Common Ground in Allston Is Closing

by Marc
Nathan

Son of a bitch, I have $15 in trivia winnings to spend at this bar from one time that Ned (and maybe other people?) was in town in 2010-2011. WHY DIDN'T I GO SPEND IT??????

A popular restaurant and bar in Allston is saying farewell.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Common Ground is shutting down at the end of business hours tonight, with the Harvard Avenue spot saying that "Tonight at 2am we will be closing our doors for good so come celebrate with us Mr. Piercy C K Ryan will be on the bar." A couple of sources tell us that its location in Arlington Center will remain in operation, however, so this just affects the original restaurant.

Common Ground, which first opened in 1995, has been known in part for its comfort food, craft beer list, and craft cocktails.

The address for Common Ground in Allston is 83 Harvard Avenue, Boston, MA, 02134. The website for the existing location in Arlington--which is at 319 Broadway--is http://commongroundarlington.com/

Make Tacos the Official Food of Texas!

by Mando Rayo

Let's unite all cities across Texas and make tacos the official food of Texas! Whether you grew up in Texas or you got here as soon as you could, youā€™re probably eating tacos. In Texas, people eat tacos on a weekly basis. Hell, tacos were here before Texas was Texas.

Take the petition now!

Texas State Rep. Gina Hinojsa filed Bill HCR 57 and we're working to get Texas taco cities and taco lovers to unite and support our taco bill.

From El Paso to Texarkana, from Texline to Brownsville, from the Rio Grande to the Red River, Texans consume a lot of tacos, and most of the other foods Texans enjoy, including brisket, sausage, eggs, chorizo, beans, and seafood, are that much better when served in the warm embrace of a tortilla; and love such choices as pork al pastor, beef barbacoa, and chicken fajita, korean bbq & trompo with lots and lots of salsa!

RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby designate tacos as the official state food of Texas.

Take the petition now y share-alo!

Noon Mediterranean Closes Its Back Bay, Downtown Crossing Locations; Summer Street Shop Remains Open

by Marc
Nathan

Verts files for bankruptcy

byĀ Marc Hurwitz

A group of restaurants that started out in Austin, TX, has closed two of its three locations in Boston.

According to a source, Noon Mediterranean's shops on Boylston Street in the Back Bay and Washington Street in Downtown Crossing are shuttered, with a message sent from the company confirming that both locations are no longer in operation. The company does tell us that the Summer Street outlet in Boston's Financial District remains open and that they are referring customers to this shop, which is a few blocks away from the now-closed Washington Street outlet.

Noon Mediterranean, which was originally named Verts and has moved its main office to New York City, opened its Back Bay shop in March of 2017 and its outlet in Downtown Crossing last August.

The website for Noon can be found at http://www.eatnoon.com/

[August 14 update: Eater Boston mentions (viaĀ restaurantbusinessonline.com) thatĀ Noon Mediterranean has filed for bankruptcy, closing seven locations and laying off 89 workers in the process. (Court documents indicate that the company is now looking for an investor in order to stay afloat.)]

Newswire: Simpsons writer calls Trump presidency joke ā€œa warning to Americaā€

by Sam Barsanti
Nathan

Simpsons did it.

At this point, itā€™s as much a clichĆ© to say ā€œThe Simpsons did it firstā€ as it is to say ā€œThe Simpsons isnā€™t as good as it used to be,ā€ but that doesnā€™t make it any less bone-chilling when a line that the show intended as a joke ends up coming true. Everyone laughed when Homer created hamburger ear muffs (even though they had already been invented by Professor Frink, who perfected the pickle matrix), for example, but nobody thought it was very funny when actual hamburger ear muffs flooded the market back in 2010. Thereā€™s a different Simpsons prediction thatā€™s more relevant now, though: In the episode ā€œBart To The Futureā€ (season 11, so you might not have seen it on principle), Bart is shown a vision in which Lisa has been elected president. Unfortunately, the United Statesā€™ budget has been decimated by her ...

clickholeofficial: Before We Work On Virtual Reality, We Need...

clickholeofficial:

Before We Work On Virtual Reality, We Need To Figure Out Why Bowling Pin Machines Still Knock Down A Full Set Of Pins When The Previous Bowler Got A Zero

Tech companies are doubling down on virtual reality, with just about every major player racing to put their headsets in the hands of consumers. This new technology is already a crowded field, with contenders like Facebookā€™s Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, Microsoft HoloLens, and Google Cardboard, among others. Still, I think that before we pursue further advancements in virtual reality, we need to focus on figuring out why bowling pin machines knock down a full set of pins when the last bowler got two gutter balls.

I donā€™t deny that it would be thrilling to strap on a pair of goggles and get transported to a breathtaking virtual world, but shouldnā€™t we first ask ourselves why bowlers have to wait for the machine to knock down 10 perfectly placed pins, then reset them exactly where they were? It makes no sense, and quite frankly, itā€™s a problem that demands a solution.

The Ginger Man to Open in Downtown Boston in January

by Marc
Nathan

Hey, that's 4 blocks from my office!

After having its plans fall through twice for a Fort Point location, a tavern with locations in New York, Connecticut, and Texas is getting ready to open on the northern edge of the city's Financial District.

Eater Boston is reporting that The Ginger Man is opening on State Street in January, taking over the space where a location of the Stadium Sports Bar & Grill had been. There had been talk as early as 2012 that the dining and drinking spot might be opening in Fort Point, first looking at a space on Farnsworth Street then looking at a space on Congress Street, though neighborhood resistance to one, if not both locations apparently caused those plans to fall apart.

The Ginger Man is known in part for its farm-to-table comfort food along with its extensive array of beers on tap and in bottles. Currently, locations of the place can be found in Manhattan, Greenwich, CT, and Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, Plano, Southlake, and Lakewood, TX.

The address for this new tavern in downtown Boston is 148 State Street, Boston, MA, 02109. The website for the restaurants is at http://thegingerman.com/

When are World Standards Day?

by Marc Abrahams
Nathan

Still cracks me up.

The world is still trying, and not trying, to standardize World Standards Day.

This year, World Standards Day was celebrated on October 14, 2015.

In the USA, World Standards Day was celebrated on September 28-October 2, 2015.

Last year, 2014, things were different. World Standards Day was on October 14, 2014. The USA celebrated World Standards Day on October 20-24, 2014.

The year before, inĀ 2013, most of the world celebrated World Standards Day on October 14. ButĀ the USA celebrated on October 3, 2013.

And so on.

You can download the 2015 World Standards Day Poster.

Wolaver's Organic Brewing Ceases Production

by Marc
Nathan

Didn't care that much about Wolaver's, but I often told people that Pretty Things was the best local brewer. (Pretty Things seemed to get out of the business just because it was a grind and not because they weren't successful).

A week after reporting that a beloved local brewer was shutting down production, another regional brewery has announced that it is doing the same.

According to a post on its website, Wolaver'sĀ Organic Brewing has decided to end production of all of its beers, citing that "the rising cost and availability of organic ingredients has made it increasingly challenging to create an affordable product." The post mentions that while the Wolaver'sĀ line is disappearing, the Vermont-based brewer will be working with the other brands in its family--Otter Creek and The Shed--to verify the ingredients of the beers in those lines with the help of an organization called the Non-GMO Project.

The closing of Wolaver's comes on the heels of the announcement that the Somerville-based Pretty Things brewery would be ceasing production as well, with its final beers being shipped out this month.

Wolaver's, which first started out nearly 20 years ago in California, has been known for such beers as Alta Gracia Coffee Porter, Wildflower Wheat, Oatmeal Stout, and more. The headquarters of Wolaver's, Otter Creek, and The Shed are in Middlebury, Vermont.
