Why you're losing the battle for high-quality software

Every day you go to work and you have to fight. Your boss wants to deliver features as fast as possible, and so you have to either argue for best practice, or work extra hours to do things the right way.

You need to fight for readable and maintainable code. And you need to fight for reusable code. And you need to fight for tests.

And you fight and you fight and you fight, and you keep on losing.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Software development doesn’t have to be a fight. Strange as it may seem, in this game the only winning move is not to play.

Instead of playing “Let’s Write High-Quality Software”, there’s a different and better game you can play: “Let’s Solve The Problem”.

Avoid false dichotomies

The problem with the game of High-Quality Software is that it’s based on a dichotomy, with only two options: low-quality and high-quality. I started this article with another dichotomy: arguing with your boss vs. working longer. And a lot of technical discussions quickly devolves into dichotomies, e.g.:

  • Shipping features vs. fixing technical debt.
  • Testing your code vs. coding quickly.

Dichotomies are tempting, and perhaps even built-in to the way we understand the world: there’s a left hand and a right hand, a wrong way and a right way. But there’s nothing inherently superior in just having two choices. In fact, all it’s doing is making you a worse engineer, because you’re focusing on arguing instead of focusing on solving the problem.

To combat this tendency, Gerald Weinberg suggests the Rule of Three: always consider at least three solutions to any problem. Let’s start with our first dichotomy: arguing with your boss vs. working longer hours to do things the right way. If there’s a third choice, what might it be?

Stop arguing, start listening

When your boss or colleagues argue for a specific design, instead of telling them why they’re wrong, listen to their reasons. Behind every design proposal is a set of goals, motivations, presumed constraints: those are the things you need to address. If you criticize their proposal based on goals they don’t care about, you’re not going to get anywhere.

So first, listen.

Once you understand why they want what they want:

  1. Consider more than the initial two choices, their proposal and your initial reaction.
  2. Try to find a solution that addresses both your goals.
  3. Explain you thinking in ways that are relevant to their goals, not just yours.

Example scenario: testing

Your boss proposes writing code without unit tests. Why? Because they want customers to be happy. Since customers have been complaining about how long it takes for new features to be delivered, your boss believes this is one way to speed up delivery.

You want to write unit tests. Why? You want code to be maintainable over time.

Merely arguing for unit tests isn’t going to address your boss’ concerns. But if you look past the initial false dichotomy, there are other solutions to consider. For example:

  • Investigate why customers aren’t getting features quickly. Perhaps the bottleneck isn’t due to how fast you’re coding, but elsewhere in the delivery process (you don’t do frequent releases, customers need to upgrade manually… there could be many reasons). Fix that, and you will have time to write unit tests and ship quickly.
  • Figure out places where bugs would be costly to customers, explain those costs to your boss, and propose unit testing only that part of the code.
  • Investigate customer needs in more detail. Perhaps existing customers are complaining about feature delivery, but you’re also losing many customers due to bugs.
  • Suggest using tools that will speed up test writing enough that the additional time won’t bother your boss.
  • Suggest limiting unit test writing to a predetermined amount of time: “this will only add 4 hours to a one week project”.

No doubt there are many more potential solutions to the standoff.

There’s always another solution

There is almost never a single correct solution to any problem, nor a single best solution. You can solve problems by relaxing unnecessary constraints, by focusing on different levels of the situation (organization, process, code), by redefining the problem, and more. Worst comes to worst, you can address many problems by switching jobs; different people like different environments, after all.

So don’t try to win technical arguments, and in fact, don’t treat them as arguments at all. When you disagree with someone, take the time to listen, and then try to come up with a solution that address their concerns and yours. And if your first idea doesn’t do that… it’s time to come up with a third, and fourth, and fifth solution.

Marketing Human

I’ve got some career-change news that might sound weird at first but that I promise will make sense in a minute: I’m quite happily still at Omni, but I’m switching from engineering over to marketing.

I am the new Marketing Human, a new member of the Design department.

If you think of me as an engineer, you’re not wrong — but the secret, hidden in plain sight, is that throughout my career I’ve done a whole bunch of design and things that could be called marketing.

Blogging could be called marketing, after all, and today I wrote my first post for the Omni blog.

(For whatever freakish reason, writing has never been a chore to me — I love it. Sometimes I think I only make apps just to have something to write about.)

But the new job isn’t just blogging — I’m also doing a podcast. I’ll help figure out the marketing points behind the release of OmniFocus 3. I’ll write some ads. I’ll create new websites. I don’t even know what all the different things are yet.

I’ll also help with defining future versions of our apps, which is super-exciting for me. This keeps me close to the process of app-making — at a different level, sure, but at a place where I’m quite happy, since I’ve done this kind of work with Frontier, NetNewsWire, MarsEdit, Glassboard, Vesper, and now with Evergreen and back to Frontier.

In other words, I’m using the skills I’ve learned as an indie and sort-of-indie over decades — just not the skills I write about here that often.

For now, until OmniFocus 3 ships, I’m splitting my time: doing this and continuing to work directly on the Mac app. After that I’ll be a full-time Marketing Human.

The West End Syndrome

Here are some practical, on-the-ground thoughts.

Yesterday, we dusted off the Toyota for a trip to White Rock on family business.  It wouldn’t start.  Dead as a doornail.  Called BCAA, who arrived within 15 minutes.

Dead battery. No surprise.  But now comes the surprise.

“How often do you drive it ?”, asks the BCAA tech.

“Not much”, I say, “About 1,000 km a year.”

“OK, your battery died from low usage”, he says, “They self-discharge, and when they get low, this can alter battery chemistry too”.

“We see lots of this in the West End.  There’s so much within walking distance, and so many choices to get around.  Walk, transit, bike — car usage drops and dead batteries are common”.  “We’re seeing more of it all over Vancouver, too”, chimes in the BCAA tech’s co-worker.

“What you can do is this:  drive it 30-45 minutes a week, or put in a trickle-charger, or else dump it and join a car-share program.”  We chat for a few minutes.

Maybe the talk was a slick promo for BCAA’s EVO (I doubt it), but the techs had both clearly researched Car2Go as well.  They knew the ins and outs.

While we chatted, the BCAA techs checked the battery carefully and started the car with their booster; we idled it for 45 minutes, then made it out to White Rock and back without incident.

I think its’ time for us to consider a move away from car ownership and towards something else.  All because of the “West End Syndrome”.  All the transportation choices we use have reduced car dependency to the point that it’s detrimental to the car’s operation. Who knew?

Anyone interested in a Toyota Yaris? Very low mileage.

Design report #4: symbiotic applications

Purism’s long-term goal has always been to make computers that are as convenient as they are respectful to the people that use them. The Librem products are an ethical platform and therefore should not be discriminating anyone; instead, they are meant to be inclusive of all human beings. In other words, everyone should find in their Librem a convenient and secure platform for their daily usage, and therefore accessibility should also be an important part of our ethical design roadmap.

We are aware that the road is long and that the Librem 5 is a challenging project, so we need some design foundations that favor convenience as much as it can lighten the development effort to get there.

Apps on existing platforms compete for your attention

With today’s smartphones, you usually get a minimal set of functionalities out of the box and go through installing diverse applications for your different needs. Usually those applications are proprietary and are designed around their own unethical business model; hence they compete against each other for your attention and have their own set of features to be used within the scope of the application only.

This can lead to a lot of redundancy and confusion in terms of functionality. A particularly blatant case is communication applications, where we see each application handling their own contacts logic, their own locked down and isolated protocol, and where a ton of applications will implement the same things for the same purpose (making calls and sending messages), with the focus typically being the flashiest application to attract and retain the most users. Let’s illustrate how ridiculous this is, conceptually:

Envisioning a harmonious app ecosystem

In the real, natural world, sustainable ecosystems are made of biological entities interacting together in harmony or symbiosis. This is what makes life possible over the long term.

The digital world of Free/Libre & open-source software, particularly in operating systems, is highly similar to the natural ecosystem. In this world, there is no such thing as isolating off or protecting a technology if you want to be part of the system. Business models and interests are completely different from the world of proprietary software. Best practices favor reuse and integration, improving user experience, reducing technical debt, increasing software quality and lowering development costs, with a “collaborative” system where different applications from different authors are made to work together.

The Purpose is the Feature

The idea behind the PureOS design guidelines is to replace the concept of standalone, independent and feature-competing applications with a concept of small, single-purpose, cross-integrated applications—that would interact between each other to provide a unified experience across the device (and beyond). Those small applications can be seen as “features” of the system. 1 purpose = 1 feature.

Therefore, the Human Interface Guidelines’ main principles regarding “features” development would be :

  • Don’t see applications as independent programs but as “features” that have a single purpose and that interact with each other.
  • One “feature” application is guarantor of the security of the data flow going through it. Only make your “feature” application share data with “trusted” features or networks and in a secure way.
  • Make a “feature” application focused on one single purpose (an email client is not an address book nor a calendar)
  • Make your “feature” application rely on existing features (an email client should rely on the existing address book and the existing calendar “features”)
  • Avoid redundancy. Don’t try to reinvent existing applications. Improve them instead.
  • Setup your “feature” application by default. Make it work out of the box.

Advantages

On the user’s side, the features of the device are easy to spot as they are made available through single-purpose applications displaying an obvious name. For example, the “Call” application is made to make calls, no matter the technology used behind that (e.g. Matrix, phone, voip). The “Messaging” application is used to send instant messages, no matter the technology used behind that (e.g. Matrix, SMS, XMPP). The “Contacts” application is used to manipulate and store the contacts information to be used by the “Call” and “Messaging” applications.

On the developer’s side, applications are as simple as they can be, the use cases are limited, all the logic that is not related to the main purpose of the application is delegated to other programs, which makes the application easier to design, implement and maintain.

Data belongs to the user, not the application

In this collaborative application system, where applications can interact with each other in harmony, data is not limited to the application’s logic anymore. Applications are acting as services, or “data providers”, to each other. Data can flow from one application to the other, from one device to another, from one network to another.

This concept implies the separation between data and functionality where the data belongs to the user only. The application that manipulates it is guarantor of its integrity and security.


Please note: these are guidelines, representing an overall vision. Guidelines are there simply as a way to guide application design, and to suggest best practices for application developers in general. Given that a GNU+Linux distribution like PureOS is an open platform where thousands of applications are available independently (as long as they are freedom-respecting!), you are not obligated to conform to these design guidelines to be able to distribute your application through Debian and PureOS. Furthermore, these design plans represent a broad long-term plan, not necessarily a guarantee of what will be happening “immediately” in the first released version of the platform that ships, your mileage may vary, etc.

Apple HomePod vs Sonos :: Ein Erfahrungsbericht

Dank Deiner Empfehlungen bin ich auch schon lange Sonos-Nutzer und Kunde bei Thomas Lang. Als solcher wollte ich Dir nur ganz kurz die Erfahrung schildern, die ich mit dem HomePod gemacht habe:

Wegen der „raving reviews“ rund um den Verkaufsstart hatte ich mir viel vom HomePod versprochen. Ich habe sowieso eine Apple Music-Subscription und die Unzulänglichkeiten von Siri waren mir ziemlich egal. Also auf einer Dienstreise nach London gleich in der ersten Woche den HomePod gekauft.

Schon nach 2 Tagen im Direktvergleich mit 2 Sonos Play:1 stand fest, dass der HomePod zurückgeht. Wie inzwischen schon vielfach geschrieben wurde, hat der HomePod einen ordentlichen Bass und die meisten Beats 1-Shows hören sich entsprechend gut an. Aber ansonsten klingt eigentlich nichts wirklich gut und definitiv schlechter als zwei Play:1s oder sogar nur ein vernünftig mit TruePlay getunter Play:1.

Als wirklich überzeugter Apple-Kunde mit sporadischen Einblicken in Apple-Projekte durch Bekannte, die in Cupertino arbeiten, bin ich tatsächlich völlig enttäuscht von diesem Produkt, das trotz verspätetem Launch noch lange nicht fertig ist. Am Ende haben sowohl der HomePod und die Play:1s das Haus verlassen und es sind 2 Ones eingezogen, weil ich durch Siri plötzlich doch Appetit auf Sprachsteuerung bekommen hatte.

Ich habe selbst noch keine Erfahrung, bin aber natürlich interessiert. Dauerhaft durchsetzen könnten sich die HomePods bei mir nicht. Sonos kann einfach viel mehr, auf was ich nicht verzichten will. Spotify, TuneIn Radio, Mixcloud, Soundcloud, 5+1 Surround Sound.

Die HomePods werden besser werden. So wie es die Sonos Player auch wurden. Und sie haben das Thema Klang wiederbelebt. Die Echos sind mir einfach zu schrottig.

Warum man so oft von Surface Pro liest

Letztens hat mich ein Kommentator gefragt, warum ich so oft über Surface Pro schreibe. Die Antwort ist ganz einfach: Das ist der Computer, den ich am meisten benutze. Er ersetzt mir MacBook Pro und iPad Pro in einem Gerät. Ich kann damit sehr gut schreiben, mit Tastatur oder mit Stift. Das Surface Pro hat einen wunderbaren Bildschirm, ist leicht und klein, und es fasst sich gut an.

Was vielen gar nicht klar ist: Surface Pro ist billiger als ein völlig veraltetes MacBook Air, hat die vierfache Bildschirmauflösung, ist viel leichter und dünner. Selbst das viel teurere MacBook Pro kommt da nicht ran. Größe und Gewicht sind ohne (mit) Type Cover angegeben, das MacBook Air ist an der dicksten Stelle gemessen. Der Bildschirm des Surface Pro ist etwas kleiner (12.5 statt 13.3"), aber der Unterschied macht bei mir in der Praxis nichts aus.

Sketch

Die Preise in dieser Tabelle sind beim Hersteller Microsoft und Apple abgeschrieben. Surface gibt es in der Regel deutlich günstiger und mit Type-Cover. Apple hat etwas stabilere Preise. Mein Surface Pro hat doppelt so viel Wupp wie hier angegeben: i7 Kaby Lake, 16 GB Memory, 512 GB Speicher. Ein MacBook Pro dieser Ausstattung kostet 2850 €.

Back in 2010 EA released a hockey game for the Nintendo Wii that featured an actual hockey stick as a controller. It was the greatest thing ever, and I spent hours - days! - standing in the dining room developing my career from Peewee to Pro. They didn't support it the following year and I lost interest. But it was a glimpse into the future, which may soon arrive with these Microsoft controllers. Because it's the U.S. they're really focused on guns, but the haptic musical instruments and the cane begin to show the true potential of modern interfaces, especially when combined with virtual reality. Maybe one day I'll be able to play haptic hockey again.

Building a Blockchain

We've all heard about blockchains, but what are they? It can be a complicated concept. The best way to learn, of course, is to roll up your sleeves and build a blockchain engine. That's what I did.

I followed the example from Daniel van Flymen called Learn Blockchains by Building One on HackerNoon. Now I'm not going to do what he did in this article; if you want to follow the code line by line, go there.

What I'm going to describe here is what I learned. If you read it you won't know blockchains. But if I'm sufficiently clear you should come away knowing something.

Current Transactions

A transaction is exactly what you think it is. "John pays Fred five dollars." The blockchain I created kept transactions very simply, but you could imagine how they can be more complex. "University of Downes awards Fred McGuire a Logic badge." Or anything.

Our blockchain engine keeps a list of current transactions. Each item in the list is a separate transaction. It's nothing fancier than that.

Block

Once our list of current transactions gets long enough (however you want to define that) we gather them together into a block. A block is, then, a list of transactions.

We also add some other properties to the block so we can keep track of it. We give the block an index number. We give it a timestamp depending on then it was created. When we put our transactions into a block, we'll have a record of them.

We could just keep a list of blocks. But then anyone could change the previous transactions. So we want to prevent people from changing earlier transactions by locking them into our block, and we want to create a chain of transactions so that new transactions are only added to the end of the chain.

Starting

We create an empty block as a starting point. We give it an index number of zero and a value we'll call a 'proof of work' of 1 (this number doesn't matter; it could be anything) and a 'previous hash' of 100 (again, the number doesn't matter). We give it a timestamp and an empty list of transactions.

Mining

Next, I want to create some transactions and store them in a new block. It will be the second block in our chain. By creating the second block, I will lock in all the changes in the first block so nobody can change it.

So here's how it works: I get the previous block, and I get the value for the 'proof of work' from the previous block. Then, using the last proof, I create a new proof of work for this block. I will create it by taking the old proof of work and solving a cryptographic puzzle for it. This is called 'mining'.

In my blockchain the puzzle is very simple. I take the old proof of work and attach a new value to the end of it. I start with '0'. So if the old proof of work was '1' then I create a string '10'. Then I encrypt my string, which produces a long output string, like this: b5ua881ui4pzws3O03/p9ZIm4n0=

The puzzle I'm trying to solve is this: find a new proof of work so that encrypting the string produces an output string that begins with '0000'. My very simple system keeps trying numbers until it gets the answer. If '0' didn't work, try '1'. If '1' didn't work, try '2'. And so on. In my system, the new proof of work was something like 726,095.

That's a lot of computing. I had to create 726,095 different encryptions until I found the right one. In real blockchains, the challenge might be even more difficult. That's why it takes so much power to mine bitcoins. They're solving problems like this to create proofs of work.

Hashing

Once I've obtained my new proof of work, I can create my new block. I give the block an index number. I give it a timestamp depending on then it was created. I put the list of transactions into it. Then I add the proof of work to it.

Finally, I want to link it to the previous block. I do this by creating a 'hash' of the previous block. I do this by encrypting the block using the same sort of encryption I used to create the proof of work. The encryption produces a long string, just like before, say,

This long string is called a 'hash'. It's a one-way encryption; I can generate a hash out of my content, but I can't generate my content out of my hash. The hash is also unique to my content. If you changed one digit of my content, you'd change the hash. So that locks the previous content. I take this string, call it the 'previous hash', and add it to my block.

My block is done. But the story isn't over.

Validating

Although it's very hard to create a new block, it's very easy to prove that the new block is valid.

First we check the proof of work. It's very easy to check because we know what it is. We create the string, encrypt the string, and check to make sure it starts with '0000'.

Then we check the hash. We do this by encrypting the previous block and checking our result against the one in the block. If they match, the has is valid.

If the block passes both tests, it's valid.

Nodes

If I were building a one-server system, I'd be done. But the list of transactions needs to be shared with other people. Also, we want other people to be able to create their own transactions.

To share my blockchain, I create a service so that anyone who requests it can receive the full structure of the blockchain from me. It will contain one or more blocks, where each block has a list of transaction, and where each block is chained to the previous block by means of the proof of work and the hash of the previous block.

Now I need a list of other servers. They will each have the same blockchain engine I have. They will set up the same way I did. And when they're ready they send a command to my system to 'register' as a blockchain engine. In my system, I keep a list of these nodes (if I wanted, I could also share it).

Notice that there's no centralized list of nodes. We don't need it. Each node (including me) keeps its own list of nodes.

We also each have our own blockchain. So which one is the right one?

Resolving Conflicts

There are different ways of resolving conflicts. We chose a very simple one: compare two blockchains. Whichever blockchain is the longest is the official blockchain.

So when I want to make sure I have the most up-to-date blockchain, therefore, I check the chain at each node, one by one. If the chain is longer at the node, I replace my blockchain with the one I found at the node. I keep going until I've finished nodes.

If everybody does this, we arrive at a consensus. This consensus reflects the history of all the transactions in the system - the exchanges of money, the recording of contracts, whatever.

Coins

In a financial system like Bitcoin, all transactions are executed in 'coins'. Where do the coins come from? They are created as a reward for mining. In our system, for each block you mine, you receive one coin.

We can also exchange coins (and record these as transactions) for anything we want. So I could sell my coins, I could trade my coins for goods or services, whatever. This depends only on the willingness of someone else to accept my coins.

What makes my coins valuable is that they're scarce. They can only be obtained by mining, and mining gets harder and harder as the blocks get bigger (it can also be made harder by design, which is what Bitcoin did). So instead of setting up a computer and mining your own coins, you might find it easier to buy one from me.

But note that we don't have to use coins. We could simply agree to use this as a distributed record-keeping system. But we'd also have to agree to pay our fair share of the costs of keeping it running.

Complexity

As I mentioned, this is a simple blockchain system. We could make it a lot more complex in a variety of ways.

For one thing, we need to make sure we don't release our current transactions too early. We need to make sure they're locked into the blockchain somewhere, even if someone else's blockchain was longer and took precedence. One way to do this is to notify other nodes of the transactions as they occur. In some blockchains they wait until the transactions are ten blocks deep into the system before releasing their local copies of current transactions. 

Another thing we need to do is to create identities for the people conducting the transactions. So a node might have a list of accounts, such that these accounts are listed as the ones conducting the transaction. I might have an identity like @downes@downes.blockchain or some such thing.

I might also want to check to be sure whether a person is entitled to make a transaction before entering it into my system. If, for example, @downes@downes.blockchain wants to transfer 1,000 coins to someone, there needs to be a history of transactions for  @downes@downes.blockchain such that he has more than 1,000 coins to transfer.

In the case of other types of transactions, other types of checks would need to be made. Only accredited institutions should grant degrees, for example. Only reputable agencies should grant badges. How is this accomplished? Ideally, it is built into the system, so that participation in a biven blockchain network constitutes agreement regarding the constraints on transactions.

The nature of the encryption challenge in the mining process could also be changed. The main condition is that it should be hard to solve but easy to check, and any number of one-way functions and algorithms fit the bill. There needs, however, to be a balance between how hard it is to solve and how quickly we can create new blocks.

Also, to arrive at a consensus, I could check every other node, but why would I want to? If I know that Frank checks all the other nodes, I could just check with Frank. In a network we can propagate from end to end by checking only a few nodes, provided we do it right.

Event Horizon

The face that launched a thousand spaceships was the face of the earth. The 1969 televised image of Earth as seen from Apollo 11 was a solidifying moment of national theater as Americans with television sets gathered around to confront and experience the possibilities of their country’s expansion. More than the lunar footprint, the eye of memory looks back toward a vision of Earth. From that first image on, the delicately suspended globe was supposed to be a lasting revelation — the “pale blue dot” that Carl Sagan described in the images of Earth taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1990.

Sagan referred to Earth as such to illuminate the minor position of humans in the universe, to belittle the reckless folly of anything humans deign to call achievement or advancement. There is an unnoted irony in that the scientists who gather at the Carl Sagan Center, home to the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI), claim to be “conducting the most profound search in human history.” What Sagan spoke of could suggest a reordering of human hubris into a way to live as a species oriented toward mutually sustaining vulnerable life. The SETI Institute, in line with most contemporary interests in outer space, has chosen instead grand proclamations of discovery for the future of all-too-human humanity.

The fragile, quivering mass of Earth is not in such concentrated focus as it was when those images from space first came to us. Cosmic scenes that captivate and circulate online are high-definition, high-quality images of very, very far away, usually made available directly from NASA. On Twitter, you could follow the last moments of the great content creator Cassini, which sent back pics from its journey to the outer limits and then was thrown onto the surface of Saturn. One of my favorite accounts sends out close-up images of Martian textures, @BitsofMars. But on other accounts, in other stories, we see half the earth burning, another part drowning. When we avert our gaze to outer space, it is all color-corrected wonder, blissfully bereft of context or history.

As global disaster spreads and becomes more widely visible, missions to take humans to space become more prevalent, more appealing. Every time an exoplanet with a certain biological signature is noted, there’s a brief spike in press rekindling the idea that people might be able to start anew somewhere else. How many times a year do we see and perhaps circulate a story of some newly discovered Earth-like exoplanet?

It’s not just the drive of wonder. It’s the panic. The panic of sitting on a world on fire, yes, but also the panic to make a profit. This is speculation; there is a return. There’s always a newer world waiting.


In 1893, Frederick Turner announced the frontier of the American West closed. This suture in the flow of national expansion would be an originary wound for American democracy in its rugged rite of passage. Turner of course was wrong, as many historians have contended for decades. The frontier never closes. Not in California, not in the 19th century. If it isn’t the West, it’s the moon, then cyberspace, then Mars. The frontiers do not close but rather lap over each other like waves where people and capital crash and flow.

It seems cliché that the tech and space industries would be located primarily in the West. Silicon Valley could only ever have been in California, just as Spaceport America seemed manifestly destined for location outside the town Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. These Western territories have been continuously opened up for further privatization and expansion in world-warping acts of violence made invisible by the making of a supposedly better new world. It is not only that capitalism and colonialism need new spaces to expropriate; these processes also always require a future on which to speculate. At the precipice of one receding frontier, they find another one to ride.

The word pioneer, usually attached to innovation, is never too far from people like Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk or Peter Thiel. These men’s careers in tech startups, their origins in the digital commerce boom, and their pioneer identities were forged on the electronic frontier. Like pioneers of industry in the colonial expansion of the Americas, these men operate on the knife’s edge of sovereignty as it cuts a path for both state and capital to consolidate power. In space, these men see a chance to loosen further the bonds that still restrain the endless capital they’ve been chasing in their imagined rocket ships. Investors, architects of the financial and material future, have taken to using the term “NewSpace” to refer to the almost accessible ventures of asteroid mining, space shipping, spaceship travel, and other forms of space commerce.

Still, there are minor contractual obstacles. Even at the void’s edge, there is a treaty. A couple of treaties actually. Out there the governments still rely on these dusty remnants of the dying beast of nation-state sovereignty and the apparatuses of international relations first created to aid and abet the global distribution of white men’s control. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which has a more precise formal name — Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, Including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies — may seem surprisingly benevolent. It is sometimes summarized as saying that nobody can own space. But while it outlaws national appropriation, it allows incorporation without the state.

In a demotion from the sensual feel of its phrasing, “celestial bodies” become the body politic, managed sites of bans and requirements. While the U.S. did sign the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, it did not sign the 1979 Moon Treaty, more formally known as the Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. The Moon Treaty, among other directives, bans any state from claiming sovereignty over any territory of celestial bodies; bans any ownership of any extraterrestrial property by any organization or person, unless that organization is international and governmental; and requires an international regime be set up to ensure safe and orderly development and management of the resources and sharing of the benefits from them. It also bans military activity such as weapons testing or the founding of extraterrestrial military bases (though it’s hard to see U.S. presence anywhere in the stars or on Earth as anything other than militaristic). 

Evoking the common heritage of “mankind,” the Moon Treaty could appear a pie-in-the-sky attempt at more equitable relations to land than have been established on Earth since the advent of private property and national borders. But it is of course expressed only in the stop-gap measure of treaties that assign power to states, governments, and resource-management regimes. The power of the treaty is in its possible revoking. In making the decision to sign the treaty or not sign the treaty, the collectives state their unquestioned right to make decisions in space at all.

Space is a place where old and new sovereignties, like asteroids desired for mining, are colliding or sometimes colluding. There is a line connecting the Dutch East India Company, the Hudson Bay Company, and SpaceX. These companies begin as corporate endeavors, but then as now the nation-state is sticky: It finds a way to adhere. Take the case of Luxembourg, a polity that lives on tax loopholes (allowing large corporations to move money in and out of the nation with utmost secrecy and minimal charges) where, as Atossa Araxia Abrahamian reports for the Guardian, private space companies are finding their funding allies for financed trips to the moon, Mars, and the interstellar spots for satellites. The mixing of business and research mixes the money and power hungering of technocrats who don’t just want to own businesses but want people to see their businesses as the shareholders of humanity’s future.


In middle school we didn’t have model U.N., but we did have model Earth. For field trips we’d be taken away to Biosphere 2, a site for space-colonization experiments built by Space Biosphere Ventures but owned by Columbia University by the time I visited. In these field trips to the desert outside a town auspiciously named Oracle, we walked around the display vivarium, always being reminded to call it biosphere two — biosphere one was the earth outside, the one we had momentarily left behind and one day might leave behind for good. That old planet was a past prototype. But the new prototype was itself already a defunct research facility. The closed-system experiment with human subjects had failed twice in the ’90s, and it now rests as one of the many dreams littering the desert of a new world.

When a world is new, it creates alongside a space held for the older worlds. This is the drama between what can be brought from before and what will be made anew. It is why Aeneas carried his dying father Anchises on his shoulders out of Troy on his way to found Rome. The traveler always brings baggage. Jeff Bezos would like to be the one who carries that baggage to space or controls the robots and poorly paid temporary laborers who accomplish the carrying. In this supposedly new space, the regimes of inequality will be quite familiar. The space-goers insist it is something called humanity, with the ingrained hierarchical legacies of this category, that will be going.

Leaders in industry who have always wanted to be world leaders are now positioning themselves as leaders of outer worlds. Elon Musk makes union busting seem like a cosmic necessity for the continuation of human life. The material and subsequent cultural valorization of certain kinds of work in the tech industry, wherein the “great minds” make all the money and those who maintain the machinery of day-to-day existence are treated like the shit they’re supposed to take, does not end at the stratosphere.

Even the more lofty moral considerations of outer-space ethics (e.g., is terraforming ever morally acceptable?) often ignore their fundamental basis in deathly processes still very much situated on Earth. Any outer-space endeavor today or in the near future will be an extension of the life-destroying capacities of capitalists and their colonial countries. On the Deep Space Industries page for asteroid mining, the exploitation and extraction of minerals is heralded as “an unlimited future for all mankind.” The endless extension of capitalist accumulation comes with an extension of this delusion of “all mankind.” As if all such projects, the project of humanity itself, has not always been an exclusionary one.

SETI may appear to inhabit a different realm of speculation than that of the grandstanding services-and-commodities pioneers. But its project also follows a willful ignorance about human history and the exclusions that make humanity as a class possible. SETI proponents, much like Musk and his ilk, view themselves at the forefront of a new breakthrough not necessarily of capital but of knowledge. Their sites of expansion are not centered so much on the territories capital requires in order to enclose, privatize, and extract until depletion (though they can be intimately connected, as in the development of the university and research centers as global actors of dispossession), but on sites of encounter. Outer-space commerce and funded extraterrestrial contact-seekers operate on and reinforce damaging notions of land, life, and the future that actually hinder the survival of most Earth dwellers rather than provide anything like meaningful hope.


Stories of contact are only ever understood as colonial stories. Every inquiry of future contact with extraterrestrial life, from academic and government-funded to amateur and whimsical, relies on the same stale comparisons of colonial conquest. Columbus, of course; Captain James Cook, often. Every episode of the podcast Making New Worlds: Why Are We Going? features historical authorities commenting on colonial situations of the past and comparing them to hypothetical situations with extraterrestrials. The topics convened by those who are granted the authority to speak on them are conducted under the tyranny of certain givens, the most persistent and damning of them being contact as conquest.

Science fiction should allow us some way to bend around these frames, and occasionally, in the right hands, it does, though it more often does not. Donna Haraway, whose work takes on the tones of science fiction, sees the science-fiction tradition as a form of theorizing. She repeats across her different writings that “it matters what concepts we think to think other concepts with.” And while I do not take her up on thinking with the “chthulucene,” I do come to science fiction in a similar way, to think through the science and the fictions that constitute our realities. I want science fiction that doesn’t make heroes of pioneers, that leaves space open for other kinds of speculation. If the villains of my space saga operate on the understanding that there is always a newer world, how do we tell a different story? A different approach to the new, a different understanding of different.

What we should be preparing for in outer space is not sameness on a different scale, the neatly reflected sides of an analogy, but refracted difference. What is the life in the search for extraterrestrial life? Astrobiologists, like those who study extreme forms of life in deserts like the Southwest in preparation for Martian ecosystems, are searching for the translatable other. Nathalie Cabrol from the SETI institute says that the question astrobiologists ask is the question of difference: How to approach a different type or version of life. Yet in movies like Arrival, I’m disappointed with the limits of alien imagination and the clichés about language and conquest. In the short story by Ted Chiang that Arrival is based on, “Story of Your Life,” the aliens are not large octopuses but heptapods whose radially symmetrical bodies are like seven-eyed barrels hovering “suspended at the intersection” of seven fluid-moving limbs. The most interesting thing about their description is that it is so hard to picture. Unfortunately, only two pages into the story, the linguist narrator draws on a made-up account of linguistic confusion between Captain Cook and Indigenous inhabitants of current-day Australia, making a seemingly necessary gesture to the anxiety that extraterrestrial intelligence will always inhabit the position of colonizer. The story is never different enough. We can’t always see difference differently enough.

And yet there are times we get a glimpse of what that different difference might be. On scales from a parasitic romance to multi-generational future epic, Octavia Butler wrote out multiple worlds of a time after Earth as we know it, when human survival seems dependent on adapting to and becoming alien. The short story “Bloodchild” and the three-part trilogy Lilith’s Brood (which I will refer to hereafter by its original title, Xenogenesis, which is both more badass and more accurate) are texts about the transformations and exchanges that precipitate the post-human.

Though these stories are far from utopic, Butler also emphasizes that the story of post-Earth humans would not be “the British Empire in space.” She envisions contact as a moment of exchange. In “Bloodchild” this is not without loss and unequal stances of power, but there is also love of a different kind between an insectoid and the host to whom she feeds subduing eggs. All this beautiful bug being asks in return for otherworldly hospitality is that her beloved open himself up to an implantation of eggs that, if not removed promptly through a torso-wide incision upon birth, will proceed to eat through his flesh. “Who knows what we humans have that others might be willing to take in trade for a livable space on a world not our own?”


Land and life are the categories of thought that outer space can call us to interrogate, to repair not only by some future metric of what has never been done but also by what might have been possible had colonialism not happened as it did, if exploration and contact could have happened in another way. These are the what-ifs of a science fiction that turns away from the frontier to other spaces of transformation and invention. These are stories that do not call for a future for humanity but a time and people co-constituted according to different logics, those of interdependent collective living in the now.

In Butler’s Xenogenesis series, the Oankali are a technologically superior race that also embody and enact what has previously been considered primitive on Earth. On their ship-world, for instance, they live across a different division of animate and inanimate in which the ship is capable of remarkable acts of generation and sustainability, not because of machine learning but because it is itself a living, reproducing creature-thing. The Oankali are the mouthpiece for Butler’s idea that humans have a social tendency to create hierarchies so entrenched in inequality and domination they result in mass war, and that this hierarchical tendency is genetic. It is with a similar cynicism that the narrator of Joanna Russ’ 1976 novel We Who Are About decides it is best to kill herself and her fellow crew members rather than try to continue human life on a crash-landed planet.

While I love these texts and find myself often in their fatalism, I also see their potential to guide us to change before we are killed off by the will to death and domination practiced by those who have been in power for far too long. I see sequels to these works in which our species learns or relearns the need for different needs. In these other stories the alien is not the harbinger of doom but all the tense dynamic potential of the encounter.

A face turned toward the landscapes of Arizona or New Mexico is always about to say, “It looks like Mars.” All that red rock and the surprisingly organic shapes the sandstone makes. The seeming inhospitality of the afternoon desert. It all signals the alien, but it is certainly not alien to the people who live in these landscapes. And yet Navajo filmmaker Nanobah Becker used footage of Monument Valley to represent Mars in her sci-fi short film The Sixth World. What is in part the cleverness of low-budget filmmaking is also an act of un-alienation that creates a sympathy between ancestral Navajo territory and a Navajo novum on Mars. In Becker’s film, indigeneity is not only defined by prior occupancy but, more important, by a set of practices that attune to difference but are not incapable of making a home in the alien.

To go to outer space, rather than preserve humanity, we cannot stay human. Any critique of the human, including mine, is hugely indebted to black studies, a site that contends that the development of the figure of the human is inseparable from the racial orders that classify people as human, not quite human, and nonhuman wherein human is always proximity to whiteness and nonhuman is proximity to blackness. This is what Alexander Weheliye has argued in his book Habeas Viscus, drawing from black feminist critique to rouse all other minoritarian subjects to abandon our bids into the human project and refuse the calculus that grants others personhood always at the cost of further exclusion and violence against black people. The Jamaican philosopher, novelist, and playwright Sylvia Wynter has stated that one of the projects of black studies is an inquiry into and enactment of other ways of being a species, ways counter to the form of human that is taken to mean the Enlightenment’s rational man. This is a refutation of the idea of the human as a self-possessed sovereign being, defined by his ability to possess and improve property. When I think of how else humans could be, this means operating under different modes of production and different relations to land and being that are communist, nonhierarchical, and deeply pleasurable.

Returning to the late ’60s and that first view of the world from outside, I consider the failure of vulnerable Earth’s image to enact planetary action against borders, war. But if the extra-industrialists have their sights and sites on the celestial bodies, and if this earth will soon be flooded and inflamed, those routinely exiled from the class of humanity that space exploration is in service of need our own space programs, and with it, a deprogramming of the human. Outer space gives us a place to socially, sensorially, think how we want to think. If the search for an “out there” does truly prompt a shift in consciousness, it should be one that helps us inhabit the present, to study together on biosphere one until we find another way of living that doesn’t leave so many dead. This is not a statement against outer space or exploration. What I want, what I need, is a space program for the people.

The Activity Pill

In Vancouver, we put in bike lanes and encourage an active lifestyle in part because of health benefits (see below). But what if there was another way to get these benefits?

Exercise.PillRecent huge, major medical studies (discussed HERE in Price Tags) confirm the long-held belief that incorporating activity into the regular, routine parts of one’s life is strongly associated with enormous health benefits.  And people often posit, somewhat wryly, that a pill with similar benefits would be regarded as a miracle — to population health, to reduced medical costs and to the coffers of the developer, patent holder, supplier and the whole medical profit chain.  Talk about incentives. Wow.

It remains to be seen if the magic pill will be successful at producing the benefits of an active lifestyle (see below). Sceptics abound — but that won’t stop the hypemeisters and the greedy. Even if the pill is successful in limited circumstances.

If the pill is effective, it would be such a miracle, in fact, that people would be immediately suspicious. “Too good to be true”. “Crazy talk”.  And probably crazy prices too.  If even the hype is effective, it will attract many dollars to the owners.

So guess what.  The pill boffins in the labs are busy.  And so are those wrestling with law-bending bureaucratic machinations.

But what if a drug could stimulate the body into producing some of the same effects of exercise — more endurance and weight control, for example — without the need to run a single step? Such a pill may be on the way. Several scientists are testing compounds that apparently can do this — and people wouldn’t even have to move at all to benefit.

. . .  Any such drug would require licensing by the Food and Drug Administration, yet the FDA doesn’t recognize “the inability to exercise” as an illness in need of a drug. So Evans has targeted 516 for young people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, an approach that he believes offers the best chance for FDA approval.

Of course, until the pill’s on the market here in Vancouver, we’ll have to make do with changing our city so as to encourage and enable an active lifestyle.

What were the basic results?

A total of 263,540 adults (52.4% of the total recruited to the Biobank), with an average age of 52.6 years, joined this sub-study. Only those in paid employment were included.

During the follow-up period of around five years 2,430 people died, 496 of which were due to cardiovascular disease. There were an additional 3,748 cancer events and 1,110 cardiovascular events.

Cycling was the mode of commuting most strongly linked to reduced risk of death, cardiovascular disease and cancer. When compared to the non-active group the following was seen:

41% lower risk of death from any cause
52% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease (HR: 0.48, 95% CI: 0.25 to 0.92)
46% lower risk of cardiovascular events (HR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.33 to 0.88)
40% lower risk of dying from cancer (HR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.40 to 0.90)
45% lower risk of a cancer event (HR: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.44 to 0.69)

Is Your Hearing at Risk? Here’s What You Can Do

If someone told you that wearing certain jeans too often might trigger permanent leg numbness, or overuse of a hot sauce would cause you to lose your ability to taste sweets, you’d pay attention. You’d want to know exactly how long it would take before damage occurred. You’d make sure that you don’t go too far. You might even buy different jeans or hot sauce. Well, here’s a scary truth: What you might be doing right now to your ears could lead to permanent hearing damage. Really. But the good news is that there are some easy things you can do to prevent it.

Most people believe hearing damage is caused by sudden, excessive sound, like loud bangs and explosions. And that’s true; incredibly loud individual sounds can damage your inner ears. But that’s not how most noise-induced hearing loss is caused—it’s caused by exposure to louder-than-recommended noises over a long period of time. This is because our ears’ nerve cells—like your muscles after a workout—need a break every so often to repair themselves and flush out waste. If we don’t give our ears that rest, the nerve cells can die. And once a hearing nerve cell dies it doesn’t grow back, and the sound frequency it corresponded to is gone forever. This is why some people have trouble hearing speech, while others might not hear deep bass notes well.

To avoid hearing damage, the OSHA standard that the World Health Organization recommends over the course of an eight-hour day is 85 decibels (the average volume of the NYC subway [PDF]). At 91 dB (a hair dryer), that time decreases to two hours. At 106 dB (a rock concert), you’ve got less than four minutes. In other words, the louder the sound you’re experiencing, the less time you’ve got before bad things can happen. And once you’ve hit your daily threshold, you’ll be putting your ears at risk. This adds up fast. Two hours in traffic, plus four hours drowning out coworkers with your headphones, plus a movie could equal maxing out your day’s noise dosage.

To add to the problem, we don’t always notice when sounds are getting too loud to be safe. Like being unable to smell your own perfume, our bodies gradually adapt to the noises around us. So in order for something to feel louder in an already loud environment, we increasingly need to up the volume. For example: Have you ever turned on your TV in the morning, and it seems astonishingly loud? It didn’t seem that loud the night before, right? This volume-creep effect is why that happens. After a day of traffic, the subway, music, a bar, a sporting event … your brain needs your TV to be blaring for your ears to feel like the volume is up. It’s like the old adage about boiling a frog by slowly increasing the temperature of the water. You don’t notice that everything has been getting turned up until it could be too late. So what does this all mean? You may already be experiencing some hearing damage and not know it. A recent study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University estimates that by 2020 more than 44 million American adults ages 20 or older can be expected to suffer from hearing loss—and more than 73 million by 2060 if current trends continue.

The 67 to 86 percent of adults who may benefit from hearing aids do not use them. Plus, unlike the EU (PDF), the US has no laws for how loud your audio devices can be, only unenforceable guidelines (PDF). We often assume that if a product is for sale, it must be safe to use. But that’s not always the case.

How do can you avoid becoming a statistic?

  • First of all, protect. If you are going to be somewhere that you know is loud, wear earplugs. Not all earplugs are created equal. Some are made to muffle everything significantly, like our recommendation for sleeping. Others, like these from Etymotic offer less reduction, just taking the edge off the volume, so you can still hear everything around you well. I use this kind for concerts, nightclubs, sporting events, even group exercise classes at the gym! Don’t laugh, I took a measurement in one of my spin classes, and the volume sat around 90 dB the entire hour!
  • Second, keep an eye on the volume at which you listen to music and movies, as well as the duration. The WHO recommends listening at no more than roughly 60 percent of mobile-device volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time. (This is particularly important to keep in mind in the US, because unlike the EU (PDF), the US has no laws about how loud your audio devices can be, only unenforceable guidelines. Again, we often assume that if a product is for sale, it must be safe to use. But that’s not always the case, so better to err on the side of safety.) This 60/60 recommendation applies to both kids and adults. So every hour or so, take a break. Get up, walk around, give your ears some silence.
  • Third, consider new gear. If you ride the subway daily, fly long-haul often, or you work in a noisy environment, you may want to consider noise-cancelling or noise-isolating headphones. By blocking out the noise around you, you won’t need to compete by turning up your music. If you have a child in your life, you’ll absolutely want to invest in some volume limiting headphones for kids.

If you are already experiencing some hearing loss, consider a PSAP, or personal sound amplification product. These devices are becoming more common due to the recently passed law that will allow the sale of over-the-counter hearing aids. However, bear in mind, there isn’t any safety regulation on these devices yet. Depending on the research involved in a given product’s development, there may be varying levels of accuracy and safety. This also applies to headphones that test and adjust to your hearing via an included app, like these from Nura, Beyerdynamic, and MEE Audio.

If this all sounds like a lot to keep track of, there is hope that we could get an assist from phone and audio manufacturers. I spoke with Dr. Brian Fligor, founder and president of Boston Audiology Consultants, Inc., and chair of the WHO’s Make Listening Safe Task Force, and asked him: If we can track things like steps, heart rate, calories consumed, and sleep on our phone’s health apps, could phone manufacturers develop something so that could we also track our noise diet? Is that possible, and plausible?

Based on our conversation, the answer is yes, it’s totally doable. The tech exists. The specific WHO guidelines should be out this year. All a smartphone needs to do is:

  1. Track your listening habits like tracking your steps, and suggest safer options. Dr. Fligor recommended that a device, “Monitor a user’s listening level over time (the “dose”), compare the individual’s documented listening behavior to the standards on hearing loss risk from the scientific literature.”
  2. Send alerts if you are reaching unsafe volume or duration. (Anyone who has “closed their circles” on an Apple Watch gets how this could work.) Dr. Fligor added, “There should be a max output limit,” and that “a standard to define an upper max output will serve as a cap, but this is not the focus. Maximum output level-limiting is not an appropriate method for reducing hearing loss risk from user personal audio systems (headphones, etc.) because it ignores the fact that hearing is damaged from sound levels over time.”

Adults don’t need our car’s speed limited at 55 miles per hour, we just need a speedometer that lets us know we are going too fast, and assume we understand the consequences of exceeding that limit. Parental controls could help protect little ones. And the phone companies are already involved in this conversation. Dr. Fligor said his taskforce at the WHO is working on developing standards that it will present to the International Telecommunications Union very soon, hopefully later this year.

Companies like Apple, Google, or Samsung could easily develop this kind of feature as part of their health apps. Just as their devices can contribute to the hearing-loss problem, they also could assist as part of the solution.

Until then, think of this process as a “sound diet.” A piece of cake is okay once in a while, but cake for every meal isn’t good for you. Keep track of your listening habits, and make healthy choices, and you’ll be able to hear everything you love for a long time to come.

This article and the dozens and dozens of comments that follow (I read them all) kept me interested, which is a sign to me that it's worth including in the newsletter. Ultimately we will read that there is no case for the humanities because there doesn't need to be one; " It is not the humanities that we have lost faith in, but the economic, political, and social order that they have been made to serve." But before we get to that point we get a thorough restatement of the argument against the humanities - that they're too obscure, that there's too much production, that teaching is ignored, and worst, that they serve a private elitist community. It's clever because it uses the language of the critics and not just the ideas, and it is this, I think, that resulted in such a productive discussion in the comments.

He outlines some key areas where work needs to be done, for example: " we must support policies and business models that expand access to the world’s poorest." But the web is less diverse than it used to be and a few platformes have monopolized much of web traffic. Tweetdecking is Either a New Buzzword or a Doomed One

I’ve often said that if you try to game Google for SEO purposes, you are going up against the best engineers in the world. And since the Goose that lays the Golden Google eggs is the quality of search results, anything that is done outside the parameters of what Google approves of is like asking Google to turn you into invisibility.

Twitter seems to be understanding that approach…finally. Seems like they started crushing something called “tweetdecking” over the weekend.

Tweetdecking, as it’s called, is an explicit violation of Twitter’s spam policy, which does not allow users to “sell, purchase, or attempt to artificially inflate account interactions.”

Still, Twitter has previously struggled to crack down on these accounts.

After a BuzzFeed News story uncovered the practice of tweetdecking in January, Twitter announced new spam-fighting changes to Tweetdeck, including removing the ability to simultaneously retweet a tweet across multiple accounts.

Tweetdecking is over. Our follower gains are gonna diminish,” Andrew Guerrero, a 23-year-old tweetdecker in New Mexico, told BuzzFeed News after Twitter announced the changes in February.

The percentages are included in the legend titles in the event that some readers of the chart may want to know the specific numbers, but my feeling for the intent of the original pac-man pies was to provide a list that didn’t include China-proper (despite 45 using them to rile up his base) and give a sense of proportion for the “top 10”. The waffle chart isn’t perfect for it, but it is one option.

Surveys on ride-hailing conducted by regional planning agencies, academic institutions, and public transit agencies throughout the U.S. reviewed by the Associated Press largely led to the same conclusion: more traffic and reduced use of transit.

One of the most comprehensive studies on ride-hailing which surveyed 4,000 users in seven major metropolitan areas was released last October by UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) …

The study “found that a large portion of travelers are substituting ride-hailing in place of public transit, biking, and walking trips, or would not have made the trips at all,” wrote Clewlow

A ridership study [pdf] also released last October by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority … found that “30% of passengers across all modes report that using [ride-hailing] services reduces their use of the MBTA.”

The two studies were among many reviewed by Steve LeBlanc of the Associated Press on Feb. 25. All but one conducted by Seattle-based firm INRIX that evaluated traffic congestion in London found transportation network companies (TNCs) contributing to traffic congestion and transit ridership reductions.

“The emerging consensus is that ride-sharing (is) increasing congestion,” said Christo Wilson, a professor of computer science at Boston’s Northeastern University who has analyzed Uber’s surge pricing.

SotD: Atomic

Oh… your hair is beautiful  — well, that lyric divides people. I’ve read high-falutin’ rock critics slam its superficiality, embedded in a track that hardly has words anyhow, and certainly none that make sense. But you know, every time she sings that phrase, I melt. And love the whole song.

Back in the day when the band had hits on the radio I liked every one of them, and when they didn’t any more, I bought The Best of Blondie and man, I’m not sure there’s ever been a pop recording with more end-to-end concentrated excellence. I noticed when my kids were young, I’d put it on and every time, they’d both start dancing right away.

The songs are great, the arrangements are razor-sharp, and then Debbie Harry, on top of being a fine singer, has in certain periods been the hippest, coolest, most fashionable human being on the planet. I saw a show in the Nineties when she was touring under her own name; and got pretty close to the stage. She was wearing this dull-silver one-piece dress with a fine diamond pattern on it, neither tight nor loose, matching shoes, and when the spotlight caught her, there was just absolutely no looking away; I don’t know how that “star quality” thing works, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never been a room with anyone who had more. What’s remarkable about it is, she carries it off without even being much of a dancer.

Anyhow, I could have picked a half-dozen songs off the Best Of to be today’s song, and made a strong case for every one of them. My personal favorite is Call Me, but there’s a dark side; I read an interview with one of the band members, who was bitter: “You got to understand that Blondie wasn’t a band, it was Debbie and Chris Stein’s project, they went off in the studio and made Call Me for the American Gigolo sound-track, and none of us ever got to play a note, and then the band broke up, so I never played it in concert either.”

SotD: After Midnight

After midnight, it’s gonna be peaches and cream… mmmmm. This, originally by J.J. Cale, is one of the Twentieth Century’s sweetest little electric-music outings, gentle, sexy, and fast. Now, J.J. made a whole lot of money on this song when Eric Clapton decided to put it on a couple of albums and play it at a whole lot of concerts, and both versions are worth hearing.

I saw J.J. play once —  stage-managed the show, in fact had to convince him to play an encore. I’ve seen Clapton several times and while he might not the greatest guitarist to have ever lived, he never plays a song the same way twice. So if you go to see him, you’ll hear music that didn’t exist before that night and will never exist again. Pretty good bargain, I’d say.

There was a thing he did in his early-Nineties shows that I haven’t noticed recently when he’s on TV, which is on a slow blues, he’d go way up the neck and play these slow more or less completely atonal sequences that you kept noticing were somehow perfectly pitched against the underlying blues chord changes. I’ll never forget it and I don’t know if anyone ever recorded it.

Just One Night

My favorite version of this song is on Clapton’s Just One Night recorded live in Japan in late 1979. It’s a great album end to end, with masterful versions of Dylan’s If I Don’t Be There By Morning, the Clapton/Danko All Our Past Times, and of course J.J.’s own Cocaine. But After Midnight, wow, they take it double extra fast, and the big closing solo is a pedal-to-the-medal rhythm workout, the only time I’ve ever heard Clapton just bear down and play a half-dozen choruses as fast as he can, and he was really on that night. Wonderful work.

While I’m recommending Clapton products, he’s had a series of “Crossroad Guitar Festival” fundraisers, which have produced some really great Rock-&-Roll TV and DVDs. Also, his autobiography, while lacking the hilarious decadence of Keef’s and the musical depth of Miles’s, cuts across a super-interesting slice of twentieth-century music history.

SotD: K.515

I believe its official name is Mozart’s String Quintet No. 3 in C, but saying “K” then a number tells everyone that it’s by Mozart, and since he wrote like fifty instances of every known form of classical music, it’s easier to just remember your favorite K-numbers. 515 is right up there among mine; strong Mozart, which is all you need to know.

By the way, if you’re wondering about those K-numbers, Wikipedia’s Köchel catalogue article has you covered. The thing is that since Mozart was usually broke and trying to convince three different wealthy patrons that he was their exclusive guy, he wrote music like a crazed gerbil on steroids and didn’t keep much in the way of records, so trying to organize his oeuvre has been the work of several other people’s lifetimes.

I’ll tell you about K515, but first I have a Classical Music Joke and a Classical Music Failed Romance Story, so hang in there.

Joke: A wise man is lost in a fantastical city and needs to get to the train station. He stands at a crossroads with three ways forward, uncertain. First to come along is the Easter Bunny, and the wise man asks: “Which way to the train station?” The Easter Bunny says “Go left.” Second is a good viola player, who says “Straight ahead.” Third is a bad viola player, who says “Go right.” The wise man sees that obviously he must go right, because there is no Easter Bunny and there are no good viola players. (Seriously, this is what classical-music people are like when they’ve had a couple of drinks.) The joke is relevant because K515 turns a string quartet into a quintet by adding an extra viola.

The second story: When I was much younger I was manager of the New Oxford English Dictionary Project at the University of Waterloo; about as much fun as you can have and get paid for. We regularly hosted Oxford University Press lexicographers for a term of residency with the computer geeks at Waterloo. One was a young single female Scottish lexicographer who made quite an impression on me, but I was married, and even though the marriage was failing, it wasn’t over. Anyhow, a year or so later the marriage had comprehensively failed and I was visiting Oxford, so I poked around to see what was on, and emailed the lexicographer, wondering if she’d be interested in joining me for an evening of Mozart chamber music. She emailed back saying “Fortunately, my boyfriend is working late, so sure.” Sigh. Oh well. Anyhow, it was in the Chapel of Wadham College, which is a lovely room albeit with horribly uncomfortable seats, and we had a good time anyhow, and the music was K 515, which I’d never heard before that and now it’s one of my faves.

This piece is an extended musical conversation, and not subtle either, you can hear the voices flip back and forth between the instruments, dance around each other then together, then in echoes both strong and subtle. It’s a remarkable piece of musical architecture and also great fun to listen to.

A huge number of chamber-music agglomerations have recorded this. The version I have is on Naxos, by the Éder Quartet (not big stars), but it’s beautifully balanced and I love it.

A behind-the-scenes look at some of the tech powering Netflix streaming

Since launching its streaming service in 2007, Netflix has become a ubiquitous form of entertainment, operating in over 190 countries around the world.

Because of that, some people may take the ability to stream thousands of TV series and movies on demand for granted, paying no mind to the assuredly massive technical demands associated with operating the platform.

To demonstrate this, Netflix invited journalists to take a tour through its Hollywood and Los Gatos offices in California. There, members of the press were able to learn about some of the sophisticated technology and work that goes into running one of the world’s largest digital media and entertainment company.

Here’s what MobileSyrup took away from the event.

Iterative infrastructure

“The internet keeps evolving, Netflix keeps evolving, what people want out a service like Netflix keeps evolving, so it’s a constant series of different venues of invention in trying to make the service better and better in different environments around the world,” said Netflix vice president of content delivery Ken Florance during a presentation.

According to Florance, Netflix users around the world watch around 140 million hours of content every single day. That number is only an average, with some days seeing much higher traffic volumes. January 7th, 2018 marked the company’s highest-ever day for streaming, Florance said, with 350 million hours of content watched on that day alone. To put that in perspective, that’s 40,309 years worth of global viewing packed into a single day.

Netflix Everywhere message on TV

To keep up with that kind of ever-increasing demand, Florence said Netflix utilizes robust streaming infrastructure comprised of two primary components. The first element is the control system, which Florance said manages all of the ways users interact with Netflix. On a technical level, this system is responsible for how users login to Netflix, how recommendations are determined and offered to them, where users pause and resume playback and more. The control system also retains global knowledge of internet routing systems and runs off of Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud technology.

The second component of the control system is Netflix’s custom-built content delivery network (CDN), which handles the actual streaming of audio and visual data to devices. Netflix’s CDN is powered by OpenConnect, multiple servers connected around the world that help guide users’ streams to the best network for them. Florance said these servers come in two forms: storage servers (such as hard drives and spinning disks) which can each store 250TB with a bitrate of about 20-40Gbps — and flash servers, which are used for the most popular content and boast a bitrate of up to 100 Gbps. Netflix engineers typically work on adding content to these servers overnight or at times when app traffic is slower, in order to avoid potentially disrupting users at peak traffic times.

According to Florance, any content that Netflix knows will be among its hottest titles (like the recently launched second season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones) will be loaded onto practically every server on its network. Being able to pre-position content in such a way gives Netflix an advantage that social media like Facebook or YouTube don’t have, Florance said. He noted this is because content on those platforms is user-generated and, therefore, cannot fully be prepared for in the way the launch of all thirteen new episodes of Jessica Jones can be.

On the other hand, it can sometimes be difficult to maintain quality streaming in real-time, Florance said. “We’re streaming data in from the network and you’re playing it out to your screen, whether that screen is a TV or a phone or whatever,” Florance explained. “Our job is to get the data across the network faster than it’s playing out to your screen.”

To do that, Netflix uses an adaptive streaming engine to monitor and manage data coming in from the network — a system that Florance likens to preventing a bucket from leaking water. “You’ve got a bucket that you’re filling with water from a hose, which represents the data coming in from the network,” he said. “It’s draining out, which represents what you’re watching on the screen. And our job is not to let that bucket empty out, basically, which is equivalent to buffering on your device.”

Enter the (encoding) matrix

Netflix’s success in stopping the proverbial bucket from spilling out is largely dependent on the work of the video algorithms, led by director Anne Aaron. According to Aaron, her group is responsible for compressing video files to ensure users experience seamless playback at the highest quality. For example, she mentioned that the final episode of season two of Jessica Jones, titled “Playland,’ was delivered to her team in 293GB of raw video. Such a high amount of raw video would not fit in the OpenConnect boxes, Aaron said, so her team had to then try to compress the video hundreds — or in other cases, even tens of thousands — of times.

This process is particularly essential for Netflix users who may experience low-bandwidth connections, unreliable networks or fixed data plans. As an example, Aaron pointed to her home country of the Philippines, where some of the more expensive service plans offer 4GB of data — an amount that initially might not offer much opportunity to consume content.

“If we were just using standard algorithms and not trying to optimize our encoding, and sent the video at 750Mbps, this would amount to only 10 hours of streaming. [With that], you couldn’t even watch an entire season of one show.” After optimizing the encoding, Aaron said someone in the Philippines could benefit from at least 26 hours of streaming on that same data plan.

Netflix functionality

To get to that point, though, Netflix had to go through several different iterations of the encoding process. First, in 2015, Aaron said her team realized that not every title in Netflix’s catalogue required the same amount of encoding work, even though they were all encoded through the exact same process. For example, she stated that Bojack Horseman (with its animation style and scenes mainly featuring characters standing around and talking) didn’t need to be encoded to the level that something like Jessica Jones (a live-action drama with a lot of motion) would call for.

After that discovery, the team switched to encoding on a per-title basis, Aaron said, although improvements didn’t stop there. “The complexity or the type of content that one show or one movie has could [sometimes] be changing,” she said. “So if we’re optimizing per title then this still isn’t being efficient.” She mentioned that although animation titles like Bojack Horseman or Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse required fewer bits in general, there were select episodes where animation may be more complex and therefore more difficult to encode.

In response, Aaron’s team updated its encoding algorithms to say “let’s optimize the encoding on a per chunk basis,” she said, which first took effect in 2016. She pointed out that this improvement reduced file sizes while leaving video quality intact, which helped in the download feature that launched in November 2016.

“But of course, we didn’t stop attacking the problem, just like Jessica Jones would,” Aaron said with a laugh. It’s most recent update to the encoding process is the addition of what Netflix calls a ‘dynamic optimizer encoding framework.’ She said the most natural way to segment a video for encoding is by shot, a sequence of frames in a video that are very similar to each another or have very uniform quality, such as a few characters seen through the same lighting in the same background.

“So we segment the video into shots, we analyze the content per shot and we make encoding decisions based on that shot, as well as other shots in the video, so that we can allocate the bits optimally with the overall goal of maintaining the best quality possible with the least amount of bits,” she explained. In learning over time about the intricacies of encoding for a massive streaming service, Aaron said her team has been able to find the most efficient method to date.

To deploy the latest system, Netflix adopted an automated metric that could maintain a standard of video quality. This was achieved by performing subjective tests with countless people to judge what made up optimal video playback. Netflix then used this data to train machine learning algorithm to determine how a human would perceive video and evaluate it accordingly. As well, Aaron said Netflix adopted the latest video formats and conducted extensive research into next-generation codex technology.

Through all these efforts, Aaron said Netflix has demonstrated marked improvements in streaming. For example, she said that in video that was at 70 percent picture quality — above-average but imperfect — this would previously have been encoded at 750Kbps. Now, the same quality can achieved at 270Kbps, marking a 74 percent decrease.

Aaron said over the past year, Netflix has painstakingly re-encoded its entire library using the improved algorithm. So far, the updated catalogue is available on Netflix on Android, iOS, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, while beta tests are currently ongoing for browsers and TV versions of the streaming service.

Testing, testing, testing

All of the servers and encoding technology in the world would mean nothing without platforms to run on. Currently, Netflix is available on over 1,700 models of devices around the world, ranging from different TVs, computers, phones, tablets and more. Because of this, the company needs to continuously conduct tests on each supported device in order to maintain quality streaming all across the board. To help with this process, Netflix uses what it calls a mobile automation lab.

At first glance, the lab seems rather unassuming, with many cables, some computers and a handful of Netflix Originals-themed lockers. However, stored in this room is a complex series of Wi-Fi networks that simulate connection speeds of varying levels of strength to emulate how a user’s experience may be affected by different circumstances, such as a location where signals are weaker. According to Scott Ryder, Netflix’s director of mobile streaming, the company has also managed to create and store six miniature cell towers within the lab to test cellular connections in a similar capacity.

The lockers, meanwhile, are used to house devices like phones and tablets that support Netflix. There, devices are connected to an automated testing system that enables Netflix to police them every few hours, as well as send data to the developers to monitor both positive and negative changes.

Ryder said that each day, Netflix runs at least 135,000 tests in this lab which produce reports containing several terabytes worth of data for developers. In its Los Gatos headquarters, Netflix aims to have at least one model of every device it runs on to use in these tests, even those that may not be as commonly used anymore. For example, at one point during a presentation, a pair of Netflix developers passing by mentioned they were going to grab an Xbox 360 and Wii U from storage — two older-generation consoles that are now discontinued. The lab’s automated system is also updated weekly to ensure stability and security, Ryder said.

Here’s what Android P might tell us about the Google Pixel 3

Android P’s Developer Preview gives us a glimpse of what we might see in Google’s upcoming 2018 Pixel smartphone.

The phone — which doesn’t even have a rumoured codename at this point — won’t be officially shown off until this coming fall at the earliest, but Google might have already revealed some of its surprises through Android P features.

It’s important to keep in mind that this is all purely speculation and that many of these features might not make their way to the Pixel 3.

The shadow of a notch

The Pixel 3 — which is what we’re going to call the device for now — will likely feature an iPhone X-inspired notch of some sort, if Android P is any indication. With Google’s Developer’s Preview, there’s now an option to include a small, tall and wide notch on the top of the display.

While the notch feature doesn’t work well with our Pixel smartphone at MobileSyrup, we expect the Pixel 3 will feature some sort of notch.

Dual-camera streaming

Android P will likely provide the ability to stream from two or more cameras simultaneously. For instance, those running the OS could use a wide-angle camera and a narrower aperture lens at the same time, or simultaneously use a rear-facing and selfie shooter.

With that in consideration, it’s possible that the upcoming Pixel may sport a dual rear camera setup.

Better Bluetooth

Android P’s capabilities will allow the 2018 Pixel to connect up to five Bluetooth devices at once. The current Pixel with Android O can only connect with up to two Bluetooth devices.

…and better Wi-Fi

The Pixel 3 will have IEEE 802.11mc support that allows apps to measure the distance between Wi-Fi access points.

The 2018 Pixel Could have hardware that can measure the distance between Wi-Fi access points and the phone. In a home with more than one Wi-Fi point, the 2018 Pixel will be able to accurately triangulate location within two metres.

Everything else

While not evident with Android P, previous rumours have indicated the Pixel 3 will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor.

Furthermore, it’s likely that the phone will sport 6GB of RAM — at least the XL version, IP68 water and dust resistance, and an 18:9 or 19:9 aspect ratio. In addition, with HTC likely handling the manufacturing side of the Pixel 3, its Active Edge functionality will likely be more improved, perhaps more in similarity with Google’s Edge Sense.

We’re already getting a better picture at what Google might have in-store for its Pixel 3. A smartphone with an iPhone X-inspired notch and on the rear possibly a dual camera setup.

However, there’s still a lot missing. We don’t know the phone display size, whether Google will continue with the plastic OLED display this year, or how big its battery will be.

Either way, hopefully, the handset won’t have as many issues as the Pixel 2 XL.
