September 12th, 2015: /r/DegreesToHitler - A gentle reminder of how close we all are to being literally Hitler.

Dan Jones

Today's subreddit of the day is ...

/r/DegreesToHitler

1,924 budding Führers building a new Reich for 1 year!

In some respects, the darker corners of history need to be taken seriously, and with respect; in some other respects, with our modern perspective, they need the ever-living piss taken out of them. As a result of this, a group has emerged with a simple, yet lucrative game: degrees to Hitler.

This game has a few basic, universal rules:

  1. Choose a random Wikipedia page.

  2. Click on any link in said article.

  3. See how few clicks it takes to get to a certain infamous German chancellor.

As well as these rules, there are a few popular permutations used on the subreddit:

  • Hard mode, where none of the links you click can be a country.

  • Expert mode, where no proper nouns may be used.

  • Themed mode, where one of the links must follow a certain theme designated by the OP.

The OP posts their solution in the comments, including each link they used; the fewest clicks are generally perceived as the best solutions, although occasionally interesting and novel solutions are given greater credit.

To give you an idea of some of the zany routes people take, here are a few select puzzles:

Who knows, maybe a few of you might find even quicker routes! To gain a little more insight into this peculiar modern sport, we've interviewed the mods of the sub!

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

/u/Zukamimotu - I started the sub based off this post. I enjoy playing the game, and most of my free time is spent browsing reddit and playing video games. I seldom post because I prefer reading other people's creative solutions over sharing my own.

/u/SaintKairu - Well, I'm Zukamimotu's brother, so there's some good 'ol fashioned nepotism around here. But really, I kinda just browse reddit, play games, and make sure everything in this sub is good and dandy.

/u/Josh_The_Boss - I was reading through this thread, and recognizing that it was initially a joke sub, sent /u/Zukamimotu a message along the lines of "I can haz mod pls??" (Before anyone tries, this probably won't work anymore.) Offline, I'm a student, and I spend my free time practicing archery, playing vidya, running, and binging TV shows.

/u/PowerOfGamers01 - I found out about this subreddit when my friend told me about it. I posted here for a while before I apply. Later I joined the sub when the mods need a CSS guy, I like the degrees to Hitler game and its a great way to past time while fixing the CSS.

2. If you had a Wikipedia page, what would be the quickest route to Hitler?

/u/Zukamimotu - If I had a Wikipedia page, I'd probably have to answer Zukamimotu > United States > Germany > Adolf Hitler. That probably disappoints some of our more "hardcore" players who prefer hard mode, but going to a country page is my first solution every time.

/u/SaintKairu - I suppose that depends how in depth my wiki article is. If it includes family heritage, it might just be SaintKairu > Germany > Hitler.

/u/Josh_The_Boss - Ask me this in 20 years. It'll be easier to get there when I'm the leader of the free world.

/u/PowerOfGamers01 - The quickest way is the War and peace book, War and peace > Louis XIV of France > European history > Hitler. This might be hard in Hard mode.

3. Have you got any favourite/unexpected examples?

/u/Zukamimotu - My favorite post was probably this one. When I saw BDSM was the starting point, I honestly laughed out loud. Many of our users are incredibly creative with their starting points.

/u/SaintKairu - There was one that wanted you to go from Comcast to Hitler while passing through Literal. I thought that was incredibly creative, and the fact that somebody found a path was crazy.

/u/Josh_The_Boss - This is a cool one, because it shows the lateral thinking abilities of our community. I even got to Hitler from colgate.com in the comments, per request of a member. That was fun.

/u/PowerOfGamers01 - My favourite post was the Literal post. Its shows that anything can be linked to Hitler.

4. Which way of playing do you enjoy most? [hard mode/normal etc.]

/u/Zukamimotu - Like I referenced in answer 2, my personal favorite is normal. I sometimes play in hard mode, but I'm so laughably bad at it that I never end up sharing my solutions.

/u/SaintKairu - Hard mode's probably my favorite, but I don't post my solutions since I've usually been out-done by the time I finish. Some of our subscribers are crazy good at this.

/u/Josh_The_Boss - I like normal mode, because it makes me reminisce back to the days of grade school computer days, when we had to resort to playing Wikipedia games after every flash website got banned. However, I don't like reading the comments section, because I realize someone found a solution in half the moves I made it in. I've never given out so many bitter upvotes in my life.

/u/PowerOfGamers01 - My favorite game mode is hard mode. Its a great challenge for the game and a good way to go though more pages with out just one or two pages.

5. How does it feel to be Subreddit of the Day?

/u/Zukamimotu - It feels magnificent! I started the subreddit sort of as a joke, but to see it grow into something that will be featured on Subreddit of the Day is incredibly. We absolutely couldn't have gotten this far without our awesome mod team. Seriously, they're all great.

/u/SaintKairu - Pretty cool. It'll be nice to get some more activity in the sub, as well as some creative starting points.

/u/Josh_The_Boss - Bizarre. Like I said, this was initially a joke sub, so to see it evolve to the point its at today is a great feeling.

/u/PowerOfGamers01 - It feels nice for this subreddit to become SROTD, however I was only here for one month so most of the credit should go to the other mods for getting the subreddit this far.

6. Any closing comments, or interesting things you want to highlight/advertise?

/u/Zukamimotu - We are planning a Star Wars themed event around the time that Episode VII comes out; we haven't worked out the specific details yet, but hopefully some of you can join in!

That's all folks! As always, check out the subreddit, play a few games, and if you like it, maybe consider subscribing to it. Until next time!

Google begins rolling out Android Pay today

by Evan Selleck
Dan Jones

I'm really disappointed in this split between Google Wallet and Android Pay.

When Android Pay was originally announced, it sounded like a very different product. It sounded like it would be a backend that allowed for multiple payment platforms (Google Pay, PayPal, etc.) could use to enable mobile payments.

All it is, it turns out, is a breakaway from Google Wallet.

Google is just shaking up their services for no apparent reason.

Android Pay was made official not too long ago, and while Verizon Wireless may have assumed that the mobile payment option would be launching on September 16, it looks like Google is ready to start the ball rolling now. With an official blog post, the company has announced that it has begun rolling out Android Pay today, September 10.

In the post, Google goes over the basics of Android Pay as a refresher of sorts, outlining that the mobile payment option works with the major card issuers, including Visa, Discover, MasterCard, and American Express. Google also says that Android Pay works at over one million (“and counting…”) locations across the United States, which includes retailers like Babies ‘R’ Us, GameStop, Bloomingdales, Rite Aide, Sports Authority, Petco, and many others.

To access Android Pay, you’ll need to have NFC enabled on your Android 4.4 or later device.

Google outlines the security benefits of using Android Pay, too, saying that your credit or debit card’s information is never sent along with the payment you make, instead using a virtual account number in its place for an “extra layer” of protection.

Do you plan on using Android Pay?

New Google Wallet app launches with new UI

by Dima Aryeh
Dan Jones

But the new app doesn't have my loyalty cards, which is the one feature of the current app I use the most.

Why, Google, do you keep getting rid of the products and features that I use the most?

Google has decided to update the look and function of the Google Wallet app, but instead of updating the old app, Google just made a new one. This new Google Wallet app can be downloaded separately and won’t overwrite your current one, so you’ll have to hit the source link to check it out.

Like the old app, you can send and receive money as well as manage your Google Wallet card. But this one has a new UI featuring the color of cash, which replaces the old blue interface.

What will happen to the old app? Google says that it will be updated to Android Pay, like to get it out to everyone while Google Wallet takes a backseat as a new app. This means Android Pay will be launching in just a few days. Let us know how you like the new app!

Star Wars Bed

If you're a kid who gets this bed you're one of the lucky ones: your dad might actually love you as much as he loves Star Wars. While I'm not sure rabid fans of The Force think as highly of Pottery Barn Kids, for better or worse that's the company Lucasfilm decided to license in the making of this galactic place of rest.

Both the head and foot of the Millennium Falcon cockpit bed are handpainted with (loose) replicas of the ship's knobs and gauges. The entire Star Wars piece is made of solid hardwood, measuring Twin size at 108.25" long x 45.5" wide x 45.5" high. Just big enough for Dad to squeeze into bed with Jr. when he has a nightmare about eating Wookiee BBQ or The Force Awakens' release date getting pushed to 2017.

Amazon is no longer selling the Fire Phone

by Nick Sarafolean

It was a long time coming, but Amazon has finally burned through the last of its Fire Phone inventory. The company revealed the Fire Phone in summer of 2014 with much talk about its unique features, such as a 3D UI based on how you looked at the phone. Sadly, the Fire Phone didn’t deliver on expectations, with too many gimmicks combined with a high price.

After taking a big hit with the lackluster Fire Phone sales, Amazon tried to move through its inventory with loads of sales and price cuts. It tried cutting the price down to $0.99 on contract with AT&T and this summer, it dropped the off-contract price to $159. That final price cut seemed to do the trick, as many picked up the Fire Phone in large part due to the fact that it came with a free year of Amazon Prime, a $99 value.

Amazon has now listed the Fire Phone as currently unavailable with the disclaimer that it doesn’t know when it will be back in stock. That seemed final, but an Amazon spokesperson has confirmed that the company has indeed sold out of its stock of the Fire Phone, with the final units being sold at the end of August.

Goodbye, Fire Phone. You were naught but a candle in the wind.

Playlist: Simon and Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits (Entire Album)

By

Simon & Garfunkel

About the artist

Simon & Garfunkel were an American folk rock duo consisting of singer-songwriter Paul Simon and singer Art Garfunkel. They were one of the most popular recording artists of the 1960s and became counterculture icons of the decade’s social revolution, alongside artists such as the Beatles and Bob Dylan. Their biggest hits—including “The Sound of Silence” (1964/1965), “Mrs. Robinson” (1968), “Bridge over Troubled Water” (1969), and “The Boxer” (1969)—reached number one on singles charts worldwide. Their often rocky relationship led to artistic disagreements, which resulted in their breakup in 1970. Their final studio record, Bridge over Troubled Water, was their most successful, becoming one of the world’s best-selling albums. Since their split in 1970 they have reunited several times, most famously in 1981 for the “The Concert in Central Park”, which attracted more than 500,000 people, the seventh-largest concert attendance in history.

The duo met as children in Queens, New York in 1953, where they learned to harmonize together and began writing original material. By 1957, under the name Tom & Jerry, the teenagers had their first minor success with “Hey Schoolgirl”, a song imitating their idols the Everly Brothers. Afterwards, the duo went their separate ways, with Simon making unsuccessful solo records. In 1963, aware of a growing public interest in folk music, they regrouped and were signed to Columbia Records as Simon & Garfunkel. Their début, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., sold poorly, and they once again disbanded; Simon returned to a solo career, this time in England. A remix of their song “The Sound of Silence” was played widely on U.S. AM radio in 1965, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Simon & Garfunkel reunited, releasing their second studio album Sounds of Silence and touring colleges nationwide. On their third release, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966), the duo assumed more creative control. Their music was featured in the 1967 film The Graduate, giving them further exposure. Bookends (1968), their next album, topped the Billboard 200 chart and included the #1 single “Mrs. Robinson” from the film. After their 1970 breakup following the release of Bridge over Troubled Water, they both continued recording, Simon releasing a number of highly acclaimed albums, including 1986’s Graceland. Garfunkel also briefly pursued an acting career, with leading roles in two Mike Nichols films, Catch-22 and Carnal Knowledge, and in Nicolas Roeg’s 1980 Bad Timing.

Simon & Garfunkel were described by critic Richie Unterberger as “the most successful folk-rock duo of the 1960s” and one of the most popular artists from the decade in general. They won 10 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Their Bridge over Troubled Water album was nominated at the 1977 Brit Awards for Best International Album and is ranked at #51 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
