Baldur's Gate 3 Deleted Save Bug Continues on Xbox, Larian Offers a Cross-Save Work-Around

by Amelia Zollner

It's been a few weeks since Larian Studios surprised players with an Xbox Series X|S release during the Game Awards, and some players have faced a bug that deletes their saves upon exiting the game throughout the holidays. Microsoft hasn't yet been able to patch it — but Larian Studios now has a temporary fix.

Yesterday, in a post on X/Twitter, Larian Studios acknowledged the bug and said Microsoft hasn't been able to fix it yet because less people are working over the holidays. Instead, it announced the following work-around that lets players make sure their games are saved:

  1. Create a Larian account at https://larian.com/account.
  2. Go to the options menu from the main menu. Under gameplay, activate cross-saves, linking your Larian and Xbox accounts.
  3. From now on, your last 5 saves will automatically be uploaded to the larian servers. It is important that you do not exit the game before the upload is finished. The upload is finished when the message “Syncing cloud save” is no longer visible.
  4. If the firmware bug occurs, you will need to re-activate the cross-save functionality in the options screen. This will give you access to the save games that were successfully uploaded.

Larian Studios mentioned that the issue is happening because of a firmware issue that causes the game to believe a save was completed when it hasn't been fully committed to the disk. It also plans to increase the number of save games that get uploaded via cloud saves to make this work-around easier for players.

"We completely understand that losing progress is frustrating, and unacceptable," Larian Studios wrote in the post. "We’re doing everything we can to ensure this problem - which we understand is unique - is resolved as quickly as possible, and we’ll keep you up to date with progress."

This isn't the first time Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox has had issues with deleted save files. Despite its issues on Xbox, however, Baldur's Gate 3 has had a great few months. We gave the game a 10/10 in our review, calling it "the new high-water mark for CRPGs." Since then, it's gone on to take home a wealth of awards, including Game of the Year at the Game Awards as well as IGN's own Best RPG and Best PC Game awards.

Netflix Won't Release As Many Movies Each Year Going Forward

Daniel Whitehill

and they are raising prices. Netflix sucks shit.

For a long time, Netflix was cranking out movies to the tune of as many as one movie per week in 2021. That strategy is changing going forward, though, as Variety reports that Netflix will now aim to make between 25 and 30 new movies per year, down from about 50 annually in the past.

Speaking to Variety, Netflix movie boss Scott Stuber said Netflix's push for more, more, more was its attempt to play catch-up in a landscape dominated by existing movie studios that have been around for decades.

"We were growing a new studio. We'd only been doing this for a few years, and we were up against 100-year-old companies," Stuber said. "So you have to ask yourself, 'What is your business model?' And for a while it was just making sure that we had enough. We needed volume."

The Fall of the House of Usher Trailer Previews Mike Flanagan's Modern Take on Edgar Allen Poe Story

by Alex Stedman
Daniel Whitehill

Uhg. How does this guy keep getting work? Even the trailer is tedious this time. They don't even try to hide the tedi-ocrity. Yes. I made up a new word to define his type of talent. And he's a master.

The full trailer for Mike Flanagan’s latest horror limited series, The Fall of the House of Usher, is here, and it mixes all the horror vibes Flanagan is known for with a heavy helping of family drama.

In the trailer, which Netflix released today, we get a look at the Usher family – or, as the trailer calls them, “a collection of stunted hearts.” The series is based on the Edgar Allen Poe story of the same name, and there’s plenty of Poe-inspired spookiness in the trailer mixed in with some Succession-style family fighting. Flanagan’s no stranger to horror inspired by family trauma, so it’ll be interesting to see how his take on the 1839 Poe tale plays out.

Per Netflix’s official logline: “Ruthless siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.”

Fans of Flanagan’s other series like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass will also recognize some familiar faces in the series, including Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan, and Carla Gugino. Oh, and Mark Hamill’s in there too.

The rest of the cast also includes Carl Lumbly, Michael Trucco, Paola Nuñez, Henry Thomas, Kyleigh Curran, Sauriyan Sapkota, Zach Gilford, Willa Fitzgerald, Katie Parker, Malcolm Goodwin, and Annabeth Gish.

It’s only Flanagan’s latest collaboration with Netflix, mostly recently releasing The Midnight Club last year. The Fall of the House of Usher, meanwhile, will hit the streaming service just in time for Halloween on Oct. 12 with eight episodes.

PSA: The Super Mario Bros. Movie Arrives on Peacock Tomorrow

by Katie Reul
Daniel Whitehill

WOO HOO! Can't wait. I've waited forever for this shit.

Starting Aug. 3, Mario and Luigi fans across the globe can watch the world-famous plumbers journey through the Mushroom Kingdom — from their own homes. The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be available for streaming exclusively on Peacock effective tomorrow, as originally announced last month.

It’s already been available on digital platforms to rent or buy, but Peacock subscribers will be able to watch the biggest hit of the year (although Barbie is hot on its tail) as part of the price of their subscription.

In addition to the film, Peacock users will be able to access a range of bonus content that was previously available through the DVD and Blu-Ray “Power-Up Edition.” Behind-the-scenes interviews with the film’s leading voice actors will be available, as well as a sing-along lyric video set to “Peaches,” a passionate serenade from Jack Black’s Bowser to Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy).

Streamers will also be able to partake in an immersive mode of viewing — power-ups and all — through The Super Mario Bros. Movie Field Guide. The bonus feature allows viewers to interact with the world around them as the film’s cast explains the uses of each of the power-ups specific to their characters.

Directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, and Pierre Leduc, the film features a star-studded cast of voice actors, including Black, Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day play the film’s titular brothers Mario and Luigi, respectively.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the 10th animated film to ever pass the $1 billion milestone at the global box office — a feat it accomplished in 26 days. The Illumination movie is so far the highest-grossing movie of the year both domestically and globally.

And while there’s something mournful about the film making its transition from theatrical screenings to family movie night showings, perhaps Mario and co. are best enjoyed from at home while wrapped in a blanket, similar to their video game counterparts. Either way, it’s time for a rewatch.

Elon Musk Announces Daily Twitter Limitations as Thousands Report Problems Seeing Tweets

by Adam Bankhurst
Daniel Whitehill

Watching this has been an amazing dumpster fire. It's like they are doing everything they can do tank this company. I just can't believe someone hasn't come up with a competitor yet.

Following a ton of reports from users saying they can't see new Tweets and are being greeted by a "Rate limit exceeded" error message, Elon Musk has announced new daily Twitter limitations that include allowing unverified users to only read 600 posts per day.

Musk took to Twitter to share the news, saying these "temporary limits" are to "address extreme levels of data scarping & system manipulation." In addition to limiting unverified accounts to "600 posts/day," new unverified accounts will only be able to read 300 posts per day.

If you are a verified Twitter Blue account, however, you will be able to read 6,000 posts per day.

Musk gave no further clarification or timetable, but this change has already caused thousands of people to report outages as they are not able to see new Tweets and are getting the previously mentioned "rate limit exceeded" error message.

According to DownDetector.com, there have been over 1,000 reports of Twitter outages since 4am PT/7am ET this morning, July 1, and the number has continued to be well over 1,000, with its peak reaching 7,483 at 8:14am PT/11:14am ET.

My Twitter account is no longer verified and I am not subscribed to Twitter Blue, and I can barely use Twitter on my iPhone without being given the error message you can see below. It appears to work a little better on desktop at the moment, but that could change at any moment.

This is just another chapter in Elon Musk's Twitter buyout saga, which all began back when he offered to buy Twitter for $44 billion in April 2022. This move also follows Twitter's new decision to require users to sign in to even view tweets.

This 55-Inch 4K TV Is Free And Has Two Screens--But There Is A Catch

Daniel Whitehill

This seems like a nightmare!

Looking for a new TV but don't want to pay anything for it? The founder of Pluto TV has announced a new initiative that includes giving anyone a free 55-inch 4K TV--but there is a pretty big catch. This TV has two screens, one to watch the content you want and the other that displays advertisements non-stop.

The TV is called "Telly," and it runs on an operating system called TellyOS. You can reserve a unit at www.freetelly.com. Telly is giving away "the first" 500,000 free units and they will ship this summer. Presumably another restock will happen later.

Telly founder and CEO Ilya Pozin says Telly represents the "biggest innovation in television since color." Pozin said companies make billions off ads seen on TV and consumers have had to pay for the TV and what they watch. Now, the TV itself is free with Telly.

Extraction 2 Trailer: See Chris Hemsworth Shoot Down A Helicopter With A Minigun On A Train

Daniel Whitehill

This trailer is awesome. As much as I love Hemsworth, Director Sam Hargrave is the real star. Glad he's back for the second one.

Netflix has released the first trailer for Extraction 2, showing Chris Hemsworth returning as Tyler Rake to once again rescue hostages in a very inhospitable environment.

At the end of 2020's Extraction, Rake completed his mission to save a young boy and seemingly died. But somehow he survived, and in the sequel, he's tasked with saving yet another prisoner. This time, the Australian mercenary is hired to rescue the family of a Georgian gangster from a prison. A lot of action will ensue, based on this first trailer, including a high-stakes mission on a train where Rake stands on the train and uses a minigun to down a helicopter in the snow. The trailer also fills in some gaps that help explain how Rake managed to survive the events of the first movie.

The original Extraction broke Netflix viewership records, and while the story left something to be desired, the action sequences were memorable, including an 11-minute one-shot with the director strapping himself to the front of car, putting himself very much in danger, to get the shot.

Poker Face Season 2 Confirmed for Peacock

by Michaela Zee
Daniel Whitehill

This show is awesome. Be sure to check it out!

Poker Face has been renewed for Season 2 by Peacock.

Created by Rian Johnson, the mystery series follows Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, who has the ability to recognize when someone is lying. Season 1 debuted on Jan. 26 to positive reviews, with Samantha Nelson giving the first four episodes an 8/10 for IGN, writing that Johnson and Lyonne have "brilliantly recreated Columbo’s howcatchem formula."

“Poker Face is one of those rare, undeniable shows that we all fell in love with from the start, but the critical acclaim and viewer response has been beyond our wildest dreams,” Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for television and streaming at NBCUniversal, said in a statement. “Working alongside the creative genius of Rian Johnson, Natasha Lyonne and Ram Bergman, along with our partners at MRC and T-Street, has been a spectacular ride, and we can’t wait to hit the road for another season as we continue to build momentum across Peacock’s originals slate.”

Poker Face’s renewal comes with episodes from Season 1 still left to premiere on Peacock. The 10-episode season will release its seventh episode Thursday, with new episodes dropping weekly through March 9.

Johnson and Lyonne executive produce the series alongside Ram Bergman, Nena Rodrigue, Iain B. MacDonald, and showrunners Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman. Maya Rudolph and Danielle Renfrew Behrens serve as co-executive producers.

Liam Neeson, Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer Team On Naked Gun Reboot For Paramount - Report

Daniel Whitehill

arg. I love the Naked Gun, but Neeson as a Derbin? I don't know about this...

The classic '80s and '90s slapstick comedy movie franchise The Naked Gun is reportedly getting new life at Paramount with a revival film directed by The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer and starring Liam Neeson. Deadline was first to report.

Seth MacFarlane--who in 2021 was rumored to be developing a The Naked Gun sequel--will executive produce the film alongside Erica Huggins via their company Fuzzy Door. MacFarlane has reportedly have co-written a script with David Zucker and Pat Proft, based on a story by Zucker, Profit, and Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant both of Reno 911! and The State fame.

No plot details are yet known, but one rumored detail is that Neeson may be playing the son of Det. Sgt. Frank Derbin, rather than stepping into the role made famous by Leslie Nielsen.

The Internet Reacts to Chris Pratt's Mario Voice

by Logan Plant
Daniel Whitehill

Sadly it's true. Chris Pratt sucks shit as Mario. It's tragic.

Ever since the internet learned that Chris Pratt would voice Mario in Nintendo and Illumination's Super Mario Bros. Movie, there's been one question hanging over everyone's heads: What the heck will he sound like?

Today, thanks to The Super Mario Bros. Movie Nintendo Direct, we finally have our answer. It turns out, most people think Chris Pratt's Mario voice... Sounds just like Chris Pratt. To be fair, there's not much to go on. In the movie's debut trailer, Mario only says two full lines: "What is this place?" and "Mushroom Kingdom here we come!" Still, fans instantly noticed that it pretty much sounds like Pratt is just using his normal speaking voice.

While this may be a predictable outcome, Pratt himself didn't help matters by hyping the vocal performance up, saying that his take on Nintendo's iconic plumber is "unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before.” He's technically not wrong, since Chris Pratt has never appeared in the Mario world before this film, but that didn't stop the internet from having a field day with the big voice reveal.

The Internet Reacts to Chris Pratt's Mario Voice

But even if fans didn't like Chris Pratt's Mario voice very much, they were generally pretty positive about the rest of the trailer.

Meanwhile, the reception seems to be much more positive for Jack Black's take on Bowser, as the actor showed up at New York City Comic Con to show off more of his villainous voice. We'll be able to hear more of Pratt, Black, and the rest of the cast when The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes to theaters on April 7, 2023.

For more on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, check out our articles on the movie's first official poster and trailer. And, let us know what Nintendo franchise you think deserves a big screen adaptation next.

Margaux Review - This Murdering Smart House Needs A Renovation

Daniel Whitehill

This looks so stupid. AND like something I'd totally watch.

In 2022, most people have some element of a smart house in their home, whether it's a virtual assistant or smart electronics. But what if there was a whole house made up of smart tech and 3D printed elements inside that heeded to your every whim? And what if, for some reason, it wanted to kill you? That's the plot of Margaux, a film that has an incredibly interesting concept, with an execution that falls fatally flat.

In Margaux, a group of smart college kids head out on break with each other at a smart house, whose AI is named Margaux. Each room caters to their favorite things: social media, food, and there's even a room dedicated to sexual experimentation. For some context, in the opening scene of the movie, a couple were going to use out hollowed oranges for sexual purposes. When they finally settle down in their room in Margaux, there is a plate of hallowed-oranges waiting for them--for sexing, apparently. It may be the funniest thing committed to film in decades. There is also Hannah, who has no social media and refuses to download the Margaux app to her phone. After meeting the characters, it becomes very obvious how each story for each of them will play out because you've seen this movie before.

Netflix With Ads Will Cost $7-$9 Per Month, Report Says

Daniel Whitehill

You have to PAY and you get ads? Sounds like cable.

Netflix's new ad-based tier will cost between $7-$9 per month, a new report from Bloomberg claims. This would be around half the cost of Netflix's most popular ad-free plan, which goes for $15.50/month.

The report went on to say that Netflix's new ad tier will have about four minutes of commercials per hour, and that ads will be show before and during shows, but not after.

For now, the idea is to put ads on Netflix's own TV shows and some licensed from other companies. There won't be ads on children's programming or during original movies, the report said. It added that ads won't be tailored to the specific viewer and Netflix is aiming to avoid repeating ads again and again as some rival services do.

Disney Plus and Hulu Are Both Getting Price Hikes

by Kat Bailey
Daniel Whitehill

This sucks. All these platforms raising prices.

Disney+ and Hulu will both be receiving price hikes in both their ad-supported and premium tiers, Disney announced today.

The price hike is timed with the impending release of Disney+'s ad-supported tier, which will cost $7.99. The ad-free version, meanwhile, will rise to $10.99 — an increase of $3 per month.

As for Hulu, it will jump $2 per month, rising from $12.99 to $14.99 on October 10. Meanwhile, the ad-supported verion will rise from $6.99 to $7.99.

The price hikes come amid strong subscriber increases for Disney+, which rose to 151 million subscriptions. However, those increases have been tempered by large losses. According to Disney's financials released today, Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ have combined to lose $1.1 billion.

The programming has also been quite successful. Disney+ has established itself with a slew of successful MCU and Star Wars shows, with Andor and She-Hulk just around the corner, while Hulu has found big success with Prey.

Disney+'s ad-supported tier launches December 8.

Behold The Visually Infuriating World Of The "TV Too High" Subreddit

Daniel Whitehill

OMFG. I've been saying this for YEARS and of course there is a sub-reddit. I blame flat TVs. For some reason humans first confused them with paintings and started hanging them too high and over fire places and it's NOT natural and not good for your neck. FINALLY, I am not alone! /end rant

The /r/TVTooHigh subreddit exploded in popularity this week after a Washington Post reporter posted a Twitter thread full of images from the subreddit, setting the internet ablaze as Twitter users pondered what would possess someone to mount their television so high up on the wall that it nearly touches the ceiling. Now the internet can't stop talking about the subreddit, which is filled with mildly infuriating images depicting some of the oddest television mounting choices known to man.

The images of these unusually positioned televisions are enough to make anyone's eye twitch (and make their neck hurt). Some of the subreddit's top posts include an image of a TV mounted to the top of a slanted bedroom wall, a television placed so high it's parallel to the second floor of the house, an image of a relative watching TV in his preferred TV-watching position, a photo of a technician installing a TV set above a doorway in a large foyer, and the pièce de résistance: an interior photo of a posh home in a wealthy neighborhood, with a television set mounted to the ceiling of the living room.

When faced with posts like these, subreddit members often jump to place blame on the technician who installed the television. After all, what kind of professional would mount a TV to the ceiling (or mere centimeters below it), especially knowing how much strain this positioning can put on the necks of customers who spend a lot of time in front of the television. While inexperience, negligence, or just plain laziness can certainly play a part in especially poor installation jobs, it turns out that more often than not, the customer is who dictates the placement of the TV set. While technicians can offer their opinion regarding the ideal spot for the television's placement, the customer is ultimately who decides what goes where--and they frequently disregard the advice given by experienced technicians.

Some BMW Car Features Can Only be Unlocked With Microtransactions

by Ryan Dinsdale
Daniel Whitehill

It's this kinda shit that would stop me from buying a BMW. That and they suck, but this is particularly shitty.

Heated seats are the latest microtransaction available in some high-end BMW cars, joining other features such as advanced cruise control and automatic beam switching as monthly subscriptions.

As reported by The Verge, BMW currently offers the feature in the UK, Germany, New Zealand, and South Africa for the equivalent of around $18 a month or $415 for lifetime access, available to purchase on its store.

If a customer's car has the option to buy heated seats or other add-ons then the components and functionality already exist within the vehicle, but BMW has a software block that prevent them from being used without paying.

Jake Groves shared his experience with the microtransactions on Twitter (above), saying that, as he was driving the BMW 530e, he pressed the high beam assist button only to be told that he first had to purchase this on the store, where it's priced at the equivalent of around $12 a month or $237 for unlimited access.

There are several other features available to purchase – some of which can only be bought outright for up to £750 (or $888) – like the alert that notifies the driver when they're nearing a speed camera, something which is often free if you use your phone as a satnav.

The full list includes: active cruise control with stop and go function, adaptive M suspension, Apple CarPlay preparation, the BMW drive recorder, the BMW safety camera information, Driving Assistant Plus, front seat heating, high beam assistant, IconicSounds Sport, the map update package, the online entertainment voucher, and steering wheel heating.

BMW's rival Tesla has introduced some wacky new features recently too, such as a karaoke mic for its cars and the ability to play games including The Witcher 3.

The Last Of Us PS5 Remake Leaks With September Release Date, PC Release Coming Later

Daniel Whitehill

This is such a bullshit cash grab it's crazy.

The Last of Us is making the jump to a third generation of PlayStation consoles and coming to PlayStation 5. The announcement comes after Twitter user Wario64 noticed a PlayStation store listing of the game earlier today, complete with accompanying trailer. According to the listing, the game is scheduled to release on September 2.

In the trailer that was surely meant to air during one this week's Not-E3 press conferences--most likely Summer Game Fest Live--it was revealed that the upcoming remake has been "built from the ground up for PlayStation 5." It was also revealed that, in addition to a PlayStation 5 release, The Last of Us is also coming to PC, though the release date was not included in the trailer. This continues PlayStation's ongoing trend of releasing some of its biggest exclusive titles on PC, allowing a wider audience to experience its narrative-rich titles.

Two editions of the game will be available to purchase: Standard edition ($60 USD) and Firefly edition ($100 USD). While what the difference is between these editions has yet to be revealed, both versions come with Left Behind, a DLC expansion that follows Ellie during the events leading up to The Last of Us as well as a brief period of time she is separated from Joel during the game.

The Next HDMI Revision Means Longer Ultra High-Speed Cables

Daniel Whitehill

Do you know how long I spent with the spiders under my house swapping out HDMI cables until i found out that the length was the issue?!?!?! Let's just say I'm very excited about this update. And yes, I am posting about about a new cable and I know that I am a nerd. No need to point it out.

The latest amendment to the HDMI 2.1a spec, which adds HDMI Cable Power, will let us use much longer cables, separating our gear from our screens (via FlatPanelsHD).

The more data you're pumping through a passive cable, the shorter that cable is going to need to be to preserve the data flowing through it. That's the case with HDMI 2.1a when compared to its much older cousin, HDMI 2.0. Older HDMI cables could go 30 feet or more while still retaining full bandwidth and connection quality, but HDMI 2.1a represents a huge jump in bandwidth and data needs compared to those older versions, and often maxes out at 10 feet, notes cable maker CableMatters.

That's where HDMI Cable Power comes in. To make HDMI 2.1a go further than that 10-foot stretch, you need an active--powered--HDMI cable. The HDMI cables behind most of our televisions are passive, and current active cables require a separate power source fed in through a third connector to achieve those longer lengths. HDMI Cable Power will provide power through the HDMI connector itself, instead of adding the extra complexity of a separate connector. HDMI CablePower cables will still, like active HDMI cables, be one-directional, meaning that there's a defined source and destination end rather than the two being interchangeable like they are with passive HDMI cables.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe Release Date Announced

Ha ha. OMG. I know I'm old, but totally can't wait to see this.

There’s good news for fans of the Beavis and Butt-Head series. The release date for the upcoming film, Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe, was revealed today alongside a new trailer.

Mike Judge's classic duo's return will premiere internationally on the streaming service Paramount+ on Thursday, June 23. It will be the iconic duo’s first appearance in over ten years.

Beavis and Butt-Head are dipping their toes into sci-fi and Judge says the new film could easily “sit atop all future lists of the Dumbest Science Fiction Movies Ever Made.”

The movie, voiced, produced, and directed by Mike Judge, will have the two not-so-bright characters working at a space camp as part of juvenile sentencing. There they excel and are asked to join the mission to space, but ruin the mission and are left for dead. They eventually make their way into a black hole and travel from 1998 to 2022 and meet an alternative version of themselves.

Besides the new film, the duo can be seen in all their glory as the full library of 200+ remastered episodes will be available exclusively on the service alongside South Park at a later time. A new Beavis and Butt-head series is also coming later this year.

Earlier this year, Mike Judge offered a glimpse at what the two might look like now, middle-age spread and all. It has yet to be confirmed if this glimpse into the future will be seen in either the new movie or series, but perhaps that will be the alternate version they meet.

An exclusive look at the new movie will debut at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which air live Sunday, June 5, at 8PM, ET/PT.
