Indonesia's top Islamic authority issues fatwa against Catholic schools as "morally unsound," forbidden to Muslims

Morally unsound? Why? Because they don't teach polygamy, wife-beating, the devaluing of a woman's testimony and inheritance rights, and death to apostates? Tolerance: "Central Java: fatwa against Catholic schools, "forbidden" to Muslims," by Mathias Hariyadi for Asia News, June 14 (thanks to C. Cantoni):

Jakarta (AsiaNews) - The powerful Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has come out against Catholic schools in Tegal District, Central Java province, issuing a "controversial" a fatwa that has sparked reactions and protests.

For MUI leaders, such schools are "haram", "morally unsound" for young Muslim pupils despite the fact that they score high for the quality of the education they provide and have as a consequence attracted a large number of non-Christians.

In so doing, they have opened up a new fault line after their recent attack against Miss World Contest; this in the world's most populous Muslim nation, where Catholics are a small but significant presence.

For the schools, the fatwa is a great blow, coming in the wake of attacks from Muslim extremists and local governments that included threats of closure that were however eventually dropped.

The Ulema Council has often intervened to enforce orthodox views about Muslim precepts, such as how to butcher animals or uphold Islamic mores. However, in this case the motivation behind MUI's stance is "political" in nature. It follows appeals by local authorities to force Catholic schools to teach the Muslim religion to its non-Christian pupils.

Harun Abdi Manaf, MUI leader in Tegal, said that the council went through "lengthy discussions" and that a "decision was taken in April" to issue "a fatwa destined for the parents" of Muslim pupils, telling them not to send their children to Catholic schools. He explicitly referred to Catholic schools in Tegal and Pemalang, which have been under the threat of closure because they opposed a government order that requires them to reach Islam.

In addition to Mgr Julianus Sunarko, bishop of Purwokerto, many Muslim families have come to the defence of the two schools, claiming their right to a quality education. In fact, many schools run by nuns, priests and lay Catholics offer such excellence in education that they are sought after by non-Christians.

However, government authorities have tried too often to exert some form of control (however small) over these schools. The demand to have Islam included in the curriculum has thus become a rallying point to gain Islamist political and electoral support.

Indeed, Indonesian authorities in recent years have repeatedly given in to MUI's pressures. For example in Aceh, a province run by Islamic radicals, women are not allowed to wear tight pants or skirts.

In March 2011, MUI also lashed out at the flag raising "because Mohammed never did it". Before that, it had launched anathemas against Facebook for its "amoral" nature, as well as yoga, smoking and voting rights, in particular for women.

AP, Politico, Others Ignoring CNET Scoop: 'NSA Admits Listening to U.S. Phone Calls Without Warrants'

by Tom Blumer

In a four-paragraph "Big Story" item time-stamped 10:48 a.m. ("CURRENT, FORMER OFFICIALS BACK SECRET SURVEILLANCE"), Stephen Braun at the Associated Press, aka the Administration's Press, names several Sunday news program guests who he writes are "are supporting the government's collection of phone and Internet data following new revelations about the secret surveillance programs aimed at disrupting terrorist plots." Meanwhile, the Politico is hyping former Vice President Dick Cheney's characterization of Edward Snowden as a "traitor."

Both outlets, and thus far most of the establishment press, are ignoring a report by CNETs Declan McCullagh Saturday afternoon which I believe would be dominating the news by now if anyone except Barack Obama were President. It directly contradicts an assertion Obama made -- "Nobody is listening to your phone calls" -- shortly after the NSA-Snowden story broke, and one of Congress' most liberal Democrats is the source (links are in original; bolds are mine):

Book Review: Time & Space Visualiser

by noreply@blogger.com (Brian Long)
It's a daunting, almost foolhardy task to try and create a text that could contain all of the information and trivia that could cover the whole of Doctor Who, but Smith delivers a near definitive text on the series. Time & Space Visualiser is an excellent 118- page reference source for the Doctor Who fan who wants to know every little detail about their favourite show.

The book is divided into four sections for easy reference: production, fiction, transmission, and reiteration. Don't expect a boring treatise of statistics from this book. Each set of data is illustrated by a colourful and creative infographic that makes the sometimes overwhelming figures easier to comprehend. My personal favourite graphic is the massive eight page chart which lists each Doctor, companion, and returning monster that appeared in each serial all the way up to series 7's The Angels Take Manhattan.

One of the problems with creating a book like this for a television series that is still producing episodes is that it will eventually need to be updated. Smith does mention in the book the plan for "future editions," but it is something to consider. However, if you're simply looking for data on the classic series, this tome is hard to beat. That being said, this book is really only intended for fans who really want to know every bit of Doctor Who minutia they can get their hands on. Not every single chart or set of information really interested me, though I was very impressed by the ways Smith rendered each of the infographics.

I would rate this book a solid 8/10. As I stated earlier, it is certainly not for every type of Doctor Who fan, but for the audience it's trying to reach, it is definitely a worthwhile buy. Even the most knowledgeable Whovian could probably pick up a few new bits of trivia from Smith's exhaustively researched book. Time & Space Visualiser is available from Amazon here.

From the Director's Desk: On the widening gap between Muslim Brotherhood and Iran

by Anonymous
DD-04: June 16, 2013

What is of particular interest to note in the recent Egyptian support for Syrian rebels is that the Muslim Brotherhood has traditionally garnered support from Iran and that MB-Iran have been long friends and partners. In fact, Iran's deceased Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was one of the most prominent supporters of the Egypt-based radical organization (known as "Ikhwanul Muslimeen").

However, relations between the group and Iran now are at a total opposite, as if turned topsy turvy. Morsi, the flame-headed radical Egyptian leader and Ikhwan member since long has announced full support to the Syrian opposition and urged for direct action against Bashar al-Assad. This is further a visible evidence of the widening gap that exists between them.

Nabil al Bukairi noted in an article in the Yemen Post:

"Since the fall of Baghdad, the Iranian-Muslim brothers relation have not been well. There are some of the Muslim brotherhood who doubt the Iranian policy towards regional and Arabian issues like the issues of Afghanistan and Iraq and afterward Lebanon and Yemen. It is true that Egyptian and Palestinian Muslim brotherhood have an intimate relationship with Iran; a result of Iran’s support for the right struggle of Palestinian people against the Israeli invaders."

More recently, the Hamas resistance group in occupied Palestine also announced that Iran has stopped aid and provisions to the group, which could be another grim and dangerous indication of a possible regional sectarian war that might be in the offing for states in the MENA region (God forbid). If this trend continues, Pakistan too will be gripped into this nasty imbroglio.

I sincerely hope and pray that the geopolitical battlefield being prepared around/for Israel, and for a preset purpose, does not see fulfillment.

Defence giants call for European drone programme

by Anonymous
[The Voice of Russia/Agence France Presse]

Three top European defence firms called Sunday on governments to launch a programme to manufacture drones that European countries are currently having to buy from Israel or the United States.

France's Dassault Aviation, European aerospace giant EADS and Italy's Finmeccania argued such a joint programme would "support the capability needs of European armed forces while optimising the difficult budgetary situation through pooling of research and development funding".

They said in a statement they were prepared to work together on the creation of a European MALE (medium-altitude, long-endurance) drone, which allows surveillance of vast areas over 24 hours.

The drones, until now manufactured only by Israel and its chief ally the United States, have been used in modern warfare, notably in Afghanistan and Mali.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Tuesday that Paris intended to buy 12 "Reaper" observation drones from the United States in a deal worth some 670 million euros ($894 million).

He criticised the fact that these could not be manufactured and bought in Europe, estimating that European countries need as many of 40 of the high-tech craft.

Last month, Germany scrapped a plan to buy four "Euro Hawk" unmanned surveillance drones, fearing aviation authorities would not certify them.

But the advantage of a joint European drive, said the three companies, would be that "critical requirements around the certification of drones... would inherently be built into the programme from the onset".

"European sovereignty and independence in the management of information and intelligence would be guaranteed while at the same time delivering a robust system resilient against cyber attacks," they said.

Information obtained from drones currently passes through the United States or Israel as there is no "European" means of transmission.

Germany's foreign intelligence service plans more online surveillance

by Anonymous
[The Voice of Russia/Agence France Presse]

Germany's foreign intelligence service plans a major expansion of Internet surveillance despite deep unease over revelations of US online spying, Der Spiegel news weekly reported Sunday.

Spiegel said that the BND planned a 100 million euro ($130 million) programme over the next five years to expand web monitoring with up to 100 new staff members on a "technical reconnaissance" team.

The report came ahead of a state visit to Berlin by US President Barack Obama during which the German government has pledged to take up the controversy over the US phone and Internet surveillance programmes.

Spiegel said the BND aimed to monitor international data traffic "as closely as possible", noting that it currently kept tabs on about five percent of emails, Internet calls and online chats while German law allowed up to 20 percent.

Unlike the US National Security Agency (NSA), Germany's BND is not allowed to store the data but must filter it immediately.

"Of course our intelligence services must have an Internet presence," Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich told Der Spiegel, without confirming the details of the report.

The state must ensure "that we balance the loss of control over communication by criminals with new legal and technological means," he added.

Under the so-called PRISM programme that was exposed this month, the NSA can issue directives to Internet firms such as Google and Facebook to gain access to emails, online chats, pictures, files and videos uploaded by foreign users.

Germany, where sensitivity over government surveillance is particularly heightened due to widespread spying on citizens by communist East Germany's despised Stasi, said last week it was sending a list of questions to the Obama administration about the programme.

The European Union has also expressed disquiet over the scheme and warned of "grave adverse consequences" to the rights of European citizens.

PRISM update: Recent reports you definitely shouldn’t miss

by Martin Bryant
nsa 520x245 PRISM update: Recent reports you definitely shouldnt miss

More than a week after the PRISM story first broke, you might have reached saturation point when it comes to news and discussion about it. That’s understandable, and it seems like some members of the US Senate feel the same way. Still there have been some important developments this weekend, so we thought it was worth highlighting them.

A must-read piece by the Associated Press yesterday took a deep-dive into how PRISM fits into the wider context of US online espionage programs. The AP reports that PRISM acts as a kind of refining tool for data that the National Security Agency (NSA) pulls data from the undersea cables that pipe Internet data in and out of the USA:

“Prism appears to do what its name suggests. Like a triangular piece of glass, Prism takes large beams of data and helps the government find discrete, manageable strands of information.

“The fact that it is productive is not surprising; documents show it is one of the major sources for what ends up in the president’s daily briefing. Prism makes sense of the cacophony of the Internet’s raw feed. It provides the government with names, addresses, conversation histories and entire archives of email inboxes.”

The report, considers whether data gleaned from technology companies via PRISM allows the NSA to navigate through the enormous bulk dump of Internet data it collects from the undersea cables.

“For example, not every company archives instant message conversations, chat room exchanges or videoconferences. But if Prism provided general details, known as metadata, about when a user began chatting, could the government “rewind” its copy of the global Internet stream, find the conversation and replay it in full?”

In other words, technology companies may be telling the truth when they say that they only hand over specific user information in response to specific requests, but the NSA doesn’t really need anything more from them anyway, because they already have a ‘raw feed’ of Internet traffic to pull from.

Read the AP’s article in full for a fascinating, and perhaps troubling, look at what it seems the NSA is up to.

Elsewhere, the Washington Post reports that PRISM works with three other programs run by the NSA; MAINWAY, MARINA and NUCLEON. Together, the programs collect vast swathes of metadata about telephone and Internet communications passing through USA.

“When the NSA aims for foreign targets whose communications cross U.S. infrastructure, it expects to sweep in some American content “incidentally” or “inadvertently,” which are terms of art in regulations governing the NSA. Contact chaining, because it extends to the contacts of contacts of targets, inevitably collects even more American data.”

Keep up with all our PRISM coverage here. We’re sure there’s still more to come.

Full NSA access built into every Windows OS since 1997

by Tapestry

You need early Windows 95 or its predecessors to not have an NSA backdoor.

June 15 2013

How NSA access was built into Windows
Duncan Campbell 04.09.1999

Careless mistake reveals subversion of Windows by NSA.
A CARELESS mistake by Microsoft programmers has revealed that special access codes prepared by the US National Security Agency have been secretly built into Windows. The NSA access system is built into every version of the Windows operating system now in use, except early releases of Windows 95 (and its predecessors). The discovery comes close on the heels of the revelations earlier this year that another US software giant, Lotus, had built an NSA "help information" trapdoor into its Notes system, and that security functions on other software systems had been deliberately crippled.

The first discovery of the new NSA access system was made two years ago by British researcher Dr Nicko van Someren. But it was only a few weeks ago when a second researcher rediscovered the access system. With it, he found the evidence linking it to NSA.
Computer security specialists have been aware for two years that unusual features are contained inside a standard Windows software "driver" used for security and encryption functions. The driver, called ADVAPI.DLL, enables and controls a range of security functions. If you use Windows, you will find it in the C:\Windows\system directory of your computer.

ADVAPI.DLL works closely with Microsoft Internet Explorer, but will only run cryptographic functions that the US governments allows Microsoft to export. That information is bad enough news, from a European point of view. Now, it turns out that ADVAPI will run special programmes inserted and controlled by NSA. As yet, no-one knows what these programmes are, or what they do.

Dr Nicko van Someren reported at last year's Crypto 98 conference that he had disassembled the ADVADPI driver. He found it contained two different keys. One was used by Microsoft to control the cryptographic functions enabled in Windows, in compliance with US export regulations. But the reason for building in a second key, or who owned it, remained a mystery.

A second key

Two weeks ago, a US security company came up with conclusive evidence that the second key belongs to NSA. Like Dr van Someren, Andrew Fernandez, chief scientist with Cryptonym of Morrisville, North Carolina, had been probing the presence and significance of the two keys. Then he checked the latest Service Pack release for Windows NT4, Service Pack 5. He found that Microsoft's developers had failed to remove or "strip" the debugging symbols used to test this software before they released it. Inside the code were the labels for the two keys. One was called "KEY". The other was called "NSAKEY".

Fernandes reported his re-discovery of the two CAPI keys, and their secret meaning, to "Advances in Cryptology, Crypto'99" conference held in Santa Barbara. According to those present at the conference, Windows developers attending the conference did not deny that the "NSA" key was built into their software. But they refused to talk about what the key did, or why it had been put there without users' knowledge.

A third key?!

But according to two witnesses attending the conference, even Microsoft's top crypto programmers were astonished to learn that the version of ADVAPI.DLL shipping with Windows 2000 contains not two, but three keys. Brian LaMachia, head of CAPI development at Microsoft was "stunned" to learn of these discoveries, by outsiders. The latest discovery by Dr van Someren is based on advanced search methods which test and report on the "entropy" of programming code.

Within the Microsoft organisation, access to Windows source code is said to be highly compartmentalized, making it easy for modifications to be inserted without the knowledge of even the respective product managers.

Researchers are divided about whether the NSA key could be intended to let US government users of Windows run classified cryptosystems on their machines or whether it is intended to open up anyone's and everyone's Windows computer to intelligence gathering techniques deployed by NSA's burgeoning corps of "information warriors".

According to Fernandez of Cryptonym, the result of having the secret key inside your Windows operating system "is that it is tremendously easier for the NSA to load unauthorized security services on all copies of Microsoft Windows, and once these security services are loaded, they can effectively compromise your entire operating system". The NSA key is contained inside all versions of Windows from Windows 95 OSR2 onwards.

"For non-American IT managers relying on Windows NT to operate highly secure data centres, this find is worrying", he added. "The US government is currently making it as difficult as possible for "strong" crypto to be used outside of the US. That they have also installed a cryptographic back-door in the world's most abundant operating system should send a strong message to foreign IT managers". "How is an IT manager to feel when they learn that in every copy of Windows sold, Microsoft has a 'back door' for NSA - making it orders of magnitude easier for the US government to access your computer?" he asked. Can the loophole be turned round against the snoopers?

Read More HERE. My comments follow:

Last summer I got contacted by a Microsoft programmer, who blew the whistle on Microsoft intentionally sabotaging the operating system, and then running closed code to conceal to the majority just how penetrable the operating system is for a chosen few. This programmer went on to say that for a price, if one Jewish corporation was in a battle against a non Jewish corporation, Microsoft would provide information about intentional back doors built into the competitor's computers, so that the zionist company could go in and entirely rape their data.
He also went further, and said that both McCaffee and Norton work closely with Microsoft, and build additional back doors competitors can exploit the same way and that these security suites do nothing to plug Microsoft's back doors and instead provide a different flavor of method for raping data, (the difference being like your preference for either Word or Wordperfect). In the same way Microsoft will allow a system rape, these additional paid for back doors can be used to destroy individuals by allowing ordinary priviledged people full access to your system, even if they are not an intelligence agency at all. Bottom line? The only secure system is a small fully open source Linux system that you can read through yourself and verify secure. Any Microsoft O.S. is as intentionally penetrable as your cell phone, which is also inevitably the product of a zionist corporation.

Researchers find biological evidence of Gulf War illnesses

by Georgetown CNSL
06/15/13:  The New York Times reports in the two decades since the 1991 Persian Gulf war, medical researchers have struggled to explain a mysterious amalgam of problems in thousands of gulf war veterans, including joint pain, physical malaise and gastrointestinal disorders. In some medical circles, the symptoms were thought to be psychological, the result of combat stress. But recent research is bolstering the view that the symptoms, known collectively as gulf war illness, are fundamentally biological in nature. In the latest example, researchers at Georgetown University say they have found neurological damage in gulf war veterans reporting symptoms of the disease. Using magnetic resonance imaging to study the brains of gulf war veterans before and after exercise, the researchers discovered evidence of damage in parts of their brains associated with heart rate and pain. Such damage was not evident in the control group, which included nonveterans and healthy veterans. Such neurological damage, the researchers theorize, caused the veterans to be more sensitive to pain, to feel easily fatigued and to experience loss of short-term “working memory,” all symptoms associated with gulf war illness.
