As a thirty-eight year old professional woman in big-city Los Angeles, I knew a lot about life. What I hadn’t learned was how to end a relationship with a boyfriend I was no longer attracted to. It dragged on and on. When we finally broke up I felt malnourished where it counted – in my pussy. I promised myself, “never again.” Never again would I sacrifice this important part of myself.

With this resolve, I revised a list I’d been keeping in my mind for a long time – my sexual bucket list. I was committed to adventure and experimentation. I even went to an S&M dungeon here in L.A. called The Sanctuary. I saw spanking; I witnessed bondage. And on my way home from the club, I began feeling this nagging need for something. That week, I posted an ad on a website called Bondage.com seeking a dominant man.

I received messages from several guys who obviously didn’t take the time to read my profile. A few seemed to be cutting and pasting the same blurb to every woman on the site. Then I got a note from a man named Zack. Here’s what he said:

Just wanted to say that what you wrote in your profile intrigued me to say the least – the balance of curiosity, and intelligence – lovely, really. Usually I don’t reach out to those without photos, but I felt your “voice” comes through loud and clear, and perhaps that’s what attracts me the most. I like women who can express themselves, as you clearly can.

What to share of myself on this fine evening? Well, I paint as a hobby. L.A. provides lots of inspiration for that. It’s a fun outlet and I’m pretty good, if I say so myself. I’m an Art Director in the movie biz. Went camping on the Kern River last weekend with some good friends. Cooked, floated, sipped whiskey, and watched the sun go down.

Been in the scene for years. Very experienced. I respect limits. I enjoy guiding. Would love to chat more if I seem at all interesting to you.

I liked everything about this guy’s approach. Zack and I met on a Sunday afternoon at a Starbucks in Brentwood. He was six feet tall with dark hair and beautiful brown eyes. My first impression was his hearty laugh – warm and deep. First, we talked about life. This is how I found out that his grandfather was an Orthodox Jew who left the faith and married a Chinese schoolteacher. That would explain Zack’s sexy, almond shaped eyes.

Then we talked about his art – he pulled out his iPhone and swiped through a gallery full of exquisite photography from Burning Man – I was impressed. He switched to another folder of family photos. He showed me an ancient black and white of his grandfather – who looked a lot like the forbidding, bearded Jewish men in my own family. It felt strange to find this commonality with Zack given what had brought us together that day.

Finally we talked about the kinky interests we had in common. “I like to go deep,” he said, and I became really curious what he meant.

“Would you like to experience a scene with me?” he asked.
“Yes.” I never felt surer about anything.

“Good,” he answered. “What would you like your safe word to be?”

“Safe word,” I responded. “That’s what I say if I want you to stop doing what you’re doing, right?”

“Correct. Many people go for yellow and red like the traffic lights. Yellow means slow down and red means stop.”

I’ve learned since then that there were many words I might say to protest like “Ouch,” “I hate this,” “Stop,” “No,” or “Fuck you,” without actually wanting it to end. So a safe word helps your partner know you really, really mean it.

“That sounds fine,” I told him. “And I’ll set a silent alarm.”

“Great,” he answered. “I’m glad.”

I learned about silent alarms from the book SM101, which I found on Amazon. A silent alarm is for people who want to play together – but don’t know each other well. It’s a safety precaution. My friend Julie will know where I am and what I’m doing. She’ll have Zack’s phone number and address with explicit instructions that if she doesn’t hear from me by a certain time, then something may be wrong. She should try to contact me and if I’m still not responding, she should call the police and give them his address. Zack knew the drill.

“So, may I call you names?” he asked.

“Like what?”

“Slut. Whore.”

I got very quiet and then nodded. Yes.

“May I blindfold you?” he asked.

Another nod.

“Okay.” He said. “Saturday night, my place at 8:00pm. Exactly 8:00pm. Do you understand?

I took all the time I could ever need to get ready, arrived twenty minutes early and parked. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw my eyes shining back at me – happy. My lipstick was on just right and the wind was going through the trees just right. There was nowhere in the world I’d rather be.

Zack opened the door and I gasped at my first glance at his amazing place. There were hardwood floors, books from floor to ceiling, bright, passionate artwork and a blown glass chandelier that looked like an octopus. Zack had romantic candles lit and red wine and finger food at the ready. I asked him questions about the people in the photos on his fridge. On the surface, we were twenty minutes into an awesome date. Underneath I wondered when the actual “scene” might begin. Zack was seated in his red leather chair.

“I want you to come over here,” he said.

I walked over and stopped a few feet in front of him. “Closer. Let’s see what we have here.”

He ran his fingers along my leg from my knee to my inner thigh. Like he owned me.

“Mmm, nice,” he said.

He stood up, took my black, silk scarf from around my neck and covered my eyes with it.

“Lights out,” he said gently, as he knotted the scarf behind my neck. “Now undress completely.”

What am I getting myself into? Why am I so turned on? I knew only one thing for sure: I wanted to please him. I undressed as fast as I could – dress over my head, heels off, bra snapped and panties peeled away. I couldn’t tell what his reaction was. It was quiet for a few seconds while I stood there, exposed, waiting.

“Kneel on the ground,” he ordered. It sounded from his voice that he may be smiling. Was he laughing at me?

“Fold your clothes, don’t be messy,” he said. Now I knew he was teasing me. I reached around myself with both hands hoping to locate my things. He was watching me make a mess of it.

“Crawl to the bed,” he said.

I felt my face redden, but only asked, “Where’s the bed?”

“Oh, I’ll show you.”

He gathered my tousled, brown hair in one of his fists and dragged me along on my hands and knees. It was a strange, sweet humiliation that even now I can’t explain. In a small chamber of my brain, I noticed he pulled only as fast as I could make my way across the floor.

He told me to kneel and wait. I knew I was somewhere in his home on the hardwood floor, but that was about it. I felt a cushion placed beside me. That was familiar. I used this cushion as a temporary home for myself – an anchor. I had slipped into another dimension. In the BDSM community, this dimension had a name. It’s called submissive-space. Sub space felt like a five hundred pound weight was lifted off of me that I didn’t even know was there. Like I had waited my whole life to be told to kneel and wait. Freedom, presence, bliss. Any worry I’d ever had about pleasing the other person – whose turn was it to do what? Was I doing this right – was gone. I had nothing to do but obey.

Zack told me to follow his voice the rest of the way. He was enjoying this game. I had never realized before how hard crawling was. The floor was unforgiving as I made my way down the long hallway. At last, I reached the foot of a bed. He directed me to climb up and pose for him on my hands and knees. My feeling of exposure and embarrassment escalated.

Zack left the room. I felt like a jackass – posing, alone. But he might return at any moment so I stayed, dutiful. I heard rummaging sounds in another room and then louder rummaging sounds. Then there was a clink of metal on metal. What was that clinky thing? Was it intended for me?

Silence.

“Ooh!” I was struck on the behind with something made of leather. And again. And then again, faster and faster. The sensation was a kaleidoscope of sound, impact and adrenaline. And there I was in the center of the storm. I felt like an Amazon – taking it all.

After a bunch more whacks, he told me, “Count them. And you’d better be cordial about it.”

“One, thank you, Sir. Two, thank you Sir.”

At seventeen, I didn’t know how much more I could take. He paused and said, “You are so fucking sexy,” He reached between my legs to touch my pussy. I couldn’t hide how turned on I was.

“What kind of woman gets wet from being stripped and flogged?” he asked.
“Your kind,” I breathed.

“Get on your back,” he told me. “You’ve been very good, I’m going to give you a treat.”

I complied with alacrity. His tongue on my clit was sure and fast. His finger inside me was firm and slow. The combination took me over. I heard my voice – throaty – I’d never heard myself like that before. I was turning inside out. Tears. I heard myself say, “thank you!” and then “Thank you thank you thank you!”

Then I laughed, still blindfolded, this orgasm kept going and going. I reached between my legs to find his face, to connect with He who had just finger-fucked and mind-fucked me so thoroughly.

He lifted my scarf above my eyes. He was still in his black jeans and t-shirt, lying down, propped on one arm, smiling at my face. I wriggled closer to him, content.

“You were so much fun.” He said, “I’d like to see you again sometime, would you like that?”

I could only nod Yes. Words had not yet returned.

“Now hug me as hard as you can then turn around so I can spoon you.”

I was grateful to have a few more precious, nonverbal minutes to float in this new mental world He’d shown me. His arms around me felt like a safety belt. Bliss.

Sixty minutes later I was dressed and outside Zack’s door. I texted Julie: I’m safe. Heading home.

Julie wrote back: How are you?

I thought about it for a long time.

Changed.

UVa has new frat, sorority rules after alleged-rape story

by wtopstaff

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Fraternities at the University of Virginia can get their parties started again with the blessing of the school’s president after a semester of blistering criticism over campus sex assaults.

Greek organizations have until Jan. 16 to agree to new drinking rules as a condition for ending a temporary ban on social activities, which UVa. President Teresa A. Sullivan imposed following a November Rolling Stone article describing a campus culture that fosters violence against women.

That article — which focused on an alleged gang rape at a fraternity house in 2012 — was later discredited by the magazine’s editors, but campus and fraternity leaders have been under pressure nonetheless propose reforms.

The new rules were proposed by the fraternities and approved by Sullivan. Among them: Kegs of beer and pre-made mixes of liquor and punch will be banned; beer must be served in closed cans, and “wine may be served upon request, poured visibly at the bar by a sober brother.”

The university also is taking other measures including opening a police substation near off-campus bars, improving the university’s lighting and camera system, and hiring additional counselors and trauma experts.

“I believe the new safety measures recommended by the student leaders in the Greek community will help provide a safer environment for their members and guests,” Sullivan said in a statement late Tuesday.

Organizations representing sororities also agreed to safety measures, such as “bystander intervention training” for new members.

Most of the rules are aimed at making it easier for students to know how much alcohol they’re consuming and more difficult for someone to slip incapacitating drugs into the drinks of unsuspecting guests.

“Even an alert and careful student who tries the sweet-tasting cocktail containing many types of liquor cannot know how much alcohol it contains,” Sullivan told students in December. “Yet another problem with alcohol is that it can be the vehicle for some other drug to be ingested, unknown to the drinker. Let’s call this by its name: This is poisoning.”

The Intra-Fraternity Council said in an addendum that “these changes are not comprehensive — nor do they claim to be.”

“We seek to achieve a safe environment at fraternity events by addressing high-risk drinking, sexual misconduct, and unhealthy power structures,” the addendum says. “We submit these reforms as the next step in the IFC’s commitment to guaranteeing a baseline of safety for fraternity members and our guests.”

The spring semester begins Monday, with Greek social events to recruit new members starting shortly thereafter.

There is also no mention of underage drinking or how to prevent it in the agreement. Sullivan has previously said about that half of the incoming students already drink when they arrive on campus, the vast majority of them too young to do it legally.

Other rules call for at least three sober fraternity brothers to monitor alcohol distribution and the stairways to residential rooms at each party. At large parties, a hired security guard must monitor entrances, keeping out anyone not on a printed guest list. Fraternities will also be required to have bottled water and food available.

The rules were slammed on the school newspaper’s website Wednesday as either the beginning of the end for Greek social life, or far too weak to prevent sexual assaults. Some said Sullivan should apologize to fraternities, while others said she should have been far more forceful. One writer said “none of these new rules are enforceable in any practical sense.”

Fraternity houses are privately owned and the new rules make no mention of independent or university-provided monitors. “Fraternities are accountable to themselves, and there will be a monitoring system administered by the IFC,” the council’s president, Tommy Reid told The Cavalier Daily.

“Should violations be brought to the University’s attention … the Dean of Students Office will investigate, and any appropriate next steps would be based upon the details of each case,” in accordance with the law, UVa. spokesman Anthony P. de Bruyn said in an email to The Associated Press.

Pet of the Week: Brad

by Rachel Nania

WASHINGTON —  Meet Brad. No, not Brad Pit, or Brad Paisley or even Brad Johnson. Just Brad.

This adorable American Staffordshire terrier mix arrived at the Washington Animal Rescue League with his littermates in early December. Several of the puppies began showing signs of Parvovirus almost immediately so the entire litter, including Brad, spent several weeks in quarantine.

Now, at 3 months old and with a clean bill of health, Brad and his brothers and sisters are looking to begin the new year with new lives in loving homes.

Like most puppies, Brad has lots of energy and will do best with a family willing and able to give him plenty of exercise, guidance and training. WARL’s Puppy K class is a great way to begin the process. (The 6-week, open-enrollment session is available to puppies adopted from WARL for just $75.)

About WARL: Founded in 1914, the Washington Animal Rescue League is the oldest animal shelter in Washington D.C. Its mission includes rescuing, rehabilitating and finding homes for animals who have no where else to go. The League also supports animals through affordable veterinary care, community outreach and education. Learn more about the Washington Animal Rescue League at www.warl.org.

Va. transportation department turning roadkill into compost

by wtopstaff

WINDSOR, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Department of Transportation is working to turn highway carcasses into plant food.

The state agency is testing the practice of turning roadkill into compost at four sites across the state, using a special system that accelerates decomposition and suppresses odors.

The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1wpT391 ) reports the system costs $140,000 and can break down animals in as little as six weeks in concrete bins.

The compost is then used to control erosion and help establish grass after construction.

Officials say roadkill collected by the agency is traditionally buried or driven to landfills at a cost of $4 million a year for disposal.

Several other states already have widespread programs to compost roadkill.

“Ansel Adams” Bill Wants To Make It (Extra) Legal To Take Photos In All Federal Spaces Open To The Public

by Mary Beth Quirk

UPDATE: Consumerist reader Bob, who tipped us off to the Ansel Adams bill in the first place, writes in to point out a bit of a glitch that could cause trouble already for the newborn bit of legislation.

As noted by a tipster to the blog The Online Photographer, Rep. Stockman’s last day in office was Jan. 3, the day after the bill’s introduction. Jan. 6 was the first day of the 114th Congress.

“So the bill either needs to be reintroduced by someone else in the new Congress or it’s already dead, since bills cannot be carried over from one Congress to the next prior to being signed into law,” the tipster writes.

If it is resubmitted by someone else, it will then be considered a new bill.

————–ORIGINAL STORY BELOW—————–

A new bill dubbed the “Ansel Adams Act” introduced recently in Congress wants to make sure it’s just as legal to snap a photo of a federal building as it is to glance at one on the street. The bill sponsored by Rep. Steve Stockman of Texas introduced on Jan. 2 is headed “To restore the First Amendment Rights of Photographers.”

Though it is already legal to take photos in public spaces owned by the feds, the bill says that in recent years, the federal government has put regulations into place that “prohibit or restrict photography in National Parks, public spaces, and of government buildings, law enforcement officers, and other government personnel carrying out their duties.”

It goes on to say that photographers on federal lands in spaces have had their equipment confiscated or been threatened as much, and sometimes threatened with arrest for” merely recording what the eye can see from public spaces.”

Even when there weren’t regulations saying to do so, the bill says federal law enforcement and others would seek to stop pictures from being taken or tell people they’d be arrested for trying.

Because the First Amendment of the United States Constitution says “Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press,” and because still and moving images are speech, anyone threatening photographers or forcing them to pay hefty fees to get permits in order to take pictures is “abridging” their First Amendment rights.

The Ansel Adams Act says that it’s contrary to the public policy of the United
States to prohibit or restrict photography in public spaces, whether for private, news media, or commercial use.”

If a federal agency wanted to ban photos, the bill says it’ll have to get a court order first explaining why, for national security or other reasons, it can’t have people taking pictures.

The bill seeks to ban fees, permits and insurance from being required before taking photographs on federal lands, National Parks and Forests, and public spaces, whether for private, media, or commercial use.

It also wants to make it illegal to seize and confiscate photographic equipment Including contents/memory cards/film) or order a photographer to erase any of that either.

The bill credits Ansel Adams and other natural photographers who “helped bring home to Americans the beauty and fragility of our natural resources,” citing Adams’ works as a tool to build public support for making Yosemite a National Park.

“Future ‘Ansel Adams’ must not have their paths blocked, regulated and made more expensive with fees and fines, or be threatened with arrest and seizure of their equipment,” the bill reads.

Forgot To Return A Purchase? Maybe Your Credit Card Issuer Can Help

by Laura Northrup

While racking up unsecured debt is generally a bad thing, there can be hidden advantages to using your credit card for everyday purchases. Two benefits that we often recommend as weapons for consumer justice are chargebacks and warranty extensions, but here’s another one that you may not be aware of: return period extensions. Yes, buying with some credit cards can give you longer to return an unwanted item to the retailer.

The emphasis here should really be on the word “some.” CardHub recently evaluated return extension policies at the ten biggest card issuers, scoring the policies on their consumer-friendliness in different areas. There’s a good reason why you may have never heard of return period extensions: they aren’t a well-publicized benefit, and some of the biggest card issuers don’t offer them at all. You’re out of luck if your credit card is through Bank of America, Capital One, or U.S. Bank. Citi offers the benefit, but customers need to know about it ahead of time and sign up for it again every year.

CardHub found that most cards with these policies don’t require customers to sign up in advance at all. They scored the policies and features of different issuers’ programs, finding that Discover, Chase Sapphire, and Chase Freedom were the top scorers.

There are obvious limits and exclusions: often jewelry and cosmetics will be excluded. However, the policy extends the return period to as long as 90 days,

Girl, 7, survives Ky. plane crash that kills 4 in her family

by wtopstaff

KUTTAWA, Ky. (AP) — Bleeding and alone, 7-year-old Sailor Gutzler had just survived a plane crash that killed her family. She walked through about a mile of woods and thick briar patches, wearing a short-sleeve shirt, shorts and no shoes in near-freezing temperatures when she saw a light in the distance.

The beacon led her to Larry Wilkins’ home, police said, and she knocked on the door. Wilkins answered to find a thin, black-haired girl, whimpering and trembling.

“I come to the door and there’s a little girl, 7 years old, bloody nose, bloody arms, bloody legs, one sock, no shoes, crying,” Wilkins, 71, told The Associated Press on Saturday. “She told me that her mom and dad were dead, and she had been in a plane crash, and the plane was upside down.”

Federal Aviation Administration officials arrived at the crash scene Saturday to try to determine why the small Piper PA-34 crashed on Friday evening, killing four people, including the girl’s parents, Marty Gutzler, 48, and his wife, Kimberly Gutzler, 46, authorities said.

Also killed were Sailor’s sister Piper Gutzler, 9; and cousin Sierra Wilder, 14. All were from Nashville, Illinois. The bodies have been sent to Louisville for autopsies.

The plane reported engine trouble and lost contact with air traffic controllers around 5:55 p.m. CST, authorities said. Controllers had been trying to direct the pilot to an airport about 5 to 7 miles from the crash scene, authorities said.

About 40 minutes later, 911 dispatchers received a call from Wilkins, who reported that a girl who had been involved in a plane crash had walked to his home.

Wilkins told the AP he brought the girl inside, got a washcloth and “washed her little face off and her legs.”

“Brave little girl, outstanding little girl,” he said. “I feel real bad for her.”

The girl had a broken wrist, but was coherent and calm when interviewed by authorities, Kentucky State Police Lt. Brent White said.

White and Wilkins described the terrain she walked through as heavily wooded with thick brush. White said the girl traversed two embankments, a hill and a creek bed. The temperatures were below 40 degrees when the girl showed up at Wilkins’ door.

“She literally fell out of the sky into a dark hole and didn’t have anybody but her own will to live and get help for her family,” White said. “Absolutely amazing.”

The girl was treated at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, and released early Saturday to a relative, Kentucky State Police said.

In Nashville, a man stepped outside the family’s white, split-level home on Saturday and politely waved off a reporter.

“Not now,” he said, his head lowered, before he stepped back inside.

Neighbors said Marty and Kim Gutzler had lifelong roots in the largely rural southern Illinois town about 50 miles east of St. Louis.

Marty ran the furniture store that his father started, and the couple was well-known and well-liked, said neighbor Carla Povolish.

With two basketball hoops in the driveway, the Gutzlers’ home was the center of neighborhood fun on a block full of children.

“All the kids in the neighborhood are just so upset about this,” she said.

Povolish said the two sisters — Sailor and Piper — were together constantly.

“That’s what’s going to be so devastating for the little one,” she said.

The FAA said late Friday that the plane had taken off from Tallahassee Regional Airport, Florida, and was bound for Mount Vernon, Illinois. Kentucky State Police Sgt. Dean Patterson said the girl indicated that the plane had left from Key West, Florida.

Attorney Kent Plotner, who was serving as family spokesman, said the Gutzler family was devastated by the loss.

“We ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time. Please pray for us, especially for Sailor Gutzler,” the family said in a statement.

Hands-On With Dish’s Sling TV Streaming Service. Is It Worth The $20?

by Chris Morran

ESPN and ESPN2, along with Disney, are going to be the main draws for most users looking to try Sling TV.

ESPN and ESPN2, along with Disney, are going to be the main draws for most users looking to try Sling TV.

Yesterday, Dish finally unveiled its long-awaited live-TV streaming video service Sling TV, which brings a slate of about a dozen basic-cable channels to users for $20/month. Today, we were able to get our hands and eyes on the service here at International CES to see whether it might be worth cutting the cord.

MANY OPTIONS, SAME INTERFACE

Sling TV will launch on a variety of devices, including Amazon's Fire TV, Xbox One, Roku TVs, along with apps for phones and tablets. All have the same basic interface, and Sling says that voice will eventually be integrated on devices that allow it.

Sling TV will launch on a variety of devices, including Amazon’s Fire TV, Xbox One, Roku TVs, along with apps for phones and tablets. All have the same basic interface, and Sling says that voice will eventually be integrated on devices that allow it.

As people who use streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Go know, the interface and user experience can vary wildly from device to device, but Dish has decided that Sling TV should work basically the same with every one of the many products it will launch on.

The interface itself isn’t perfect, but it’s reasonably intuitive. There’s no traditional channel guide (after all, there aren’t really many channels to choose from). Instead, you scroll through the available channels and when you pick one, it shows you what’s airing and what previous shows are available for viewing.

BUFF THIS

There was some minor buffering whenever we changed channels or launched a recorded show, but nothing that crippled the experience.

There was some minor buffering whenever we changed channels or launched a recorded show, but nothing that crippled the experience.

There is a slight bit of buffering when you start a new show or change what you’re watching, but it wasn’t any longer than the wait times many cable customers see now when switching between channels.

Of course, while Dish claims that the demo shown on the show floor is the same as the service that will launch later this month, it’s impossible to say how it will perform when more than a few dozen people in one place are making demands on the system.

Additionally, one question that Dish could not answer was the possibility of retaliation by the pay-TV providers who may allow Sling TV content to bottleneck much like they did for Netflix in recent years — at least until Netflix paid a toll for more direct access.

NOT QUITE A DVR
While Sling TV will allow you to pause and rewind live feeds, there is no recording or DVR-like storage. Instead, each of the channels determines which previously aired programs from the past few days can be available on demand.

These previously aired shows will run much like they did when they were originally broadcast, complete with commercial breaks. We weren’t able to tell if you could fast-forward through these ads, but we’ll look into that and hopefully get an answer before the service launches later this month.

THE SEMIFINAL VERDICT
moviessling
The worth of Sling TV is going to depend a lot on what and how you currently watch TV.

If you’re someone who is currently only watching regular over-the-air broadcasts and have avoided traditional pay-TV because it costs too much and you get hundreds of channels you don’t watch, you may be interested in Sling, especially since it doesn’t require a contract or multi-month agreement.

If you’re a pay-TV subscriber looking to cut the cord but replicate the full basic-cable experience online and on your mobile device, then Sling may be too skimpy for you, unless the few available channels are the ones you watch the most. And remember, this won’t give you access to over-the-air signals, so you’re going to have to go out and get an antenna if you still want access to network feeds for things like local news.

And even if Sling is right up your alley, remember that — as with any streaming service — your mileage may vary depending on the quality of your particular broadband and wireless connections.

We’ll be anteing up for at least a month of Sling when it launches, but just to see how it holds up in real-world situations. Be on the lookout for our experience with the service in the coming weeks.

Closing: Unleashed by Petco at Hunters Woods

by wtopstaff

Unleashed at Hunters Woods

Unleashed by Petco will close its doors at Hunters Woods Village Center on Jan. 24, store management said.

The speciality pet supply store opened in late 2012 in the renovated stand-alone building that used to house Hollywood Video.

Management said the store did not perform up to the company’s expectations at the Hunters Woods location. Watch for specials and sales as Jan. 24 gets closer.

The Unleashed store has lots of nearby competition, including Weber Pet Supermarket at Fox Mill, Pet Valu at South Lakes Village Center and a large PetSmart at The Spectrum. Also, PetMAC opened earlier this month at Lake Anne Plaza.

Unleashed’s closing is one of several recent vacancies at the shopping center, which is owned by Edens. Dairy Queen and Solar Planet tanning salon at Hunters Woods closed this fall, and several other storefronts have remained vacant for more than a year.

Petco Says It’s Pulled All China-Made Jerky Treats As Fear Of Pet Sickness Looms

by Mary Beth Quirk

It’s been seven months since Petco and PetSmart announced they’d both be removing cat and dog treats made in China over pet sickness fears, and this week the former says it’s ready to pull all the products from its stores and online.

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says initial tests haven’t connected the jerky and rawhide treats to a spate of pet illnesses and the death of 1,000 dogs in the country since 2007, Petco said it’s yanked all remaining Chinese treats from its site and all it’s 1,300 or so stores.

This marks the first major national pet retailer to pull the treats. PetSmart says it’ll follow suit at its 1,300 stores by March, reports the Associated Press.

The FDA has been looking into the treats after more than 4,000 complaints of sickened pets as well as deaths came in, claiming that the pets had eaten chicken, duck, or sweet potato jerky treats from China. The agency is still investigating despite a lack of a confirmed connection in the lab thus far.

From now on, all Petco treats will be made in the U.S. or in places like the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia and South America, the company’s vice president said.

South Korean dogs come a long way looking for a home (Photos)

by Michelle Basch

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Dogs and puppies rescued from a dog-meat farm in South Korea are being flown to the D.C. area so they can live full lives as pets.

“This is the first farm that we were able to negotiate with and make an agreement to shut the doors for good,” says Kelly O’Meara, with Humane Society International.

She says her group met with the farmer, and he has pledged that from now on he will focus on growing blueberries.

Dogs kept on meat farms are typically fed very little, and are kept outdoors in crowded cages.

“They live there their entire lives. They never get out of the cage; they never are handled by people,” O’Meara says.

Of the 23 dogs that were rescued from this particular farm, about half arrived Monday night in Alexandria.

“We’ve given them all new beds and comfy toys and all those things they’ve probably never had before,” says Megan Webb, executive director of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

The rest of the dogs are expected to come to the shelter on Tuesday.

Webb says after they rest, the dogs will get medical exams and eventually they’ll learn the basics of doggyhood, which they likely know nothing about: “What is a couch? What is a leash? What is a dog bowl?”

Five other area shelters have agreed to help house the dogs until they find find forever homes: the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, the City of Manassas Animal Control and Adoption Shelter, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, Loudoun County Animal Services and the Washington Animal Rescue League.

Most of the pooches will be transferred to these other shelters in a few days.

Webb says it’s too early to say how soon any of the dogs will be available for adoption.

Local Woof: What you Should Really be Teaching Your Puppy

by wtopstaff

Local Woof logo

Editor’s Note: The Local Woof is a column that’s sponsored and written by the staff of Woofs! Dog Training Center. Woofs! has full-service dog training, boarding, and daycare facilities, near Shirlington and Ballston.

Whenever someone gets a new puppy or dog, they are often eager to teach “the basics.”  So everyone starts in on the same things; sit, lie down, shake, stay in front of the food bowl, etc. While these are all valuable skills for your new puppy or dog to know, they definitely do not need to be at the top of the list.

Teaching your dogs cues like sit or down, are obedience skills. The premise being that whenever you give a specific cue, your dog responds with the correct position. Responding to cues is important, but what is more important is your dogs general behavior.

Ninety-five percent of your interactions with your dog do not involve giving cues. It just involves being together. What your dog does when not being cued is its general behavior, and that is where you should start.

I don’t care if your 10-week-old puppy can sit. I care if your puppy likes people. Having a pup or dog that is friendly and at ease, is much more important than if they can sit on cue.

So here are the top four things I think you should be working on with your new pup or newly adopted older dog.

  1. House training. The No. 1 reason dogs are given up is going to the bathroom in the house. This is definitely a priority that everyone can agree on.
  2. Socialization. Remember, socialization is not the ability to play with the neighbor dog or being friendly to uncle Ted. Socialization is the ability to easily adapt to new circumstances. The only way to do this is to follow a socialization protocol and get your puppy out.
  3. Relationship. Play with your dog! Spend a few weeks playing, learning what your new dog likes and doesn’t like. Teach them that you are super awesome and relevant to them. In dog training, relationship is everything.
  4. Play and Exercise. Figure out how much exercise your dog really needs and devise some fun ways to meet those needs. Walks are great for socialization but generally do not meet any dog’s exercise needs.

Once you have these four things figured out, you will be ready to dive into training with a strong foundation.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) _ Twenty-three dogs rescued from a dog meat farm in South Korea are headed to the Washington, D.C. area.

Humane Society International says it worked with the farm owner in Seoul to close the farm for good. The agency removed 23 dogs, including 12 puppies, from what it says were miserable conditions.

The agency says it compensated the farm owner in exchange for signing an agreement to stop raising dogs for food, and crop-farm instead.

The rescued dogs are being brought to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and are expected to arrive Monday and Tuesday.

They’ll be held there for three days and then transferred to five shelters in Northern Virginia and Washington.

The Humane Society says the dogs will be cared for until they find “forever homes.”

Bottom Dollar Food To Close Stores, Sell Chain To Aldi

by Laura Northrup

A fantastic, descriptive name wasn’t enough to save Bottom Dollar Food, a discount grocery chain with stores in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The company announced that it will close all of its stores on January 15th. However, fans of discount food may not need to despair: there’s a deal in progress to sell all of the locations and store leases to a competing discount grocery chain, Aldi.

That deal was announced last November, so the store closings don’t come as a surprise to anyone. However, the $15 million deal hasn’t closed yet, and the closings will leave more than 2,000 people without jobs. The company announced that it will pay severance to store employees, and they will be fine candidates when the new Aldi stores open. That may not be for a while, and Aldi also may not choose to re-open all of the stores it acquires as Aldi locations, especially if they already have a store nearby.

Bottom Dollar is currently part of Delhaize, a company based in Belgium which is also the owner of supermarket chains Food Lion and Hannaford. Aldi, a familiar brand to frugal Consumerists, is based in Germany.

Girl Scouts Announce Upcoming Season Will Include New Gluten-Free Flavors

by Mary Beth Quirk

The time of our national waistline expansion is approaching, and this time Girl Scout cookie season won’t be limited only to those who can tolerate gluten: The girls’ group announced that the 2015 season will include three new flavors, two of which are gluten-free.

The Girl Scouts wrote in a blog post that most council nationwide will have the new options available for sale this year: Toffee-tastic (Gluten-free, “buttery cookies with toffee bits”); Trios(Gluten-free cookie “made with real peanut butter, chocolate chips, and whole grain oats”) and Rah-Rah Raisins (oatmeal raisin cookie with “whole grain oats, plump, juicy raisins, and Greek yogurt–flavored chunks”).

FACT: For the first time in Girl Scout history, gluten-free cookies will be available nationwide from most councils. http://t.co/hMBRie8obO

— Girl Scouts (@girlscouts) January 5, 2015

Though be careful before you get your heart set on something new — “Not all varieties are available in every market, so contact your local council to inquire about the cookies they will carry this season,” the Girl Scouts advise.

FCC Launches New, User-Friendly Help And Complaints Site For Consumers

by Kate Cox

A screenshot from the FCC's new and improved help center.

A screenshot from the FCC’s new and improved help center.

Despite being the go-to agency for internet issues, the FCC’s website has not exactly got a reputation for user-friendliness. Quite the opposite, in fact. But this week the commission behind the broadband is hoping to change all that with a major site revamp that makes it easier for consumers where to go when they need help.

The FCC announced the new Consumer Help Center today. The new site is intended vastly to improve the ability for regular consumers to find answers to their “is this allowed” questions and to make it easier to lodge complaints.

The new site uses big, clear, friendly icons to help users navigate to a problem to their solution, first guiding users to choose the tech they’re having trouble with: — phone, TV, radio, internet, access, or emergency services. From there, consumers can access FAQ guides about common problems or new, streamlined complaint forms for reporting a problem to the FCC.

The FCC’s web presence has not previously been known for its user-friendliness or reliability. Their web services basically work the same now as they did in the 90s, kind of the internet version of buying a house in 2015 that still has its original electric wiring from 1930. IT’s easy to overload and, since federal bureaucracies aren’t always intuitively organized, has been arcane to try to navigate from the outside.

The FCC blog explains that the new complaint system isn’t just meant to be easier to use and to navigatae, but also will be more integrated with the commission’s other processes. The data collected by the complaint system will be “smoothly integrated with [the FCC’s] policymaking and enforcement processes,” which should ideally make those processes themselves go more smoothly, and ensure that the FCC spends its time and money on fixing the problems that consumers identify.

Consumer advocates from Consumers Union (the advocacy arm of Consumerist’s parent company, Consumer Reports), who helped provide input for the new design, applauded the move. Delara Derakhashani, policy counsel for Consumers Union, said, “This site will make it easier for people to file and track complaints about problems like annoying robocalls and fraudulent charges, and it will help the FCC spot emerging trends in the marketplace. This is a one-stop shop for consumers, and it’s a real improvement over the old system where forms and information were spread out and hard to find. We’re pleased that more of this complaint data is going to be available to the public, which will help root out problems and raise the bar for companies.”

Dish To Launch Standalone Sling TV Streaming Service For $20/Month

by Chris Morran

slingtvAfter months of speculation, Dish finally announced more details on its much-awaited standalone live-TV streaming service. First up — it’s going to be called Sling TV and will be commercially available later this month.

Dish says the service will sell for $20/month with no contract commitment, meaning you can cancel at any given time.

Sling TV will offer live TV offerings from ESPN (and ESPN2), CNN, TBS, HGTV, Adult Swim, ABC Family, Cartoon Network, TNT, Food Network, and Disney Channel.

Additional packages are available for $5 extra. The “Kids Extra” package adds Disney Junior, Disney XD, Boomerang, Baby TV, Duck TV.

The “News & Info Extra” package adds on HLN, Cooking Channel, DIY, and Bloomberg.

A “Sports Extra” package is apparently in the offing, but no additional details on channels or pricing was given.

What’s missing from Sling TV is live broadcast TV from the major networks. So you won’t yet see ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, or the CW as part of the service. You’ll need to antenna-up for those stations and your local news. The lack of these channels helps to explain the $20 price point.

Sling TV will offer basic DVR functionality like pausing and rewinding. Along with, where allowed by licensing, a three-day lookback feature that means you can just go back to that show you missed two days ago.

The service will launch on a wide variety of streaming devices — Amazon Fire TV (and Fire TV Stick), Google Nexus Player, Xbox One, Roku players, Roku TVs, with smart LG and Samsung TVs to come. It will also be available through both iOS and Android devices along with Mac and Windows-based PCs.

Disgruntled Wet Seal Employees Post List Of Grievances In Store Window

by Mary Beth Quirk
(via Reddit)

(via Reddit)

If there’s a handwritten sign in your store’s window penned by employees, odds are it’s not a glowing review. Adding to the rolls of disgruntled workers airing grievances in public are workers at a Wet Seal in a Seattle mall, who posted a list of alleged wrongdoings against the floundering retailer.

As seen on Reddit, the complaints are laid out on a long yellow sheet of paper, positioned right next to a sign crowing “Entire Store 70% Off Sale.”

And if that stock discount isn’t enough of a sign of a struggling business, the tally of complaints doesn’t prove promising for Wet Seal either, which is trying to reinvent itself in the face of continuing losses:

The alleged mistreatment against ostensibly former Wet Seal workers includes boxes next to each item with a checkmark:

• Unused vacation & sick time unpaid (19 weeks blacked out… Impossible to get approval anyways!)
• One days notice to find new jobs

* Store Manager — 8 years with company
* Assistant Manager – 7 years with company
* Assistant Manager — 4 years with company, mother of 2, student
* 2 associates — 4+ years with company
* 2 associates – 3+ years with company, student
* Newest hire — 4 weeks & missing paycheck

• No transfers to open stores — can apply & interview if interested
• “Financial Hardship” but CFO receives $95,000 raise

(5-year employee received first rase this year from minimum wage of 16 cents)
•Celebrate success? This location #1 YTD in district
• Thank you to our loyal (and hopefully former) customers!

The sign urges others to “make your voices heard!!!” with hashtags like #ForgetWetSeal and #BoycottWetSeal. In the meantime, it appears someone has also made use of the rather convenient, though conjurer of sad things hashtag of #ClubWetSeal.

LG Figures Out What To Do With Washing Machine Pedestals — Put A Small Washer In Them

by Chris Morran

slimddFor years, washing machine makers have been upselling consumers on pricey but pretty much useless pedestals to put under their front-loading machines. At best, these products have been expensive metal drawers that save your back by forcing you to not bend over as far. But this morning at International CES, LG introduced a novel idea — stick a smaller washing machine in the pedestal.

So users of the new devices would be able to do two loads (or really, one and a half) at the same time. LG is pushing the mini washer as a good place to put your delicates or when you really need to keep your bright red T-shirt away from your crisp white work short.

And for the busy family that is constantly doing laundry, it could be a time-saver, claims LG.

What’s nice is that this appears to be a standalone product that can be added to any existing LG front-loading machine. So you can replace that basically useless pedestal you’re using now and gain washing capacity without having to buy an entirely new main machine.

Of course, we don’t yet know what this will cost or whether it will perform well at doing what’s most important — cleaning your clothes — so right now it’s a good idea that we expect others to follow.

GM Will Use OnStar To Zap Coupons Into Your Car

by Laura Northrup

OnStar is General Motors’ in-car information service that does everything for you from call for help when it detects an accident to offering the kind of information and directions that most people now get from our smartphones. Now GM has a new offering to tempt new GM owners to subscribe to OnStar: special location-based coupons beamed right to their vehicles.

Wait…doesn’t that sound more like a marketing effort than an OnStar perk? Well, OnStar already lets drivers know about active recalls for their vehicles, so coffee coupons are almost as useful. The company has signed early deals for the service with Dunkin’ Donuts and, more importantly, Priceline, which allows the user to make reservations directly using the OnStar system.

Dunkin’ Donuts, which will offer coupons to customers who are already headed to a Dunkin’ Donuts, having selected it in the car’s navigation system. We can’t think of a more exciting and targeted way to connect with our guests than when they are in their vehicles looking for a Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant,” a Dunkin’ Donuts executive is quoted saying in GM’s announcement. “We’ll bring value to GM drivers while driving those consumers to our stores with instant incentives.” Weren’t those customers already driving to a Dunkin’ Donuts store?

It’s the Priceline partnership that’s the most interesting, since it’s designed to get the business of traveling OnStar users who are looking for a hotel. Priceline says that customers making same-day reservations from their cars while driving is a growing segment of their business.

GM will demonstrate the service at CES in Vegas later this week, and the service will roll out to users in real life early this year.

Flu prompts local hospitals to ban children from visiting

by Kathy Stewart

WASHINGTON — The flu has reached such epidemic levels this season that two local hospitals won’t allow children to visit its facilities.

Specifically, the hospitals are restricting visitors and hospital volunteers under 18.

The Novant Health System says the restrictions are in place to protect hospital patients from the flu. Exceptions are being made for children visiting dying family members. In these instances, parents should work with their nurses to make arrangements. However, people who are seeking treatment at hospitals are not subject to the restriction.

Adults who are experiencing runny noses, sore throats, fevers or coughs are also encouraged not to visit patients being treated at Novant Health facilities, according to a news release.

“The flu virus can be extremely dangerous to people who have compromised immune systems, cancer, kidney disease and other chronic conditions,” Tom Zweng, chief medical officer for Novant Health, says in a statement. “In order to protect our patients, we are asking members of the public who are younger than 18 years old or who may be sick with the influenza virus to not visit us at this time.”

The Novant system has two hospitals in northern Virginia: Novant Health Haymarket Medical Center in Haymarket and Novant Health Prince William Medical Center in Manassas.

The flu epidemic hit earlier than usual, the Centers for Disease Control says. A Loudoun County fifth-grader has died from flu-related complications.

The restrictions were put in place 8 a.m., Jan. 2. The Novant system will re-evaluate the restrictions on a weekly basis.

All visitors to Novant Health hospitals should properly disinfect their hands by washing with soap and water or using sanitizing gel when entering and leaving the facilities in order to prevent the spread of the flu virus.

Now Open at Lake Anne: PetMAC

by wtopstaff

PetMAC-logoPetMAC — the Marketplace and Adoption Center, opened its doors at Lake Anne Plaza on Friday.

The locally owned pet supply shop is located at 11412 Washington Plaza West, in the space formerly occupied by The CupCake Ladi.

PetMAC is a nutrition-based pet supply shop selling all-natural pet foods, treats, toys and other supplies for dogs and cats, says owner Cindy Williams. They work closely with local animal rescue groups to host adoption fairs, and will have resident cats available for adoption at the shop.

PetMAC made the move to Lake Anne after more than nine years in the Virginia Square area of Arlington.

“I loved being in Arlington, but we were a stand-alone building and I really wanted to be a part of a community of other merchants and residents,” said Williams. “I moved from Vienna to Reston two years ago and fell in love with Lake Anne and thought it would be the perfect place for PetMAC.”

Williams is a native of the DC area who formerly worked in corporate America. She opened the shop after volunteering and working in the animal rescue field. The business began as a web-based one, and Williams did local pet food and supply deliveries.

In 2005, Williams opened the Arlington location of PetMAC, in partnership with Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. PetMAC still works closely with the animal rescue group, as well as others, to find homes for dogs and cats in need. PetMAC donates a portion of their sales to one of their partner animal rescue groups each quarter, in addition to sponsoring and donating to various fundraisers benefiting animals.

PetMAC will regularly be hosting dog and cat adoption events, as well as seminars by veterinarians and other industry experts, food tasting demos, and social events such as Yappy Hours, photos with Santa and a yearly Howl-o-Ween party for dogs.

PetMAC has a number of events scheduled for January.

Jan. 4 and 11, 12 to 2 p.m. — Cat adoptions with Homeward Trails.

Jan. 17, 10 a.m. to noon — Adoptable dogs from Homeward Trails, and a representative from Answers Raw Pet Foods will be offering samples and providing information.

For more information about PetMAC and upcoming events, go to their website at www.petmac.org and click on the Lake Anne page.

Winter operating hours are Tuesday – Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Pet pig burned in house fire returns to family in Virginia

Pebbles the pig is headed home after being burned in a house fire. (Middleburg Humane Society)

WASHINGTON — A pot bellied pig who suffered from life-threatening burns in a November house fire is headed home.

Pebbles was at home on Nov. 23 when a house fire destroyed his owners’ Upperville, Virginia home. The 30 pound pig, who was burned on 85 percent of his body, wasn’t expected to live. However, The Middleburg Humane Foundation stepped in to offer care. That care, in conjunction with community donations, saved him.

When firefighters arrived on the scene of the fire on Nov. 23 they wrapped Pebbles in a wet towel and administered oxygen. The humane society considers his recovery “miraculous.” In addition to his burns, veterinarians were concerned about the damage smoke could have done to his lungs. In a news release, the Middleburg Humane Foundation said pigs have thick hides which help them recover from burns better than other animals.

On Jan. 4 a party will be held at the Middleburg Humane Society to celebrate his recovery and reunite Pebbles with his family.

The party will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Hunters Head Tavern — 9048 John S. Mosby Highway, Upperville, Virginia, 20184.

Police: Man Arrested For Snipping Dollar Tree Shopper’s Hair

by Mary Beth Quirk

Hide your ponytails and send those braids home, folks: There just might be someone out there looking to snip off your locks while you shop. Police say they’ve arrested a man in Oregon accused of cutting the hair of one of his fellow Dollar Tree shoppers.

It sounds like he’s been here before — the suspect has a history of indecent acts, including stroking women’s hair while touching himself on buses in Oregon, reports KPTV.com.

the 27-year-old suspect was arrested this time after cops said he cut a woman’s hair at a Dollar Tree store. He allegedly followed a 31-year-old woman around the store and snipped her hair with scissors as she waited to check out, and then quickly left the store.

Officers apprehended him later, and he was arrested on charges of harassment and parole violation.

In the previous incidents, he was accused of applying glue to women’s hair on the bus before cutting it off and engaging himself in a not-so-private act.
