Police: 2-year-old girl left in car, dad charged with murder

by wtopstaff

BALTIMORE (AP) — A Baltimore man has been charged with murder and child abuse after police say he passed out from drinking on Father’s Day and left his 2-year-old daughter strapped in a car seat for more than 16 hours in 89-degree heat, leading to her death.

Baltimore police arrested 31-year-old Wilbert Leon Carter on Monday hours after his infant daughter was discovered unconscious and with second-degree burns on her body that police say she suffered from exposure in the back of a Lincoln Town car.

Carter told investigators he’d been drinking alcohol Sunday while caring for his daughter, for whom Carter said he has sole parental custody. Carter told police that a friend had driven him back from the Dundalk area around midnight and parked on Brendan Avenue. It was unclear where he went after the car was parked. He later made his way home and woke up around 4 p.m. Monday and didn’t know where the car was parked or when he’d returned home, according to the charging documents. Carter said he asked his mother and aunt where the baby was, and the women said they thought she was with Carter’s sister because they’d seen him come in alone around 7 a.m.

Carter’s cousin called him Monday evening to tell him he’d spotted the car, according to the charging documents. Carter then found his daughter, unresponsive and still strapped into her car seat.

Carter has a history of heavy drinking, and “in the past has consumed alcohol to the point of passing out,” police wrote in the charging document.

No attorney is listed for Carter in online court records.

Reston Zoo Owner Has Long List of Past Complaints

by wtopstaff

Animals at Reston Zoo/TripAdvisorThe owner of the Reston Zoo, who was named in an animal cruelty complaint last week at the Florida zoo that he also owns, has a long history of controversy.

The most recent Department of Agriculture complaint is against Mogensen and his daughter Meghan, the former Reston Zoo director. Meghan Mogensen was convicted in Fairfax County on an animal cruelty charge after euthanizing an injured wallaby by drowning him in a bucket in in 2012. She now serves as the director at the Gulf Breeze Zoo near Pensacola.

The complaint against the Gulf Breeze Zoo, filed Friday, alleges the Mogensens shot an animal to euthanize it, failed to control and supervise animals (one of which it a child) and possessed drugs without authorization, among other issues.

The Mogensens have been under scrutiny before, at all their facilities:  Reston Zoo, the Virginia Safari Park and Natural Bridge Zoo in Virginia; and at Gulf Breeze in Florida.

“It should come as no surprise that the U.S. Department of Agriculture needed 18 pages to document the abuses perpetuated at all three roadside zoos operated by Eric Mogensen and his daughter Meghan,” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Foundation Deputy Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Brittany Peet said in a statement Monday.

“The USDA found that the facility was denying animals basic care to treat and prevent painful lameness, parasites, mastitis, stillbirths, and eye and skin disease. … The way to protect animals from roadside zoos is clear — steer families elsewhere.”

In May, federal regulators filed complaints against the Virginia Safari Park and Virginia Zoo, claiming a spider monkey named Jethro died after receiving improper veterinary care for frostbite, the Roanoke Times reported.

USDA officials also allege that the Virginia Safari Park failed to keep its enclosures in good repair, raising the risk of injury or escape for its golden lion tamarins. The complaint also says that in addition to the death of the Wallaby in early 2012, a porcupine named Mr. Quills died of hypothermia after being held outdoors in sub-freezing temperatures in January 2014, according to the complaint.

The owners have “on multiple occasions demonstrated a lack of concern for the welfare of the animals in their custody,” the complaint said.

Because the three facilities all are operated by the Virginia Safari Park corporation under one license, the complaint covers all three Virginia zoos owned by the Mogensen family.

Earlier this year, complaints against the Natural Bridge Zoo delayed the zoo’s spring opening. Eric Mogensen told the Roanoke Times in May he corrected the 44 violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act that were revealed on an inspection. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries cited the federal agency’s findings when it decided in March to suspend the zoo’s permit to exhibit wild animals.

The Natural Bridge Zoo eventually earned its license back and reopened in late May, the Roanoke Times reported.

Additionally, in late 2013, PETA lobbied authorities to not renew Gulf Breeze Zoo’s.

“Based on Gulf Breeze Zoo’s track record of animal welfare violations and losing (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accreditation, and based on concerns about the animals’ welfare, the last thing the zoo should do is breed more animals kept in inhumane conditions,” said Delcianna Winders, deputy general counsel for the PETA Foundation, told the Pensacola News Journal in early 2014.

Ultimately, the Gulf Breeze Zoo’s license was renewed.

Ticketmaster Sells Me Useless Parking Pass, Won’t Give Me A Refund

by Laura Northrup

Adam recently attended a performance by comedian Kevin Hart in Boston, a city where parking is scarce and expensive. Ticketmaster offered him the opportunity to pay for his parking in advance along with his tickets, and he did. Doing so didn’t simplify his night out, though, since there was no one at the automated garage to accept his parking pass. He paid with a credit card and sought a refund from Ticketmaster later. They wouldn’t give him one, until Consumerist intervened… and also learned how the parking garage really worked.

He wondered how to use a computer printout at a parking garage, and he called the company that was, according to their website, the owner of the garage. They claimed not to own the garage. That was confusing, so Adam contacted Ticketmaster to ask how the prepaid parking worked.

It took a few attempts to get a relevant answer, which may have been an early warning sign. The e-mail response from Ticketmaster was pretty straightforward, explaining the locations of the garage entrances and explaining how the parking passes worked.

“Prepaid parking tickets will be scanned upon entering the garage,” the helpful customer service representative wrote, along with accurate-looking directions to the garage entrance. Excellent.

In hindsight, Adam should have called the venue (TD Garden) directly instead of going right to Ticketmaster: they might have some idea who owns the garage. You know what they say about hindsight, though — you don’t have it when you’re waving a piece of printer paper at an unresponsive automated interface.

Yes, ticketing and payment were completely automated at the garage. “When we arrived at the lot, no employee or signage of any kind was present,” Adam told Consumerist. He and his companion couldn’t figure out how to use the passes, so they paid again to park in the garage that they had already paid for.

There must have been an error or miscommunication between Ticketmaster and the parking garage. Right? Adam contacted Ticketmaster for a refund, and they refused. He finally received this rather condescending response from a customer service representative:

I’m sorry to inform you, but we can not offer you a refund. The event has passed, and it is not on our end you didn’t find the parking lot. There ways to find out information [sic], you could have called the venue to find out about the parking, showed up a little earlier, or drove around till you saw a usher [sic].

Thank you, Ticketmaster representative: Adam will be sure to do that as soon as he builds his time machine so he can go back and attend the show again. It was Ticketmaster that gave Adam bad instructions, and where would they find “a usher” in an unmanned parking garage in the neighborhood surrounding a massive urban sports and entertainment venue?

That was Adam’s last exchange with the company: after that, he turned to Consumerist. We contacted Ticketmaster’s communications department, and we were able to do two things: get his $42 back (event parking in Boston is no joke) and find out what it was that he was supposed to do with the parking pass.

It turns out that the kiosks in the parking garage are able to scan the printout from Ticketmaster, and there’s no human interaction required. That sounds confusing, especially if there isn’t clear signage with instructions. New England Consumerists, maybe don’t bother buying your parking from Ticketmaster when attending events at TD Garden.

“We very seldom receive complaints of this nature, but will certainly work to prevent any future issues – this includes addressing this matter with our customer service staff,” the Ticketmaster representative told Consumerist. She also said that they brought Adam’s complaint back to the venue so everyone can avoid having this issue again in the future.

It’s excellent that Ticketmaster promises to improve the information that employees give out along with the parking passes that they sell. It’s a convenient service (I’ve used it with no problems in the past), but confusing and pricey when it goes wrong, as it did for Adam.

Are you living in the caffeine capital of Virginia?

by Rick Massimo

by FindTheBest.com

Everyone knows that America doesn’t run on patriotism and hard work—it runs on caffeine. When Starbucks baristas spell your name wrong, it’s a harbinger of bad luck for the rest of your day; if your hands and mouth don’t suffer from spilled-coffee burns on a weekly basis, you’re not doing it right.

It seems like wherever you go around the country, one thing is for certain: you’ll undoubtedly be able to get your fix and be on your way. In fact, according to the National Coffee Association’s 2013 online survey, 83 percent of U.S. adults drink coffee, averaging three cups a day per person.

But, of course, some cities are much more wired than others. Out of many buzzing contenders, FindTheHome collaborated with FindTheCompany to identify the cities in Virginia with the most coffee shops per capita. The competition was intense, but only one city was crowned the beating heart that keeps the American dream … awake.

Reston Zoo Owner Accused of Mistreating Animals in Florida

by wtopstaff

Reston Zoo/Credit: Reston ZooThe owner and former director of the Reston Zoo — the latter convicted of animal cruelty in 2012 — is in trouble for mistreating animals at a similar facility near Pensacola, Fla.

The Department of Agriculture has filed a complaint against Gulf Breeze Zoo owner Eric Mogensen and his daughter, Meghan Mogensen, for violations of the Animal Welfare Act, the Pensacola News Journal first reported.

The complaint alleges the Mogensens shot an animal to euthanize it, failed to control and supervise animals (one of which it a child) and possessed drugs without authorization.

In September 2012, Meghan Mogensen, then 26, was convicted of animal cruelty and possession of a controlled substance in Fairfax County General District Court. Employees said Mogensen, then the director of the Reston Zoo, drowned a sick wallaby in a bucket to euthanize him earlier that year.

Mogensen, who was sentenced to 30 days in jail, then transferred to the Gulf Breeze Zoo. The Mogensens own that zoo, the Virginia Safari Park in Natural Bridge, Va.; and the Reston Zoo on Hunter Mill Road near Route 7.

The alleged violations at the Gulf Breeze Zoo include improperly euthanizing animals, including “gunshot as a means of euthanasia without any description of, [among other things], the circumstances in which gunshot could be used, the personnel authorized to perform this method of euthanasia, the training that any such personnel would be required to receive, the weapon or weapons used, or the location where such method of euthanasia would be carried out.”

Other complaints in the filing against the Gulf Breeze Zoo:

Repeated failure to handle animals as carefully as possible to prevent harm to the animals and the public. An attendant was not present when the public, including children, had contact with camels, goats, and llamas, resulting in a child being bitten by a camel, and a short-tail opossum escaped from an enclosure that was not covered. It was found dead the next day.

Repeated failure to safely handle and houseprimates. There was not sufficient distance and/or barriers to restrict the public from having contact with squirrel monkeys, tamarins, and/or marmosets.

Repeated failure to maintain animal enclosures. An enclosure housing golden-headed lion tamarins had protruding nails; an enclosure housing a Patagonian cavy had buried wire mesh with sharp ends that protruded into the enclosure; a door in an enclosure housing tigers had rusted, jagged, and sharp edges, and an enclosure housing raccoons had rusted and corroded wire as well as wood that was splintered and warped.

Failure to separate incompatible animals. Rabbits were housed in incompatible groups, resulting in newborn rabbits “being eaten, chewed upon, or otherwise injured by the other rabbits in the enclosure,” and causing the newborns to die or be euthanized due to their injuries.

Failure to provide shelter from sunlight or inclement weather to goats and sheep.

Failure to ensure that food was clean and wholesome when food for marmosets was prepared at a sink that was dirty and had dead insects and mouse droppings around the sink’s perimeter.

‘Free range’ parents cleared in child neglect case

by wtopstaff

WASHINGTON — Maryland’s so-called “free range” parents have been cleared in the second of two child neglect cases, concluding a saga that sparked widespread debate about the amount of liberty guardians should allot their kids.

The issue began when the parents — Danielle and Alexander Meitiv — allowed their two young children to walk home from the park.

According to the Washington Post, Danielle Meitiv said that she and her husband got the decision June 13 in a letter from Child Protective Services.

The couple’s children — ages 6 and 10 — were found by police during a trek home from a park in Silver Spring.

Florida zoo owner charged with mistreating animals

by wtopstaff

GULF BREEZE, Fla. (AP) — Federal officials filed a complaint accusing the owners of a Florida zoo of failing to properly care for the animals, including euthanizing them by shooting and drowning them.

The charges by the U.S. Department of Agriculture say the 50-acre Gulf Breeze Zoo wasn’t properly supervised when a child was bitten by a camel. Rabbits weren’t separated so their babies were eaten, injured or had to be euthanized. The tiger enclosure didn’t have proper ventilation and other animal enclosures had rusted fences and exposed nails, according to the complaint.

The charges also allege the zoo, which houses hundreds of animals and recently welcomed a baby giraffe, didn’t use proper veterinary care and relied on expired medications and even shot an animal as a means of euthanasia. An opossum escaped from an improper enclosure and was found dead the next day. Lion and tiger food bins weren’t cleaned and goats and sheep didn’t have adequate shelter from sun and rain, according to the complaint.

Owner Eric Mogensen and his daughter, Meghan, were charged with multiple violations of the Animal Welfare Act at the Gulf Breeze facility, as well as two other facilities they own in Virginia — the Reston Zoo and the Virginia Safari Park in Natural Bridge. Complaints involving the Virginia facilities include euthanizing an animal by drowning, and mishandling of a spider monkey that resulted in its death due to hypothermia.

Emails and a phone message left at the zoo were not immediately returned Sunday.

The Humane Society of the United States said Meghan Mogensen pleaded guilty to animal cruelty while working at the Reston Zoo in Virginia, and was barred from making decisions about animal care and euthanasia. The Northwest Florida Daily News (http://tinyurl.com/pyldtqb) reports she later transferred to the Gulf Breeze Zoo.

How a small Virginia nonprofit hopes to save the honeybee

by wtopstaff

PURCELLVILLE, Va. (AP) — The plight of the threatened honeybee was made a national priority last month when President Obama announced the first National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators — a multifaceted plan aiming to save the honeybee and other vulnerable pollinating insects from ongoing population declines.

Fifty miles west of Washington, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a small Loudoun County nonprofit organization has been working steadily toward the same goal as it tries to cultivate a genetic line of honeybees that is specifically suited for survival in the metropolitan region and beyond.

Concern about the declining number of honeybees in the United States has increased in recent years, with experts noting that the honeybee population is less than half of what it was at the end of World War II. The crisis became especially apparent in 2006, when many commercial beekeepers were alarmed to find their hives suddenly abandoned.

The phenomenon, known as colony collapse disorder, is caused by a myriad of factors — including shifting climate patterns, the use of pesticides and genetically modified farming methods, and a slew of deadly pathogens. The repercussions are both environmentally and economically profound: Honeybees play a vital role in the food chain, and honeybee-pollinated crops have an impact of about $24 billion a year on the U.S. economy, according to the White House.

On a national level, the new strategy will use a variety of methods to combat the problem, including placing restrictions on pesticides and restoring millions of acres of pollinator habitat. Locally, Loudoun’s Sustainable Honeybee Program — a volunteer-based organization with more than 50 bustling bee colonies in Neersville, Va. — is focused on the bees themselves.

“Our goal is to build a more sustainable bee,” said Alex McLellan, chief operations officer for the Sustainable Honeybee Program. “It’s what we call a ‘hygienic’ bee, which is essentially a more naturally capable bee.”

The program launched about 16 years ago as a for-profit business focused on raising queen bees, McLellan said. But over time, as the dangers to honeybees nationwide became more apparent, the mission of the group changed.

About six years ago, the group became a nonprofit organization with the goals of creating a bee that is better positioned for survival and teaching beekeepers how to strengthen their own colonies. The organization operates under the guidance of Billy Davis, an Eastern Apicultural Society master beekeeper, who also leads classes at the Northern Virginia Teaching Consortium and gives presentations to many beekeeper clubs and groups across the region and the nation, McLellan said.

So how exactly do beekeepers create a “hygienic” line of bees?

The answer, McLellan said, is in the basic principle of evolution — survival of the fittest. The program accelerates that process, he said, by selectively breeding bees that demonstrate traits that are critical to survival.

In other words, the bees have to pass a few tests.

“We look for certain characteristics — the principal one is hygienic behavior,” McLellan said, meaning the ability of the bees to “detect and remove diseased bees from the colony.”

The beekeepers test this behavior by using liquid nitrogen to deliberately destroy a certain number of bees, usually about 100, in the honeycomb, McLellan said.

“Then we come back 24 hours later and see how many have been removed,” he said. “If they have removed 100 dead bees, then we consider the hive to be 100 percent hygienic.”

The group tests for other characteristics as well, McLellan said, “but this is the most important — their ability to take care of themselves, to detect when things aren’t right and take corrective action.”

It’s an especially critical trait, he said, because one of the most dire threats to honeybees is a parasite called the varroa mite, which can transmit dangerous viruses and bacteria to bees.

The Sustainable Honeybee Program tries to breed bees that exhibit certain cleaning behaviors, such as self-cleaning or partner-cleaning, that can help them remove the mites before they become a problem, McLellan said.

“What we do is a combination of looking at our own stock and speeding up their process of evolution, and also introducing other hygienic stocks from other lines,” he said, adding that the group is awaiting the arrival of two new hygienic queen bees from Louisiana.

The group also shares its bees with donors, providing a small bee colony in exchange for a contribution of a certain size. Eventually, McLellan hopes the organization will develop other funding sources — right now it gets most of its money from private donations and has an annual operations budget of just $10,000 — so that healthy colonies can be offered to qualified beekeepers without requiring a donation.

So far, most of the program’s bees are in the commonwealth, but the lines have also been distributed in surrounding states, he said.

“There’s a lot of interest in what we’re doing, and people want to participate,” he said. The group has grown significantly since its founding, he added, but its members have even greater ambitions.

“I would like to see us be at a point where we could say that we’ve built a bee that’s capable of surviving in Virginia and in the surrounding regions,” he said, “and also that our methodology could be duplicated by others, so it has the greatest possible impact.”

Chessie the shark takes a swim off the Virginia coast

by Michelle Basch

WASHINGTON — Maybe she waved hello with her dorsal fin.

The biggest tiger shark ever tagged on the East Coast just made an appearance off the coast of Virginia. Chessie, who is more than 12 feet long and around 1,200 pounds, was tagged last month off Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and was named for that state’s Chechessee River.

A ping from her tracking device shows Chessie was swimming off the coast of Virginia Beach Thursday morning.

Virginia is for lovers my fin…. Not one person has offered a hug let alone a kiss #foreversingle pic.twitter.com/neIk1RyIsQ

— Chessie Tiger Shark (@ChessieShark) June 18, 2015

The nonprofit group OCEARCH tracks hundreds of tagged sharks worldwide, and posts their locations online.

Already, a Twitter account set up for Chessie has almost 16,000 followers. But a Great White shark named Mary Lee has Chessie soundly beaten, with 77,000 followers.

Shark enthusiasts, take note — Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week starts July 5.

Beyond 9 Lives: Take This Checklist to the Vet

by wtopstaff

Beyond Nine Lives

This is a sponsored post by Elizabeth Arguelles, veterinarian and owner of Just Cats Clinic at Lake Anne Plaza.

Preventive care and regular wellness checks at your veterinarian are an important part of helping your cat live beyond nine lives. In addition to keeping your feline friend’s vaccinations up to date, wellness care also gives your vet an opportunity to catch any disease processes early before further damage occurs.

How often should you take your cat in for wellness exams?

While it depends greatly on your cat’s particular needs, the general rule of thumb depends on age. For healthy cats seven years and under, annual examinations are recommended, even if no vaccinations are needed at that time. Senior cats, ages 8 to 14, need preventative exams once every six months, or twice a year. Geriatric cats, ages 15 and beyond, ideally need exams once every three months, or four times a year.

Factors that influence the frequency of the visits include your cat’s age, breed, prior medical history, lifestyle and vaccination history.

What preventive care will the vet administer during each visit?

The first and arguably most important part of every wellness check is a full visual and physical exam of your cat. The information that your veterinarian collects during this exam will help establish a baseline regarding your cat’s health for use in this and future exams.

When your vet does a nose-to-tail exam, they examine the following:

  • Body condition score: Checking your cat’s weight and body condition on
  • Weight: Checking for trends of weight loss or gain
  • Coat condition: Checking if your cat’s coat is dry, oily, has any dandruff
  • Eyes: Checking for any abnormalities and assessing vision
  • Ears: Checking for any debris
  • Mouth: Checking dental health including plaque, tooth decay, gingivitis a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being too thin and 5 being too heavy and whether your cat is grooming itself regularly
  • Heart and Lungs: Listening for any abnormalities and assessing any
  • Abdomen: Palpitate abdomen feeling for any abnormalities and checking
  • Pain Assessment: Checking on a scale of 0 to 4 by applying pressure
  • Walk/gait: Checking for any stiffness or abnormality
  • Mouth: Checking dental health including plaque, tooth decay, gingivitis and overall gum health. Cats’ teeth can develop problems very easily, so regular dental checkups and cleanings are critical to maintaining good health, especially as your kitty ages. The dental screening often helps prevent mouth pain and infections that, if left untreated, could lead to other illnesses.
  • Heart and Lungs: Listening for any abnormalities and assessing any heart murmurs
  • Abdomen: Palpitate abdomen feeling for any abnormalities and checkingfor changes in size of liver, kidneys and the large/small intestine.
  • Pain Assessment: Checking on a scale of 0 to 4 by applying pressure during examination at certain points and watching for reaction with 4 being very painful and 0 being no sign of pain
  • Walk/gait: Checking for any stiffness or abnormality when walking/jumping; looking for signs of pain or potential joint disease

An exam should also include:

Annual Labs: By performing lab work annually, we may be able to spot underlying disease processes and create a treatment plan before symptoms become severe. Even if you have a young cat, annual labs can provide an important baseline for your veterinarian to spot future early disease processes.

Vaccinations: Vaccinations are an important (and in some cases, a legally required) part of good health maintenance. Keeping them current is the best way to ensure that your kitty does not contract any of a variety of diseases including feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia or FVRCP, rabies, and/or leukemia (if you have an outdoor cat).

Prevention and treatment of parasites: Unfortunately, cats are susceptible to a number of internal and external parasitic infections, even when they are always indoors. As a result, regular prevention is critical to ensuring that your cat stays healthy and parasite-free.

If your cat is outdoors often, your vet may also recommend a fecal test to check for additional parasites. The most important, even for indoor cats, is heartworm prevention. Medications, either topical or oral, are typically given once every 30 days and should be continued year round.

Preventive care and tests will help your cat live a happier and healthier life and potentially save you money in the long run by catching things early. So if you’ve been putting if off or your cat hasn’t been to the vet in a while, call your vet to schedule a check up today!

Amherst woman gets 10-day sentence for animal cruelty

by wtopstaff

AMHERST, Va. (AP) — An Amherst County woman will spend 10 days in jail after being convicted of animal cruelty.

Authorities seized a dozen horses, three dogs, three cats and a donkey from 62-year-old Gerri Butler’s property in Lowesville in 2014. Police have said three of the horses had to be euthanized.

Assistant commonwealth’s attorney Tim Griffin tells The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1QFn440 ) that a judge convicted Butler on Tuesday on eight animal cruelty counts. Amherst County General District Court Judge Sam Eggleston sentenced Butler to 30 days in jail and then suspended all but 10 days.

Griffin says Eggleston also ordered Butler to no longer own companion animals.

Healthy Paws: Pets, Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases

by wtopstaff

Healthy Paws

Editor’s Note: Healthy Paws is a new column sponsored and written by the owners of Clarendon Animal Care, a full-service, general practice veterinary clinic. The clinic is located 3000 10th Street N., Suite B. and can be reached at 703-997-9776.

Ticks are one of the most common ectoparasites (on the skin) found on pets.

They are of particular concern because they can transmit potentially serious diseases to both humans and their pets. While it is fortunately very unlikely for a tick to transmit a particular disease directly from a dog to a human, or vice versa, our pets can act as important sentinels of disease in our environment — i.e. if a dog has tested positive for exposure to the causative organism of Lyme disease, it indicates an environmental risk to the human parents as well.

The four most common ticks found in this part of the U.S. and the diseases they can carry and transmit are:

(Side-by-side pictures of the ticks described above can be found here)

According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council, 1 in 35 dogs in Arlington County has tested positive for exposure to Ehrlichia species, 1 in 18 has tested positive for exposure to the organism that causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burdgorferi), and 1 in 458 has tested positive for exposure to Anaplasma.

Many of the tick-borne diseases, including Lyme, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, and RMSF, can cause abnormalities in the white blood cells, red blood cells, and/or platelets, as well as fever, enlarged lymph nodes, enlarged spleen, joint pain, and/or general malaise.

Tick paralysis is a potentially serious condition caused by a neurotoxin from the saliva of certain ticks, typically after they have been attached for at least several days. Symptoms start with weakness and can progress to paralysis and even death if the dog is unable to breath. Removal or death/detachment of the tick will result in a quick improvement of symptoms, often within hours.

Cats seem to be uniquely resistant to many of the tick-borne diseases, with the exception of Cytauxzoonosis, and Mycoplasma haemofelis. Cytauxzoonosis a severe and typically life-threatening disease transmitted by the Lone Star tick. This condition is more common in southeastern and south-central states, but fortunately quite rare in northern Virginia.

Mycoplasma haemofelis is a cause of feline infectious anemia – and is an organism that lives within red blood cells, causing them to be destroyed, leading to a an often severe decrease in red blood cell numbers (anemia). It can be transmitted by any blood-sucking arthropod (mostly fleas but ticks can and do transmit it) – and we do see it in this geographic region. Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis have been poorly characterized in cats but few reports do exist and generally the symptoms are nonspecific and general-malaise in nature. And while Borrelia is capable of infecting cats, Lyme has not been reported in a cat outside of a laboratory setting.

Of all the diseases described above, there is only a vaccination available for the prevention of Lyme disease. In many cases, ticks need to be attached for 12-48 hours to transmit diseases which means that the most effective way to prevent tick borne diseases is to prevent tick exposure, remove ticks when they are found and the use of year-round tick prevention (to quickly kill them when they do get on your pet). When choosing a tick prevention medication recognize that many products that are safe to use in dogs are NOT safe to use in cats and that many of the “over the counter” flea/tick medications do not carry the same safety and efficacy profiles and guarantees that prescription medications do.

Talk to your veterinarian about tick prevention strategies that best suit you and your pets to keep all your fur-kids happy, healthy and tick-free.

U.S. Treasury: There Will Be A Woman On The $10 Bill

by Mary Beth Quirk

Move over, Alexander Hamilton: Come 2020, the country’s first secretary of the treasury will be sharing the $10 bill with a woman. It will be the first time in more than a century that a woman’s face will appear on American paper currency.

The Treasury Department announced that it’s replacing the main image of its own founder on the $10 bill with a woman, though which woman it will be still has to be determined. Hamilton will still be hanging around, but his image won’t be as prominent as the woman, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The new bill will be released in 2020, the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

U.S. citizens will get to help choose which historic female should have the honor, with the only requirement being that it can’t be someone living. Names like Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and others have been thrown out in previous discussions to have a woman on the $20 bill, so they’re likely candidates for the job.

“It’s very important to be sending the signal of how important it is to recognize the role that women have played in our national life and in our national history for a very long time, really from the beginning,” Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said. “This is a symbolic representation of that but symbols are important.”

He says he’ll announce a decision later this year, before going into production.

The move to put a woman on the $10 bill instead of the $20 is because, Lew says, the $10 was slated to be the next for a redesign. It’s part of a broader currency redesign the government recommended in 2013 that will include tactile features for the blind and visually impaired.

”While it might not be the twenty dollar bill, make no mistake, this is a historic announcement and a big step forward,” said Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. “Young girls across this country will soon be able to see an inspiring woman on the ten dollar bill who helped shape our country into what is today and know that they too can grow up and do something great for their country.”

McDonald’s Closing More Stores Than It’s Opening For First Time In At Least 40 Years

by Ashlee Kieler

For the past several months McDonald’s and its new CEO Steve Easterbrook have attempted to initiate a turnaround for the slumping Golden Arches including earmarking nearly 700 stores for closure. As a result of those measures the company’s footprint is expected to shrink for the first time in nearly four decades.

That is according to a new analysis from the Associated Press that looked at McDonald’s regulatory flings and found that the fast food giant’s plan to close more stores than it opens this year makes 2015 the first non-growth year for the company since at least 1970.

McDonald’s filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission only started reporting store numbers in 1970. The AP theorizes that the company hadn’t actually slowed its growth since the mid-1950s.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s declined to provide a year for which the company last shrank and couldn’t comment on the specific number of stores closing this year — or whether it was more than the 700 announced previously.

However, the company says the reduction is “minimal” when compared to the 14,300 McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. The closing stores will be a mix of franchise and company-owned locations.

The closures are part of a strategic review intended to set the stage for future growth, the spokesperson says.

The AP reports that the shrinking footprint of the company is in stark contrast to the rapid expansion it has become known for.

Industry analysts say that the once unstoppable growth of the chain likely led to a “natural overconfidence,” despite new chains like Chipotle gaining customer love.

3 Postal Workers Accused Of Stealing From The “Operation Santa” Program Like A Bunch Of Grinches

by Mary Beth Quirk

Wherever you have people trying to do something good for others, you’ll inevitably have others trying to twist that effort for their own benefit. There’s not always a name for these greedy people, but in the case of three postal workers accused of rigging the “Operation Santa” program, the word “Grinch” is pretty darn fitting.

According to authorities, three employees stole laptop computers, a toy train, boots and other presents that were supposed to be for underprivileged children by rigging the program where they worked, reports the Associated Press.

Court papers unsealed Wednesday as the three suspects were arrested said postal workers at the huge James A. Farley Post Office in Manhattan basically just took whatever they wanted during the 2013 holiday season.

A U.S. Postal Service agent says in the complaint that the three workers worked their scheme between November 2013 and January 2014, writing fake letters to rake in gifts, and even allegedly replaced underprivileged kids’ addresses with their own to get the gifts delivered directly.

The postal agent said one of the workers confessed in February to pretending to be a child writing letters, and having two others copy those fakes 20 times each. He ended up with a printer, two laptop computers, two tablet computers, clothing, gift cards and more… again, instead of a needy child getting those gifts.

The agent said he also confessed to putting his own address on the shipping line in the Operation Santa database for packages about 50 times, effectively stealing from 50 children.

The others allegedly confessed to similar actions, even involving family members in the fake letter-writing scheme.

Secret Santas provided gifts for fewer than half of the 7,000 letters processed by postal workers, from more than 300,000 letters written to Santa by children across the country who were hoping for something from Santa.

Federal charges against the three include conspiracy and mail fraud. And if guilty, they’re already doomed to having hearts that are two sizes too small.

Could Automated Grocery Stores Be In Our Future?

by Ashlee Kieler

Screen Shot 2015-06-18 at 10.50.10 AMDo future trips to the supermarket involve no lines, no human interaction and no endlessly searching the aisles to check items off your list? They might, and residents of Iowa could be the first to test out what is essentially an ATM-like grocery store.

KCCI News reports that the city of Des Moines could be home to a first-of-its-kind automated store where residents can pick up fresh food items.

The group Eat Greater Des Moines is working to bring the Oasis24Seven automated store kiosk to the Des Moines metro area in order to provide healthy food options in a convenient and affordable manner to residents.

The completely automated system – which only accepts electronic payments – appears to be a cross between an ATM and a very large vending machine, complete with a touch screen ordering system and robotic vending.

To use the standalone store, people would simply walk to the ordering area of the system (the part that looks like an ATM) and scroll through about 200 fresh products like milk, bread and eggs, KCCI reports.

“It can dispense anything from one ounce to 10 pounds,” Dave Maurer of Oasis24seven, the company behind the machine, says. “The robotics are belt driven, there’s an extractor that takes the item off of the shelf, puts it on a belt and delivers it.”

The unit will be bulletproof and have the ability to translate product options into different languages for use by all residents.

Before the grocery store-of-the-future can be start vending its heart out, backers must secure another $70,000 and the city must give its stamp of approval.

It’s Finally Happening: Newest Unicode Update Includes Emojis For Tacos, Hot Dogs And Cheese (!)

by Mary Beth Quirk

emojisyayIf you’ve been wondering how you’ve survived without an emoji to adequately express your love of cheese in graphic form, wonder no more: The newest Unicode update includes a slew of new food emojis the public has been clamoring for, including a cheese wedge, a taco and a hot dog.

Almost all of the new emojis on the Unicode Consortium’s list under “Most Popularly Requested” are food, because we think with our stomachs and our stomachs demand to be represented. Coming soon(ish): Hot dog, burrito, taco, cheese wedge, popcorn, bottle with popping cork, turkey and unicorn face. Which of course, isn’t any food we know of.

Taco Bell celebrated the news, as it would considering it will soon be able to write its name in emoji:

Attention: @Unicode approved the #TacoEmoji. Final step: iOS and Android adding it to our keyboards. pic.twitter.com/lFdXOlBhyP

— Taco Bell (@tacobell) June 17, 2015

Also included on the list of 41 new emojis: religious symbols like a menorah and a mosque, new zodiac symbols and more facial expressions, including a face with a head bandage, because that’s something you see every day. There’s also more sports-related emojis like an ice hockey stick and puck, table tennis and volleyball.

This is the update that includes the diverse emoji already implemented by Apple a few weeks ago, which means we should be seeing varying skin tones on other platforms soon as well.

Price Tags Might Be A Strange 150-Year Anomaly In The History Of Commerce

by Laura Northrup

In the past, most recently in 2013, Coca-Cola has experimented with the idea of vending machines that adjust prices according to the temperature. The idea really bothers some people, but fixed prices that are always the same for everyone haven’t historically been the norm. We may be coming to the end of a weird century-and-a-half experiment with the practice.

We never really thought about the origin of price tags, but that’s why NPR’s Planet Money team exists: they wondered why we have price tags, and whether we’ll have them for much longer.

For most of human history, we’ve been haggling when we buy and sell things. There are problems with haggling: it’s labor-intensive, time-intensive, and requires the person negotiating for the store to have a deep knowledge of every product and what a fair price would be. This system continues in some countries and in flea markets, but most commerce today takes place with prices assigned to items.

We have the Quakers to thank for the idea of merchandise having one fixed price for everyone: they first started that wacky idea in the mid-19th century. The first store to use fixed prices was Philadelphia-based Wanamaker’s, and the idea spread through much of the world, thanks to the influence of early department stores.

One young Quaker man started a retail venture in New York City, bringing the fixed-price idea along with him so he could put relatively untrained employees out on the sales floor in a massive store, and so the company could advertise the prices of items in the newspaper. His name was Rowland Hussey Macy.

Some transactions kept haggling: notably, new-car purchases, and nearly everyone hates it. More than a hundred years later, computers allowed companies to start chipping away at the idea of fixed prices for everything. Airline deregulation meant that airlines could set fares according to predicted demand, and the rest of the travel industry began to follow.

Now, sophisticated online retailers make every price dynamic, adjusting according to demand and other factors that mere consumers don’t understand. So far, consumers have resisted the idea that prices can change dramatically at any minute in physical stores, but that could change as more people grow up with dynamic pricing when they shop online.

How to Remove Pet Urine from Carpet

Fido or Kitty left you a present again? Or maybe you found an old surprise when you went to rearrange the furniture? Regardless of when the deed was done, rest assured that you can restore your carpet or surface to its former glory. All you need is some cleaning know-how and a little elbow grease. Just because you have a pet doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your beautiful house. You can learn to address new stains, old stains, and use home remedies to help keep your home clean.

Steps

Cleaning New Stains

  1. Absorb the mess. Use wet towels or paper towels, layered and topped by some kind of weight, to quickly absorb fresh puddles. Run the towels under cool water, then wring them out so they're damp but not dripping, and place them over the stain completely. Put something heavy on top, like cans of food, a pair of shoes, or a book. The moisture will help soak up the urine, while the weight presses the towels down into the carpet. Leave it on for at least 10 minutes.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 1 Version 3.jpg
    • If you want to use heavy books for your poultice, put a layer of plastic wrap or aluminum foil on top of the wet towels first, to avoid wetting and staining the paper of the book.
    • If the spot has been wet for more than 10 minutes, it's probably soaked into the carpet pad. Make the towel 50% wider than the area of visible stain, as well as using more towels, more water, and a heavier weight.[1]
  2. Re-wet the spot with water. After you've lifted up the towel, pour a small amount of cold water over the spot again. Start pouring just outside the perimeter of the stain, slowly moving toward the center. This will prevent the water from spreading the urine out into an even wider circle. Allow the water to work through the stain for about a minute.
  3. Spray enzyme cleaner over the area. Non-toxic and effective, enzymatic cleaners work by breaking down stains into their basic elements, eliminating the compounds that create smells and stains. Using an enzymatic cleaner is the best way to help break down the proteins left over from the urine, removing the smell as well as the impulse for the pet to urinate in the same spot again.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • You can buy enzymatic cleaner at most pet stores, or you can make your own with clean water, brown sugar, and orange peels.
    • Most enzymatic cleaners need to be kept on a wet area for several hours. However, some might use a different process, so be sure to read the instructions on the label. If you're cleaning wool carpet, make sure the cleaner is wool-safe.[2]
  4. Apply another towel and absorb the cleaner. After soaking the spot with cleaning, follow the same procedure as with the first absorbing, and put a fresh towel over the enzymatic cleaner to absorb it and thoroughly cleanse the area. Weight the towel with a heavy object and leave it alone.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 4 Version 3.jpg
  5. Allow the towel to sit overnight. When you pull it up in the morning, the visible stain should be gone, as well as the smell.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 5 Version 3.jpg
  6. Clean or dispose of the towels. Because the towels you used for absorbing the urine will have faint traces of your pet's scent, it's important to keep your pet from marking them again. Help your pet avoid the temptation by discarding the towel.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 6 Version 3.jpg
    • If you used paper towels in your poultices, be sure to seal them in a garbage bag and get rid of them as soon as possible, so that your pet doesn't try urinating on them, or digging them out of the garbage.
    • If you used cloth towels, put them into the washer immediately and run with hot water to clean them thoroughly, if you don't want to discard them completely. Wash the towels twice to be sure.
  7. Consider steam-cleaning the carpet. If the enzymatic cleaner didn't remove the stain completely, consider renting a steam cleaner or hiring a professional to do the job for you. Make sure to ask if they have a product to add into their solution designed for pet stains. Stains are a lot easier to remove when they're fresh, so try to decide quickly if this is what you need to do.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 7 Version 3.jpg
    • Large volumes of concentrated alkaline salts and strong odors that come from bacteria feeding on the waste products contained in the urine can make professional cleaning necessary. The alkaline salts can create a very high pH environment (10 - 10.4) and destabilize normally stable dyes that cause bleeding. This is very difficult to address without steam cleaning and specialized cleaner.

Cleaning Old Stains

  1. Find old stains. You might have a general idea of where old stains might be from the odor. If you think there might be old stains in an area, explore using a sweeping motion, gradually moving farther away from the generally smelly location. The pet urine that you're looking for should show up as a yellow or greenish color. Try looking in the following areas:
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 8 Version 3.jpg
    • Bookshelves
    • Furniture
    • Cloth decorations
    • Inside vents
    • Objects that appear to have holes, such as inside portable heaters
    • Clothing that your cat may be able to access
    • Other small areas your cat could squeeze into
  2. Consider using ultraviolet light to explore more thoroughly. If you want to be thorough, buy a UV or fluorescent black light of a portable size. Look for a long bulb so you can cover more ground at much, preferably longer than 12 inches (30cm). Cheap bulbs with the housing included can be found at most hardware stores. Although pet stores sell the lights as well, they're usually smaller and more expensive. They can also be purchased at a reasonable cost online, depending on how much time you have to wait around living with the odor.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 9 Version 3.jpg
  3. Search at night or in complete darkness. Pet urine can be difficult to see, especially when old, so maximize your search efforts by taking advantage of darkness. Either wait for night, or make the room as dark as possible.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 10 Version 3.jpg
  4. Mark each spot that you find. If you're on the stain-finding warpath, make sure don't get ahead of yourself and forget where all the stains are. Keep a roll of blue painter tape on you while you're looking around, and mark each spot that needs to be cleaned with a small strip of blue tape. When you've found all the stains you want to clean up, go back with your cleaning materials and find your stains easily.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 11 Version 3.jpg
  5. Try an enzymatic cleaner to start. Wet the area with cool distilled water, pouring a small amount around the perimeter of the stain, moving from the outside of the stain toward the center. Spray an enzymatic cleaner on the wet spot, and allow it to sit overnight. If your carpet is wool, make sure you're using a wool-safe cleaner.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 12 Version 3.jpg
  6. Wet paper or cloth towels with cool water, and lay them over the spot. Put a heavy object on top of the wet towels and leave the towels overnight. When you remove it in the morning, you can assess whether or not you need to take more extreme measures.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 13 Version 3.jpg
  7. Steam-clean old stains. A rented cleaner can produce steam that's hot enough to sanitize the carpet, after which the water can be vacuumed up again. Alternatively, if the spot is particularly large or stained, you can hire a professional cleaner to manage it.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 14 Version 3.jpg
  8. Try cleaning without detergent at first. If you find that you're still not pulling up the stain, ask the representatives at the rental center what they recommend, and try to use as little detergent as possible.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 15 Version 3.jpg
    • Wool can be damaged by steam cleaners, much like a wool sweater shrinks if you wash it in hot water. If the stain is on wool carpet that you don't wish to damage, seriously consider hiring a pro.
  9. Use oxidation if necessary. One alternative to using a steam cleaner on an old stain is oxidizing it. Products that release oxygen are effective odor removers, and you can make a solution yourself at home.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 16 Version 2.jpg
    • Mix up ½ teaspoon (2.5 grams) of bleach with 1 quart (32 ounces/950ml) of distilled water. Do a patch test on a part of the carpet you don't usually see, and make sure you won't damage the color. Then saturate the area and allow the solution to soak into the carpet for at least 10 minutes.
    • Use a shop vac or a towel (as described above) to pull up the solution. You might need to do oxidate the carpet several times to remove a stain. Let the carpet dry completely between treatments.
    • Oxidizing products should never be used on wool or silk carpets. The treatment is only appropriate for synthetic fibers.

Using Other Remedies

  1. Try the vacuum method. Pour some cold water on the stain and immediately vacuum it up with a wet/dry vacuum. Repeat at least twice, or as many times as is necessary to remove the discoloration. Do not let the water sit; suck it up immediately (within seconds) of each application.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 17.jpg
    • For tough stains, add a bit of salt to the water, but never add soap. The residue left over in the carpet will attract dirt.
  2. Use the baking soda and vinegar method. Spray the area with vinegar, then sprinkle on enough baking soda to thinly coat the area of the stain. Cover the stain with a towel for 24 hours, then wash the area thoroughly with cold water. This mixture should absorb the stain and cleanse the area thoroughly, and cheaply.
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 18.jpg
  3. Use the hydrogen peroxide and dish soap method. Start by dusting the stain with a thin coat of baking soda, then mix up about a cup of hydrogen peroxide with a tablespoon of dish soap in a spray bottle. Mix gently to combine. Then, saturate the baking soda and the stain thoroughly. Use an old toothbrush or your fingers to massage the mixture gently into the carpet, then let the mixture sit until it dries. Vacuum up the mess and clean it again with cool water.[3]
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 19.jpg
    • Hydrogen peroxide can damage some kinds of carpet, making it important that you spot test this mixture in an out-of-the-way area of the carpet to make sure that it won't stain the carpet irreparably.
  4. Avoid ammonia. High in alkaline, ammonia should never be used to clean pet stains. It will leave a sticky residue in the carpet and damage the carpet fibers, attracting dirt and other debris. It will also attract pets back to the same area, because ammonia contains the same uric acids and salts that are present in urine, making it all too tempting for your pet to remark the area. Never use ammonia on pet stains. [4]
Remove Pet Urine from Carpet Step 20.jpg
  5. Replace the padding underneath. For stubborn stains that you suspect may have soaked through the carpet into the padding, replacing the padding itself will help a lot. Pull up the carpet, cut a sample of the padding and bring it to a home improvement store to find padding of equal thickness. Cut out the stained padding and replace it with a piece of the new padding.

Tips

  • Some pets hate the smell of vinegar, even after it is has dried. Vinegar can also help to mask odor for your own nose, so a few drops of this over the affected area may help to deter future use by the pet.
  • Purchase a repellent spray if your pet keeps urinating in the same area. There are a variety of sprays available for different types of pets, such as dogs and cats. Search for one that fits your household needs (such as being safe for use in houses with children) and won't damage your particular type of carpet.
  • Household chemicals generally won't get rid of urine stains and smells. Buy an enzyme cleaner made specifically for this task.
  • Patience is the key. It's better to do any process a few times and let it dry in between than to try to do everything at one time.
  • Follow label directions on the enzyme digesters. Always test for color fastness before using any oxidation deodorization method.
  • Clean an area that's a bit wider than the actual stain. As you can see in the diagram below, the urine can soak into the carpet pad at a wider diameter.
  • Avoid Oxy-Clean like products, which work by making hydrogen peroxide which has more available oxygen and can last longer than chlorine which can cause damage to carpets.
  • If the accident just happened quickly absorb it from the carpet with toilet paper...keep rolling up paper and stepping on it over the accident until it's dry. Re wet the stain with febreeze and again lift it up with toilet paper. Then pour baking soda over the spot...let it dry overnight. You will see the urine comes up into the baking soda...why? I have no idea...when it's dry..scrape it up ( I use the back of the dust pan brush) sweep it up into a dust pan and thoroughly vacuum. Voila..stink and stain gone. If it's old..this will not work.

Md. osprey welcome adopted chicks to nest

by wtopstaff

WASHINGTON — A pair of Maryland osprey have adopted two chicks to raise after their own eggs didn’t hatch, according to the Chesapeake Conservancy.

The pair, known as Tom and Audrey, can been seen on the conservancy’s osprey cam raising the chicks along the shores of Kent Island.

The chicks originated from an endangered nest on a piling used by barges at Poplar Island. The eggs were transferred to a neighboring nest and were incubated along with several others until they hatched recently. The two rescued chicks were taken to Kent Island to meet their new mom and dad Wednesday.

Tom and Audrey tended to three eggs of their own all spring even though biologists knew no chicks would come from those eggs, according to the conservancy.

The conservancy says the pair has readily accepted their hatchlings.

Osprey mate for life and return to the Chesapeake each year to nest. These birds are considered an indicator of the overall health of the bay because they eat almost entirely fish and are sensitive to environmental contaminants.

Watch the hatchlings get to know their new parents on the conservancy’s osprey cam.

Reston Pets of the Week: Sheriff Truman, Lucy, Andy & Agent Cooper

This week’s Reston Pets of the Week are kitten siblings Lucy, Andy, Sheriff Truman and Agent Cooper. They are about eight weeks old and in need of a home. They are currently being fostered by Fancy Cats Rescue Team. Here is what their Petfinder profile says:

Sheriff Truman and his siblings Lucy, Andy, and Agent Cooper were born on April 14, 2015.

These kittens are super fun-loving, affectionate, playful, and adorable! They were found under a parked car at around four weeks of age, with no mom, very hungry and a little bit hissy. They very quickly learned to trust people — foster mom equals food and attention.

They are little chow hounds — they love to eat.  They are chunky little monkeys, that’s for sure! Sheriff Truman plays the most intensely out of all of this litter. Lucy is the tiniest of these not-so-tiny kittens. Her brothers may outweigh her, but she is scrappy and plays just as hard as they do. She’s usually the first one to head to their kitten bed after a play session. She and Sheriff Truman are best buddies. Andy and Agent Cooper like to roughhouse and have a great time together.

It is Fancy Cats’ policy that kittens be adopted in pairs or have an age-appropriate playmate in the home already.

If you adopt any of these kittens, let us know and our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, will send you treats and $100 in Becky’s Bucks.
