Champa: The Bear Who Got Brain Surgery
While brain surgery has become a fairly common procedure with humans, it is still very rarely used on animal patients, who have drastically different anatomies than we do. Fortunately for Champa, an Asiatic black bear living in a sanctuary in Laos, a handful of veterinarians are still willing to experiment with brain surgery—especially if the procedure could save an animal's life.
Champa was rescued from wildlife traffickers when she was only a cub, but she was still facing danger—this time from the inside. She suffered from hydrocephalus, a condition that causes brain swelling, which can lead to mental impairment, vision issues, and death. Her forehead was already protruding, she had difficulties socializing with other bears, she was growing slowly, and her vision was becoming damaged. So the nonprofit that runs the sanctuary where she lives got in touch with Romain Pizzi, a South African veterinary surgeon, and asked him to do the first ever brain surgery on a bear.
The six hour surgery was no picnic, but Pizzi performed with remarkable precision and Champa is now recovering well. She is already growing and has become much more social with the other bears. While the surgery can't undo all the negative effects of the condition, Champa's life is already drastically improved. As Pizzi put it, “Operating on one bear won’t save bears from extinction, and making life better for one bear won’t change the world. But the world of that one bear is changed forever.”
April 28, 2013 - 2:00pmGeorge W. Bush Presidential Center Dedication
This week, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) will dedicate the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum on the campus of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas. The facility will open to the public on May 1.

The Bush Library is the 13th of NARA’s federally owned Presidential libraries, whose holdings span eight decades of American history. It also increases our presence in Texas, where we already operate the Lyndon B. Johnson Library in Austin, George H.W. Bush’s library in College Station, and our regional archives and records center in Fort Worth.
We look forward to developing partnerships with the George W. Bush Presidential Center and with SMU to present joint programming, share our expertise, draw on our holdings, and bring together SMU’s academic departments and the library. These kinds of partnerships at the 12 other Presidential libraries have enriched the learning experience for students and scholars.
Without the preservation of and access to these Presidential materials, the history of our nation would be incomplete. They document the key decisions and policies and how crucial decisions were made. Also, through exhibits, educational initiatives, and public programs, the libraries perform a critical outreach mission in their communities and beyond.

9 Exercises You Can Do With Your Cats
Having a healthy body is important, and fortunately cats can be the best personal trainers in the world. This is primarily due to the fact they are smaller and fuzzier than any other personal trainers, but also because they can't talk so you don't have to worry if you're not following their advice!

Love, From New York to Boston
When I woke up today, I had absolutely no idea what, if any, photographs I would publish, about the Boston tragedy or otherwise. Then someone pointed me to this image, posted to Facebook by members of two New York-based groups that grew out of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Taking such a long-standing rivalry between New York and Boston, and turning it about to show support and strength speaks volumes. I sincerely thank Lucky Tran, and the Illuminator collective for posting the photo, and for allowing me to share it with you today. [1 photo]

Posted in News
“With jockeying over a future Obama presidential library between the president’s birthplace of Hawaii and his adopted hometown of Chicago already underway, lawmakers are renewing a push to make donors to such institutions public. In the past, fundraisers for presidential libraries haven’t been required to reveal the names of donors that have funded efforts to build the repositories of presidential papers and other historic artifacts. But Rep. John Duncan, R-Tenn., last month introduced a bill that would require future presidential foundations to disclose the name of any donor that gives more than $200 on a quarterly basis.” (via USA Today)

United States CO2 Emissions Fall to Lowest Level Since 1994
MaevepintoThere is hope!
Greenhouse gas emissions photo from Shutterstock
The United States Department of Energy just announced that carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption have fallen to their lowest level since 1994. Factors ranging from an increase in renewable energy sources to a decrease in coal consumption helped make 2012 one of the cleanest years since the early 1990s. The Energy Information Administration found that the United States’ carbon emissions fell 3.7 percent from 2011, and a whopping 12.1 percent since 2007.

The last time Michigan played for the NCAA men's basketball title, things didn't end well. Down by two in the 1993 championship game, Chris Webber called a timeout. But the Wolverines had no timeouts left. Webber's mistake resulted in a technical foul that clinched the title for North Carolina. A few days later, he received this letter from President Clinton.
Dear Chris,
I have been thinking of you a lot since I sat glued to the TV during the championship game.
I know that there may be nothing I or anyone else can say to ease the pain and disappointment of what happened.
Still, for whatever it's worth, you, and your team, were terrific. And part of playing for high stakes under great pressure is the constant risk of mental error. I know. I have lost two political races and made countless mistakes over the last twenty years. What matters is the intensity, integrity, and courage you bring to the effort. That is certainly what you have done. You can always regret what occurred but don't let it get you down or take away the satisfaction of what you have accomplished.
You have a great future. Hang in there.
Sincerely,
Bill Clinton
Webber was the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft later that spring and earned over $200 million in a productive pro career. Webber is in the Georgia Dome watching the game tonight.
