Rebel Bass Guitar

No longer must you search the galaxy to find this Rebel Bass, but you will have to wait at least 3 months to get it. Last Fall, after photos of his custom Star Wars guitars had gone viral online, Englishman Doni opened up shop on Etsy to sell the grandaddy of his stringed sensations: the strummable Millennium Falcon. Now, despite the Rebel Bass' hefty price tag, fanboy orders have brought his handmade guitars' production speed down to well below warp. But if you've got the patience, you can still be one of a few people in the cosmos to own a fully functional P Bass-style guitar built into a plastic Millennium Falcon.

Doni notes the 4-string bass "produces a wonderful tone and with a half decent amp, you could amaze everyone by conquering all manner of riffs in less than 12 parsecs!" You can check out the video above and see if you agree. He recycles Millennium Falcon bodies from models issued between 1979 and 2004, and guarantees that they all range between good and perfect condition. To magnify both their galactic and rock & roll effect, he also installs a series of blue LEDs through the guitars, powered by a concealed battery pack.

Heroes Never Sleep Sleep Masks

Unless you're jacked up on the caffeine and dinoflagellates in Power Glow you may need some shuteye every now and then, but superheroes? Superheroes never sleep!* And now for a mere handful of US dollars, they are willing to cover your back, and your eyes, while you do. Lesha Limonov's Heroes Never Sleep masks stay on guard all night long, keeping watch over you as you recharge (i.e., sleep off the whiskey) and shielding you from evil encroaching light with their soft, pillowy touch.

Limonov, a graphic artist and illustrator from Minsk, Belarus, has created a trio of heroic snooze companions, all stylized in a whimsical, contemporary comic book aesthetic to differentiate them from run-of-the-mill superhero masks (and probably to avoid copyright violations). Take your pick from The Bat, Hal, and Spider, or go for the 3-pack and enjoy (not)Batman, (not)The Hulk, and (not)Spider-Man as a heroic triumvirate out to save you from a bad night's sleep.

*Spoiler: They just turn back into their alter egos. Wamp, wamp.

Amazon drops gendered categories for toys

by Jason Kottke

According to a friend of someone on Amazon's taxonomy team, Amazon has removed the gender taxonomy of toys and games. Here's the before and after:

Amazon Gender Toys

That's not to say you still can't shop for boys and girls toys on Amazon (jeez, those pages bum me out), but taking it out of the standard list of categories is a nice first step.

Now, how about you do something about this Amazon Mom thing? What's wrong with Amazon Family?

H2OVibe Showerhead with Bluetooth Speaker

Sure you can suction cup a waterproof Bluetooth speaker to your tile...and hope that it doesn't dislodge and whack you right in that tender spot on the downslope of your foot at the height of "Raining Blood." Or you can check out the H2OVibe, a speaker just as waterproof and just as Bluetooth-connected as other models, with the additional advantage of snapping right into its accompanying showerhead.

The H2OVibe Bluetooth speaker has a magnetic attachment for securing it in the center of the waterfall system overhead, and then removing for charging. Average playback time per charge is around 7 hours, with an LED reference light on the front of the speaker indicating when the battery is low (as well as when it's in Bluetooth pairing mode and when there's audio input from a Bluetooth device.) The speaker can pair with any Bluetooth compatible device at a distance of up to 33 feet.

For its part, the H2OVibe showerhead promises to rain down at 3 times the power of a standard showerhead. Installation shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Marvel Superhero Family Car Decals

Usually I hope a giant flock of pigeons craps on those cars with the stick figure family decals on them...unless the scene goes on to show T-Rex eating everyone...but I don't think I'd find these Marvel superhero versions of the smug happy family stickers so irritating. Definitely not enough to put in a request with the universe for piles of bird shit. And the first car I see that combines the stick figure family with T-Rex chowing down on them with Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, or Captain America swooping in to save the wife and children is getting a note with a big stick figure thumbs up under their windshield wiper from me.

The Marvel superhero decals include a sheet with 50 stickers and 25 unique characters divided into families Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Captain America. Sweet. Now all you have to decide is whether to stick with one hero line or hook up Spider-Man and Lady Wolverine. "Whoa! Honey! I said watch the adamantium claws around my Spandex suit!" Decal sheets include a dad, mom, sister, brother, dog, and cat hero version of each character.

Google+ Collections are live now

by Dustin Earley
Dan Jones

Will this cause anyone to use Google+ more (or at all)?

The signal to noise ratio is high on just about every social networking site under the sun. And everybody’s always looking for a good way to fix that. Google’s solution on Google+ is live now in the form of curated feeds known as Collections.

Google+ Collections are pretty straight forward. Collections are hand-curated feeds that are topically based. For example someone might create a “New York” Collection, and from there that person will add relevant posts about New York to that Collection. There are multiple ways to start a Collection  — by using a dropdown menu on posts or creating a custom Collection by visiting the Collections tab and entering in key words — but they all function the same. Once a Collection is created, the look can be customized to include pictures and different colors.

To view Collections others have started, just visit the Collections page on Google+. Of course the content and quality Collections are based solely on those curating the Collection, but Google+ has a wealth of passionate power users that are sure to provide noteworthy Collections for some time to come.

Web Mandelbrot

by Jason Kottke
Dan Jones

This is really cool, but it doesn't zoom indefinitely, sadly.

Mandelbrot

This web app allows you to explore the Mandelbrot set interactively...just click and zoom. I had an application like this on my computer in college, but it only went a few zooms deep before crashing though. There was nothing quite like zooming in a bunch of times on something that looked like a satellite photo of a river delta and seeing something that looks exactly like when you started. Netflix orders Green Eggs and Ham

by Jason Kottke
Dan Jones

Not sure how I feel about this. I love Dr. Seuess and I have not loved many of the recent adaptations.

Netflix is making a 13-episode animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham. The show will premiere in 2018 and the official press release shows that Netflix is fully committed to the premise:

Issued from Netflix headquarters.
Delivered straight to all reporters.

We'd love to share some happy news
based on the rhymes of Dr. Seuss.
Green Eggs and Ham will become a show
and you're among the first to know.

In this richly animated production,
a 13-episode introduction,
standoffish inventor (Guy, by name)
and Sam-I-Am of worldwide fame,
embark on a cross-country trip
that tests the limits of their friendship.
As they learn to try new things,
they find out what adventure brings.
Of course they also get to eat
that famous green and tasty treat!

Cindy Holland, VP of Original Content for Netflix
threw her quote into the mix:
"We think this will be a hit
Green Eggs and Ham is a perfect fit
for our growing slate of amazing stories
available exclusively in all Netflix territories.
You can stream it on a phone.
You can stream it on your own.
You can stream it on TV.
You can stream it globally."

For reference, here's an animated version of Green Eggs and Ham done in the 70s:

Pyle Pocket Projector with Built-in WiFi

Dan Jones

Very interesting. A pocket projector that's also an Android device.

The Pyle Smart Mini Pocket Projector couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a compact photo/video viewer, a laptop, a TV, or an MP3 Player, so it decided to be a true Renaissance Projector and conquer them all. In addition to its projection and multimedia features, the Pyle's built-in dual core processor, Wi-Fi, and Android 4.4 OS enable multi-tasking people with space constraints to use it just like a computer too.

The Pyle projection screen adjusts up to 120" for watching movies (or really big! PowerPoint presentations), and includes an air mouse along with its top panel laptop-style touchpad for navigation. Web connectivity via high speed Wi-Fi provides full Internet access for surfing and downloading Android apps. Ports on the back of the projector accept input from TVs, PCs, and gaming consoles for big screen viewing. There are also connection options for a USB flash drive, micro SD memory card reader, and HDMI mini port. Built-in Bluetooth tech supports wireless streaming of audio, video, and photo files.

The Pyle Smart Mini Pocket Projector works with iOS and Android devices.

Muchas danke to Manny for the Dude Product Tip.
