'Sports Matter,' Says Campaign to Help Underfunded Youth Athletics

An estimated $1.5 billion dollars were cut from school sports budgets nationwide during the 2010-2011 school year. During the 2009-2010 school year, $2 billion dollars were cut.

Youth sports programs are declining in large part because funding is drying up. Now, Dick's Sporting Goods wants to tackle that problem.

The Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation unveiled a $25 million, multi-year commitment to support underfunded youth sports programs through an initiative called Sports Matter launched this month. KIEV, Ukraine — At least two pro-Ukraine protesters participating in an anti-war demonstration were killed and more than a dozen others injured late on Thursday after their group was violently attacked by men from an opposing pro-Russia demonstration in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk.

The pro-Ukraine participants had been waving blue and yellow Ukrainian flags as part of a "For a United Ukraine" rally on Donetsk's Lenin Square when pro-Russian activists began heaving firecrackers, eggs and stun grenades at them, chanting, “Russ-i-a!” and “On your knees!”, according to eyewitnesses and journalists from local news site Novosti Donbassa who spoke with Mashable. How Steve Jobs and Masayoshi Son Brought the iPhone to Japan

The iPhone, it's safe to say, is big in Japan. Toward the end of last year, three out of every four smartphones sold in Japan was an iPhone, according to market researcher Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. Tim Cook said during Apple's most recent earnings call that its phone sales in the country shot up 40% after it signed a deal with NTT Docomo.

Breaking into Japan was no cheap trick. To get there, Steve Jobs took a chance on a self-made Japanese billionaire who had a crude drawing of an iPod phone and no mobile carrier to speak of.
