State Borders

A schism between the pro-panhandle and anti-panhandle factions eventually led to war, but both sides spent too much time working on their flag designs to actually do much fighting.

Google Play and Movies Anywhere bring your movies together

by Ben Serridge

Whether you're looking for a Halloween classic or the latest action thriller, we want you to access that movie, no matter what platform or device you're using. You can already find the Google Play Movies & TV app on Android devices, on Apple’s App Store, Roku’s Channel Store, and many top Smart TVs by Samsung, LG and Vizio, not to mention Chromecast and Android TV. And with Family Library, everyone in the family can share purchased movies at no additional fee, even if they’re using a different device.

Today, we’re taking it one step further by adding support for Movies Anywhere, allowing you to bring together your movies from Google Play, Amazon, iTunes and Vudu into a single library that you can access on any of your devices, regardless of where the purchase was originally made. Available first in the U.S., just connect your accounts using the new Movies Anywhere app or on the Movies Anywhere website, and all the movies you’ve purchased from Disney, Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros. will be available for you to watch on Google Play.

123

Even better, when you link two or more accounts through Movies Anywhere, you’ll get these blockbuster movies for free:

Done linking your accounts? Now all your movies are together in one place—enjoy the show.

Logical

It's like I've always said--people just need more common sense. But not the kind of common sense that lets them figure out that they're being condescended to by someone who thinks they're stupid, because then I'll be in trouble.

Eminem blasts Donald Trump in new freestyle

by Jason Kottke
Dan Jones

Click through to watch the video

In a freestyle rap that aired at the BET Hip Hop Awards last night, Eminem blasted Donald Trump for his racism, false patriotism, deceit, and disrespect of military veterans, among other things. Watch it if you haven’t…the man is angry, as are many of us. The lyrics to the freestyle are on Genius:

He says, “You’re spittin’ in the face of vets who fought for us, you bastards!”
Unless you’re a POW who’s tortured and battered
‘Cause to him you’re zeros
‘Cause he don’t like his war heroes captured
That’s not disrespecting the military
Fuck that! This is for Colin, ball up a fist!
And keep that shit balled like Donald the bitch!
“He’s gonna get rid of all immigrants!”
“He’s gonna build that thing up taller than this!”
Well, if he does build it, I hope it’s rock solid with bricks
‘Cause like him in politics, I’m using all of his tricks
‘Cause I’m throwin’ that piece of shit against the wall ‘til it sticks
And any fan of mine who’s a supporter of his
I’m drawing in the sand a line: you’re either for or against
And if you can’t decide who you like more and you’re split
On who you should stand beside, I’ll do it for you with this:
“Fuck you!”
The rest of America stand up
We love our military, and we love our country
But we fucking hate Trump

As you can read, Eminem is really calling out his white fan base here, something that Elon James White mentioned in this Twitter thread:

So basically Trump, a grade A troll just got trolled by a bigger more experienced troll. Eminim trolls every album & he chose 45 this time. White dudes who thought Eminem was [their] voice, all angry and White at home right now like [What do I doooooooooooo!?] And y’all know Eminem is petty. If 45 responds he’ll have 3 diss tracks in a week. If 45 doesn’t he will be shat on as weak AF & a punk. And a lot of White folks who may have been sitting this whole shit storm out just had their fav rapper call them dafuq out.

White also addressed the misogyny and homophobia in Eminem’s music:

And as for his music catalogue of misogyny and homophobia…
.
.
.
That empty space is called me not defending ANY of it one bit. Notice I didn’t say “everyone should go buy Eminem albums!” “SUPPORT THIS ARTIST!” I was commenting on the freestyle & how it will play. I haven’t bought an Eminem album since I was a young punk. But my support or lack thereof doesn’t negate his skill or his platform.

SmithFly Shoal Floating Tent

by Erin Carstens

We've seen tents in the trees, so why not tents on the water? The Shoal tent combines the floating fun of an inflatable raft with the after hours coverage of a sealed, waterproof canopy. That I sure hope is stronger than my tendency to toss and turn close to the edge of the "rafttress" could be.

Shoal Tent maker SmithFly has designed their 8' x 8' inflatable raft to accommodate a packable, and also inflatable tent. No tent poles are required for canopy setup. Inflated, the heavy duty fabric topper secures to the raft with hook and loop closures and has window and door panels fitted with #8 zippers.

The raft portion of the Shoal Tent has 3 air chambers, 2 in its lower tube and 1 in the structure. Its bottom is a 6" thick drop stitched high pressure floor that doubles as an air mattress for sleeping.

Inside the Shoal Tent you'll have room for people up to 6'3" tall to both stand and lie down. When not in use the raft and canopy pack into a burrito roll approximately 60" x 24" x 18". Total Shoal Tent weight is 75 pounds.

Essential releases kernel source and WiFi driver, which may spark ROM development

by Dima Aryeh

The Essential Phone is a fantastic device with its fair share of issues. It comes from a small, new company with no experience in building a smartphone, so growing pains are to be expected. But the lack of ROM development for this phone so far has been a hindrance despite the unlockable bootloader.

Thankfully, the company is fixing this. Essential has released the kernel source and WiFi driver for the device, meaning ROM development can now begin. On top of that, factory images are coming soon.

If you’re interested in taking a look, hit the source link to the new open source section of the Essential site. We hope to see developers embrace this device much like a Nexus, because the PH-1 isn’t so different from a Nexus. Yes, that was a camera joke.

4Kids 4Ever

4Kids 4Ever

Before anyone mentions it, yes I am aware that Funimation was responsible for Hell being rebranded as HFIL (Home for Infinite Losers) in the Saban dub of Dragon Ball Z, and not 4Kids. I just felt that the line fit perfectly since 4Kids is synonymous with bad anime edits in the West. Their butchering of One Piece and Pokémon is proof alone of that.

AIM discontinued on December 15, 2017

by Dan Jones

I can’t really believe this. I’ve had an AIM account for two decades. It was my main method of communication with my friends in high school. Admittedly, I haven’t actually used my account for probably nearly ten years, but I’m always logged in.

Definitely a sad day.

T-Mobile and Sprint are reportedly in final merger talks

by Evan Selleck
Dan Jones

This can't possibly happen.

Rumors of a merger between T-Mobile and Sprint have cropped up from time to time, but it’s starting to look like the latest batch of reports might actually pan out to something real.

Bloomberg is reporting that T-Mobile and Sprint are currently in the final stages of merger talks and an announcement could be made when both wireless carriers announce their quarterly earnings at the end of October.

The report indicates that both companies are going through the process of due diligence, weighing the options when it comes to exchange ratio which will aim to determine Sprint’s valuation. This is essentially one of the last steps that they need to go through before the final merger is announced. Of course, this is an intent for a merger, because there will still be regulations both companies will need to pass before the move is finalized and approved.

This is certainly not the first time that it’s been speculated that T-Mobile and Sprint would bring their forces together, but this time around it may actually happen.

What do you think of the possibility of T-Mobile and Sprint merging?

REST versus GraphQL

by Chris Coyier

I think the jury is in: GraphQL is a winner for developers consuming APIs. We format a request for the exact data we want, and the endpoint coughs it up. What might have been multiple API requests and manually stitching together data, is now one in just the format we want.

I've heard less about whether GraphQL is ideal for the providers of those APIs. I imagine it's far easier to cache the results at specific URL's with a REST structure, as opposed to a single URL in charge of any request. But I'm no server guru.

This tool is pretty fascinating in that is allows you to build your own little GraphQL backend and then run queries against it and see the results.

Google Pixel Buds—wireless headphones that help you do more

by Adam Champy

What if your headphones could do more than let you listen to your favorite music? What if they could help you get things done without having to look at your phone? What if they could help you answer (almost!) any question just by asking, or even help you understand someone speaking a different language?

We wanted to make a more helpful pair of headphones, so today, we’re introducing Google Pixel Buds. These wireless headphones not only sound great, they are seamless to use and charge, offer help from the Google Assistant, and have a few extra smarts so you can get the answers you need while keeping your eyes up.

Blog_Apollo_3GRP-T_v08_SIMP.jpg

Fit them, charge them, pair them—made simple

From getting the right fit, to keeping them charged, Pixel Buds are really simple to use. They’ve got a unique fabric loop, making them comfortable, secure, and quick to adjust without having to swap out pieces. We put all the audio controls into a touchpad on the right earbud, so there aren’t any buttons hanging on the cord. Just swipe forward or backward to control volume and tap to play or pause your music. Charging and storing them is easy—they nestle right into a pocket-sized charging case that gives you up to 24 hours of listening time*. And pairing them is a cinch. Just open the charging case near your Pixel or Android phone running Android 7.0 Nougat or higher with the Assistant, and your phone will automatically detect them and ask you if you want to connect.

Get help from the Google Assistant with just a touch

Blog_Apollo_F_Left-Right_Blue_simp-v04.jpg

Pixel Buds bring Google smarts right to your ears, with answers and intel that would make James Bond jealous. Touch and hold the right earbud to ask your Assistant to play music, make a phone call, or get directions, all without pulling out your phone. If you have an upcoming meeting or you’re waiting on a text from a friend, the Assistant can alert you to a calendar event or incoming message, and even read it to you if you can’t look at your phone at that moment.

Be multilingual with Google Translate and Pixel

Pixel Buds can even translate between languages in real time using Google Translate on Pixel. It’s like you’ve got your own personal translator with you everywhere you go. Say you’re in Little Italy, and you want to order your pasta like a pro. All you have to do is hold down on the right earbud and say, “Help me speak Italian.” As you talk, your Pixel phone’s speaker will play the translation in Italian out loud. When the waiter responds in Italian, you’ll hear the translation through your Pixel Buds. If you’re more of a sushi or French food fan, no need to worry—it works in 40 languages.

170824_Apollo_2GRP-TTQ-RS_Oreo_simp-v03.jpeg

Pixel Buds come in three colors—Just Black, Clearly White and Kinda Blue—to match your Pixel 2. They’ll be available in November for $159 in the U.S. and are available to pre-order today. They’re also coming to Canada, U.K., Germany, Australia and Singapore in November.**

With Pixel Buds, we’re excited to put all the power of the Google Assistant into a pair of headphones you can take with you everywhere, so you can easily control your tunes, get walking directions to the nearest coffee spot or have a conversation with someone from another country without ever pulling out your phone.

*Total listening times are approximate and are measured using fully charged Google Pixel Buds and a fully charged case for the first Pixel Buds re-charge cycle. Actual results may vary.  Pixel Buds battery testing conducted in September 2017 on pre-production Pixel Buds connected to a pre-production Pixel 2 phone.

**This device is a prototype unit in Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, and Singapore and cannot be marketed, sold, leased or distributed until it complies with applicable essential requirements and obtains required legal authorizations.

Logical Fallacies Poster

by Erin Carstens

The Logical Fallacies Poster! Finally, ladies! A gift for every man you know. And finally, dudes! A gift for every woman you know. Teachers, a wall-mountable token for your students. Constituents, a mailing-tube-shippable reminder for your politicians. The only one here who doesn't need a poster to tell them if their arguments are disjointed, irrational, nonsensical, and outside the laws of logic is the AI in the copy room who's about 4 posts away from taking over my job.

Created by Jesse Richardson, Andy Smith, Som Meaden, and Flip Creative, the Logical Fallacies Poster provides concise explanations of 24 different tactics people use to try to win arguments or prove their point. The tactics can make their presentation of information sound smooth, authoritative, and "good." But as logical fallacies, or patterns of reasoning that fall apart and are rendered invalid when dissected (or expanded upon), those spewing them are really just feeding their audience a big ol' pile of BS. Sometimes knowingly, sometimes not.

Ahem, anyone who posts anything on the internet ever.

The Logical Fallacies Poster is available as a free PDF download, or you can order one in a 16" x 24" and 24" x 36" print.

On Seneca Village, torn down to make way for Central Park

by Jason Kottke

Seneca Village

Written and illustrated by Ariel Aberg-Riger, The City Needed Them Out tells the story of Seneca Village, a predominantly black NYC neighborhood destroyed in the 1850s to make way for Central Park. This article in the NY Times from July 9, 1856 expressed the city’s sentiment about the village and its inhabitants.

Your Pet's Nose Ring

by Erin Carstens

I'm all for loving your pet...and your pet's nose. But your pet's nose as a ring? Even if the sweet pup or kitty has moved on to taller trees and bigger litter boxes, I'm not sure wearing a sterling silver cast of their snout on your pinky finger is the best way to memorialize them. It's definitely the weirdest. And will guarantee you never forget Herbie, or his little snot organ. Eh, why not? We wear rings on our noses, why not noses on our rings?

And if we're going that far, why not nose nose rings? Can I get one of these pet noses as a nostril stud?

Rock My World, Inc. casts their pet nose rings from molds you make at home of your cat's or dog's nose. They'll send you a mold kit to use - they say it's pretty simple - and create a custom, one of a kind piece of jewelry from the results you mail back.

The ring itself is a single piece of silver, as opposed to a band with a separate honker adhered to it. If you couldn't tell by looking at it, Rock My World says twice in their listing that the pet nose rings are pretty chunky and heavy.

If you're not smellin' what Rock My World is cookin' with the ring memorial, or you need a gift for a pet lover whose ring size you don't nose, you can also have them cast a dog or cat's nose into a necklace pendant or keychain.

Anti-invitations for cancelled weddings

by Jason Kottke

Cancelled Weddings

For a NY Times piece on cancelled weddings, Jessica Hische created these anti-invitations in the style of fancy wedding invites.

My thoughts immediately went to fancy wedding stationery, and I had a lot of fun both writing and designing these fake anti-invitations. I tried to poke fun at some of the current trends in wedding stationery design, which meant I got to have fun playing with watercolors!
