Vacuum-Based Toilets from Norway Use 90% Less Water

by Rain Noe

Norway-based Jets Vacuum is a company that makes vacuum-based toilets for ocean vessels and offshore platforms. After enlisting the help of Norwegian design consultancy EGGS Design, they expanded into the on-land market with the Jets Pearl, intended for domestic applications where water is too hard to come by to flush down the toilet (think cabins and remote locations).

"Their vacuum flush systems use 90% less water than any conventional toilet, therefore creating less sewage," explains EGGS Design. Beyond the environmental advantages, the consultancy sought to make the toilet user-friendly—even for those not using the toilet:

"To create a flawless toilet," they explain, "we had to fully consider all users of the product, taking into account not only the needs of users themselves but also those of cleaning personnel, service technicians and installation engineers.

"The result is Jets Pearl, a toilet with no sharp edges, awkward corners or hard to reach mechanical fasteners. Both the seat and lid is fastened to the wall, creating ample room for cleaning behind the basin. The water surface within the basin is formed to prevent any possible splash-backs and the basin and seat is oval shaped and longer than normal, allowing for maximum ergonomic comfort, regardless of users' body size."

Jets also offers a floor-mounted model:

And while incorporating a vacuum toilet into a home of course requires installing a vacuum pump…

...it also opens up design possibilities for the architect or designer. The vacuum pipes are narrower in diameter than standard toilet plumbing, and you no longer need to consider gravity when choosing the bathroom location. "The piping can be installed vertically in thin walls and in ceilings, because vacuum systems are able to lift sewage upward from the toilet," Jets explains. "You can even install a vacuum toilet in locations without running water or mains electric power."

Green roofs and solar bring Snhetta's Wendelstrand to life

by Laura Cowan

Snøhetta and developer Next Step have designed a green, walkable neighborhood near idyllic Landvettersjøen Lake in Sweden. The project will transform a quarry into an eco-friendly housing project called Wendelstrand. Wooden homes with green roofs will allow for slow living within a 15-minute drive from Sweden’s second-largest city, Gothenburg.

A curved building in a green landscape.

This is all a bit of advanced planning. Projected to open in 2024, Wendelstrand will make use of a quarry that is only now being put to rest. The south-facing, sloping landscape of the quarry will soon be transformed into housing that will cover 70,000 square meters of land, with 10,000 square meters reserved for preschools and senior housing. Walkable paths will connect play and recreation areas for families. Electric car chargers and bike storage and lanes are also planned to connect this development to the surrounding community.

A curved building in a green landscape.

A public meeting place and restaurant called Lakehouse completes the neighborhood, giving residents spaces to connect and eat. The Lakehouse is a wooden, sustainable building that will blend seamlessly into its surroundings. The sunny west-facing plaza will feature a cafe and outdoor seating.

A large sitting area with several windows.

A natural creek running through the area ties the neighborhood together and outlines Wendelstrand’s residential districts. Townhouses will feature private gardens, and buildings of various heights will fill out the neighborhood to avoid monotonous high-rise apartments cluttering the landscape. Terraced housing will follow the slope of the west-facing hills, allowing for optimal sunlight through the day and beautiful views of the lake.

An angular green roof.

Nearby parking facilities have green roofs to accommodate sports fields and playgrounds. The roofs will also harvest the maximum amount of solar energy possible through photovoltaic solar cells. Any roofs facing north will be covered with plants and grass to encourage biodiversity and facilitate rainwater management.

A lakeside landscape at dusk.

“We hope Lakehouse will be an important catalyst for creating enthusiasm, attractiveness, and cohesion in the area and become an inviting destination for the entire region,” said Rikard Jaucis, senior architect at Snøhetta. “Furthermore, we believe that this project can be a model for innovative and sustainable housing development focusing on wood as a building material and in that way bringing down the carbon footprint.”

Fixing an Architectural Experiment Gone Wrong

by Rain Noe

Experimentation in design is a tricky thing. Proponents of experimentation may argue it is required in order for designs to evolve. Critics may argue that experimentation is often wielded in the name of fashion rather than function.

Experimentation in architecture can be particularly perilous. More than a few architects referred to as "ahead of their time" have designed experimental structures later found to have significant problems. Frank Lloyd Wright famously ignored a structural engineering firm's warnings about Fallingwater, which later required expensive repairs to reinforce the dramatic—and failing—cantilevered concrete balconies. Frank Gehry's design of the organically-shaped Stata Center for MIT "resulted in pervasive leaks, cracks and drainage problems that have required costly repairs," leading MIT to sue Gehry.

The latest famous architect whose widely-acclaimed design is now falling apart is Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh's design for Hill House in Helensburgh, Scotland, perhaps his most famous residential commission, is "dissolving like an aspirin in a glass of water." The culprit is a poor choice of materials for the exterior cladding.

Hill House (CC BY-SA 2.5)

In the video at the bottom, Tom Scott will show you the effects and explain the solution. Before we get to that, I'll explain the problem (Scott spends more time on the solution, and does an excellent job with it).

A traditional stone house finishing technique in Scotland is called harling. It's a plastering process whereby the exterior of a stone house is coated in lime. While the lime is wet, small stones and pebbles are pressed into the surface. Once the mixture dries, the house now has a protective coating that still allows the building to breathe; lime is porous, and allows moisture to evaporate.

An example of harling

Rather than using lime, however, Mackintosh elected to harl Hill House using Portland cement. Whereas lime was at the time (1904) a tried-and-true material in use for centuries, Portland cement was relatively newfangled and offered a cost savings. Alas, applying it to Hill House "has led to maintenance problems ever since," according to an essay called "Mackintosh and Materials," by Ranald MacInnes, Head of Heritage Management, Historic Scotland. "We now know that cement is harmful to otherwise traditionally constructed buildings because it tends to craze, allowing water to penetrate but not to escape through natural evaporation."

Hell House

In 2017 the owner of the house, the National Trust for Scotland, reported the following grim news:

"Unfortunately for [original owners] the Blackies, who took up residence in 1904, and every owner of the house ever since, the Portland cement has never been a real match for the Scottish west coast weather. From the day the harling mix was applied, it has let in moisture.
"Now, after decades of driving wind and rain saturating the walls of the Hill House, the building's long-term survival, including its unique interior finishes, is threatened. Over many years, solutions have been attempted by the property's various owners but none has solved the problem. It now falls to the National Trust for Scotland to take radical steps to stop further deterioration and find the elusive answer."

Those radical steps consist of building a gigantic "drying box" both to keep the rain off of the house and to let it dry out over a number of years.

Fascinatingly, chain mail has been chosen for the box's walls; apparently they're enough to stop sideways rain while still allowing air to pass through.

In Tom Scott's video, you get a fantastic look at the structure, and thanks to the elevated walkways the NTS has installed, you can appreciate the house from angles previously impossible to attain:

Use This Site to Find the Cheapest and Fastest Way to Send a Package

by Elizabeth Yuko

Unless your job involves a lot of shipping, it can be hard to know which service best suits your needs—and your budget. Maybe UPS is cheaper in some parts of the country than others for the type of package you need to send. Or perhaps FedEx has better rates on overnight shipping to your destination.

Bang and Olufsen meets LAYER design for a modular bookshelf speaker that embodies the tiny but mighty spirit!

by Neha Mistry

Bang and Olufsen’s collaboration with Benjamin Hubert is designed to deliver an impact while blending in.

Wired Speakers, in my humble opinion, are the bane of modern interior design. Having an audiophile as a husband means there are long yet lengthy arguments of aesthetics over audio, but there is hope! The latest in the range of these modern, space-saving speakers is LAYER Design and Bang and Olufsen’s collaboration named the BeoSound Emerge that emerges stealthily as a 6.7cm thick, book-inspired speaker that’ll deliver the punch without taking up any precious real estate.

A vision in delicate craftsmanship and soft lines, using a signature mix of wood, fabric, and metal, the speaker, is designed like a book that is slightly open at the edge. The book’s spine is where the B&O logo is placed, just like an author’s name rests on the spine of their creation. “The vision for Beosound Emerge was to create the slimmest speaker possible that could still deliver full range, ultra-wide sound despite its size through its revolutionary driver configuration. Whether placed on a bookshelf in the bedroom or a tight corner of the kitchen, Beosound Emerge’s slim design allows you to extend your music to a new room or complement an existing speaker in the same area without taking up extra space”, says Christoffer Poulsen, Senior Vice President and Head of Product Management at Bang & Olufsen. And they have the specifications to back it up – with a 4in woofer, a 1.45in mid-range driver, and a 0.6in tweeter, which B&O says can cover a frequency range of 45Hz – 22,000Hz. It includes smart assistant connectivity to wrap up the modern-day packaging (including Google Assistant, Airplay 2, Chromecast, Bluetooth).

Speaking about Beosound Emerge, Benjamin Hubert says, “As a studio, we like to build long-term partnerships with the brands we work with. Beosound Emerge is our second collaboration with Bang & Olufsen. The super-slim speaker has been designed to minimize the physical footprint and maximize the audio output to respond to the real estate in people’s homes being at an unprecedented premium. At LAYER, we believe that technology should enable happiness but doesn’t necessarily need to be an expression in its own right, so it was equally important for us to create a new architectural format with a strong sculptural sensibility and a more domestic material palette that will stand out in the saturated audio market while seamlessly fitting into the home.” While my heart is set on the classic Gold Tone, they have a Black Anthracite version to match a more brutalist schematic.

The Scandinavian design carries through with modularity in the design – individual parts of the speaker can be easily replaced in case of any changes or updates that you want to make, increasing the product’s longevity. In pure form, the design bears a resemblance to the Sony PS5. Maybe verticle designs are the new norm! While the classic aesthetics and approach are forever gold, it would be great if they can rope in someone like dbrand to create custom covers – for sure, I would be in line to buy some of my bookshelf favorites, like a custom illustration of Harry Potter book covers!

Designer: Bang and Olufsen with LAYER Design.

Behind the scenes with Benjamin Hubert, founder of LAYER Design.

Beosound Emerge with Beosound Balance, a previous speaker from the same series.

Whatever your aesthetics, Beosound Emerge can uplift the space.

The slim design is designed to blend into a bookshelf, compromising on the size, but not the quality. Didn’t we say tiny size, mighty sound!

The device is made with premium materials like oak, knitted fabric, and aluminum.

The design draws a parallel to IKEA’s Symfonisk series, where products are designed to deliver double functionality – like a bedside lamp with speakers or the latest being a picture frame emitting working as a speaker.

You can even pair two Emerge’s together to create a stereo pair.

The Light Oak model retails for $899 while there’s a cheaper, if still premium-priced Black Anthracite model for $699, to be released by October 2021.

B&O says you’ll be able to replace that part with the latest version and continue using the speaker as the removable component has enough processing power to accommodate updates and new features “for years to come.”

Husbands Tweeting About Marriage

by A B

We already featured a gallery of women tweeting about the daily struggles of marriage, now let’s check out what husbands have to say about their experience.

Before I got married I didn't even know there was a wrong way to put the milk back in the fridge

My wife is so much better looking than me that a cashier just put a plastic divider down in the middle of our groceries...

Marriage is just texting each other "Do we need anything from the grocery store?" a bunch of times until one of you dies.

Before marriage I never realized that forgetting to put the toilet seat down is a political statement.

Wife: Why are you breathing like that?

Marriage is mostly about knowing which hand towels you can use and which ones are for the better people who visit your wife's home.

When my wife pisses me off, I get on her Pinterest and pin lots of mediocre shit, like cupcakes that just look like cupcakes.

My wife said I need to grow up.

Relationship status: My wife asked me what I wanted for dinner and then told me I was wrong.

I don’t understand how God can have 10 commandments for the whole world, and my ex wife had 152 just for our house!

Married sex is like traveling. It takes planning, the conditions need to be right, and everyone has to pee before getting started.

My wife is finally coming home from her week long trip, so you know what I'm getting tonight... yelled at. I'm gonna get yelled at.

Married life.

Thermostat negotiations.

The Mrs and I have been married so long she can finish my sentences.

My wife wanted two kittens but I am the man in this house so we got two kittens

Couples have an amount they can spend up to without discussing with each other. Mine is around $50. My wife's is around $643.27. Apparently

*pulls curtain back while wife is in the shower* me: Are we - stop screaming, it's just me- are we out of Cheetos?

Embracing flaws.

My wife just opened the car door for me. It would have been a nice gesture if we hadn't been going 70 mph.

Wife: it’s like every man on earth has to share one brain.

Texting with wife.

My wife managed to open a jar of pickles herself and I am now nonessential.

Rainn Wilson launches climate change web series featuring Greta Thunberg

by Teresa Bergen

A new web series, “An Idiot’s Guide to Climate Change”, will help shift viewers’ understanding of climate change from theoretical to terrifyingly real. Actor Rainn Wilson, well-known for his role as Dwight in “The Office”, takes viewers along as he visits what he calls “Ground Zero for climate change.”

Wilson is a funny and relatable guide through the six-part series that charts his course from “well-intentioned, but uninformed, liberal” to devoted climate activist. Wilson takes viewers along to global climate marches and conferences, the melting Greenland ice sheet and an Icelandic Toyota factory that is trying to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Along the way, he talks to leading climate scientists and global activists, including Greta Thunberg, arctic scientist David Hik, astronomer and climate activist Sævar Helgi Bragason, atmospheric scientist Jennifer Francis and Future Coalition’s executive director Katie Eder.

Related: What to know about Hulu’s Greta Thunberg documentary

Rainn Wilson in Greenland

“Before our current devastating pandemic, I took a trip to Greenland with some climate scientists to explore that other devastating future pandemic — climate change,” Wilson said. “I knew nothing about climate science and global warming, and I’d never seen a glacier before. The amazing, fun, and terrifying journey seen in ‘An Idiots Guide to Climate Change’ really opened my eyes. It was my idiotic way of exploring this extremely non-idiotic issue.”

Wilson is co-founder of the content studio SoulPancake, which has more than 1 billion video views on its digital platforms and has won several web video awards. The studio is known for its Instagram live series, “Hey There, Human”, which was created as a response to COVID-19 stay-at-home orders.

New episodes of “An Idiot’s Guide to Climate Change” will premiere every Tuesday on the SoulPancake Youtube Channel. You can view the trailer here.

A Baby Was Infected With Coronavirus In The Womb

by Elizabeth Gulino

Some of the most frequently asked questions of the COVID-19 pandemic have been about how the virus affects pregnant people and their children. There has previously been no evidence supporting the idea that coronavirus can pass from mothers to their unborn children, but new research reported on Tuesday out of Paris-Saclay University Hospitals suggests otherwise.

The case study was published in the journal Nature Communications, and suggests that a COVID-19 positive baby, who was born in March in Paris, contracted the virus through the mother’s placenta. Daniele De Luca, MD, chief of the division of pediatrics and neonatal critical care at Paris-Saclay University Hospitals and leader of the research team, told The New York Times that they were able to test the placenta, amniotic fluid, cord blood, and the mother’s and baby’s blood.

Through this testing, they concluded that the virus is able to reach the placenta, replicate there, and infect the fetus. Dr. De Luca says when infected, the fetus will experience symptoms similar to adult COVID-19 patients.

The baby, who is now three months old, was able to recover without treatment and is now “very much improved, almost clinically normal,” Dr. De Luca said. He also added that the mother, who needed oxygen during the delivery, is currently healthy as well.

While infants and newborns have previously tested positive for COVID-19, this is the first research to suggest that babies can be infected while still in the womb — but Jane van Dis, MD, OB/GYN and medical director of Maven, a women and family digital health company, tells USA Today that this case is “exceedingly rare.”

“A lot of babies have been born since this pandemic started,” she said. “The number of babies that have been born to moms with known COVID positive that don’t show any clinical signs or laboratory signs of infection … that number is overwhelming.”

In order for pregnant women and their children to stay safe during the pandemic, they should follow the current CDC guidelines on wearing masks, social distancing, and keeping up with good hygiene.

“Pregnant women should take the same precautions as the general public, and should be particularly aggressive with hand washing,” Sona Malkani GargMD, who practices at Elitra Health, previously told Refinery29. “They should also be careful to avoid contact with sick people.”

Put a Pickle in Your Shitty Beer

by Claire Lower on Skillet, shared by Claire Lower to Lifehacker

a ver si la de bambú se compone un poco, Carlo

Until about five years ago, I was extremely into craft beer, particularly Belgians and anything spontaneously fermented. But somewhere along the line, I developed an allergy (?) or some sort of “condition” that causes me to sneeze every time I drink a beer that is not excessively light in flavor and body. I was upset…

Kitchen appliances that will perfectly assist your chef dreams: Part 4

by Neha Mistry

Kitchen appliances are the backbone of your kitchen. Granted, we all wish to have MasterChef level skills but the reality is while we can cook up a storm, the dishes are the real nightmare! To save you from the massive clean-up that piles up in your kitchen, the designs featured here will be your sous chef, helping you in everything from the food prep to the food storage. Use these appliances to increase your efficiency and speed while practicing to become the next MasterChef!

Ordine by Adriano Design is an innovative cooking solution designed for the modern user. Optimized for small spaces, the design eliminates the need for a bulky traditional stove, clearing the way for more cabinet and counter space. The design features two hob units that are mounted on a central power hub on the wall. Elevated neatly out of the way, the user must simply grab one or both hobs off the wall and set the desired temperature to activate.

choppingboard

TidyBoard was designed to encourage healthy eating and turn it into a sustainable lifestyle change instead of a trend (looking at you, juice cleanse!). It streamlines your prep with strategically placed strainers, catches, and containers on the end of the cutting board so there is more to eat and less to clean. It keeps food and scraps separate and allows you to strain hands-free. When you are done with the chopping and cutting, one swipe of your hand will clear it all. TidyBoard is constructed from bamboo which is antibacterial and durable enough to last for years making the wear and tear worth the effort. Bamboo also makes it lightweight and eco-friendly. “The TidyBoard was mindfully influenced by math and physics. Our board is engineered as a lever to stay steady even with a heavy load in the containers,” says the team.

Designed to be your go-to for any cooking measurements, the Kitchen Cube integrates all measuring vessels into its singular, yellow, cube-shaped body. With over 19+ measuring units designed into its 6-sided shape, the Kitchen Cube can be used to measure anything from teaspoons and tablespoons to even cups, working with both wet and dry ingredients alike. The cube comes with both metric and US measuring units molded into its unique design, allowing you to even measure out your ingredients in milliliters if the recipe calls for it.

Gotta love this twist on the rice cooker! Called the Haier Multipurpose Cooker, it takes the versatility of this popular appliance and multiplies it times 3! Instead of one unit for steaming, it features three cooking hubs with containers of different sizes. Better yet, each container can be removed, taken “to-go” and even washed independently, so you can avoid using plastic or disposable containers.

The Cheat Sheets by Chris Place & Will Matters of Prepd are basically, and this reference couldn’t be more relevant, social distancing containers for your ingredients. You use the same baking tray, but the Cheat Sheets silicone containers sit ON the tray, giving you miniature compartments to cook your food in. Veggies like asparagus that need shorter cook times can be added in the same tray as salmon, which needs more time in the oven. Once you feel like the asparagus is done, just reach in with your baking mitten and pull just the asparagus container out of the oven and let the salmon still cook inside. It’s easy, simple, and here’s the best part – your baking tray never gets dirty!

Gutmann is a global leader in manufacturing high-quality exhaust hoods for households and is trusted by the best of specialized kitchen dealers. The design team combined their superior engineering with their own creative vision to give the users a cleaner experience. To come up with the solution, the team had to understand that performance, cleaning, and changing the filters are the core pillars of creating an efficient product. “With downdraft becoming the new norm, power was questionable. We said it had to step above the current noise. Emphasizing airflow, and creating clarity in the UI were our central points,” said the design team about their goal to create a downdraft hood that had the same (if not better) impact as the ceiling hood.

Supporting you in your eating-clean-habit is the Mizzle, a smart aeroponic kitchen appliance that helps you grow microgreens. This smart cultivator comes with three compartments, one for the germination process, and two for the growth and harvesting process. You can track the progress via an app on the mobile and also get alerts with regards to water levels in the tank. Going the extra mile, the app also helps you with recipes that make you use the microgreens.

Made from heat-resistant and food-safe plastic, the Egguins by Peleg Design is an innovative way to store, boil, or serve eggs. The hollow penguin shape allows you to slide eggs (both small and large) into it, completing it visually and making it look like a flock of Emperor Penguins ready to dash right into the water – the visual metaphor of connecting the egg, the bird, and the water is just perfect! The uniform placement of the eggs also ensures they are cooked evenly, perfect for every new cook. Whoever said cooking cannot be fun.

Not technically a cooking appliance but a must-have for your kitchen, this suspended kitchen lamp by Kikang Kim is an air purifier that keeps the space ventilated and particles controlled without needing to open your window! We all have wanted to open the windows at some point when cooking not because of the smell but because of the particles that will be circulated everywhere otherwise. The ‘Keling’ is a conceptual air purifier combined with a kitchen lamp. The bottom is designed to absorb the fine dust generated while cooking while the top emits purified air. The height is adjustable and replacing the filter is more convenient than cleaning the bulky exhausts. You can also sync it with your smartphone to get control lighting, fine dust, cooking, filter, and wind direction through the mobile app.

Pretend to knock out some blues solos while you’re chopping up your greens (I spent a considerable amount of time on puns) because Etsy seller CuttingBoredom’s created some really cool looking wooden chopping boards inspired by two of rock music’s most iconic guitars, the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul. Available in Cherry, Mahogany, and Walnut, these cutting boards come made to perfection with wooden inlays that make them look just like the real deal. Perfect for classic rock lovers and healthy culinary aficionados. Air-guitar skills not included.

Unlike traditional 4-burner systems, the Cookacross by Zaviè Design Studio features a grid of multiple gas outlets with independent valves that shut on/off instantaneously. The smart system automatically detects the size of the pot or pan placed on the surface and turns on the individual gas outlets beneath it. This not only prevents waste but ensures the evenest heat distribution of any stovetop solution. Of course, users can also pull up the COOKACROSS app on their smartphone and reduce the number or the heating level with a simple swipe or touch.

If these innovative kitchen designs are your thing, check out more of these designs here!

Babies are (usually) cute, and babies are (usually) adorable. But they’re also full of pee and poo, and even the cutest babies aren’t afraid to make you aware of this fact at the most inopportune times. Just got to the studio, with no change of clothes, to take some cute baby pictures? Sounds like the perfect time for some explosive diarrhea to ruin all of your expectations for Pinterest-worthy newborn photos!

Intriguing Images of Eye-Defying Double-Takery

With just a little bit of strange perspective, the human eye can be confuzzled into making you think you're looking at a giant man, an octopus-dog hybrid, or dangerous cliff when you're really just looking at a dude, some puppies and a tree. It's fun to take your brain for a spin and gander at a pile of double-take-causing illusions of warped perspective.

Wildly Offensive English Language T-Shirts Are Apparently All The Rage In Asia

by A B

Is there a valid explanation for why an elderly Asian man who probably speaks no English might want to wear a t-shirt proudly declaring “CAT SHIT EVERY DAY”? Surely, there must be. Let us know in the comments if you have an explanation.
