Norbert-the-French-Bulldog puppy
My name is Norbert Stanley, aka "Norb." I was born in Corbin, Kentucky, but now I live with my new mommy in the big city of Chicago, Illinois. I love taking walks, meeting new people, and making friends with other doggies. Sometimes I sit on a corner until a new friend I can play with walks by! I love to find sticks on my walks and bring them home with me. I also like to chew anything and everything I can find. I make everyone laugh, and I love to snuggle.

Peekin' Out of Mom's Pouch: Meet Zoo Miami's New Kangaroo Joey

by Andrew Bleiman

K HERO

An Endangered Matchie’s Tree Kangaroo has begun to peek out of its mother’s pouch at Zoo Miami. Though it is just now exposing itself, this joey is believed to have actually been born approximately 5 months ago.  As with most marsupials, Tree Kangaroos are born in an almost embryonic state after a pregnancy of about 44 days. The newborn is only the size of a jelly bean and slowly crawls into the mother’s pouch where it locks onto a nipple and then the majority of development takes place.

Now more fully formed, the little one is still hairless and while it peeks out of the pouch, it will stay confined there for the next several months, continuing to develop before venturing away from its mother.  It will not be totally weaned until it is around a year old.

Matchie’s tree kangaroos live at high elevations in the Huon Peninsula of Papua New Guinea where they spend most of their time up in trees feeding on a variety of leaves, ferns, moss, and bark.  They are believed to be solitary animals and the only strong social bond formed is between a mother and her offspring.  Both Mom and joey will remain off exhibit for several weeks to allow for proper bonding and to help facilitate a smooth introduction for this wonderful new addition!

The first-time mother is three and a half years old, on loan from the Brownsville Zoo in Texas. The five-year-old father is on loan from the Bronx Zoo in New York.  As part of the breeding loan agreement, the female offspring belongs to the Brownsville Zoo and will eventually become part of an international captive breeding program.  Zoo Miami has been a long time contributor to Matchie’s Tree Kangaroo conservation efforts in the wilds of New Guinea.

Little Elephant Meets Big Athlete

by Andrew Bleiman

An oldie but goodie... last year this two-week-old orphaned African Elephant named Kinango bonded with retired professional basketball player Yao Ming on the athlete’s visit to Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage in Kenya.

Kinango was one of more than 150 orphaned Elephants fostered at the orphanage since its founding in 1977.  The calves often come to the facility after their parents are killed for the ivory trade.  Elephants are also under intense pressure from nearby human settlements, human conflict, deforestation, and drought.

Once the calves are ready to live independently, a process that can take years, they are reintegrated with the herds at nearby Tsavo National Park.  Many of the once-orphaned calves have gone on to produce their own healthy offspring.

Yao Ming's 2012 trip journey through Africa helped raise awareness of the poaching crisis facing Elephants and Rhinos.  Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage is part of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

At Ramat Gan Safari, Mother and Grandmother Asian Elephants Raise Calf Together

by Andrew Bleiman
1 elephant

When the elephant keepers at Ramat Gan Safari Park in Israel arrived on the morning of August 2, they found a newborn Asian Elephant calf. After 22 months of anticipation, it finally happened- the 7 year-old cow, La Belle, had given birth to a beautiful female. The calf has been given the Sanskrit name Latangi, meaning 'thin girl', because she was born weighing 70-80 kg, far less than the 100 kg that is usual for an Asian Elephant calf.

For now it seems that the young calf is doing well, despite her low weight at birth. She nurses from both her mother and her grandmother. 25 year-old La Petite, La Belle's mother, is very active in the life of the newborn, and is also pregnant herself. This is La Belle's first time to give birth, and it may be that her mother is trying to show her the ropes. The pleased father is a 53 year-old male, Motek. This birth is an important occasion as Asian Elephants are an endangered species. Every calf born contributes to the conservation efforts of these animals.

"Miracle" Ocelot Kitten Born at Cameron Park Zoo

by Andrew Bleiman

IMG_6717

An Ocelot kitten born at the Cameron Park Zoo is being called a “miracle baby” because it was born to a mother who was beyond the known breeding age for Ocelots.

The kitten, a male named Aztec, is the first infant born to Cameron Park Zoo Ocelots Maya and Gustavo. Maya is 14 years old, an age which is considered somewhat past the prime age for successfully producing offspring. Ocelots reach sexual maturity at two to two-and-a-half years of age and their life expectancy is seven to ten years in the wild and up to 20 years in captivity.

In November 2012, a team of veterinary specialists from the Cincinnati Zoo’s Center for Conservation and Research for Endangered Wildlife (CREW) performed a reproductive assessment on Maya. Even though she was past her breeding prime, Maya was still cycling and the assessment showed that there could be a slight chance of a successful pregnancy.  The team, along with Cameron Park Zoo veterinarian Terry Hurst, collected semen from Gustavo and performed an artificial insemination procedure on Maya. Unfortunately the procedure was not successful, and the assumption was that because of her age and the condition of her ovaries, Maya would not be able to become pregnant.

On May 31, 2013 Maya was not feeling well and was left in her night house.  Later that morning, zoo staff members were surprised and excited to find a baby Ocelot had just been born!  Maya was given a nest box and hay for bedding her infant and then left alone with her baby to allow time to bond.  Apparently, Gustavo and Maya decided to have their baby “the old fashioned way” and Maya has proven to be an attentive mother.  Aztec has not made his public debut in the exhibit, but zoo officlas hope to announce that very soon.

Ocelots are native to much of South America and Mexico.  They are expert hunters, and are fiercely territorial.  They are listed as a species of Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Fort Worth Zoo's Asian Elephant Herd Grows, Again!

by Andrew Bleiman

8

On August 5, Fort Worth Zoo celebrated the birth of its second Asian Elephant calf of the summer (third in the Zoo's history). The male calf, named Bowie, comes just 30 days after Belle, feature last month on ZooBorns. Bowie is born to first-time mother Bluebonnet, the first Asian Elephant born at Forth Worth Zoo. Rasha, Bluebonnet's mother, gave birth to Belle. Bowie's birth makes Rasha a grandmother and Belle an aunt. The Zoo now houses three generations of elephants! The multigenerational family mimics the way herds are established in the wild. Fort Worth is home to 7 Asian Elephants total; there are 4 females and 3 males.

4

Bowie's name is a familiar one to Texans. Jim Bowie was a legendary figure of the American frontier. He played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution and eventually died at the Alamo.

1

Foth Worth Zoo established breeding program in 1986 and has become an international leader in elephant conservation. Zoo Executive Director Michael Fouraker served as the president of the International Elephant Foundation (IEF) for nine years and currently serves on the organization’s board of directors and as president-elect of the board. Asian Elephants have been endagered since 1967, threatened by habitat destruction and poaching for ivory.

The 10 demands from the March on Washington you probably never heard about

by Katie

2021682857Tens of thousands of people gathered at The National Mall to mark the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on Saturday. Most people don’t know it was for “Jobs and Freedom.” Even fewer people know what the demands of the march were. Well, here are ten things the organizers, representing different organizations and ideologies, were able to agree on as demands.

  1. Comprehensive and effective civil rights legislation from the present Congress — without compromise or filibuster — to guarantee all Americans:
    Access to all public accommodations
    Decent housing
    Adequate and integrated education
    The right to vote
  2. Withholding of Federal funds from all programs in which discrimination exists.
  3. Desegregation of all school districts in 1963.
  4. Enforcement of the Fourteenth Amendment — reducing Congressional representation of states where citizens are disfranchised.
  5. A new Executive Order banning discrimination in all housing supported by federal funds.
  6. Authority for the Attorney General to institute injunctive suits when any Constitutional right is violated.
  7. A massive federal program to train and place all unemployed workers — Negro and white — on meaningful and dignified jobs at decent wages.
  8. A national minimum wage act that will give all Americans a decent standard of living. (Government surveys show that anything less than $2.00 an hour fails to do this.)

[The minimum wage at the time of the march was $1.15/hour. After adjusting for inflation, $1.15 in 1963 is equal to $8.78 in 2013. Today in 2013, the federal minimum wage is only $7.25, significantly lower than what it was 50 years ago. After adjusting for inflation, the $2.00/hour minimum wage called for in the March demands would be equal to a minimum wage of $15.27 today, more than twice what it actually is.]

  9. A broadened Fair Labor Standards Act to include all areas of employment which are presently excluded.
  10. A federal Fair Employment Practices Act barring discrimination by federal, state, and municipal governments, and by employers, contractors, employment agencies, and trade unions.

The list is both depressing and inspiring. Depressing because the nation has failed to achieve so many of them. Inspiring because they are so admirable and just. So let’s continue to fight for them!

by areshoekiddingme

motherjones:

We don’t always write about sailing, but when we do, we write about how the world’s fifth-richest man ruined the America’s Cup.

Things I experienced when I accidentally went to the America’s Cup Park:

-A “wine and cheese” concessions booth at the concert stadium

-A coffee and wine bar with couches at a “sporting” event

-A branded promo open air bar area trying its best to impersonate a nightclub even at 3 in the afternoon

-Horror at the idea that people had plans to get in those boats and move around in them without understanding that those spindly things were definitely going to kill them

-Confusion over whether the audio that was playing was of a thing that was currently happening or not

-Increasing rage as I realized you probably could not even see the races from this giant inexplicable park right on the water

-Glee at the Howard students taking pictures mocking the America’s Cup

-An overwhelming desire to storm up to the guy signing posters and demand, “WHAT IS THE PREMISE OF THIS”

#Australia #I should Be afraid #but #D’awwww

no nonono. Be not afraid of the wombat. They are awesome.  They’re like groundhogs, if groundhogs were furry tanks. The claws are for digging, and they’re complete herbivores.

Unlike most australian wildlife they don’t fart fire or shoot spines or turn into velociraptors as a protective measure, they just have this HUGE backside of solid bone.   Seriously. When a predator threatens their burrow they just crouch down face-first and when said predator tries to get over that gigantic bony arse to feast on sweet wombat face they just STAND UP and crush that fucker against the roof.  You also do not want to hit one with your car. It’s like running over a fucking boulder. I’ve seen wombat strikes destroy the entire undercarriage of a car, rip out the sump, fuck up the axles and destroy the suspension and the goddamn wombat just walked off.   Forget that “deer destroyed my front end” shit, a wombat will give you a complete write-off.   (This is also why you get the fuck out of their way if you see one running towards you. You do not want to get hit by that bastard).

But they generally just wander around like comically shaped foot-rests, eating roots and enjoying the night air.   They can run, but don’t like to, and generally could not give two shits about humans because who cares about two-legs when you have an arse that can destroy utes.    And they poop rectangles.

I can’t.

Holy carp I had no idea they were so big!

OMG I DIDN’T KNOW AUSTRALIA HAD ROUS!

For a moment, I thought I was being trolled. Cubic poos? No such a thing! Sphincters and organic squishy tubes (i.e. intestines) are the wrong shape and not rigid enough to make cubes, I would think.

However, it’s true. They really do have cubic poos. Nothing with sharp corners or edges, of course, but they do have six, distinct, flat surfaces.

Could uneaten algae be the next biofuel?

by Bronwyn Adams-Queensland

U. QUEENSLAND (AUS) — Focusing on fast-growing and hardy microscopic algae, rather than the most oil-rich, could lead to cheaper and more efficient alternative fuel.

“Previously the main focus has been looking for oil-rich algae, but usually these are tastier to predators—like microscopic scoops of ice cream,” says Evan Stephens of the University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience and Solar Biofuels Research Center.

bublog:

BUB was hoping you could help PAWSS help domestic violence survivors in southern Indiana leave their abusers without abandoning their pets.

Make a pledge and learn more here.

Research indicates that 48% of domestic violence survivors stay with their abusers because they fear what will happen to their pets.

PAWSS is very close to their “tipping point” which allows them to get the money that’s been pledged so far. If you can help, that’s great, if not, please share. BUB appreciates your support.

Different pledge points include BUB gifts ranging from magnets, to shirts to a photo-op with BUB, in person.
