Cops: Intoxicated woman holding a baby on lap crashes car

by wtopstaff

EPHRATA, Pa. (AP) — Police say a Pennsylvania woman was driving under the influence and holding a baby on her lap when she crashed her vehicle into a curb.

Police tell LNP (http://bit.ly/1SI2Q8K ) that Erika Rizzon, of Ephrata (EH’-fruh-tuh), struck a curb at the intersection just after 10 p.m. Saturday in Ephrata.

Witnesses told police that the 32-year-old Rizzon was holding a baby at the time of the crash.

Ephrata police Sgt. Philip Snavely says the 8-month-old child was checked for injuries, then was released to a family member.

Rizzon was arraigned Sunday on charges of driving under the influence and child endangerment and released on $3,000 unsecured bail.

Online court documents don’t list an attorney for her.

Tesla Announces Software Upgrade That Allows A Car To Park Itself

by Mary Beth Quirk

(Courtesy of Consumer Reports)
As carmakers continue to push for fully autonomous vehicles that will take the hassle out of driving, Tesla Motors is taking another step in that direction with a software upgrade that will allow Model S owners to park them in a garage or perpendicular spaces without anyone behind the wheel.

Owners will be able to park from outside the car as long as the sedan is within 33 feet of a garage or narrow space, Elon Musk said at a press conference on Sunday, ahead of the Detroit auto show, reports Bloomberg. Cars can also be called to the owner from the spot, though the tools remain in beta for the moment.

Drivers will be able to use the software in a few weeks, the company said, with CEO Elon Musk calling the move a “baby step” on the company’s way to making cars that can be driven completely without human intervention. Musk says he thinks within two years, a Tesla owner will be able to summon an electric car to drive autonomously from Los Angels to New York.

“I might be slightly optimistic on that, but I don’t think significantly optimistic that we can do that in two years,” Musk said at the press conference, adding that it would be technically likely to have fully autonomous vehicles within 24 to 36 months.

University Ripped For Pushing Chocolate Milk As Concussion Treatment

by Chris Morran

(Karen Chappell)
A University of Maryland program that “promotes the development and commercialization of products and processes through industry/university research partnerships,” is being criticized for not just declaring that a particular brand of chocolate milk can improve cognitive skills of athletes who suffered a concussion, but for making that declaration without releasing any data to back it up.

Right before Christmas, the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) program, which teams up state school researchers with local companies, sent out a press release claiming that some new brand of chocolate milk “helped high school football players improve their cognitive and motor function over the course of a season, even after experiencing concussions.”

But a panel at HealthNewsReview.org, a site that evaluates news stories and press releases on health-related issues, recently shredded the chocolate milk announcement, saying that facts are “are almost absent from this boastful release touting vague neurological benefits of a specific chocolate milk.”

The panel criticizes the release for not providing specifics on the extent of the measured improvement. Additionally, researchers used a test with 36 different measurements, but did not specify which of these metrics showed improvement.

MIPS also throws out terms like “protein,” “calcium,” and “electrolytes,” which are “likely to be critical for the recovery process after brain injuries,” but glosses over the fact that a single serving of this chocolate milk contains the equivalent of eight teaspoons of sugar.

Obviously, press releases can’t be expected to contain all of the information in a piece of scientific research, which is why scientists publish their work — so it can be reviewed and reproduced.

However, in this case, the press release is all anyone has to go on, as MIPS has not yet published this study, nor does it appear to have been peer-reviewed by an outside source.

But even though the study is not being made available for public vetting, the MIPS release includes a statement from a school superintendent who says “Now that we understand the findings of this study, we are determined to provide [the chocolate milk] to all of our athletes.”

Health-issues writer Casey Hinds contends that this statement runs counter to “peer-reviewed and published research which show high-sugar diets increase the risk of chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cancer.”

We showed the release to Kathleen Bachynski, a Ph.D. candidate in Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, who had a number of concerns about the MIPS announcement.

“A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury that can cause serious short- and long-term consequences. Claims that drinking any particular beverage or product will alleviate the risks of concussions are misleading,” says Bachynski. “Most concerning is that promoting the benefits of this chocolate milk could misguide teenagers into attempting to return to play too soon after experiencing a concussion, and before seeking proper medical attention.”

We reached out to MIPS and the University of Maryland to see if they had any response to the criticism.

“The findings from the study conducted by the University of Maryland and funded by the Maryland Industrial Partnerships program are preliminary,” reads a statement from a university spokesperson. “While the study results are promising, university researchers advise that more in-depth studies are required to be conclusive.”

That is true. The press release does include this caution about the need for more research, though it’s worth noting that it comes in the eleventh paragraph of the announcement, and after a headline that make a much more definitive statement: “Concussion-Related Measures Improved in High School Football Players Who Drank New Chocolate Milk, UMD Study Shows.”

We also asked the school it it would be willing to make a copy of the study available, but received no reply on that question.

Criticism of MIPS comes in the immediate wake of the collapse of the Global Energy Balance Network, a Coca-Cola-funded anti-obesity program based at the University of Colorado.

After it was revealed that Coke had provided the funding for GEBN, which downplayed the role of sugary drinks and food in obesity, the organization denied that the soda giant was directly influencing its agenda.

However, subsequently unearthed emails show that Coca-Cola’s active participation in GEBN was “non-negotiable” and that the company viewed the organization as the equivalent of a “political campaign” to “develop, deploy and evolve a powerful and multi-faceted strategy to counter radical organizations and their proponents.”

Police: Shoplifter Bit Off Finger Of Walmart Worker Who Confronted Her For Stealing

by Mary Beth Quirk

(Will)
While it’s surely upsetting to be caught shoplifting, one Walmart shopper accused of trying to steal condoms, lubricant, and underwear took things to an extreme when she allegedly bit off the finger of a store employee who attempted to stop her.

According to police in Myrtle Beach, SC, a 23-year-old woman was confronted by two loss prevention officers as she was leaving the store on Sunday afternoon. The workers had approached her “after they observed her conceal merchandise,” the Smoking Gun reports.

She allegedly fought with the two staffers, punching one woman in the head and causing her to bleed. That’s when, police say, she bit down on one of the worker’s fingers, “causing a portion of [the employee’s] finger to be bitten off.”

Police say she also fought with a shopper who had dropped her phone while dialing 9-1-1, pulling her hair. The shopper allegedly responded by punching the shoplifting suspect in the face.

When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they noticed that a a piece of a finger belonging to the worker was ah, present, and though it was rushed to EMS workers, it “was not able to be reattached.”

The suspect was arrested after police retrieved her from a minivan parked in the parking lot. She’s been charged with aggravated assault, a felony, simple assault, and larceny, and is being held without bond in advance of a court hearing next week.

Ringling Bros. Elephants Being Granted Early Retirement

by Chris Morran

(Rick Drew)
Last March, Feld Entertainment, the parent company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus said they would be retiring all of their elephants by 2018. But today, Feld announced that all the elephants will be done with their circus careers this spring.

The remaining elephants in the Ringling touring company will head to their permanent home at the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation in Florida by May 2016.

“Our company and our family’s commitment to save the majestic Asian elephant will continue through our breeding program, research and conservation efforts at the Center,” says Executive Vice President with Feld Entertainment.

As mentioned last year, the decision to phase out the use of Ringling’s signature pachyderms comes amid both growing public concern about animal rights and increased local regulations on the use of elephants for entertainment purposes. Rather than fight these ordinances, the company realized it was easier to put those resources toward caring for the animals.

10 defining moments in the career of David Bowie

by wtopstaff

LONDON (AP) — It took years of hard work for David Jones to become David Bowie. The aspiring artist was a teen popster, a hippy-ish folkie and a purveyor of novelty records (“The Laughing Gnome,” best forgotten), before emerging from his chrysalis to become one of the most unpredictable and influential figures in music.

Here are 10 defining moments from the career of rock’s greatest chameleon:

1. “Space Oddity” — Bowie first displayed his knack for seizing the zeitgeist with this out-of-this-world track released in 1969, the year of the first moon landing. Beautiful and melancholy, it told the story of astronaut Major Tom, adrift in space, lamenting “Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do.” Real-life astronauts embraced the song, with Cmdr. Chris Hadfield memorably performing it aboard the International Space Station in 2013.

2. “Hunky Dory” — Bowie appeared on the cover of this 1971 album as an androgynous figure with long golden locks — one in an ever-changing array of styles and personas he would adopt and abandon. The songs explored sexual ambiguity, fame, new fatherhood and more. “Changes” was almost a career mission statement, while “Life on Mars,” the tale of a misfit girl and her wild imagination, became one of his most enduring hits and gave its name to a 2006 TV show set in the 70s.

3. Ziggy Stardust — Bowie adopted the persona of the flame-haired alien rock star for his 1972 album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.” A generation of teenagers stopped and stared when the androgynous, seductive character appeared on British TV show “Top of the Pops” performing “Starman.” Ziggy made Bowie a star, but even then he was clear-eyed about the capricious nature of fame and ruthless about moving on: “When the kids had killed the man, we had to break up the band,” he sang on the album’s title track.

4. “Young Americans” — After Bowie killed off Ziggy in 1973, he moved through guises including the edgy Aladdin Sane before going to the United States and immersing himself in the sound of Philadelphia soul. Produced by frequent collaborator Tony Visconti and featuring a roster of funk and soul talent that included guitarist Carlos Alomar and a young Luther Vandross, his 1975 album “Young Americans” was a complete change of pace, and featured the exuberant title track and the acid-tipped dancefloor-filler “Fame,” co-written by John Lennon.

5. “The Man Who Fell to Earth” — Bowie was perfectly cast as an alien adrift in the New Mexico desert in Nicholas Roeg’s 1976 film, which opened up a parallel career path as an actor. He went on to play parts including a World War II prisoner of war in “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” a vampire in “The Hunger,” Pontius Pilate in “The Last Temptation of Christ” and Andy Warhol in “Basquiat.” On Broadway, critics praised him as disfigured Victorian John Merrick in “The Elephant Man” in 1980.

6. “Heroes” — Exhausted by work and too much cocaine, Bowie holed up in West Berlin in 1976, and — working with synth pioneer Brian Eno — produced three of the most remarkable albums of his career. “Low,” ”Heroes” and “Lodger” fused electronic experimentation and Cold War anxiety into a sound that inspired a new crop of musicians. The 1977 single “Heroes,” a defiant shout of love in the face of potential armageddon, became an anthem for a generation.

7. “Ashes to Ashes” — “Ashes to ashes, funk to funky, we know Major Tom’s a junkie”: The first single from Bowie’s 1980 album “Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)” is a bittersweet sequel to “Space Oddity” that Bowie called his epitaph for the 1970s. It also saw him looking to the future and embracing the new art form of music videos, with an eerie clip in which Bowie appeared as a spectral Pierrot alongside figures from London’s emerging New Romantic scene.

8. “Let’s Dance” — Bowie embraced the mainstream — or the mainstream finally caught up with him — in 1983 for one of his biggest albums, considered by many to be the last flourish of his golden period. “Put on your red shoes and dance the blues,” Bowie sang, and the fans obeyed, flocking to shows on a monster North American tour.

9. After a decade of public silence, Bowie took fans and music critics by surprise in 2013 with a new album, “The Next Day.” It saw the musician looking back on songs such as “Where Are We Now,” which referenced his 1970s Berlin days. Fans hoped — in vain — that the new songs meant Bowie might return to live performance.

10. “Blackstar” — Another surprise album was released Jan. 8, Bowie’s 69th birthday — a jazz-inflected journey that saw Bowie continuing to explore new sonic worlds. In the video for the title track, a blindfolded Bowie offered enigmatic incantations on life and death. Two days later, Bowie died aged 69, following a battle with cancer. Music writer Graeme Thomson captured the shock felt by many: “We were so thrilled to have him back, we failed to notice he was saying goodbye,” he tweeted.

Call for supplies as Oregon standoff enters second week

by wtopstaff

BURNS, Ore. (AP) — The occupation of national wildlife area by a small, armed group upset over federal land policies stretched into its second week as the mother of the group’s leader asked supporters to send supplies – everything from warm blankets to coffee creamer.

The group that seized the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon’s high desert country on Jan. 2 planned no media briefings. It was quiet at the entrance to the refuge Sunday.

The leader of the occupation, Ammon Bundy, has repeatedly rejected calls to leave buildings at the refuge despite pleas from the county sheriff, from many local residents and from Oregon’s governor, among others. He has said the group will leave when there is a plan to transfer control of federal land to locals.

So far, the authorities have not moved in to remove Bundy’s group. Ammon Bundy is the son of rancher Cliven Bundy, who was involved in a 2014 Nevada standoff with the government over grazing rights.

On Saturday, Ammon Bundy’s mother, Carol Bundy, sent an email to supporters asking them to send her son’s group supplies from a list of more than 80 items, including sleeping bags, wool socks, cigarettes, toiletries, food, coffee and “French Vanilla Creamer.”

An Oregon state legislator met with the group on Saturday, despite requests from local officials that he not do so.

Rep. Dallas Heard, a Republican from Roseburg, talked with the group, The Oregonian reported (http://bit.ly/1kYvDYV). Heard’s legislative district is in western Oregon, outside the area where the standoff is occurring. Rep. Cliff Bentz, the Republican state representative whose district includes the wildlife refuge, told Heard not to come because it would be “inappropriate.”

Harney County Judge Steven Grasty, another local official, says he too advised Bentz against the visit. Grasty said Bentz and five other out-of-state elected officials from Washington, Idaho and Nevada accompanied Heard. It wasn’t clear who the other elected officials were. Heard did not return a call Sunday from The Associated Press.

Also Saturday a separate group of armed men arrived but left several hours later after occupation leaders told them they weren’t needed.

The Pacific Patriot Network showed up Saturday in a convoy of about 18 vehicles, carrying rifles and handguns and dressed in military attire and bulletproof vests. They said they were there to help with security. They departed the refuge area after LaVoy Finicum said the network’s help was appreciated, but “we want the long guns put away.”

The standoff is the latest flare up of tensions over federal management of Western lands.

The federal government manages most of the land in many Western states, including 53 percent of Oregon. While ranchers and others object to what they say are unfair rules, environmentalists say mining, logging and ranching have run roughshod for decades on public land and left a legacy of pollution for taxpayers to clean up.

New Yorkers, others on public transit strip to underwear

by wtopstaff

NEW YORK (AP) — Thousands of New Yorkers thought it was a hot thing Sunday to strip to their underwear during winter and ride on public transportation, along with pantless crowds in about 60 countries.

“I’m a no-pant virgin,” declared a grinning Miguel Ramos amid New York’s No Pants Subway Ride. It was the Mexican-born restaurant worker’s first foray into the “international celebration of silliness,” as organizers billed it.

The laughter-filled ritual started in the largest U.S. city in 2002 and has expanded nationwide and overseas, from Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas to London, Berlin, Prague and Vienna.

It’s coordinated by Improv Everywhere, a global flash mob.

New York participants were assigned personal numbers for central gathering spots in each city borough. “And then at, say, the third stop in Brooklyn, you take off your pants in the train,” explained Latesha Mack, who made it to Manhattan’s Union Square station in fishnet stockings below her panties. “So it’s not like, a bunch of people on one train with no pants.”

While most clothed straphangers weaved their way through bare flesh, some were left shocked.

A tall, elegant man — totally clothed — stopped in his tracks as he entered the station.

“I asked the police, ‘What’s going on?’ and he said, ‘It’s no pants day,'” said Manhattan entrepreneur Mark Francis. “And I said, ‘what?'”

The cop told him it was a “tradition.” More than 4,000 New Yorkers participated.

In Phoenix, Arizona, the city’s light rail system party included a pants-less outing to a pub.

Nicole Black brought her Superman underwear from 40 miles away for “a day off to have fun and enjoy and see what Phoenix has to offer” — including temperatures in the 50s making the attire reasonably comfortable.

Boston also enjoyed spring-like weather, with rain causing some riders to wipe the drops off their legs as they boarded trains.

Even families took part everywhere, carrying babies bared to their diapers.

And a Berlin woman had a cat’s face splashed across her — well, cheeks.

At a London station, coats and scarves warded off the chill — at least from the waist up.

Then there were the once shy types.

Bill Murphy, a New York translator, said he didn’t realize he had certain talents until Sunday — wearing only a red bikini as he burst out gyrating amid the Union Square station crowd.

“I’m 56 and I’m kind of proud of myself. At a senior age, it’s supposed to be not acceptable, but I want to change the perception of that: I’ve become an exhibitionist today,” he said.

Playboy Mansion for sale but Hugh Hefner wants to stay put

by wtopstaff

LOS ANGELES (AP) — For $200 million, the Playboy Mansion, where risque parties have raged for decades, could be yours.

But you might want to think twice if you’re aiming to close escrow on the famous property that went on the market Monday and move in quickly, since Playboy Magazine founder and party master Hugh Hefner has often said he will never live anywhere else.

“A condition on the sale would be that Mr. Hefner be able to continue to work and live in the residence,” Playboy spokesman John Vlautin said.

Negotiations between the seller and buyer would determine whether the 89-year-old playboy stays for free or rents the place back.

The 5-acre property in Los Angeles’ exclusive Holmby Hills has seen thousands of celebrities and beautiful women pass through its doors.

It features 29 rooms, game house, home theater, wine cellar, gym, tennis court, swimming pool and four-bedroom guest house. It also comes with the notorious cave-like grotto where Playboy bunnies have long frolicked with guests.

Still, potential buyers have to ask if the two-story Gothic-Tudor home built in 1927 is worth $200 million, particularly when a 7-acre estate nearby sold last year for $59 million?

“Maybe $90 million. But $200 million? That’s absurd,” said Realtor Rory Barish, who has sold numerous properties in the area.

“But he can ask whatever he wants and there could be one freak out there, a trillionaire, who comes and says, ‘I have to have it,'” Barish quickly added.

High-profile Hollywood publicist Michael Levine, who has been to the mansion dozens of times, dismissed its price tag as preposterous.

“But there’s no downside to Playboy in creating a press release that says $200 million,” he added with a chuckle, noting that its party reputation could boost its value by a few million.

Playboy Enterprises appears to be counting on that.

“This is the right time to seek a buyer for this incredible property who understands the role the mansion has played for our brand and enables us to continue to reinvest in the transformation of our business,” Playboy Enterprises CEO Scott Flanders said.

Generations of celebrities have been guests at wild parties at the mansion.

“What is it like to go from unfancied teen thesp to object of lust for America’s hottest models at one of Hugh Hefner’s parties? Well, awesome, obviously,” Rob Lowe, describing his first visit to the mansion, wrote in Esquire magazine two years ago.

In a moment not of lust but anger, frequent mansion guest Bill Cosby sucker punched comedian Tommy Smothers at a 1976 party, according to Ronald L. Smith’s book, “Cosby: The Life of a Comedy Legend.'”

At least four women have accused Cosby of sexually assaulting them at the mansion. Two are suing him.

Hefner married his second wife, Playmate of the Year Kimberly Conrad, in a televised ceremony by the mansion’s fountain in 1989. For a time, when the couple’s two sons were young, visitors could see their toys in upstairs windows.

More recently word has surfaced that the mansion, just a year younger than its owner, is showing its age.

Former Hefner girlfriend Izabella St. James complained in 2006 that the frequent visitors and Hefner’s penchant for letting his pet dogs relieve themselves wherever they wanted had soiled the carpets.

“It’s not a house that has been kept up maybe as well as it could or should have been,” said Levine, who added he hasn’t been there in about five years.

Dozens of Detroit schools close due to teacher protest

by wtopstaff

DETROIT (AP) — A wave of teacher absences described by an activist as “rolling strikes” shut down more than half of Detroit’s 100 public schools Monday, keeping thousands of students at home as a so-called sick-out entered a second week.

A handful of high schools were forced to close last week due to teachers calling in sick to protest their pay and call for smaller class sizes. But the action Monday was more dramatic as more teachers stayed home, prompting Mayor Mike Duggan to urge the teachers to return to work.

“I understand the teachers’ frustration, but our children need our teachers in the classroom,” Duggan said in a release. “I encourage the teachers to end the sick-outs and remain in the schools, and I encourage our state officials to move quickly to address these pressing educational problems.”

Unlike some cities, Detroit’s mayor has no control over the public schools. Detroit’s debt-ridden district of 46,000 students has been under state oversight for nearly seven years. The district, which has about $500 million in debt, poor morale among staff and families with other school options, is run by an emergency manager appointed by Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

Lawmakers “must act with urgency to address the problem,” Duggan said.

Snyder has called for the state to commit $715 million over a decade to address the debt and relaunch the district under a new name. The plan includes a reorganization that could lead to closing independent, publicly funded charter schools, where more than half of Detroit students are enrolled. However, Snyder’s plan has yet to receive support in the Legislature — including from fellow Republicans.

A teacher and former union president, Steve Conn, said the shutdowns were “great.” He warned the district Sunday that parents needed to be notified about the “rolling strikes.”

The teachers’ union, the Detroit Federation of Teachers is not part of the sick-out. But union officials complained Monday about conditions in the schools.

Interim President Ivy Bailey displayed photos of mold in schools. Teachers also said they are dealing with rat and mouse infestations, overcrowded classrooms and supply shortages.

“This is why those sick-outs happened,” Bailey told reporters.

The district’s emergency manager, Darnell Earley, said in a statement that officials “understand and share” the frustrations of teachers but that the teacher absences make it “more challenging” to reach a political solution with state lawmakers.

State schools Superintendent Brian Whiston said he has scheduled a meeting with Earley to discuss health and safety concerns brought up by the teachers’ union. Whiston did not say when the meeting would take place.

Duggan plans to visit some schools Tuesday with the heads of the city’s health and buildings departments to make sure the buildings comply with city codes.

Riders go pantless on Metro for ‘No Pants Subway Ride’

by Dick Uliano

WASHINGTON — If passengers had kept their SmarTrip cards in their pants pocket, they wouldn’t have been able to board Metro Sunday afternoon, because they weren’t wearing any pants. It was “No Pants Subway Ride” on Metro — a worldwide event, wherever people cared to leave their pants at home and ride public transit.

Of course, many shared pictures of their adventures on social media.

“I hate wearing pants, I never wear them. I’m a nudist by trade so if I could walk around every day like this I would,” says Faith Senz of Baltimore, who definitely attracted attention in a pink tank top and black panties.

Not everyone who holds the vertical poles on moving Metro cars does it quite like Faith.

“We’re also pole dancers so we were doing some tricks out on the Metro,” Senz says.

The riders without pants say they did it because it’s fun.

“It’s just a fun event, it’s something that’s done all over the world, in every major city with a Metro basically,” says Masha Maister, visiting from New Jersey.

Maister was perfectly matched — sensible black pumps, maroon knit shirt, pink scarf … and no pants.

“It’s working great, nice breeze which I really like, the breeze is really great,” Maister says.

Those without pants say it’s not so hard to leave home in your undies and saunter over to the Metro station.

“Once you do it, the fear of being embarrassed, am I going to be the only one, all goes away as soon as everyone else joins in,” says Andrew Bossi of D.C.

More than a dozen a riders in their undies rode Metro.

The meat of the matter: How Congress’ repeal of meat labels impacts consumers

by Rachel Nania

WASHINGTON — For the past seven years, Congress has required a label on all beef and pork sold in the U.S. to let consumers know where the animal was born, raised and processed.

Last week, that law was taken to slaughter.

After pressure from the World Trade Organization and threats of retaliation from Mexico and Canada, Congress repealed the labeling law, which many argue leaves consumers in the dark when it comes to knowing the source of their food.

“At this point, we’ve just taken the ability for a consumer to be able to make a choice for them and their family,” says Mary Carter, managing partner at D.C.’s Founding Farmers, a restaurant that espoused farm-to-table, long before it was a buzzword.

“We’ve basically taken education away from people who want it. So now, consumers have no chance to make a choice, unless they absolutely have a relationship like we do with our vendors.”

Congress originally passed the law in 2002 amid fears of mad cow disease from imported cattle. However, most labels didn’t make it on meat packages until 2009 due to delays from the meat industry, The Associated Press reports.

The repeal comes at a time of heightened consumer interest in food transparency. The number of farmers markets have more than doubled in the past 10 years, sales of organic food topped $39.1 billion in 2014 and Vermont is pushing to require labeling of all genetically modified food.

Danielle Vogel, owner of Glen’s Garden Market, says she’s witnessed this interest, firsthand.

“People care what they’re putting in their bodies increasingly, which includes not only wanting to know where their food comes from, but also wanting to know what’s in it, wanting to be able to pronounce the ingredients on the label — or, even better, wanting to have foods that are only a couple of ingredients,” says Vogel, who sells food grown or created within the states of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Nathan Anda, of Red Apron Butcher, echoes Vogel’s observations. When he first opened Red Apron in 2013, he received some initial pushback from customers on pricing. But that quickly changed when he explained his approach to sourcing.

“We could easily work with vendors that could get us better-priced beef and sell it and not be able to answer all the questions that people ask,” Anda says.

But he doesn’t. Anda works closely with a growing co-op, comprised of eight to 10 farmers, who raise his pigs, as well as a hog farmer in Roanoke who raises heritage hogs.

Founding Farmers’ Carter says the repeal will hurt these small farmers and providers the most.

“It hurts the United States farmers, because if you can buy less expensive cattle from Mexico or Argentina or China, that’s going to drive down the price for the cattle that’s here,” she says.

“Being a cattle farmer or any farmer is hard work, and we just keep taking those jobs away and hurting our country when we do things like that.”

Carter predicts Congress’ repeal will likely drive more business to grocery stores and markets that commit to uphold labeling, even in the absence of a law.

“They’re going to be more in demand because people are going to say, ‘Hey, I have to buy from somebody that I trust and that does label their food and that I know has this relationship with the farmers,’” Carter says.

At the same time, she says it creates a disparity for those who may not have access to specialty vendors.

“A lot of people don’t have the means to be able to go above and beyond to make better choices for themselves. They’re stuck at times with the few limited choices that they have in front of them, so to take the education piece away from them, I just think is negligent,” Carter says.

The repeal of the labels no doubt impacts everyday consumers, but it also affects the restaurant industry — especially those who are transparent about the ingredients they source.

Carter says few things will change for Founding Farmers and its sister restaurant Farmers Fishers Bakers, since the core of their mission is to source their meat from trusted farmers, with whom they have long-standing relationships.

However, that’s not to say other restaurant groups will be able to maintain the same amount of control with the meat they purchase and serve. Carter explains that it takes a lot of money for slaughterhouses to set up facilities that can guarantee traceability of an animal.

Why does knowing the source of the meat matter? Vogel says that depends on your personal concerns.

“If it’s animal welfare, it’s important to know who’s raising your meat,” Vogel says. “If it’s environmental degradation, you don’t want to be buying from one of these huge meat lots; they’re terrible for land, air and water quality, and they’re not likely to be fantastic for the animals growing up there either.”

Vogel has some tips for the next time you are standing in front of the meat refrigerators at your grocery store or market and are struggling with the selection. First of all, she says don’t fall victim to jargon. For example, if country of origin is your priority, organic, grass-fed and free-range aren’t necessarily going to get you what you want.

“What I would recommend is looking up the farms where the meat is coming from, and beyond that, looking for stories debunking their own claims about themselves,” Vogel says. “This law will encourage people to be more mindful of where they’re buying meat.”

Anda recommends taking a trip to your farmers market and speaking directly with the person raising the meat.

“The way the farmers markets have grown, and the amount of proteins that are sold at farmers markets — they’re not just for fresh vegetables anymore. People want to go and get a farm-raised animal,” he says.

Carter says asking your store’s butcher is another way to get more information on the products being sold.

“We have great beef in America, and I just wish the American consumers could know,” she says. “It’s always just such a sad day when we take education away from our people.”

Muslim woman thrown out of Trump rally; group seeks apology

by wtopstaff

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — An advocacy group is seeking an apology from GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign after a Muslim woman standing in silent protest was heckled and the escorted out of the event.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations issued the call for an apology late Friday, hours after Rose Hamid was thrown out of the Trump rally at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Hamid said she was standing up in protest to a Trump statement when members of the audience pointed her out by chanting “Trump, Trump, Trump.”

CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad also called on Trump to meet with American Muslim leaders to help stem the anti-Muslim hysteria resulting from his rhetoric and that of other GOP presidential candidates.

Things to know: The armed standoff in Oregon

by wtopstaff

BURNS, Ore. (AP) — A small, armed group has been occupying a remote national wildlife refuge in Oregon for a week to protest federal land use policies.

The leader of the group — Ammon Bundy — has repeatedly rejected calls to leave buildings at the refuge despite pleas from the county sheriff, from many local residents, and from Oregon’s governor, among others. The standoff is a battle of wills between Bundy and Harney County Sheriff David Ward, who has become the public face of efforts by federal, state and local law officials to end the occupation peacefully. Bundy — who is not an Oregonian — insists he speaks for the interests of Harney County residents. But Ward says the community wants him to go.

HOW DID THIS START?

The group seized buildings at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on Jan. 2 following a peaceful rally in support of two Oregon ranchers facing additional prison time for convictions of arson. The group says the case of the father-and-son ranchers, Dwight and Steve Hammond, is emblematic of onerous federal land use policies that make it difficult for ranchers, loggers and others in the West.

EXACTLY WHO IS OCCUPYING THE REFUGE?

The group calls itself Citizens for Constitutional Freedom. Ammon Bundy hasn’t provided exact numbers but it’s believed there are about two dozen people involved – some from as far away as Arizona and Michigan. Ammon Bundy is one of the sons of rancher Cliven Bundy, who was involved in a 2014 Nevada standoff with the government over grazing rights. Ammon Bundy says they will leave when there’s a plan in place to turn over federal lands to locals.

WHAT ARE THE AUTHORITIES DOING AND HOW ARE LOCALS REACTING?

Federal and local officials have not moved to oust the group or arrest them. Harney County Sheriff David Ward met Thursday with Bundy. He has said the group needs to go so locals can get back to their lives. While some in the local community are sympathetic to Bundy’s group, Ward was cheered at a packed community meeting in Burns, Oregon, on Wednesday evening when he said the group needed to leave.

WHY IS LAND USE SUCH A HOT TOPIC IN THE WEST?

The federal government manages most of the land in many Western states. It owns 85 percent of Nevada, 66 percent of Utah, 62 percent of both Idaho and Alaska, and 53 percent of Oregon. While ranchers and others object to what they say are unfair rules, environmentalists say mining, logging and ranching have run roughshod for decades on public land and left a legacy of pollution for taxpayers to clean up.

WHO ARE THE HAMMONDS?

Dwight Hammond and his son Steven Hammond have distanced themselves from Bundy’s group and reported to prison Monday. The Hammonds were convicted of arson three years ago and served no more than a year. A judge later ruled that the terms fell short of minimum sentences requiring them to serve about four more years. Federal officials repeatedly accused the ranchers of breaking environmental laws and declining to follow rules. Over the years, officials refused to renew some of the family’s grazing allotments and increased fees on others. They also restricted access to water sources used by the Hammonds. In the local community neighbors described them as kind and generous, supporting charitable causes.

WHERE IS THIS HEADED?

That’s anybody’s guess. The strategy of law enforcement seems to be to show Bundy and his followers that most local residents want them to leave, and that way avoid a confrontation. With the Hammonds voluntarily going to prison, Bundy’s end-game is not clear. He has been using the occupation to speak out for more local control of public lands. Bundy said Friday that at some point he will accept Sheriff Ward’s offer of an escort out of the refuge to assure safe passage. Bundy also floated the idea of “transferring what we are doing” to a group local of supporters. On Saturday, a convoy of more than a dozen pickup trucks carrying armed men arrived at the wildlife refuge. Some of the men carrying rifles told journalists they were there to help with security, The Oregonian reported.

4 teens in custody in alleged group rape at NYC playground

by wtopstaff

NEW YORK (AP) — Four teenagers were taken into police custody in connection with an alleged group rape of an 18-year-old woman at a Brooklyn playground, an incident that the mayor called a “horrific attack.”

Police said Sunday two teenagers surrendered and two were apprehended. Charges were pending against a 14-year-old, 17-year-old and two 15-year-olds. A fifth suspect is still being sought.

Authorities said the woman was accosted just after 9 p.m. Thursday as she and her father walked inside Osborn Playground in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn.

Police said there were five suspects, and one pointed a gun at the father and told him to leave. Each man raped the woman, police said. The father returned with two police officers, but the attackers fled.

The woman was treated at Kings County Hospital and released.

“I am disgusted and deeply saddened by the horrific attack,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement released Sunday.

He added, “Every New Yorker in every neighborhood deserves to feel safe and protected, and we will not stop until the perpetrators of this disturbing attack are held accountable for their actions.”

Elected officials, residents and activists spoke out against the alleged assault on Sunday, offering a reward for information leading to an arrest.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams released a statement saying he was “sickened” by reports of the attack and called on the New York Police Department to conduct a full investigation “not only to identify all those responsible for this horrific attack, but also to determine if everything possible was done to protect the victim and the public.”

An NYPD police spokesman said there was no delay in the police response.

“A patrol car from the 73rd Precinct was approached on the street and told about the attack by the victim’s father, who directed the officers to the scene,” police spokesman Stephen Davis said.

“The police officers immediately responded and located the victim,” Davis said. “The suspects had already fled.”

Adams on Sunday also questioned why the police waited until Saturday night, 48 hours later, to alert the public of the crime when it released surveillance video they said showed the men in a bodega before the alleged incident.

Davis said the commanding officer of the precinct began contacting local community leaders about the alleged rape on Friday.

Dogs seized from Rockville home prepared for adoption (Video)

by Omama Altaleb

WASHINGTON — The Animal Services Division seized 66 dogs from a Rockville, Maryland home on New Year’s Day following a dog bite investigation the day before, and now, shelter officials say some of the dogs are ready for adoption.

The dogs were being kept at a residence in the 13000 block of Glen Mill Road before police executed a search warrant.  All 66 dogs were taken to the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center in Derwood, Maryland.

The shelter assessed the dogs’ health, behavior and needs, according to a press release. Some dogs required medical treatment, baths and extreme grooming, shelter staff say. Among those, three of the dogs were euthanized because of painful and severe medical conditions.

The shelter’s staff say they expect half of the dogs to go regional shelters or local rescue partners.

The case is still under investigation. No charges have been filed.

University dean suing Rolling Stone seeks text messages

by wtopstaff

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Lawyers for a University of Virginia dean who’s suing Rolling Stone magazine are asking a judge to force the subject of a debunked article about an alleged gang rape on campus to reveal text messages and other communications in the case, saying it would expose the woman as a “serial liar.”

Attorneys for Associate Dean Nicole Eramo, who’s seeking more than $7.5 million in damages from the magazine, said in recent court filings that the woman referred to only as “Jackie” in the November 2014 article should have to turn over the documents because there’s no evidence that the alleged assault occurred, The Richmond Times Dispatch reports (bit.ly/1RssyiB).

That would “require Jackie to admit that her concern is not being outed as a victim of sexual assault, but rather being exposed as a serial liar who invented people, events and text messages,” attorneys for Eramo wrote.

Eramo sued Rolling Stone in May, saying she was cast as the “chief villain” in the discredited piece in her role as the top administrator dealing with sexual assaults at the Charlottesville school.

An investigation by Charlottesville police found no evidence to back up Jackie’s claims that she had been raped by seven men at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house in September 2012. Rolling Stone retracted the article and the magazine’s managing editor and article’s author both apologized.

Eramo’s attorneys said they want Jackie to hand over her communications with the associate dean, other university officials and the magazine’s author, among other things.

Jackie’s lawyers blasted Eramo in court documents, saying Jackie shouldn’t have to disclose private information because she’s not a party to the lawsuit and should be protected as a victim of an alleged sexual assault.

“What is tragic about this case is that Dean Eramo apparently believes she can rehabilitate her reputation by attacking a student she herself counseled and whom she referred to support groups and additional counseling following her report of sexual assault,” the woman’s attorneys wrote.

The National Organization for Woman has called on University President Teresa Sullivan to intervene and put a stop to what they call the “re-victimization” of Jackie.

“Your dean’s demands recite nearly every false argument made to undermine victims of sexual assault. It is exactly this kind of victim blaming and shaming that fosters rape culture, re-victimizes those brave enough to come forward, and silences countless other victims,” NOW President Terry O’Neill said in a letter to Sullivan.

University officials declined to comment.

Samuel Bayard, an attorney for Rolling Stone, said via email that he could not comment on the case.
