Samsung and Oculus offer first details on cellphone-powered VR headset, the Gear VR

by Ben Kuchera
Tim.cullings

Could be a game changer, I read some other review that said it didn't have access to the headphone jack though so that seems like a major downside if you wanted to use it on a plane. My friend just stated at Oculus as their Audio director and is trying to get me in to their IT dept so maybe I will know more soon.

The long-rumored collaboration between Oculus and Samsung has now been confirmed by both companies during a recent press event in Berlin Germany.

"Samsung Gear VR delivers an unrivaled viewing experience with the 5.7 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display of Galaxy Note 4 providing stunning and engaging visuals at a mobile-leading resolution," the statement said.

"With the Gear VR Innovator’s Edition, users can sit in the best seat of a theater, can be on-stage of a performance with full 360 3D video, and can enjoy gaming like it’s never been seen before — inside stunning worlds where imagination becomes reality. Samsung’s industry leading Super AMOLED display technology and cutting-edge Oculus-driven technologies fuse to create an...

Chubby Checker sings about Dig Dug on unearthed 1980s cassette

by Samit Sarkar
Tim.cullings

Um wow.

Plenty of video game makers have gone to great lengths to advertise their wares, and back in its early-'80s heyday, Atari went as far as getting Chubby Checker to record a song about Dig Dug, reports The Video Game Preservation Dump.

The track comes from a cassette tape found by Matt Osborne, who put the song on Soundcloud. His father, the late Don Osborne, was the vice president of marketing for Atari's coin-operated games division in the early 1980s, and Matt Osborne wrote in the Atari Museum Facebook group that his father brought the tape home for his children to listen to one day.

"Atari had envisioned a somewhat ['50s-styled] take on the song, inspired, in part, by Chubby Checker's hit 'The Twist,'" he said. As he recalls, Atari...

'Game of Thrones' is a lot less depressing with old-school video game sounds

by Dave Tach
Tim.cullings

Oh this is good, also full of spoilers if you missed last season.

HBO's Game of Thrones isn't exactly uplifting, but a YouTube video from Ozzy Man takes the worst of Westeros and makes it much more fun.

Press play above to watch the transformation from bleak to hilarious. Be warned, though: There are plenty of spoilers here, so if you're not caught up, you'll want to avoid learning whether The Hound is, in fact, willing to die for some chickens.

For more on Game of Thrones in actual video games, check out Polygon's review of Game of Thrones from Cyanide Studios and our coverage of the upcoming episodic Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series from the developer of The Walking Dead. You can also watch a video that gives the same treatment to The Matrix Reloaded.

Brewery Events: WA: Fremont Brewing is raising money for ALS & showcasing their Harvest Ale

by noreply@blogger.com (Northwest Beer Guide)
Tim.cullings

Here is an ALS fundraiser that I can fully support (and already did once this summer)

image of Harvest Ale Release Party courtesy Fremont Brewing Companyimage of ALES for ALS courtesy Fremont Brewing Company

This week, Fremont Brewing has two events which showcase their brewing talents and support of worthy charities.

Starting at 5pm, Fremont's Urban Beer Garden hosts their Harvest Ale Release. On Thursday, August 28th, supporters of local beer will be asked to sample the brewery's Saison isolated or infused with: dandelion & cranberry, huckleberry, chamomile & lemon, cucumber & thyme, or mint with lime & ginger. Plus there will be a brewer on hand to answer questions about the beer or it's 5 other variations.

Then on Saturday, August 30th, the brewery hosts the "Ales for ALS Party". From 11am to 3pm, the brewery - along with several other brewers - will feature all 6 beers brewed for the " ALS Therapy Development Institute". Look for beers from Mt. Tabor Brewing, Triplehorn Brewing, Pike Brewing, Bale Breaker Brewing, Two Beers, and of course Fremont.

image of Fremont's Speaker Series "All About Beer" courtesy Fremont Brewing CompanyLastly the brewery wishes to remind people about their "Speaker Series All About Beer". Held the 1st Sunday of each month, this unique event discusses how beer is made and consumed.

After sourcing some of the best ingredients this side of Bavaria, Fremont calls upon our brewers to mash, boil, and ferment that goodness into the glorious nectar that we are proud to call our own. This fall we asked our brewers to help us explain how we get that final product just right. Learn the process step by step from the folks who make the beer, and enjoy a pint or two along the way.

Fremont Brewing Company's "Urban Beer Garden" is located at 1050 N 34th Street in Seattle's "Fremont" neighborhood.

Fremont Brewing was born of our love for our home and history as well as the desire to prove that beer made with the finest local ingredients – organic when possible --, is not the wave of the future but the doorway to beer's history. Starting a brewery in the midst of the Great Recession is clearly an act of passion. We invite you to come along with us and enjoy that passion -- because beer matters.

The ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) is the world's leading ALS research organization and aims to discover and develop effective treatments and a cure for ALS. Built by and for patients, the Cambridge, MA based drug development institute operates as a 501c3 nonprofit: combining the optimal entrepreneurial practices of a biotechnology and pharmaceutical company with the passion and urgency of a nonprofit mission. For more information, please visit us online at www.als.net.

Loftus Ranches and Hopunion have created Ales for ALS to support a very worthy cause – ALS research. They have offered participating brewers access to a proprietary hop blend, free of charge, in exchange for participation in Ales for ALS™. While we would like to work with every brewer in the United States (that would really raise a lot of research funding!) we are limited by the hop blend supply. Participating brewers receive an invitation from Loftus Ranches and Hopunion. Each will brew special beers with these hops and will donate a portion of the sales to ALS TDI, the world's leader in ALS research.

The Greatest Simpsons Celebrity Cameos of the Past 25 Years

by Kat George

Pretty decent list.

Tony Bennett The Simpsons

After 25 years of The Simpsons, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who can’t recount at least one joke from the long-running animated series. From Homer’s “Doh” to Bart’s “eat my shorts,” it’s a show stuffed with more iconic moments than anything else. Some of the best, of course, are courtesy of celebrity cameos.

Whether it’s classic stars like Leonard Nimoy or newer sensations like LeBron James, The Simpsons only invites the best talent to join its hallowed ranks. It’s seen Tom Jones performing at gun point, Luke Perry as a sideshow act, Star Wars‘ own Mark Hamill being rescued by Homer himself, and Xena: Warrior Princess aka Lucy Lawless flying through the air. There’s serious actors being silly, talk show hosts like Conan O’Brien getting meta, and legendary musicians — yes, ‘N Sync counts — passing through the tiny town of Springfield. In celebration of The Simpsons‘ 25th anniversary, and FXX marathoning the entire series over the next 12 days, we’re taking a look at the greatest, most memorable celebrity cameos. Let us know your favorites, in the comments.

They have a brewery in CP now? Anyone been there yet?

Sponsored Press Release

SHMALTZ BREWING CO. RELEASES AWARD-WINNING HOP MANNA IPA®
IN NEW 12 OZ FOUR PACKS

YOU'VE TRIED THE REST... NOW TRY OURS TOO.
Dry Hopped with Centennial, Cascade & Citra, 6.8% Alc., 65 IBUs

Now brewing exclusively in Clifton Park, NY -- Thursday, August 21, 2014 – On September 1, 2014, Shmaltz Brewing Company will release Hop Manna IPA® nationwide in new 12oz 4-packs and will be available throughout our distribution footprint with a suggested retail price of $9.99 per 4-pack. Until now, the World Beer Championship Gold Medal Winner was only available on draft and in 22oz bottles. The 12oz packaging will now be available year-round due to overwhelming demand by hopheads to include Hop Manna IPA® in their regular rotation of favorite IPAs. India Pale Ale's now make up approximately 20% of craft beer production, and there's little indication that this style is slowing down anytime soon. The IPA craze coincides with a great sense of exploration with beer aficionados tasting as many different hop forward brews as they can find while discovering the best-of-the-best. You've tried the rest...now you have four new reasons to pick up a brand new Hop Manna® 4-pack and ascend into hop heaven with this 6.8% ABV, 65 IBUs dry hopped sensation.

A delicious IPA bearing floral and citrus flavors, Hop Manna IPA® features six robust hops (Warrior, Cascade, Citra, Amarillo, Crystal, Centennial), it's dry hopped with Centennial, Cascade and Citra hops and is balanced out with five delicious malts (Specialty 2-Row, Wheat, Munich, Vienna, CaraMunich 40). Not a San Diego IPA (enticing as they are) and not trying to re-create the excellent standouts from friends such as Dogfish, Founders, Lagunitas, Three Floyds and so many others, Hop Manna IPA® aims to create a unique story of its own.

Critics have offered overwhelming praise for Hop Manna IPA's® singular profile. All About Beer's "Beer Talk" judge Roger Protz notes, "Manna from heaven, indeed! The hop regime is amazing. It has a lush pale bronze color and a hop aroma that is literally stunning." DRAFT Magazine adds, "...its malt presence is sublime." Esquire.com included Hop Manna® as one of "The Best Beers of 2012."

Shmaltz is no stranger to hopped-up specialty beers. In celebration of their 10th Anniversary (2006), HE'BREW Beer® introduced its award-winning rye-based double IPA, Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A.®. The standout robust brew has become a year-round staple in the HE'BREW Beer® line-up; it's garnered a "99 Rating" by the Beer Advocate Bros, a "98 Rating" on Ratebeer.com, and it took home a Gold Medal at the World Beer Championships. Mazel Hops! Double IPA®, brewed for the first time in 2014 for the Beer of the Month Club's 20th anniversary, will make another much anticipated appearance in 2015. Beer of the Month Club tasting notes say, "We found the aroma intoxicating, as luscious, fruity hops practically jump out of the glass...On the palate -- it's a hop explosion."

HE'BREW Beer's® first-ever single IPA, Hop Manna® is crafted to provide session after session of hop nourishment from the Shmaltz Tribe to yours -- a true gift from the Craft Beer Promised Land.

About Shmaltz Brewing Company
Ranked in 2013 as one of the "Top 100 Brewers in the World" by RateBeer.com, Shmaltz won 9 Gold and 5 Silver Medals in the World Beer Championships in 2012. A recipient of the "Distinguished Business Award" by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Shmaltz was also included in the "Top 50 Fastest Growing Bay Area Companies" by San Francisco Business Times.

Founder and owner Jeremy Cowan established the company in San Francisco in 1996 with the first 100 cases of He'brew Beer® hand bottled and delivered throughout the Bay Area in his Grandmother’s Volvo. He'brew® now sells across 37 states, through 40 wholesalers and nearly 5,000 retailers. In 2007, Shmaltz released a new line of craft brewed lagers under the Coney Island® banner. The Coney Island brand was recently acquired by Alchemy and Science, a craft beer incubator, owned by Boston Beer (Sam Adams).

After 17 years of being an outspoken cheerleader for contract brewing, Shmaltz recently broke with tradition and opened its own New York State production brewery in Clifton Park, NY, 10 minutes north of Albany's capital district. Shmaltz's new home boasts a 50-barrel brewhouse with 20,000 barrels of annual capacity. The new brewery packages 12 and 22 ounce bottles and kegs of their diverse core and seasonal favorites, and hosts fans and beer tourists in their new tasting room for tours, barrel-aged previews, and special releases.

In 2010/11, Cowan published his small business memoir, Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah: How It Took 13 Years, Extreme Jewish Brewing, and Circus Sideshow Freaks to Make Shmaltz Brewing Company an International Success. A free sampling of Chapter One and suggested beer pairings, can be viewed at www.craftbeerbarmitzvah.com. In 2012, Cowan spearheaded the creation of the non-profit New York City Brewers Guild (which manages NYC Beer Week) and served as its Founding President.

Cowan also has presented at the 2013 Craft Brewers Conference, as well as previous Great American Beer Festivals, BevNet's Brewbound conference, Beer Advocate's Extreme Beer Festival, the Atlanta and the St. Louis Jewish Book Fairs, and the San Francisco and New York Jewish Museums.

Shmaltz Brewing beers have appeared in such distinguished media outlets as The New York Times, CNN Headline News, Beer Advocate Magazine, NPR's "Weekend Edition," Fox Business News, Men's Health, San Francisco Chronicle, The Jerusalem Report, New York Jewish Week, and Washington Post.

From the label of
Hop Manna®
In the book of Exodus, the ancient Hebrews survived 400 years of bondage before the ultimate supreme court dropped the 10 deadly Plagues on the land of the taskmasters and the head dictator, Pharaoh. Even then, only begrudgingly, did he Let My People Go. The freedom ride across, nay through the sea left a band of wandering nomads broke and suffering, no doubt with a profound hunger -- and a mighty thirst. Enter the Manna: a glorious gift to nourish body and soul. Manna was said to combine the tastes of everything most delicious to each individual, depending on their desire. And as the Good Book says, Each shall gather according to one's need and shall enjoy a double portion for thine chosen day of rest. Manna fed the entire tribe, but tradition suggests the righteous received manna ground in a heavenly mill, while the wicked had to grind it below for themselves. Hear o' Tribe of Shmaltz -- Behold: A celebration of the flower of the craft beer revolution! A golden opportunity to feed your inner hop head and rejoice in HOP MANNA, our newest delicacy of the modern He'brew Beer family. L'Chaim!

The Anatomy of Movies

by John Farrier
Tim.cullings

Another great chart.

(Wrong Hands/John Atkinson)

Cartoonist John Atkinson, who recently diagrammed the anatomical structure of popular musical genres, now brings that same keen analysis to film.

He reveals that movies are terribly formulaic. It would be nice to mix them up a bit. Let's have action films that end with ukulele covers of The Cure songs, explosions in romantic comedies, and weird rural people in sci-fi movies.

Super Terrific Japanese Thing: Pizza Hut Run by Cats

Tim.cullings

FTLOG click through for the videos.

Japan's on the same page as the U.S. when it comes to cats - they get that kitties in little clothes will get Internet attention, and fast. But I'm not sure they're quite on the same page as we are when it comes to branding. In the latest move by Pizza Hut Japan, marketing is focusing on a "Pizza Cat" restaurant (alas, it doesn't really exist) wherein the feline employees will ignore your calls, fail to deliver your pizza, and screw up the company's finances by sitting on keyboards and cash registers. It's like they're saying that if your service is bad, blame it on the cute cats. If Kevin Smith really wanted to make another movie about surly clerks, this one should have been it. Check out a sampling of the shorts below... Continue reading "Super Terrific Japanese Thing: Pizza Hut Run by Cats" >

A Perfect Viking Memorial for GWAR Frontman

by GREGR

Seems appropriate, RIP.

Earlier this year, the world of ridiculousness and metal lost GWAR frontman Dave Brockie to drugs. He was given a proper American-style funeral for friends and family in April, but his bandmates waited to share a public memorial with fans until... In true over the top, GWAR style, Oderus Urungus (Brockie's incredible stage name) was memorialized when his awesomely grotesque costume was set afloat mid-que, and shot with a flaming arrow from shore - a proper Viking funeral. It's awesome:

Enemy Starfighter's new trailer is frakking intense

by Charlie Hall
Tim.cullings

Cannot wait to see what they have done since last PAX, they had a super early version there and it blew me away. Hopefully I get a break to go check it out, I'm going to be working at the Nova-111 booth this year.

The return of the flight sim genre keeps rolling along with the announcement that Enemy Starfighter will be playable at this year's PAX Prime.

In Enemy Starfighter the player takes the role of the pilot of an elite fighter craft and the leader of a larger reconnaissance task force. The goal is to jump into systems, perform surgical strikes to cripple their defences, and pave the way for a larger invasion force. No release date has yet been set.

Enemy Starfighter is a game in production by Marauder Interactive, a small studio led by Mike Tipul. Tipul is a veteran of Pandemic Studios (Full Spectrum Warrior 2, The Saboteur) and Bungie, where he was responsible for the space combat mission in Halo Reach.

The PAX build will feature full...

Fish Brewing Introduces The Hobbit Series of Beers

by Kaiser
Tim.cullings

Sweet! Can't wait to try these.

Three beers made to commemorate the release of the upcoming Hobbit Movie, The Battle of the Five Armies, are on the way from a local NW brewery. Fish Brewing, located in Olympia, WA, has teamed up with BevLink, Ocean Brands, Warner Bros Entertainment and New Line Productions to create a series of beers “selectively tailored to emulate the Hobbit characters.”

The releases include Gollum Precious Pils, Smaug Stout and Bolg Belgian Style Tripel. The beers started shipping to retailers this week, so you should be able to find them soon. Following are the beer descriptions and labels.

gollum2Gollum Precious Pils: A strong Imperial Pils, with flavors as smooth and crafty as Gollum himself. Like the ring which Gollum pursued for the rest of his life, his “precious” pils, if your quest leads you to it, could extend your life too! (at least we’d like to think so) It will, at a minimum, make your journey a little more enjoyable!

smaug2Smaug Stout: Smaug Stout is styled after a classic Russian Imperial Stout, but with a subtle hint of Habanero chilis to remind you of the fire and danger awaiting you in your journey to The Lonely Mountain. Pronounced notes of Coffee and Chocolate balanced with Northwest Hops and a touch of heat produce an exceptional imperial stout, a worthy reward for your hard-fought journey.

-bolg-belgian style tripel aleBolg Belgian Style Tripel: An Orc chieftain who ruled for 150 years, Bolg would drink his grog of choice and no one would tell him otherwise – a flavorful strong Belgian Tripel. Some said it refined an otherwise gruesome character.
