The Series That Could Bring ‘Hey Arnold’ Back to Life

by Jon Negroni

hey arnold

It’s been almost 19 years since the first episode of Hey Arnold premiered on Nickelodeon, and it’s been 11 since the series ended. That’s a lot of time, and yet many people still remember and love this show. There are a lot of reasons for that.

Hey Arnold was created by Craig Bartlett, who wrote Rugrats and married the sister of the guy who created The Simpsons. He even voiced some of the characters. And in many ways, Hey Arnold was and remains unlike any other cartoon on television.

It was about a fourth-grader named Arnold growing up in a fictional (and unnamed within the show, though it’s later called Hillwood) with his friends. The city was a mashup of familiar locations like Seattle, Chicago and New York, but it built its own identity as a believable location without ever needing a label (much like how Arnold himself never needed a last name).

hey arnold

Arnold lived with his grandparents in a grungy boarding house with a couple that fought all the time, an international spy, a hotheaded construction worker, a Vietnam refugee (that Christmas episode, though), and many others. The show put effort into exploring all of these relationships, as well as the lives of Arnold’s close friends at school.

These school kids were such well-developed and interesting characters that the show routinely featured them in their own episodes, some without any hint of Arnold himself. Characters like Harold, Eugene, Sid, Gerald, and even Stinky all had well-written episodes devoted to them. It’s hard to think of any other show on any network that his such a big catalogue of characters with rich backstories.

But much of the show’s success and impact is due to how comfortable the show was with exploring the lives of the girls at this school, not just the boys. Rhonda, Phoebe, and of course, Helga, all had many episodes of their own, despite Hey Arnold being originally conceived as a show for young boys.

hey arnold

For this reason, everyone had a reason to like Hey Arnold. If you didn’t really care for Eugene’s accident prone problems, you could always wait for the next episode about Rhonda learning humility and having to wear glasses. Or watch Arnold befriend a man who can fly with pigeons in one of the most surreal, yet metaphysically enthralling, episodes it ever made.

Hey Arnold is, without a doubt, a unique show that deserves all of the nostalgic praise it gets. But how did it end?

The show was famous for raising lots of questions without ever paying off the answers. While some mysteries, like Arnold’s last name, were never revealed, other curious story arcs developed slowly over time, like the origin of Arnold’s parents and whether or not Helga would ever tell Arnold how she feels.

Or if Brainy ever got his head checked.
Or if Brainy ever got his head checked out for internal bleeding.

It wasn’t until years into the series that the episode, “Parents Day” finally gave viewers an answer to where Arnold came from and what happened to his parents, Miles and Stella. We found out that they were wilderness explorers who traveled the world like Indiana Jones and Lara Croft (Stella even wore a shirt right out of Tomb Raider).

But some time after Arnold was born, they vanished during an expedition to San Lorenzo, leaving their baby in the hands of his grandparents.

Years later, the series offered even more insight into what specifically happened to Arnold’s parents in the last episode that was ever produced (though more episodes were later released that happen before “The Journal”).

hey arnold

Arnold found his father’s journal, which revealed a lot about his parents’ adventures. He learned that they journeyed back to San Lorenzo (where Arnold was born to help a mysterious tribe known as the “Green Eyed People,” whom they had befriended years earlier. Stella was a doctor, and the Green Eyed People had been stricken by a disease. Since Stella and Miles were the only people they trusted, the parents had to leave Arnold and go save them.

They never returned, of course, but Arnold found a map in the back of the journal. The series actually ended with Arnold telling this to his grandparents, implying that the story was not over. Nickelodeon was going to produce a movie called Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie to finish the series, but they ended up making Hey Arnold!: The Movie instead, which was based on the planned TV special, Arnold Saves the Neighborhood.

The movie made a lot of money, but fans weren’t very pleased.

hey arnold
Concept art for “Hey Arnold!: Jungle Movie”

Nickelodeon was planning on making another theatrical release for “Jungle Movie” despite the unsuccessful first attempt, which is why they produced “The Journal” to set it up. But disagreements between Bartlett and Nickelodeon caused the complete end of the series, including the movie.

Basically, Nickelodeon demanded that Bartlett only create shows for their network, but he refused because he was working on a series for Cartoon Network.

As a result, Hey Arnold and its finale movie were cancelled.

hey arnold
OK, fine, here it is.

For the longest time, I thought this was a sign of a theory I had about Arnold and his grandparents. Basically, I just assumed that none of these things about Arnold’s parents were true because they were so fantastical. They reminded me of the dream sequences Arnold would have in the first season, which positioned him as a more imaginative kid.

So when “The Journal” came out, I started to think that Arnold’s grandparents had planted that journal and even the photos. And I believed that they invented the story to make Arnold feel better about his parents abandoning him or passing away tragically.

But this theory is false. Bartlett was clearly working on a movie that debunks that, as we have ample concept art and plot lines that have been leaked over the years. There was no “hidden story” here for us to bother discussing.

hey arnold

Over the years, fans have clamored for Bartlett and Nickelodeon to revive the movie and finish the series strong. Despite rumors since 2012  that this could happen, no one has said anything official, which means it will likely never happen, and that’s not surprising.

In Nickelodeon’s defense, they’d be spending a lot of money to do a movie that most of its current audience wouldn’t have any previous knowledge of. At this point, only millennials like me remember this show, and many of us are too old to spend money on a Hey Arnold movie (besides me and probably anyone reading this).

We’ll probably never know what happened to Arnold’s parents, but there is one other massive plot thread that did get confirmed, and it’s sort of depressing. Unfortunately, Helga and Arnold never end up together.

Remember All Grown Up? The Rugrats spinoff that aged the characters and followed their lives as preteens and basically ruined Nickelodeon’s flagship series after two surprisingly decent seasons?

Well, the same thing was planned for Hey Arnold, but without Arnold. It was centered around Helga as a teenager at age 15, and it was simply called The Patakis. A fun surprise is that the show was deemed too dark for Nickelodeon, so it was planned to debut on MTV. Sadly, it never got off the ground.

hey arnold
Fans aren’t ready to give up quite yet.

The kicker is that in this spinoff, Helga has somewhat moved on from Arnold. For unexplained reasons, Arnold moves away from the city (maybe to live with his parents in San Lorenzo), so The Patakis would have focused only on Helga and some of the other characters from P.S. 118.

We don’t know much about the show, but Bartlett and other sources have given us small peeks at what could have been. Helga and Arnold apparently dated for a while, but they broke up. She’s still crazy about him when the show starts, and she writes him letters every night that she’s too scared to actually send. Her new “Arnold shrine” is now a binder with all of these letters.

Seriously, imagine how seriously interesting it would have been to watch an older Helga move on from Arnold and find something else in her life to hold onto, besides the unrequited love of a kid who showed her love at the lowest point in her life. It would have done wonders for this character.

This “updated” Helga wants to write books and still has that grumpy edge to her. She still has the unibrow (thankfully) and even the classic pink bow under her cap. The pilot is about how Olga has become the black sheep of the family in pursuit of an acting career. Her father, Big Bob, is selling cell phones now instead of beepers, and Miriam is in AA (apparently our suspicions were correct in assuming there was another ingredient in those “smoothies”).

Other Hey Arnold characters were planned to be in the show, including Gerald and Phoebe as a stable couple, Sid, Stinky, and even Brainy.

hey arnold
Assuming he survived this long.

Like Legend of Korra, this series could have been a fresh start built from the legacy of a previous series. In fact, I could still see the series happening since it wouldn’t necessarily have to rely on fans of the original show to fuel it. Just look at how other nostalgic favorites like Boy Meets World and Full House are being revived on Disney and Netflix.

So perhaps one day we will get the answers Bartlett has been keeping from us likely for the sake of his own sanity. In a world where Kickstarter and social media campaigns dictate the next craze derived from our unwillingness to let go of our respective childhoods, The Patakis is more than a safe bet.

After all, if Generation X gets to see Transformers turn into four incredibly mediocre movies, then why can’t we get just a season of our favorite football head? Or at least his girlfriend.

Cocoon Tree

Cocoon Trees could be tents. Or they could just be hangouts. Time outs. Nap outs. Whatever, and wherever they are the spherical structures will definitely stand out.

Cocoon Tree frames are made of lightweight aluminum that is then covered in a sturdy waterproof tarpaulin. Suspended they are rigged with ropes and secured by nets. Total weight is pretty low at around 130 pounds, so I guess the chances that a Cocoon Tree will plummet to the earth with you in it are pretty low too.

In addition to suspending your cocoon in a tree, you can also install it on the ground with its set of adaptable feet. Or keep the adventure going by setting it on a floating platform, or fixing it on a post driven into the bottom of a lake.

Cocoon Trees are made to order according buyer input on size and top/bottom tarp colors. As evidenced by the photos, they are strong and stable enough to accommodate a dining table or a giant round bed with Beetlejuice pillows and a model pretending to sleep sexily.

AT&T to demand Android phones feature FM radios by 2016

by Dima Aryeh
Dan Jones

Interesting. There are definitely times I think it would be nice to have a radio in my phone.

Most Android smartphones contain a hardware FM radio receiver that’s bundled with radios such as Bluetooth and WiFi. But for the US market, they’re often disabled. It’s been the case many times where the international version of a device had an FM radio but the US version didn’t. AT&T is going to fix that.

The carrier is requesting that all Android devices in its lineup feature a functioning FM radio by 2016. Music streaming services with tailored online radio stations are dominating and radio isn’t exactly people’s choice in music listening these days, but it could be critical in a disaster, where FM radio might be your only source of news when cellular and TV networks are down.

In the end, it’s an extra addition that won’t hurt but may help, so good on AT&T. What are your thoughts on this story? Leave a comment!

Block Tile Puzzle: Tetris Reinvented

by Claudiu

Block Tile Puzzle: Tetris Reinvented by Claudiu ( claudiu )

Block Tile Puzzle is a game that retains some of the original Tetris gameplay but adds a completely different way of handling the tiles and gameboard.

Block Tile Puzzle is a super-addictive game where the goal is to clear as many blocks as possible and achieve the highest score before there's no more free space left on screen. You have a 12x12 grid and you must place the random sequences of block tiles with the purpose of creating a horizontal or vertical line of 12 full blocks without any gaps. The more lines you clear at once, the higher the score multiplier. This game is reminiscent of Tetris but reinvents the way you interact with the tiles.

Here are the features that make Block Tile Puzzle highly addictive:

  • Easy Gameplay. It features a simple gameplay (Tetris-style) but it is challenging to actually achieve a high-score. The goal is to clear as many full lines at once to get the highest score multiplier, though if you overdo it you'll end up with a full space board and game over.
  • Simple Controls. Incredible easy to move the tiles, just tap on the random shape and drag it wherever you find a good spot to fill. Each tile is randomly generated using a smart algorithm to make gameplay more interesting.
  • Reward System. You receive points for each dropped block and a higher score when you clear full lines. This way you can enter the leaderboards and compare your score to your friends', plus receive achievements for various goals.
  • Themes. There are two themes to choose from, by default a dark one is used but you can easily switch to a light one if you feel it suits your eyes better.
  • Graphics & Sounds. Graphics are incredibly clean with sleek animations that allow you to focus on the game itself.

With Block Tile Puzzle there's no rush as in the original Tetris game, the focus is on calculating the tile placement to clear as many full lines as possible in a single move.

Google's Visual Translation Supports 20 New Languages

by Alex Chitu

Google bought Word Lens last year and brought a very useful feature to Google Translate: real-time visual translation. Use a phone or a tablet running Android or iOS, point the camera at a sign or text in a foreign language and Google will translate the text almost instantly, while preserving all the other details. It's like using a magic camera that translates text and lets you read street signs, restaurant menus, user manuals, newspaper articles even if they're written in foreign languages.

Visual translation now supports 20 additional languages. "You can now translate to and from English and Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Filipino, Finnish, Hungarian, Indonesian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian. You can also do one-way translations from English to Hindi and Thai." Back in January, the feature was launched with only 7 supported languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

This feature requires to pick the right languages before tapping the camera button and one of the languages must be English. You'll probably be prompted to download a small language pack, since you can use Word Lens offline.

Google Research Blog has more information about Word Lens. After finding the text regions in the picture, Google recognizes the letters using a convolutional neural network. "Letters out in the real world are marred by reflections, dirt, smudges, and all kinds of weirdness. So we built our letter generator to create all kinds of fake 'dirt' to convincingly mimic the noisiness of the real world—fake reflections, fake smudges, fake weirdness all around." After recognizing the letters, Google translates the text taking into account that text recognition might include mistakes, then it "renders the translation on top of the original words in the same style as the original". Google actually erases the original text using the colors surrounding the text and draws the translation using the initial foreground color. It's quite clever.

Here's a funny demo:

Not possible currently in CSS, but there is a discussion happening around syntax like:

Amazon and Google offering nice Chromecast deals

by Alex Wagner

If you’ve been thinking about picking up a new Chromecast, Amazon and Google have offers on the little stick that might make you pull the trigger.

First up, Amazon is offering a free $10 Amazon gift card with the purchase of a Chromecast, which is $29.99. Simply add both the Chromecast and the gift card to your cart, and the cost of the gift card will be subtracted at checkout. This offer is valid through 11:59 pm PT on August 9.

The Google Store has a Chromecast offer of its own. If you buy two Chromecasts at once, Google will knock $15 off of your total. The Chromecast is $35 at the Google Store, so with this promo, your total will be $55.

Google will also give you a free Google Play move rental when you buy and set up a Chromecast by December 31, so that’s another bit of motivation to pick up a Chromecast.

Chromecasts can come in handy for getting content from your phone or tablet onto your TV, so it may not be a bad idea to take advantage of Google’s offer and outfit your home with Chromecasts. But if you really only need one, you could grab Amazon’s deal and get a gift card in the process. Because you know that you’ll eventually need to buy something from Amazon.

Do you like to avoid waiting? Do you like to avoid people in general? Google’s got your back with the latest update to Google Search. When searching for shops and restaurants, Google will show you the busy times and when the lines are longest.

With the new feature, you can check out graphs of the busiest times on specific days of the week. This will allow you to avoid as much human interaction as possible! Plus, you won’t have to wait in line as much. It’s definitely a very useful feature, so check it out! Search for your favorite shop and see if it’s one of the millions supported.

Legolas is perfect.

Lord of the Rings as Anime Fan Art

Ever wondered what it might look like if LotR was anime? Well, artist kittykatkanie made this awesome Lord of the Rings / Durarara!! mashup fan art! Here's what she said about it...

"I just made one huge pic, and moved it upward with flash lol Simple enough, but it took 5 days to complete everything... And the figures are mostly traced from the original ending from the anime "Durarara!!"

So the characters in order: Frodo, Sam, Black Rider (with water horse), Elrond, Strider, Boromir, Pippin, Merry, Gimli, Legolas, Aragorn and Arwen, Gandalf, Saruman, and the Dark Lord.

Just couldn't resist drawing Sauron in human form (a.k.a Annatar) PJ's ver. of Annatar was white (or he was just glittering), but I like him black XD"

LDS Movies on Netflix

by Larry Richman

LDS-related-movies-NetflixThe blog Chicken Scratch n Sniff has updated its list of LDS-related movies currently on Netflix.

The author has recently updated her list by checking Netflix’s lists of upcoming and soon-to-be-removed movies for June, so all the movies on her list should be around for at least the next month, if not longer.

Below is a partial list. See her article Watch these LDS Movies on Netflix Tonight! for the full list.

MEET THE MORMONS (PG)

Meet the Mormons examines the diverse lives of six devout members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints found around the world including the U.S., Nepal, and Costa Rica.

17 MIRACLES (PG)

Grab the tissues because this movie will probably make you cry. A mix of true experiences from the Mormon Pioneers crossing the plains (Martin and Willie handcart companies).

JOSEPH SMITH: PROPHET OF THE RESTORATION (NR)

This movie doesn’t flow like other movies, rather it’s a combination of all the events of the restoration. My kids were shocked when they saw the scenes with the tar and feathering and other persecutions. It was good for them to learn about how much the early saints had to suffer through and why they chose to do so (especially Joseph Smith). However, it is something to be aware of so you can talk about it together.

SARATOV APPROACH (PG-13)

A true story of 2 LDS missionaries kidnapped and beaten while serving in Russia. It really shows how you can still have faith and hope in the face of such a great trial. It might make you cry as well. This movie is not ideal for young children because it is such a serious and intense movie.

SAINTS AND SOLDIERS: THE VOID (PG-13)

The newest Saints and Soldiers movie is available for streaming on Netflix. Jesse Owens struggles with racial prejudice among his own team as he tries to help them all survive. Takes place at the end of World War II.

SAINTS AND SOLDIERS:AIRBORNE CREED (PG-13)

A group of American paratroopers risk their lives after landing in enemy territory to save a group of French resistance fighters. Takes place during World War II. Keep in mind these are war movies so there will be shooting and blood.
SAINTS AND SOLDIERS (PG-13)

The first of the Saints and Soldiers movies- all based on real events during war. This one is about a small band of Allied soldiers trying to survive behind enemy lines. One of them is a U.S. soldier that had previously served as a missionary in the same area. During the movie they are trying to get information back to their supervisors so they can save thousands of lives.

FOREVER STRONG (PG-13)

The star rugby player is sent to a reformatory for a DUI. While he is serving his sentence, a tough rival coach allows him to play for his team. This movie is said to show the importance of good values and making champions out of each player not just a champion team.

MITT

A Netflix original. See behind the scenes during Mitt Romney’s two presidential campaign runs. Gives insight into what it really takes to go into politics.

See the article Watch these LDS Movies on Netflix Tonight! for the full list.

Named Places in Google Maps

by Alex Chitu
Dan Jones

Cool

The latest version of the Google Maps app for Android lets you add private names for places. Search for an address or drop a pin on the map, tap the 3-dot menu icon and pick "Edit name". You can add a name that lets you quickly find the place on the map, just like you can find "home" or "work". The private name is saved to your Google account and you're the only one who can see it.

Here's an example for a local business (this feature is even more useful for places that don't have a name in Google Maps):

To edit a name or delete it, open the side menu and tap "Your places". At the top of the section, you can find the named places, including "home" and "work".

Google Maps also has a new interface for location history: it's called "your timeline" and it's available on the web and in the Android app. "Your Timeline allows you to visualize your real-world routines, easily see the trips you've taken and get a glimpse of the places where you spend your time. And if you use Google Photos, we'll show the photos you took when viewing a specific day, to help resurface your memories," informs Google. You can customize the timeline by removing places or adding private names. This feature still requires Location History, which can be enabled or disabled from Google Maps, Google Settings or My Account.

Inflatable Floating Bathtub

Bathtime anytime! This portable inflatable bathtub fills up for sudsing up in front of the TV, outside the RV, even on the lake. Because, yes, it also floats. And with a zip-up top cover to keep the water warm, built-in cup holder to keep you hydrated, and an inflatable laptop stand to keep you occupied, once you settle in to this blow-up basin o' relaxation, not even comprehensive neck-down pruniness will be enough to drag you back out.

In other words, this is a portable inflatable bathtub, and it's kind of weird.

People with injuries, nurses and caregivers who have trouble transporting patients up and down stairs to a proper tub, or athletes looking for a quick ice bath might actually find the tub invaluable in certain situations. And I'm serious about it floating on water, so if you live on a boat or want some attention for your novelty raft, I guess it could be a legit purchase in those cases too.

The inflatable bathtub package also includes a 4' accordion drain hose, a Coghlan's electric pump for fast inflation, and a Quik Solve bath net for quick drying and storage.
