabbed on your doorstep and are too scared to go outside. So you time your trips to the shops to coincide with these prays as the streets are full of friendly people.
  5. Muslims, like all British people have that one problematic uncle that kinda ruins family occasions.
  6. When confronted with something out of their comfort zone, like me and my boyfriend in full drag dancing down the road, muslims like all British people get flustered and over compensate with being overly polite — a bit like Hugh Grant.
  7. When finding out you have been dating your boyfriend for 5 years your muslim neighbours will be disgusted that you haven’t proposed. You hear “get a civil partnership — for your mothers sake” a lot.
  8. Apparently there is usually half a cup of tea next to the pray matt when praying at home — especially for morning prayers.
  9. Like in the rest of Britain all muslim fathers think their daughter is smarter than everyone, even though she is only 6 years old…
  10. …and that their son is a heartbreaker even though its clear to everyone else that he spends all his time on his Xbox.
  11. Young muslim women are really, really, really ambitious.
  12. British people’s dry sarcasm works really well when confronting the times the more traditional parts of islam come face to face with modern gay culture. For example when I donated 3 sequined crop tops to the islamic relief Syria clothing drive, one of the older guys there smirked, shaking my hand and saying “our brothers and sisters in Syria thank you for the evening wear.”
  13. There is always an Aunt who gets too involved in the wedding planning and annoys the bride.
  14. During ramadan and eid there will be so many people on the streets going to mosque that the drugs dealers will have to move to other places — making your area really safe for a while.
  15. Mothers will say anything to stop their kids nagging them. I once saw a Muslim mother tell her kid that wanted some fried chicken, after Friday night prayers, that the shop wasn’t halal even though there was a 5ft sq neon halal sign in the window. Reminds me of when my mum told me that the chip shop was closed for a private event as she wanted some peace.

#7 is *adorable*.

telegantmess:

arodeanw:

tbh people that go like ‘but why are there lesbian couples in KIDS shows, they are too young and shouldn’t be exposed to that’ are horrible, bc at the same time they don’t care about the fact, that many lesbians (myself included) heard the word lesbian the first time either

  • in a very negative context (either as a homophobic joke or as slur or as demeaning word for girls that didnt fit in the heteronormative view of society, anyway not as something that would be good to be)

OR

  • as a porn category

So by saying there shouldn’t be lesbian couples in Kids Shows you are /actively/ helping that kids will hear the word as a slur first and dont have the possiblity to see it first as for what it really stands for: Women who love other women exclusively, as something that doesn’t make you dirty or bad.

people who say shit like that (”kids are too young to understand!”) have never seen how my kid lights up when we see media with families that look even vaguely like ours.

Zie gets so excited when zie sees other kids with more than one mom.

Sometimes evolution has terrifying fever dreams where everything is beautiful but nothing makes any sense. But when it wakes up in the morning, it makes some really weird-ass birds.

socialjusticeichigo:

This one time in high school, I was standing in line for food in the cafeteria, and this guy behind me (who was definitely not thin) suddenly called me fat.

And like, I just turned, looked him up and down, and went, “You aren’t exactly thin yourself.”

This kid completely lost his shit. That’s not how girls are ‘supposed’ to respond to being called fat. Girls are supposed to break down crying in shame. I didn’t do that and it set something off in this guy.

Thankfully the lunch lady was just handing me my lunch and I could get out of there, I literally ducked and weaved between people in the crowded cafeteria in the hopes of losing him if he tried to follow me.

So like, let’s not pretend that fatphobia against men is the same as fatphobia against women. A fat guy will have no problem calling a fat woman names because in our society it is more acceptable to be male and fat than female and fat.

Walmart's Chinese imports cost more than 400,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs, study says

by rss@dailykos.com (Laura Clawson)

Imports from China have cost the United States a lot of jobs—3.2 million of them between 2001 and 2013. And Walmart accounted for around 415,000 of those lost jobs, a new report from the Economic Policy Institute estimates. That’s 13.2 percent of the jobs lost to Chinese imports that can be attributed to Walmart.

  • The manufacturing sector and its workers have been hardest hit by the growth of Wal-Mart’s imports. Wal-Mart’s increased trade deficit with China between 2001 and 2013 eliminated 314,500 manufacturing jobs, 75.7 percent of the jobs lost from Wal-Mart’s trade deficit. These job losses are particularly destructive because jobs in the manufacturing sector pay higher wages and provide better benefits than most other industries, especially for workers with less than a college education.
  • Wal-Mart has announced plans to create opportunities for American manufacturing by “investing in American jobs.” To date, very few actual U.S. jobs have been created by this program, and since 2001, the growing Wal-Mart trade deficit with China has displaced more than 100 U.S. jobs for every actual or promised job created through this program.

Walmart says this is totes unfair because it’s based on estimates (since Walmart’s own data is a secret) and Walmart creates all sorts of other jobs, the low pay of which we should ignore.
