The Giant Monument to Genghis Khan

by John Farrier

Khan

For a brief time, beginning with the reign of Genghis Khan (1155?-1227), the Mongols were the most powerful people on Earth. Five years ago, Mongolia erected an enormous statue in his honor:

Kahn and his horse stand 131 feet tall atop a 33-foot tall coliseum with 36 columns. Located 34 miles from Ulaanbaatar in an area known as Tsonjin Boldog, the statue commemorates the site where legend says Kahn found a golden whip.

Though Genghis Khan and his empire are dead, his genetic legacy lives on in the form of Serpentor, a leader of Cobra.

Samsung building mid-range phone with 6.3-inch display, says ETNews

by Daniel Cooper

Samsungs rumored Galaxy Mega 58 or 63inch budget phones get detailed

Korea's ETNews doesn't have a flawless track record with Samsung leaks, but it's hoping to revive its reputation with this latest sliver of gossip. It's suggesting that the company is going after those people who think the Galaxy Note is a bit on the weeny side by releasing the 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega. The device, which is codenamed "Project Möbius," is likely to come with a dual-core Exynos chip, 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel shooter up front. On the other hand, SamMobile has thrown out a bucket-load of specs to say that we could see a 5.8-inch Mega with a low-res 960 x 540 display, a 1.4GHz Exynos CPU and 1.5GB of RAM. We get the sense that neither device is coming with bleeding-edge specs and will instead slot into the mid-range tiers of the company's product lineup -- assuming they exist at all. Either way, at least we've managed to get through a whole post without using the word "phablet"... damnit!

Kayaking to an Active Volcano

by Alex Santoso

Most people run away from an active volcano, but not extreme sports photographer Alexandre Socci. Accompanied by pro kayaker Pedro Oliva, Ben Stookesberry and Chris Korbulic, Socci got up close to Kilauea, an active volcano in Hawaii, to snap these (deadly) gorgeous photos:

Originally in Hawaii to film the latest installment of their Brazilian TV program titled Kaiak for Channel OFF, Socci tells us that the group didn't really know what to expect. He recounts the day for us: "We got out of bed at 3:30 AM to be in the harbor at 4 AM and get there at 5:45 AM, before sunrise, to get the best light to see the lava and the kayaks on water. We got there and for the first 20 minutes we were just looking at everything and trying to figure out what to do... then Pedro decided to get on his kayak and go for it.... We didn't expect that.

"As a water photographer myself I was trying to get into the water but it was impossible, the water was about 90 degrees Celsius and there were lots of lava particles floating that could burn anything in seconds... even the kayaks came out of the water with some 'scars' from the floating lava!!!"

Socci's incredible images say it all as the fiery molten rock can be seen oozing its way into the water just a few feet away from the daredevil kayakers. Like a scene straight from an exciting action sequence, the area is filled with blinding steam, wavy waters, and flaming lava. In fact, Oliva even caught one of his oars on fire due to its exposure to the lava flows. As a cautionary message, he says, "I hope people don't see these images and think that it is safe to paddle so close to the lava because really it's not safe at all."

A Drive-In for Bicycles

by John Farrier

Drive-In

The government of Zurich expects that the number of bicyclists in that city will double by 2025. It wants the local transportation infrastructure to be ready and is encouraging designers to help. This is the Velokafi. It's a drive-in table on the terrace of the Rathaus Café, a popular eatery. Just ride your bike in and order a meal, all without dismounting.

Korea becomes 11th Nation to build homegrown helicopter

by Dhiram

surion-2
South Korea has developed a home-grown, light utility helicopter, becoming the 11th nation to build a chopper with its own technology. The KAI Surion, a twin-engined light utility helicopter is designed and developed jointly by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Eurocopter to meet the requirements of the South Korean Army and Air Force. The helicopter will be used in a variety of applications, including troop assault, search and rescue, tactical lift, liaison and medical evacuation. It can accommodate a pilot, co-pilot, two gunners and nine troops. The two-engine transport utility chopper named Surion took more than six years to build and cost about W1.3 trillion (US$ 1166076600).

inside_KAI_surion_helicopter
The Surion comes equipped with an auto-pilot system and a three-dimensional electronic map that enables it to fly at night and in extreme weather conditions. The Surion helicopter will replace the ageing UH-1H attack helicopter and the 500MD light helicopter fleet of South Korean Army and Air Force. KAI is also planning to build civilian variants of the helicopter in 2012. Eurocopter has joined hands with S&T Dynamics of Kyungnam, South Korea, to develop the drive system for the helicopter. A total of 245 Surion helicopters were ordered by the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA). The deliveries began in 2012 and will last for eight to ten years.

How to Deactivate (i.e. Calm Down) Your Crazy Cat in Seconds Using This Simple Trick

Cats. Whether you love 'em or hate 'em, you've got to admit—they've got minds of their own. While this makes them incredibly entertaining at times, it can also cause tons of issues for their owners. Trying to "train" a cat is usually an exercise in futility. This is because cats are solitary animals, so unlike a dog, your cat doesn't see you as the leader of its pack. Clipping its nails, getting it into a carrier, and taking it to vet appointments are activities that can result in a very grumpy kitty, and probably a few scratches (at least). If you've tried everything short of sedatives to... more
