Read A Preview For Gene Luen Yang And Sonny Liew's Upcoming 'The Shadow Hero'

by Joseph Hughes

Following the immense critical and commercial success of his two volume epic Boxers and Saints, Gene Luen Yang announced his next project for First Second, The Shadow Hero. Written by Yang and illustrated by Sonny Liew, The Shadow Hero is an origin story for The Green Turtle, a golden age pulp hero who first appeared in 1944′s Blazing Comics #1.

Created by cartoonist Chu F. Hing, The Green Turtle was the first ever Asian-American superhero, and one of the first characters to have an Asian-American creator. The Shadow Hero will be a revival for the character, as he stars in new stories for the first time in decades.

But before its release, Yang and Liew created a preview for the book, first published in the pages of the Shattered Anthology, which Tor.com has just released in full color.

Eight Years On, Serenity: Leaves On The Wind Delivers ‘New Wrinkles’ For Fans

by Hannah Means Shannon

By Tom Huxley

It was just over eight years ago when we last saw the crew of Serenity on the big screen. Originating from Joss Whedon’s well-loved but little-watched TV series, Firefly, the film presented the exploits of a small gang of unruly space pirates in a refreshingly old fashioned Western style. The film was a critical success, but much like Firefly, the film didn’t exactly set box offices alight. There appears to be little prospect of the Browncoats returning to the screen, so it has fallen upon Dark Horse to continue their adventures in comics.

During those eight-and-a-bit years Dark Horse has been surprisingly sparing with a franchise famed for its devoted following. Two three issue mini-series, a graphic novel and a tiny smattering of short stories are all readers have had to get them by. A seeming attempt to prioritize quality, but of those I only felt the material written by Zack Whedon (brother of Joss) met the high standard of the screen version, particularly his two works with Chris Samnee, ‘The Shepherd’s Tale’ and ‘Downtime’ (the latter of which can be read for free at USAtoday). So it was no great surprise when he was announced as writer for the new miniseries which debuts this week.

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind takes its subtitle from a scene in the film that shocked me to the core back in 2005 (I’d somehow avoided spoilers and had no idea it was coming), which is appropriately re-created here for the benefit of anyone just coming in. In fact overall this is a very accessible book for both newcomers and returning fans; it neatly summarizes the major plot developments of the film and concisely exposes characterization while continually adding new wrinkles to each detail to reflect the time that has passed since the film (eight months, it appears).

What’s more, the artwork is glorious. Georges Jeanty has rightly won critical acclaim for his long stint on the Buffy comics, and he brings over his brand of brilliantly approximated character likenesses and, with the help of inker Karl Story, turns them up a notch. He is assisted ably by the immaculate colors of Laura Martin, who brings some of her best work to the table (and that’s saying something). Whatever the script calls for, no matter how anodyne in words, the art team delivers in spades.

However I fear the script is the piece that lets the production down. Though there is much to commend for it, the book suffers from a classic case of chapter-one-itis, getting bogged down in the aforementioned exposition rather than moving the plot forward. Furthermore it is not until page ten that we encounter the crew of the titular vessel, and for such a long build-up there is disappointingly little payoff. It is difficult to know how well the series is to proceed from looking at this issue as it seems to have been conceived as the first chapter of a novel rather than a complete work unto itself.

For a comic book, it is particularly short on action. In fact, I count two such scenes in the entire book, and one of them – which on rereading I realize isn’t even depicted on the page – is a battle between an unidentified figure and a group of newcomer baddies too shrouded in mystery (deliberately, I hope) for us to yet care about. Not exactly a sequence brimming with tension, then. True, the TV show tended to prioritize subtle characterization over big set-pieces, but most episodes started with the main characters engaged in an action sequence – why couldn’t this?

The dialogue is mostly pretty good, but falls a little short of what is typically expected of someone named Whedon. There’s a particularly clunky repeated line where Mal uses the word “lay” several times, as he settles down to bed with his lover – I feel certain that the elder Whedon would have capped it off with a clever punchline. On the other hand the characterization is engaging enough, and while it’s all a little too quiet for an opener, it’s still a pleasant enough way to refamiliarize myself with one of space fiction’s most endearing casts. And their scene is closed with an intriguing dilemma.

Ultimately, the issue will suffer from the unrealistic expectations readers have for the continuation of a film so far in the past that people are developing nostalgia for it. But it does show signs of promise, particularly in light of the surprise returning character from the TV show. There is even a moment where it feels like the team are taking advantage of this different medium, where we get a brief glimpse inside the head of the enigmatic River. I hope we see more of that as the series progresses, and perhaps we will see the book live up to the potential of the ‘Verse.  But even if it doesn’t, that gorgeous artwork might be enough to tide us over.

Phil Folgio Vs Tor Books Over Girl Genius

by Rich Johnston

Today, Phil Foglio posted about Tor Books, the current publisher of his graphic novel series Girl Genius with Kaja Foglio, giving him the silent treatment,

So after a year of this (yes, an entire year. We are Slow to Take Offense, here at Studio Foglio), I write to Mr. Hayden, asking him if our editor is dead, or just fired? This question surprises him, as he saw her in the office that morning. He seems sympathetic. We even have a face-to-face meeting at worldcon the next week where he explains that TOR just really doesn’t know how to sell graphic novels, and when someone takes on a job they don’t know how to do, they tend to just stick their fingers in their ears and hope that eventually, it goes away. Fair enough, I am occasionally like this with The Experiments.

I mention that we’ve been selling graphic novels fairly well for quite awhile, and that we’d cheerfully give them pointers. However, if they just can’t wrap their heads around it, which seems obvious since after three years they have yet to sell through the initial print run (We’d have done it in 16 months- and that’s with no advertising, which is a fair comparison, as they did no advertising either), then we’ll just sing a chorus of “So Long, It’s Been Good To Know You”, and then we’ll publish them ourselves, because if there’s one thing we know how to do, it’s publish and sell Girl Genius graphic novels.

But we can’t. Because our contract with TOR says we can’t publish “a competing product” for five years. Okay, what can we do about this? But now, Mr. Patrick Nielsen Hayden has apparently decided that we’re too much trouble.

Silence.

No, seriously. You don’t want the series. You can’t sell it. We’ll even buy the remainder sitting in your warehouse. Talk to me. Talk to my agent. Prove you’re not dead or fired.

Silence.

The only conclusion I can come to, is that Mr. Patrick Nielsen Hayden has decided that he can ignore us. Eventually, we, like many other confusing things that he cannot make money from, will go away. It may take five years, but really, who cares?

Personally, I think that the problem is that we’re this little studio alllll the way out on the west coast, and thus, easy to ignore. If you have stayed with me all through this screed, then I would like your help. Mr. Patrick Nielsen Hayden has a Facebook page.

That would be here.

So does TOR Books.

That would be here. Also on Twitter.

We very rarely ask our readership to do anything other than enjoy the strip and purchase the occasional book (Hey, TOR, your first lesson in marketing. And it’s Free!) But if some of you would write to let the folks at TOR know that we’d like to take our book and go home now, we’d appreciate it.

And his readers have begun to do as requested. On the TOR Facebook page we now read,

Alan Cooper Hey, I understand you’re “sitting” on the Girl Genius omnibus, way to go at making money and gaining customers NOT!

Julie Sim Why haven’t you responded to Girl Genius Webcomic? They deserve to have either their books published or the ability to publish themselves as they did before.
M. Alan Thomas II I generally like Tor. For example, I had a perfectly nice time visiting your booth at ALA Midwinter this past weekend. Furthermore, when you are nice to my friends, I like that. As a publisher, Tor has been reasonably nice to two of my friends who are authors. Good for you.

On the other hand, when Tor is mean to other friends who are also authors, I dislike that. When I’m fairly sure that the difference between the first group and the second group is how much money you’re making off of them, I’m not inclined to allow you to charge the meanness against goodwill from the niceness, because you don’t earn any credit for only being nice to those who benefit you.

As a librarian who doesn’t want to feel bad about having the library purchase books by his friends just because they’re published by Tor, I’d rather like to see the apparent mistreatment of Kaja & Phil Foglio come to a halt and a satisfactory conclusion to their problem arrived at. You cannot ignore this and make it go away.

Gary Montgomery I think Phil and Kaja deserve to be able to buy the remainder of the Girl Genius print run, if not gracefully exit their contract. If Phil’s blog is to be believed (and I see no reason it shouldn’t) the treatment Studio Foglio has gotten is silly verging on asinine with a dash of insulting sauce.
Alice Wel Hi I really enjoy reading Girl Genius graphic novels. Could you please open lines of communication again with the authors to make sure that they continue being sold in some shape or form? Thanks!

And we got one reply from Tor Books, to a post from several days ago…

Gemma Peri Please tell me that the next 3 omnibus editions for Girl Genius are coming Soon!

Tor Books Gemma, I’m sorry to say we don’t have future Girl Genius omnibuses planned at this time.

Sounds like someone needs to get on the case… and this could be a warning to others over signing exclusive contracts in which the publisher can cease publication on a whim.

Mechanical Kingdoms ~ Steam-Driven Visions of a Victorian Future Art to Debut at Disney Parks

by Michelle Harker

Steampunk and Disney fans alike, this one’s for you! On February 22, The Disney Gallery at Disneyland park will unveil a new exhibit titled Mechanical Kingdoms ~ Steam-Driven Visions of a Victorian Future.

Steampunk, a subgenre of science fiction loosely built around retro-futuristic visions of a steam-powered society, has been gaining (pardon the pun) steam over the past several years. The movement, which is expressed culturally and stylistically in everything from technology and design to music and fashion, was dubbed steampunk in the late 1980s. Though certainly not part of the steampunk “wave” (at least not consciously), Walt Disney Imagineers have been creating their own visions and versions of retro-futuristic technologies since well before that time, incorporating them into Disney Parks and attractions around the world.

SPM1109721

Mechanical Kingdoms ~ Steam-Driven Visions of a Victorian Future features conceptual designs and ideas for an array of inventive vehicles, machines and gadgets. The collection also shares some of the same inspirations as steampunk – most prominently a fascination with the extravagantly inventive visions of tomorrow expressed by such Victorian futurists as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. So don your petticoats and bustles or your suits and old military storm coats, pull on your brass goggles and get ready for an adventure that takes us forward into the past, as seen through the eyes of Disney artists and designers.

Here’s one piece that was actually done in collaboration with several of the artists, and for me, kind of tells the story of Steampunk and what you can expect to see.

SPM1109722

Of course, it was hard to pick one piece of art to show you, so I convinced the team to let me show you at least one piece from each artist. Take a look!

Nautilus – ACME Archives
Manning the Machine of a Million Dreams – Noah
Steampunk Willie – David Avanzino
Primeval World – Jeremy Fulton
M. Hatter Milliner to the Queen – Michael Peraza
Keep a Weather Eye Open Matey – Jim Crouch

If you are a fan of Steampunk then mark your calendar now, because as part of the Steampunk launch, we will host artist signings at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.

Disneyland Resort:
Meet artists Dave Avanzino, Jim Crouch, Jeremy Fulton, Brian Kesinger, Noah, Mark Page, Michael Peraza and Javier Soto from 9 – 11 a.m. at Disneyana.

Walt Disney World Resort:
Disney Design Group artists, Costa Alavezos, Alex Maher and Mike Sullivan will appear from 2-5p.m. at Art of Disney in Downtown Disney Marketplace.

For event information and to see more images being released as part of the events, visit the event section of www.DisneyParksMerchandise.com.

Now is your time to get Theatrhythm Final Fantasy figures

by Vanessa Cubillo

It feels like a long time since I first saw Square Enix’s Theatrhythm Final Fantasy figures painted. That was only in October, but now there’s no need for waiting because these mini figures are finally open for pre-order. There are three cute characters available; Cloud, Sephiroth and Tifa.

At almost five inches tall, each figure is designed exactly like their appearance in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. That’s why they all look simply adorable! For some reason, I can’t get over how Tifa’s earrings look. I love it!

Sephiroth and Cloud will also come with their weapons attached. Releasing in July, these Final Fantasy figures can be yours for ¥2,800 each.

Yesterday, Kotaku published a piece by Rachel Edidin that went by the title ”She Was Harassed By A Games Reporter. Now She’s Speaking Out.” While it was structured around telling the story of Alice Mercier (not her real name) a female member of the video games industry who recently anonymously publicized her sexually harassment on Facebook by a male peer, the piece also focused on how infuriatingly, personally familiar Mercier’s story is to many women working in video games and the wider tech industry. Even so, despite the the entire article clearly laying out the reasons why women find it socially difficult and professionally dangerous to speak up about sexist behavior in the tech industry, it left lots of people asking why all of these ladies didn’t “shut him down,” “complain to HR,” or “go public.”

Folks banded together with the #thatwoman hashtag to point out that one of the reasons is that pushing back against harassment or biased treatment, no matter how clear a case, can and even tends to follow and negatively affect the victim just as much as the accused. Nobody wants to become that woman.

How Do I Respect A Woman Into Shutting The Fuck Up?

by thingsthatareawful
kate

I just love the title.

Ask Willie D, 16 January 2014:

Dear Willie D:

I’ve been the nice guy forever. I’m respectful, courteous, and I’m a gentleman. For the longest [time] I’ve steered clear of loud, crazy, disruptive females, but now it seems as though society is overpopulated with them. There are so many rude, and random females who get loud at Walmart, and STFU ain’t doing it. What can I do to shut them down, and immediately put them in their place?

Whooooooof, this is a tough one for you, friend. Here you are, just being the sweetest lil’ piece of precious manfluff that the blessed roly-poly baby Jesus ever put on planet earth, and uppity fucking bitches need to get told. How does a man—excuse me, a gentleman—who has such a deep and abiding respect for these mouthy pieces of shit, go about literally silencing his most beloved and special friends, rude batfucks that they are?

Teeming as your local discount store undoubtedly is with hordes of talky-box skirts for whom you have the utmost admiration, your best option, dear gentle soul, is to see about meeting some insufferable broads at venues more likely to attract potential mates with the qualities your delicate constitution requires. Try the morgue.

by Rebecca Pahle
kate

Eeeek! Shad remind me when you are watching this!

NBC has released two pictures of Nathan Fillion’s long-awaited arrival at Greendale Community College. He’ll play Bob Waite, a “politically savvy head custodian who’s not afraid to get his hands dirty but is smart enough to wear rubber gloves.” If Fillion isn’t your cup of tea (…anyone? No? Good.), the January 30th episode “Analysis of Cork-Based Networking” will also feature cameos from Brie Larson and Terminator‘s Robert Patrick.

One more pic is behind the cut.

Is Warner Bros. Prepping Not One, Not Two, Not Five, But Six King Arthur Movies?

by Rebecca Pahle

As a subject, King Arthur movies never really die out. If there’s a particularly bad one it will retreat to the Isle of Avalon, lying in wait until a big studio needs a tentpole with name recognition. Then it will emerge from the mists of time, ready to reclaim its fantasy throne from the upstarts. You thought you were the apex of the sword and sorcery genre, Game of Thrones. You know nothing.

It’s about that time again, as after several false starts Warner Bros. is reportedly considering a six-film King Arthur saga, to be directed by Guy Ritchie.

The history of Warner Bros.’ failed King Arthur movies, as reported on Deadline, is a veritable saga in and of itself. Back in 2010 the studio had two King Arthur projects in development, one by Ritchie and the other by Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin, which at various points Colin Farrell, Gary Oldman, Kit Harington, and Joel Kinnaman were rumored to star in. The Ritchie movie fell by the wayside, as did a planned Excalibur remake, and Dobkin’s film was canned for being too expensive.

Now Warner Bros., on the hunt for a post-Harry Potter franchise they can make bank on, is back to Ritchie, only instead of one film the plan is reportedly for six. (With the final film to be broken down into parts one and two somewhere down the line, I’m sure). There’s no word on how the series will approach the King Arthur legend except that it will be fantasy (unlike the 2004 Keira Knightley movie, which was touted as a “demystified” approach). There’s not even any confirmation that the series is definitely happening, and even if there were, this is a pretty big undertaking that could easily linger in development hell for a long, long time. We know the first movie is being written by by Joby Harold, whose only film writing credit is the Jessica Alba and Hayden Chrisensen-starring 2007 thriller Awake. That’s about it.

Which means it’s time to shoot the shit and talk about what we’d want from an epic King Arthur fantasy series. An entire movie devoted to Morgana wrecking everybody’s business is the beginning and the end of that list for me. And John Hurt can be there. And maybe Anthony Stewart Head. Guys, I just want Merlin back.

Kidrobot will be releasing a Mega Man figure line

by Vanessa Cubillo

Kidrobot sure has been busy! It’s only January and already we know that they’re working on a TMNT line, and now we’re seeing that they will be releasing a Mega Man line. A few hours ago they’ve released a teaser image on their social media accounts with the caption, “#MegaMan X #kidrobot #capcom”.

So that’s pretty much a dead giveaway, but our friends over at Destructoid  were tipped off with way more than a teaser image. Sent to them was artist renderings of the whole Mega Man figure line complete with an itemized product list and prices. So there will be a blind box keychain series, blind box mini figure series, and a seven inch figure series.

I’m way more excited about this than I probably should be, but after seeing how Kidrobot has handled Street Fighter and The Simpsons, I have high hopes. The keychain series will have 14 Mega Man figures featuring some of the best original characters blind boxed and priced at US$5.99 each. The mini figure series will also feature the same 14 characters, but these figures will be slightly bigger. Standing at three inches tall, these figures will also be blind boxed and sold at US$9.99.

For the seven inch figure series, there will only be two figures; Mega Man and Proto Man. Each will be detailed and be US$39.99. So far June 19 is the planned release date for the whole series. Let’s just cross our fingers so nothing goes wrong!

Let's-a go with S.H. Figuarts Super Mario

by Martin Siggers

Bluefin Tamashii Nations has just posted a bunch of pictures from the currently running Nuremburg Toy Fair onto their Facebook page, and contained within is the first look at what they were teasing a little while back. It is indeed an S.H. Figuarts of everybody's favourite turtle-stomping plumber, Mario!

He's on display in an impressive diorama, and Bluefin has also supplied a few advertisement fliers to lets us get a better look at him. I think it's a really great looking take on the icon - they've managed to keep his dumpy, cartoony proportions while integrating all the joints and poseability you'd expect from a Figuarts.

The included flyers also clarify exactly how Mario will be sold. The basic figure will come with a rather bare bones accessory bundle, and then there'll be additional diorama sets you can purchase to produce the elaborate setup seen in the cabinet. We even get prices and release dates - Mario himself will run to ¥2,500 while each diorama set will be ¥2,000 (all prices without tax). All three will be arriving in shops in May. That's a pretty keen price in my eyes. So what do you think readers? Anybody sold on this alone?

Dark Horse Donate Digital Comics to Children’s Cancer Association

by Steve Morris

DC and Archie have both been using their comics to help raise money and support for charity in significant charity campaigns this last year, something for which they should be applauded. And last week Dark Horse Digital also helped spread a bit of cheer, as they opened their digital comics archive to the Children’s Cancer Association.

ddh

Across 36 hospitals across America, children can open up the Dark Horse Digital app and read any comics they want – absolutely all of them have been made available to read. This means these children can now read any number of the three thousand-odd comics Dark Horse have put online. Hurrah! Although, yes, before you ask – there’s an age gate on there to stop them seeing anything too naughty.
