Viola Davis has never shied away from harsh truths. On Tuesday, Davis spoke to the Stuart House (a nonprofit for sexually abused children) about trauma in her own family. Through her speech, she explained how abuse changes survivors’ lives and what she wishes she could say to her sister now: “I wish I could tell my sister …”
“Memories demand attention, because memories have teeth.” Fuck that’s so powerful
So I know, factually, that Galactic Basic is the language spoken on Alderaan, but, bear with me, imagine Leia Organa, one of the last living speakers of Alderaanian.
Imagine her teaching it to Luke and to Han, creating a network of all the surviving native Alderaanians, instructing C-3P0 to only use Alderaanian around her because her planet may be dead but dammit that doesn’t mean her language has to be.
Imagine her raising Ben in Alderaanian, telling him old Alderaan bedtime stories and singing him traditional Alderaanian lullabies.
Imagine Leia Organa going to hell and back to preserve the language and culture of her planet.
Oh man, I forget what book series it was in the EU, but it was one of the wild spin off series intended for really young audiences and it was about some kids who were orphaned by the destruction of Alderaan because they’d been on like an intergalactic field trip to another planet, and they all just got scattered to the winds to wherever distant relatives could take them or whatever planet was willing to take Alderaan refugees.
And one of the kids was Force sensitive so OF COURSE at some point they end up meeting the Galaxies Most Wanted Nerds, and Luke is really sweet with them and Han talks ships with them and Leia, Leia is just so god damn stoic with them and gentle and promises them that one day they’ll have a home again, they all will and they spend hours talking, just because it means they can hear their own accent, just for a little while…
And then there were literal zombies, Lando turned up in a theme park and I forget what else but it was a fucking wild ride of a kids series.
Young people are far likelier to face wait times to vote than their older counterparts, and may find themselves largely locked out of primary voting. What’s more, four times as many African-Americans and six times as many Latinos report waiting 30 or more minutes in line to vote than whites, a new study found. Why? Lots of reasons.
@hobbitkaiju is encouraging me to post the lil fic idea I sketched out in response to my own suggestion.
MCU no-powers!AU Sam/Steve where Natasha gives Steve a cat because she thinks it will be good for him not to live completely alone and also because it means she can come over and play with the kitty. The cat is subsequently christened “Natasha the Cat” or sometimes “Catasha” to prevent confusion when Nat is over.
Unbeknownst to Steve, Catasha has been sneaking out the window of his apartment into his neighbour’s place and stealing underwear and socks and stashing them under his couch. He finds the whole lot of it when he’s cleaning one day and puts a sign up in the laundry room of the building apologizing profusely and promising to return them. Sam’s the hapless burglarized neighbour who’s been going mad for months not being able to figure out where his underwear keeps disappearing to and why he can never find both socks in a pair.
Stephanie Smith-Strickland grew up attending a school where she was the only person of color in most of her classes. She still feels the sting of frequent moments of sensitivity, which came when classmates would be subtly and overtly prejudice. This is why it’s so gratifying for her to see Michelle Obama using her platform to start a conversation surrounding the very issues that caused her grief as a child.
Mac: Last year, XKCD’s Randall Monroe released Simple Writer, a web app that restricted your writing to the top 1,000 most commons words in the English language. If web apps aren’t your thing, Cleartext is a free Mac app that does the same thing.
I'll be honest, I'm often more than tempted to trot out that last line when explaining stuff to people making twice my salary to do the stuff they've assigned for me to do.

Obi-Wan can find an invisible planet hidden by a devious Sith Lord, Anakin can’t find his ex-best friend on his own home planet while the guy is still using his own damn name.
I know we give Obi-wan a lot of shit for leaving Luke with his real surname but Anakin really is that stupid
“If there’s one thing I hate more than scientists trying to take over the world, it’s scientists who twist innocent primates with computer enhanced mind control to live out their sick and perverted fantasies of criminal power.”

Never been tested, but trial and error says: Easter lilies, grass, cottonwood (whatever those fluffy white clouds of treespawn are, oh god), grass (makes me itch for hours if I walk barefoot).
Funny thing is, I’ve moved hay bales around for hours and not had a problem, my horse and cat don’t make me sniffle, and the only bad food reaction I’ve ever had was Arby’s three-pepper sauce (though I can eat salsa and curry and have zero issues).
You really want the whole list? Pet dander, dogs and cats. Dust and dust mites, tree and grass pollen, mold, mosquito bites, CT contrast, several types of antibiotics.
Surprisingly, I don’t have issues with any food and I’ve never reacted to poison ivy.
So I learned that Worf ends up taking care of Spot after Nemesis (deleted scene apparently- I gotta look it up!), and it, er, rather captured my imagination XD
i feel like the fundamental ideological divide they’re using for civil war is that steve is reacting to the winter soldier while tony is reacting to age of ultron
steve is afraid of being controlled, of being forced to take action or inaction even when his own moral code disagrees, or when he’s not given all the information (this ties a lot into bucky’s arc but that’s a whole other post)
tony is afraid of himself, of what he could do or who he could become without something restraining him, of being the merchant of death with no accountability all over again
steve does what he does because he’s certain that what he’s doing is right; tony does what he does because he doesn’t trust himself to make that call anymore
“The staff of Fortune and a panel of experts recently assembled our 2016 list of the World’s Greatest Leaders. Here’s a short profile of three of them.
Modern social movements often fizzle after their moment in the national news (Occupy Wall Street and to a lesser extent the Tea Party come to mind). But Black Lives Matter has steadily gained momentum since its founding in 2013, when activist Alicia Garza coined the phrase and fellow activist Patrisse Cullors made it a hashtag. Alongside Opal Tometi, they created the Black Lives Matter network, which has grown to 28 local chapters, each fighting a range of racial injustices like police brutality and racial profiling. Last year the movement inspired college students to take up the mantel, with some successes (the system president and chancellor of the University of Missouri resigned over outcry they failed to address campus racism). They also pushed the presidential candidates to address the country’s systemic racism – an issue would-be nominees would probably have preferred to sidestep.”
