The Comfort Found in Feeling Small But Connected to Nature While Surrounded by Blue Water
In 2012, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols gave a powerful TED talk about embracing and exploring one’s “blue mind“, focusing on the remarkable comfort and healing properties of the act of being surrounded by blue water. While a person can feel rather small in comparison, the enormity of a body of water allows a person to feel as an integral part of a something far greater than oneself. In giving this talk, Nichols read aloud from the e e cummings poem “maggie and milly and molly and may“, which aptly concluded with “For whatever we lose (like a you or a me), it’s always ourselves we find in the sea”.
Using our oceans as the prime example of how insignificant humans can feel while also being unmistakingly connected to the spirit of nature, Nichols urges us to embrace our natural surroundings in order to live robust and full lives.

A Special Effects Box That Features a Terrifying Screaming Ghost Head That Lunges Out at Victims
The Banshee Box is a terrifyingly awesome special effects box, built by VFX production manager and artist Doug Schaefer, featuring a hidden ghost head that lunges out at victims while letting out a bloodcurdling scream. In a video from March 2018, Brian Foreman of HaunTopic Radio showcased the illusion box while at the TransWorld’s Halloween & Attractions Show. The box is available to purchase from the VFX store.
From this rustic wood box that looks empty, you can hear a music box playing along with whispers of a little girl that seems to ask “Why won’t you come and play with me?”. Once your audience is drawn closer to inspect – BOOM – you can Launch out the Screaming Light-up Banshee Face! (read more)
VFX also created a Ghost Containment Unit version of the special effects box.

7 IKEA Staples I Still Have (and Love!) 10 Years Later
This summer marks 10 years since I moved out of college and into my first grown-up apartment in Atlanta with my boyfriend. We didn't have a lot of money, but we did have an itch to make our cookie-cutter apartment feel more like a home. So we did what every pair of recent college grads do when they need to furnish an apartment cheap. We went to IKEA. And we made our place into the closest possible approximation of those little fake apartments from the showroom.

Vintage Camper Birdhouse Kits
Marcus Williams and Sj Stone of One Man, One Garage have created wonderful Vintage Camper Birdhouse Kits that come ready to piece together and paint. The prepainted and paintable camper birdhouses are available to purchase from their Etsy shop.
The kit includes over 40 parts to build the miniature camper with awnings on 3 sides, plus flowers for the 2 window boxes, curtains, a spare tire, leveling jack, a Welcome mat, 2 flamingos, even a classic Weber style grill we all had as a kid. Most of the details are individual pieces to make painting a breeze. The kit also looks great left natural, but a quick spray clear-coat will ensure a longer life out in the elements!

The Vital Importance of Maintaining Free Speech and Free Expression Within a Free Society
In a rather thought-provoking whiteboard animated essay by Eli Samuel of Discoarse, discussed the concepts of free speech, civil discourse and freedom of expression in the age of technology. Citing a list of banned words being implemented at universities, Samuel raises the alarm about arbitrary censorship in the name of safety, but he is careful to note that the concept of free speech doesn’t give hateful rhetoric a free pass either. In fact, Samuel goes on to say that “hate speech should never come at the expense of human life”.
Freedom of expression, even more so than speech, is a fundamental human right that reinforces all other human rights. However free speech does not mean giving bigots a free pass. It includes the right and moral imperative to challenge oppose and protest bigoted views and as history has shown, bad ideas are most often defeated by good ideas …while we are constantly haunted by the memory of violence and its potential we must not be fearful …freedom of speech is what both makes up and defines our social contract enabling people of radically different opinions to live together without violence
While Samuel stressed the vital importance of maintaining civil discourse in a free society, but left out one salient point, which xkcd addressed in #1357.

Thirsty Street Art Murals Shimmy Up City Buildings to Pursue Their Goal of a Refreshing Coca Cola
In an absolutely wonderful ad, three thirsty street art murals came to life, stealthily shimmied up and around buildings of Buenos Aires, Argentina, hitched unlikely rides until they reached their goal – a billboard featuring three bottles of Coca-Cola. Each character grabbed a drink of their choice and settled in at the top of a refreshing water tower to enjoy. Entitled “Mural” the ad was created by Hal Curtis and Erik Fahrenkpoft of Weiden Kennedy Portland. The street art was designed by Golden Wolf and Psyop (previously). The spot was directed by Todd Mueller and Kylie Matulick. Artist Paul Cayrol who did a great deal of illustration work on the project, shared his thoughts behind the characters.
The resulting characters draw inspiration from different graffiti techniques; Octopus Shawn is a brush-painted piece, Jessica the Cloud a spray-painted throw-up & Desmond a wheat-pasted poster. …my characters placed in their natural urban habitat, on their quest for a delicious bottle of Coca-Cola…

Why Do The Press Keep Covering Up Trump's Lies?
Shakesville's Melissa McEwan cuts right to the chase:
A number of news outlets are clearly eager to act as stenographers for Trump while concealing him as their source, because they want to broadcast exclusive scoops. Still others appear willing to act as stenographers to convince Trump to back down from his relentless assaults.
In either case, it's chilling to see the complicity of significant portions of the political press — and their unconscionable willingness to conceal that Trump, a shameless and reflexive liar, is their source.
There it is, in a nutshell. What we bloggers used to call "journalmalism."
McEwan notes that Ronald Kessler's new book on the Trump White House reports Trump "has a number of journalists he frequently contacts, and leaks to on the condition that he be identified only as one of his own unnamed staff members."
John Kelly Reportedly Told Scott Pruitt to Please Try to Knock It Off With All of the Scandals
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt probably should been fired a dozen times by now. He hasn’t, however, because when it comes to Trump’s overarching goal of rendering the federal government’s regulatory power toothless, he’s been one of Trump’s most effective agency heads. But that doesn’t mean…
Fridge Always a Mess? This Common Reason May Be the Cause — 15 Minute Minimalism
My problem isn't the physical act of cleaning my fridge out; I do that every now and then without trouble. The real issue is keeping my fridge organized and functional for more than a week or two at a time. The whole beautiful array of fresh veggies and lined up condiments will slowly turn into a jumbled clutter that hides almost-expired products and allows dishes of leftovers to grow their own ecosystems in the back.
