Spiked Sprinkler Head Hide-A-Key

Dan Jones

Much better than a rock

Not that a good ol' rock doesn't still work just as well, but this sprinkler head version of the hide-a-key expands the options for people who have more grass than stone cover in their yard. The lockout preventer has a spiked end that presses into the lawn with no digging required. Inside, the capsule is water- and moisture-proof, and virtually indestructible on the whole.

Sprinkler head hide-a-keys are made from actual sprinkler head material, and blend in well with other, functional sprinkler heads in the yard.

UT computer scientists develop new method for generating random numbers

by Dan Jones

With an advance that one cryptography expert called a “masterpiece,” University of Texas at Austin computer scientists have developed a new method for producing truly random numbers, a breakthrough that could be used to encrypt data, make electronic voting more secure, conduct statistically significant polls and more accurately simulate complex systems such as Earth’s climate.

The new method creates truly random numbers with less computational effort than other methods, which could facilitate significantly higher levels of security for everything from consumer credit card transactions to military communications.

The new method takes two weakly random sequences of numbers and turns them into one sequence of truly random numbers. Weakly random sequences, such as air temperatures and stock market prices sampled over time, harbor predictable patterns. Truly random sequences have nothing predictable about them, like a coin toss.

Google announces Android Instant Apps, use applications without installing them

by Dima Aryeh

What if we didn’t have to download every app to use its features? What if there was a single app that encapsulated all services? Well we have that app, and it’s called a web browser. But using mobile sites isn’t always ideal, and keeping an app around just for occasional use is a waste of your phone’s precious resources.

Enter Android Instant Apps, a new feature announced by Google. If you need to use an app, you can open it without having to install it. Participating apps will be designed with modules, so when you need to use an app you don’t have installed, it can be loaded quickly and with as little data usage as possible just by downloading the needed modules.

A great example given at I/O is finding a product like a camera bag on Google. Hitting the link to B&H will seamlessly open only the part of the app you need rather than the mobile site, all without installing. You can even check out with Android Pay with no hassle.

If the process is quick, this will make shopping, viewing content, and more much easier on the internet. Native apps are so often superior to the mobile site, so having them available without lengthy install times is awesome. And best of all, this feature will be available for all devices Jelly Bean and up, so Android N won’t be necessary!

What do you guys think of this new feature? Is it useful? Leave a comment!

Android Auto will soon no longer require a compatible car system

by Dima Aryeh
Dan Jones

Cool. Currently using Drivemode, which I love, but will try it out.

Android Auto is an awesome feature, but not everyone has a compatible car. Some new cars are now supporting the feature, but many still aren’t. And if you’re driving an older car, your only hope is installing a very expensive Android Auto head unit, if one even fits in your car.

Fortunately, Google has announced an update to the feature that many have been asking for. You will no longer need Android Auto-compatible hardware, like a head unit or car entertainment system. You’ll be able to use Android Auto on your smartphone.

Android Auto phone 2

This is something that many people have asked for and a few apps have even offered. You will now have a user interface optimized for driving, with giant buttons and necessary apps at your fingertips.

For people that use their smartphone for navigation and hands-free calling, this is a fantastic addition. This feature will be coming later this year, though no specific date was released. How many of you are looking forward to this update?

Google announces new features for Android TV, Xiaomi Mi Box coming to US

by Dima Aryeh

Android TV started out a bit rocky, but it’s getting lots of support from hardware manufacturers now. Google has announced that Sony’s 2016 BRAVIA lineup and Sharp’s Net Player will both feature Android TV, adding to the list of hardware that includes it.

Google also announced a bunch of new apps coming to Android TV, and the list is very impressive. We’ll soon see  CNN, Comedy Central, MTV, Freeform, Nickelodeon, Spotify, STARZ, WATCH ABC, WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney Junior, ESPN and more. Those are some huge names, making Android TV much more appealing. There are some new features coming with Android N, too, like picture-in-picture, recording APIs for live TV, and high dynamic range.

On top of that, Xiaomi has announced the Mi Box 4K Android TV set-top box. It will include a Bluetooth remote with voice control, and you’ll be able to buy a separate gaming control with dual vibration motors. And surprisingly, it’ll be coming to the US!

Google wants you to help name Android N

by Dustin Earley

Have you ever heard the name for the latest release of Android –Marshmallow, Lollipop, Jelly Bean, etc.– and thought you could do better? If that’s the case, then Google wants YOU!

Straight out of Google I/O, Google has just published a website where users can suggest a name for Android N, which Google will then pick through to find a winner. That’s it. Seriously. Head over to the source link and suggest away.

Our first choice is definitely Nutella, but you never know what will end up winning.

Google Home, Google’s answer to Echo, is official

by Dustin Earley
Dan Jones

Needs integration with IFTTT.

At Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O, the company has just announced its answer to Amazon’s popular Echo device: Google Home.

Google Home is an absolutely gorgeous device utilizing Google’s new Assistant service, a conversational assistant that will eventually be able to do everything from buying you movie tickets to ordering dinner right to your front door. Coming later this year, Google Home will use advanced listening to be able to answer your Google Search questions, play movies and videos, control your smart home and much more. Google Home will also be totally customizable, coming in a variety of colors.

Google Home is very much still in the development stage, with no release or pricing information available at this time. The point of Google announcing it so early, aside from obviously helping to stall Echo sales for those who would rather wait, is for third-party developers to begin integrating their services now.

Allo is Google’s new smart messaging service

by Dustin Earley
Dan Jones

This seems like a waste of their time. They should have just integrated Assistant into Hangouts, rather than create a whole new mobile-only app.

Google has announced yet another new messaging service today at Google I/O, called Allo, this time with a focus on machine learning and automation thanks to integration of Google Assistant.

As a messaging service, at first blush, you’d be hard pressed to see how Allo is different from other platforms. You sign up using your phone number with the ability to connect your Google account; there are emojis and custom stickers; a feature called WhisperShout allows you to change the text size of individual messages to imply excitement or a whisper; you can draw on photos and so on. But Allo’s killer feature isn’t WhisperShouting or stickers, but the complete integration of Google Assistant.

Aside from creepily accurate response suggestions, that go as far as identifying the type of pasta in a picture of spaghetti and the ingredients inside, then providing an appropriate response (becuase conversations are for robots now), Allo will house Google Assistant as a chat bot. By messaging @google, Allo users will be able to ask all sorts of conversational questions, play simple games and much, much more thanks to third-party developer integration.

Allo also places emphasis on security, providing totally encrypted messages and ability to incognito message with expiration dates for even more privacy.

It’s important to note that Allo won’t be a complete SMS replacement, Google just wants to make a good app, and hope people will use it. Look for Allo to launch this summer on Android and iOS.

TravelJohn Disposable Personal Urinals

TravelJohn Disposable Urinals are for everyone who's gotta go. Just look at the box. Men, women, and children alike with knees knocking, thighs constricting, and hands holding on tight can take relief in taking a whizz nearly anywhere! The personal pee pouches, sold here as a set of 6, come with an adapter that makes them unisex and open for business to anyone, whether sitting down or standing. A spill guard even prevents back flow during use.

The pee-eating beasts inside each TravelJohn go by the name"Liqsorb." They consist of a biodegradable non-woven fabric pouch containing a similarly biodegradable polymer substance. The latter absorbs incoming streams quickly, preventing any bacterial growth, and rendering both odorless and spill-proof. The bag basically turns to gel.

TravelJohns will hold up to 28 ounces of urine. That's 800cc for the medically-minded out there, and 2-1/3 cans of Budweiser America for the beer drinkers. Dude. That is a lot of pee.

The Disposable Urinals make faithful companions on car trips, at outdoor activities, and during TV show binge sessions when you're too lazy to get off the couch to hit the bathroom. They can also step in when someone needs to unleash the vomit, and serve as a tidy TravelBarfBag.

Each TravelJohn weighs 1.5 ounces unused and folds to 2" x 2" x 5".

Google’s Amazon Echo competitor to be called Google Home; announcement tomorrow

by Nick Sarafolean

Google I/O is nearly upon us and rumors have been flying about Google creating a competitor to Amazon’s Echo. Now, that competitor has a name. The New York Times is reporting that Google’s unit will be called Google Home and that it will launch it tomorrow at Google I/O. This unit will be voice-activated and can respond to questions and perform certain tasks. That being said, it’s unclear how advanced Google’s device is.

Amazon has worked to improve the Echo since its launch, adding in a whole host of new abilities that make it stand out among the crowd. Google will need to match or exceed these abilities in order to compete with Amazon, which has already established a foothold in the market.

That being said, Google has ample opportunity to make Google Home shine. The device reportedly won’t go on sale until the fall, allowing Google a great span of time in which to perfect Google Home. Google can also utilize its resources from Android, such as Google Now, and the newer version, Now On Tap, which is contextually aware. By implementing that same contextual awareness into Google Home, Google could make a product that can perform far more complex tasks than its competitors.

While details are still patchy, we should know more in less than 24 hours, when Google I/O 2016 is in full swing. Stay tuned.

This Tattoo Ink Fades After A Year To Save You From Regret

by Sean Fallon

ephemeral tattoo

If temporary tattoos are a one night stand and regular tattoos are a successful marriage, Ephemeral Tattoos are that relationship that started of strong and fizzled after a year because you “need space”.

Indeed, Ephemeral is developing a tattoo ink that specifically engineered to last about a year and then fade. That fading process can also be sped up with a special (and painless) removal solution—and both the tattooing and removal can be done by the same licensed artists that do permanent tattoos.

Ephemeral is still in the testing phase, but they’re planning to launch in August of next year.

And who knows? Maybe after that trial period of living together you’ll decide to take the relationship to the next level. That’s when you can put a real tattoo on it.

Firefly Micro Bluetooth Music Receiver

If you don't have a brand new Tesla...or Toyota Prius, or the like, the Firefly is the smallest, and maybe simplest way to upgrade your current car (and home) audio system with Bluetooth compatibility. This tiny cable is also an even tinier receiver that connects your non-Bluetooth stereo to your phone, tablet, or other Bluetooth music devices, enabling streaming of high-quality sound while driving your 2002 Camry, or chilling alongside your circa 1986 boombox in your circa 1986 Villain Chair.

Firefly maker Tunai Creative says their Bluetooth converter uses advanced audio compressions technology to preserve smooth, authentic sound quality. It also allows multiple device connections, storing up to 8 paired devices, so everyone can take a turn touchscreen-ing the tunes.

The Firefly cable includes an AUX extension cable and an AUX to RCA cable for home stereo compatibility. To use in the car, you'll need a USB port (i.e., cigarette lighter converter) and AUX port. The cable measures 5.91" x 3.15" x 1.18" and weighs 4 ounces.

The Firefly Bluetooth music receiver is available for 28% off retail price for a limited time.
