NAKED TWINE JAM: Let's Make Games Together!

This weekend, let’s make games using Twine!

If you’ve never made a game before, Twine is a great place to start. It has an easy-to-use visual interface, requires no programming, and is totally free. There’s also a fantastic tutorial for the program by anna anthropy.

Twine is also very easy to customize. However, while visual modifications and external modifications can produce lots of interesting results, they aren’t at all necessary to tell compelling stories.

For this event, we’ll all work within the creative restriction of using only the basic Twine program with no CSS or Javascript modifications. If you don’t know what that means, then don’t worry about it! Just download the program here and start playing around with it.

Game jams vary in structure, with some having very tight timeframes and others spanning weeks or even months. For this event, you can start planning or even working on your game right away. Saturday, January 11th will be the main jam day — I’ll be on Twitter answering any questions people might have and offering tips for finishing your project, with the hashtag #nakedtwine.

The full rules for the jam are as follows:

  • Make something using Twine, with no external Javascript or CSS modification
  • Upload your finished HTML file to a personal website or a site like philome.la
  • Email the link to me at merrittkopas@gmail.com by 11:59 PM on Saturday, January 11th

That said, this event isn’t a competition. Feel free to work with others, to start as soon or as late as you like, and to make something as short or long, as simple or complex as you want to. This isn’t about pressure, it’s about providing an impetus to create something publicly and to build connections between people interested in making digital games.

All games made during the jam will be listed here and on my website after the event is over. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch via email or Twitter!

BECOME A GREAT ARTIST IN JUST 10 SECONDS is a game about creation under constraint by andi mcc and Michael Brough.

Download (Windows & Mac)

Why Try It: An unusual visual art creation game with freeform & structured challenge modes.

Time: Five minutes.

How to Play: Press keys to alter the image on the left in different ways in order to try and reproduce the image on the right as closely as possible.

Author’s Notes: "Have you ever dreamed of being an Artist? Although this was not possible before, now it is because we have made a computer program. Let your imagination soar in Sketch mode, or take a 10-second Exam in which your imagination is subjected to the brutal and arbitrary standards of an unfeeling public under unreasonable time pressures. Be an artist, it is fun"

More Info: More of andi mcc’s games and other work can be found at her site. You can also find her on Twitter. Michael Brough’s other games can be found here; he also maintains a game design blog and a Twitter account.

You can also follow this Twitter account, which publishes images generated in the game four times a day.

by emilyaldenfoster

channingkennedy:

MERRY CHRISTMAS HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Here’s our family holiday cards from since we started making them in 2008. In 2011 we didn’t make one and in 2009 we made two (and then we couldn’t find the original file for the second one, hence the weird screengrab). I’m especially fond of my photoshop work on myself-as-reintaur in 2009, and of Emily’s photoshop work stretching the cats out in 2012. And 2010’s is an aesthetic favorite of us both.

If you didn’t get a holiday card from us, it’s your own fault for ignoring our repeated requests for your mailing address. Get on the queue now for next year!

This is exactly like the Gift of the Magi, because I had the same post all queued up ready to go and then Channing scooped me. EXACTLY THE SAME!

Nintendo Pastel Cards (パステル トランプ, late 1960s)

by Erik V
I am not sure if this card product was a small stroke of genius, or the result of a lack of inspiration.

Nintendo Pastel Cards (late 1960s)

After designing hundreds of card styles, maybe one day the Nintendo creative team drew a blank? If this is what happened, then they bounced back right away.

The particular set I am talking about is called Pastel Cards (パステル トランプ).

100 years ago today, the first crossword puzzle was published, according to Smithsonian (1). In Ukraine Serhiy Petyuk decorated a house with a crossword puzzle, where you can see the letters only at the night (2). Ken Knowlton and Frank Longo made the portrait crossword (3). Christian Svanes Kolding made the QR-crossword (4).
