It’s easy enough to find movie quotes via Google, but it’s even easier via QuoDB, which tells you exactly where in the movie it’s from. Via Paul Ogden, who says “Amazing. I gave it one line from a movie I was watching and it instantly found the book it came from, with details.”

EverBlock Life-Size Building Blocks

Possibilities for building with the LEGO-like EverBlock line of life-size, completely modular and snap-together tiles stretch as high as you can stack the blocks. While standing on your tiptoes a ladder a roof the top of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. From room dividers and decorative walls to tables and desks to props and temporary installations for special events, the bricks bring the joys of tinkering and limitless creativity to life, and to practical use.

As a modular system, EverBlock structures are easy to modify, take apart, transport, and re-assemble as needed. Each brick is designed to pressure fit into the lugs above and below it, establishing a strong enough link between components that builders can even stagger blocks in 3" increments to create different patterns. EverBlocks are made of a hi-impact Polypropylene co-polymer ("no-break") with UV inhibitors added for outdoor use. They are hollow inside, but do contain support ribs for additional strength and to contribute to a tight fit with the connector lugs snapped below them.

EverBlock sizes include Full, Half, and Quarter. Full bricks measure 12" long x 6" wide x 6" deep (2.2. pounds), halvsies 6" long x 6" wide x 6" deep (1 pound), and quarters 3" long x 6" wide x 6" deep (1/2 pound). Each comes in about a dozen different colors for mixing and matching. Finishing cap blocks are also available should you want to add a flat surface to your finished creation. Blocks are priced and sold individually.

To build with EverBlocks you, well if you've ever laid eyes (or foot in the middle of the night) on a LEGO, you know how to build with these blocks: align each new block over the one below it and press down until you can't push any further. Read more about the building process here.

New Google device goes through FCC, might be updated Google Glass

by Dima Aryeh

There’s a new Google product that went through the FCC, and we don’t know what it is. It isn’t clearly defined as a smartphone or anything at all, but is simply a device that has WiFi and Bluetooth. In fact, it supports both 24.GHz and 5GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi as well as Bluetooth LE, which is pretty advanced.

There are a few things about it that hunt at it being the next Google Glass though. One is the FCC ID, which includes GG1. Google Glass 1 maybe? It will also feature a digital FCC label instead of a label that’s engraved on the device. The screenshot for this label is very similar to a Google Glass screenshot. Take a look.

GG1 FCC screenshot

Add on facts like you have to swipe to get to the FCC label and it has a non-removable battery, and it seems like you have the makings of the next Google Glass. Of course, nothing is official and it could be some new product we have no idea about. But it’s exciting to think that a new version of Glass might be coming soon, as the hype has died down considerably.

What do you think it is? And are you excited for Google Glass to make a comeback? Leave a comment!

Compasses don't work on Mars, so how do you navigate?

by Jason Kottke

Unlike the Earth, Mars and the Moon don't have strong directional magnetic fields, which means traditional compasses don't work. So how did the Apollo rovers and current Mars rovers navigate their way around? By using manually set directional gyroscope and wheel odometers.

While current un-crewed rovers don't have to return to the comfort of a lunar module, some aspects of the Apollo systems live on in their design. Four U.S. Martian rovers have used wheel odometers that account for slippage to calculate distance traveled. They've also employed gyroscopes (in the form of an inertial measurement units) to determine heading and pitch/roll information.

One of the fun things about reading The Martian is you get to learn a little bit about this sort of thing. Here's a passage about navigation on Mars where astronaut Mark Watney is trying to get to a landmark several days' drive away.

Navigation is tricky.

The Hab's nav beacon only reaches 40 kilometers, so it's useless to me out here. I knew that'd be an issue when I was planning this little road trip, so I came up with a brilliant plan that didn't work.

The computer has detailed maps, so I figured I could navigate by landmarks. I was wrong. Turns out you can't navigate by landmarks if you can't find any god damned landmarks.

Our landing site is at the delta of a long-gone river . NASA chose it because if there are any microscopic fossils to be had, it's a good place to look. Also, the water would have dragged rock and soil samples from thousands of kilometers away. With some digging, we could get a broad geological history.

That's great for science, but it means the Hab's in a featureless wasteland.

I considered making a compass. The rover has plenty of electricity, and the med kit has a needle. Only one problem: Mars doesn't have a magnetic field.

So I navigate by Phobos. It whips around Mars so fast it actually rises and sets twice a day, running west to east. It isn't the most accurate system, but it works.

I wonder why the rovers in the story weren't outfitted with directional gyroscopes and wheel odometers? (See also the operations manual for the lunar rovers.) (via @JaredCrookston)

Dog Pool Float & Lounger

Now that I've given you the rundown of your own best bets for summer water toys, I figured I'd throw a bone to Fido over there so he won't feel left out. But first I need a few minutes to find the tequila and toast myself on that stellar pun.

OK. That felt good. Frontgate's Dog Pool Float & Lounger is a sandwich of vinyl-coated fabric and nonporous foam that makes for an ultra-buoyant and puncture-resistant raft for your pet in the water, and a cooling bed for him alongside it. The mesh cover won't stain, fade, or mildew when wet and hot in the sun, but it will keep your pooch cool when dampened and inserted next to you and your giant hammock sunbed.

Floats come in Small (up to 20 pounds), Medium (up to 50 pounds), and Large (up to 80 pounds) sizes, and 10 different colors. Note: I'm not really sure how larger dogs that are too heavy to lift are meant to handle the mounting portion of pool chilling on the floats, but I guess that's their problem.

Pretty excellent

It’s as if Thor decided to have his own suit of Iron Man-style armor built. Amazingly, the suit is mostly leather–a few pieces are made from brass. And no, sorry, the suit is not for sale.

Today Is A Good Day To Wear A Klingon Sons Of Stovokor Denim Jacket

by Nicole Wakelin

Must have.

c3

If there were biker gangs in Star Trek, then the Klingons would be the scariest of the lot. This denim jacket makes you an honorary member of the Sons of Stovokor.

This jacket features the emblem of the Klingon Empire embroidered on the chest with a back patch which reads “Onward to Sto-vo-kor” in transliterated Klingon characters (well, technically “Sthovoqor” – it’s like a Klingon with a slight speech impediment said it – maybe as the result of a jaw broken in battle?) on the top and “It is a good day to die” in tlhIngan Hol beneath a Klingon skull and crossed bat’leths. This design is a ThinkGeek exclusive. The black denim is 100% cotton. Machine wash cold, inside out. Dry flat. Do not put in dryer. Imported.

Today is definitely a good day…to ride.
