Netflix To Block VPN Access

Netflix wants to make sure you watch TV its way.

The company said in a blog post today that in coming weeks it would begin blocking so-called VPN proxies (VPN is short for “virtual private network”), servers that let users get around content licensing restrictions limiting where movies and shows can be viewed.

“We are making progress in licensing content across the world and, as of last week, now offer the Netflix service in 190 countries,” says David Fullagar, Netflix’s vice president of content delivery architecture, “but we have a ways to go before we can offer people the same films and TV series everywhere.”

'We have a ways to go before we can offer people the same films and TV series everywhere.' David Fullagar, Netflix

For Netflix, this is a bold move. Users around the world have long used VPN proxies to access Netflix when it wasn’t available in their countries at all. And Netflix, it seemed, turned a blind eye in the same way that it does for users sharing account passwords. An executive even denied rumors last January that the company was cracking down on VPN usage.

But now the legit version of Netflix is available pretty much everywhere (except China), and the company is trying to protect its investments, both in content and infrastructure. At the same time, it’s sending a signal to content creators everywhere: we’ll play these geographical games for now. But in the future, TV is going to be global.

The Content Play

Netflix invests heavily in licensing content from networks and studios around the world. Those deals include restrictions that give Netflix the right to stream movies and series only in agreed-upon countries. Netflix’s terms of service explicitly state viewers can only use its service in the country where a user has an account, and that the company will “use technologies to verify your geographic location.”

This is not new. So why is the crackdown happening now? As Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos has said, the content distribution market is splintered. Networks and studios have long sold rights to different buyers for broadcasting in different markets. Netflix is trying to change that by buying global content rights.

“If all of our content were globally available, there wouldn’t be a reason for members to use proxies or ‘unblockers’ to fool our systems into thinking they’re in a different country than they’re actually in,” Fullagar says.

For the company, this may be a way to put pressure on content distributors. Want your shows to be streamed There’s a demand for them, and we’ll pay for it, but you have to give us the global rights. By enforcing the content licensors’ rules, Netflix is meanwhile showing a willingness to compromise in the meantime. But the opportunity to reach the global audience Netflix is setting out to command may be too good for studios to pass up. If a worldwide television network exists, and you make TV or movies, wouldn’t you want to be on it?

Meanwhile, in the short term, blocking VPN proxies could very well elevate Netflix’s originals. In certain parts of the world where Netflix is newly available, the company’s third-party content offerings may feel limited. Netflix’s originals, however, are high-quality shows and films that have proven successful around the world already. And since they belong to Netflix, the company can show them wherever it chooses. By blocking users elsewhere from accessing more content available in, say, the US, it can funnel new users towards its originals, which helps build Netflix’s global brand not just as a deliverer of content, but as a maker.

The Long Game

Most of all, however, the move may be a sly way of targeting a much-desired audience in a very special place: China. According to UK research firm GlobalWebIndex, Netflix’s service was accessed by 21.6 million users in China via a VPN proxy in late 2014. (For context, the company has more than 70 million paying subscribers.) If that figure is right, that means there’s a very real demand for the service in China. By restricting VPN access, Netflix may be trying to put pressure on regulators in the country (who themselves are reportedly fans of Netflix originals like House of Cards) to give the Chinese access to its service.

But the crackdown on VPNs may also backfire. Netflix, after all, is a consumer brand, and consumers in, say, the Philippines aren’t going to be happy to learn that they won’t be able to watch the shows and films that were able to view just last month. This ill will might lead fewer consumers to sign up to pay for the service in their home country (especially if the offerings are worse than what a user could have accessed via VPN). The crackdown could also encourage more piracy of both Netflix and Hollywood’s content instead, which is exactly what Netflix should be hoping to avoid.

Netflix, however, is playing the long game. CEO Reed Hastings seems hopeful that one day the content on Netflix will be the same all around the world. That’s the dream. But to get there, the company needs everyone to compromise, at least for now. Building a global television network, it seems, can’t happen with the flick of a switch.

A story about timestamp and timezone

by CommitStrip
Dan Jones

At my last job, when I got there, they were using a CMS that modified the timestamp in order to display the time according to the correct timezone, rather than using PHP's builtin timezone functions. There were ALWAYS problems, and if they had just built it right to begin with, we wouldn't have had any problems.

NES30 Pro Bluetooth Game Controller

Dan Jones

Pretty cool.

It's not just wireless, it's also universal. Sort of. You can't use this NES30 Pro Bluetooth controller to play games on any platform, but you can use it to finger yourself to victory (errr...maybe I'll reword that when I have more time later) across several of them. The retro-inspired controller has modes to make it a PC or Android joystick, a Bluetooth keyboard, an iCade manipulator, an Emu-Touch Screen, a Wii remote, a Wire USB controller, and a 360 Xinput. The portable NES30 can also combine with other NES30s on iOS/Mac for use in multi-player mode.

Despite its nostalgic appearance, Maker 8bitdo Tech says the NES30 has 2010s capabilities, with Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, a rechargeable 480mAh battery, and a high-speed CPU that will deliver zero lag time. Future expansions will be easily accessible too via the unit's upgradeable firmware.

Get your NES30 Pro Bluetooth Game Controller for 26% off for a limited time from Dude Exclusives.

Pizza Scissors

I have acquired some choice props and accessories throughout my quest to assemble the baddest ass Super Bowl 50 party known to mankind:

Now all I need are the winning Powerball ticket to pay for it all, and these Pizza Scissors to cut and serve my homemade crispy-crust-oozy-red-sauce pies. The stainless steel blades snip smoothly through bodies of dough, cheese, and meat, and then catch the dismembered slice on a plastic spatula so you can serve it untouched, without a stringy cheese battle, and without risk of a toppings mudslide.

Inside the vault: A rare glimpse of NASA’s otherworldly treasures

by Eric Berger

HOUSTON, Tex.—Building 31 on the campus of Johnson Space Center lacks the Tower of London’s majesty and history. No Queen’s Guard stand outside. But this drab, 1960s-era building is nonetheless where NASA keeps the crown jewels of its exploration program. Inside various clean rooms, curators watch over meteorites from Mars and the asteroid belt, cosmic dust, samples of the solar wind, comet particles, and, of course, hundreds of kilograms of Moon rocks.

In late December, Ars spent a day visiting these collections, including the rarely accessed Genesis Lab. While our request for a Moon rock keepsake was sadly rebuffed, we nonetheless got a VIP tour of every astromaterial NASA has collected from other bodies in the Solar System and beyond. With Senior Space Editor Eric Berger providing the words and Senior Technology Editor Lee Hutchinson capturing the photos, we can now offer an unprecedented look at how NASA protects its rarest and most valuable off-world samples.

To start, we wanted to see the famous Mars rock.

Google experimenting with nearby, what’s hot and recent searches in Google Search

by Sean Riley

It seems that Google is playing with some new functionality for Google Search to kick off the new year, Reddit user tyler_shaw24 has posted some images of his Google Search after installing the January security update on his Nexus 6P and Recent Searches, What’s Hot and Nearby options now appear below his last search.

Nearby is focused on finding restaurants, gas stations, ATMs or coffee shops based on your current location.

Google-Search-Nearby

Recent Searches — wait for it — shows your recent searches, which has been the default behavior for Google Search to date.

recent-Google-Search

Finally, we have a what’s hot option that shows some current trending Google searches.

whats-hot-google-search

Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to check out the feature ourselves, as this would appear to either be a truly experimental feature that not everyone will see or it is slowly rolling out and won’t hit all devices for some time.

What do you think of these options? Would you find this more useful than simply seeing recent searches by default or are you happy with Google Search as it is now?

EHang 184 AAV - Life-Size Rideable Drone

Dan Jones

10 miles isn't enough to get me to work. :-(

EHang cut its teeth on drone manufacturing a couple years ago with the GHOSTDRONE, a quadcopter they dub "smart" and "the easiest drone to fly in the world." But now it's 2016. Smart and easy to fly are standards. EHang needed something bigger and better to impress audiences at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas. Something that could compete with Parrot and DJI. No, even bigger and better than that. Something that could compete with Toyota and GM. EHang decided to go from smart, smartphone-controlled, cinch-to-pilot drone to a full-on Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV). The EHang 184 AAV is a life-size drone. A drone with a cockpit for a human passenger. A drone that flies itself.

EHang says it created the 184 with the goal of "providing Medium-Short Distance communication and transportation solution[s]." The giant quadcopter's main structure is built from composite material, carbon fiber, and epoxy, plus additional areas of aluminum alloy. It has 8 propellers, 1 on the top and bottom of each arm. It is 100% electric.

The 184 AAV was designed as an autonomous commuter. A self-driving car that doesn't have to contend with traffic. Or any infrastructure whatsoever. EHang, which debuted a working prototype at CES, says the drone can carry a single person weighing up to 260 pounds anywhere within a 10-mile or 23-minute flight time vicinity. Without pilot input. Without crashing. The drone is supposedly designed such that it will operate a safe and normal flight plan even if one portion of its power system is functioning abnormally. And if multiple components malfunction or disconnect, it is programmed to land immediately in the nearest place possible. We'll see.

184 AAV "pilots" operate controls only to take off, pause flight, and land the craft. They also use an app to tap in where they want to fly. The "smart" system takes care of everything else. We'll see.

Drone interior features include air conditioning, a 4G data connection, and a small storage compartment for a briefcase or an SOS parachute.

The Room 3 arrives on Android, puzzler fans rejoice

by Sean Riley

The Room series is one of the most celebrated in mobile and the latest installment, The Room 3, is available on Android today for $4.99.

For those unfamiliar with the series, it involves solving a series of elaborate puzzle boxes, but a description really can’t do it justice. The detail of the puzzles and the well-realized atmosphere of the games are a big part of their success. These would be excellent games whether on mobile or not, but the tactile experience of probing to solve the puzzles on a touchscreen means they are perfectly suited to mobile.

I just downloaded the game myself, so I can’t personally speak to what Fireproof Games has done to up the ante for the third installment, but reviews of the iOS version (available since November) indicate that the game is both more expansive than the previous offerings, with about 6-8 hours of gameplay to reach the end and multiple endings possible.

There is a storyline that carries through the games, so if you haven’t played the previous games, you should snatch them up The Room for 99 cents and The Room 2 for $1.99 before trying your hand at the newest release.

Google Cast Ready Speakers from Big Brands Are Coming This Year

by Joey-Elijah Sneddon
Google Cast speakers from beoplay

Bang & Olufsen’s BeoPlay range will support Google Cast

New Cast Ready speakers from several leading audio brands will launch over the course of year, say Google.

Google Cast technology already powers the Google Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices as well as other electronic equipment, including the Nexus Player (which runs Android TV) and some Sony & LG sound bars.

Google Cast allows audio equipment manufacturers to add a widely supported technology to their hardware, ready to handle streams from Spotify, Pandora, NPR Radio, YouTube and an ever-growing set of other popular streaming services.

It’s fast becoming the common standard for internet connected audio systems, able to add new and novel features through software updates — something standard bluetooth-based speakers either don’t or, in some cases, can’t do.

More Google Cast Ready Speakers & Sound Bars Coming

Sony and LG already ship the tech in a range of its speakers and sound bars. In 2016 a host of other big names in the audio hardware space, including B&O (BeoPlay), Philips, Pioneer, and Harman Kardon, are joining in the musical jamboree.

Cast Ready sound equipment will also shortly receive multi-room audio support, as was recently added to the Chromecast Audio puck. Multi-room audio enables you play a single audio stream across multiple speakers, in sync, and no matter their position in your house.

With a broader range of hardware support and neat new features, Google Cast for audio is well on its way to becoming a cheaper alternative to the successful Sonos sound system.

Adding to the strong sales of the Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices with a range of additional hardware options should help put an even greater spotlight put on the streaming platform, and help foster features and uses, and greater support from apps and service.

Britney Spears' Guide To Physics Is Still The Best Science Website From 1999

Image: Britney Spears' Guide to Semiconductor Physics

At the dawn of the millennium, something beautiful and weird emerged from the era’s cultural detritus and made it onto the then-burgeoning internet: Britney Spears’ Guide to Semiconductor Physics, found via the unassuming URL britneyspears.ac.

The site featured pages of information on everything from the basics of how semiconductors work—for example, how materials like silicon can be “doped” with impurities to carry an electrical current, and are the basis of modern electronics—to entries on the “finite barrier quantum well” and “photolithography”.

All of it is allegedly written by Britney Spears, whom the site casts as being a physics genius as well as a pop star. But in reality, the site was was created by a young theoretical physics post-grad at the University of Essex named Carl Hepburn.

It’s sort of like InfoSec Taylor Swift, but for physics instead of cybersecurity, and from a time when we thought wearing neckties like belts was a good idea.

Hepburn thinks the site went up in 1999, though Archive.org's earliest cache is from 2000. In any case, it wasn’t until 2001 that it went viral and caused a sensation in the media. Even Spears’ record label gave the site their blessing. Fifteen years later, the guide is still up, vintage glamour shots of Spears and all.

"Unless I have some brilliant idea in physics or do something else that becomes as well known it will probably be the only thing that people remember about me"

I wondered what Hepburn could be up to all these years after his internet 1.0 creation went viral, so I sent an email to the address listed on the site (hotmail, natch). To my surprise, Hepburn emailed me back.

Hepburn isn’t a physicist anymore—he says he “ran out of time and money”—and he has no clue about who’s famous these days. Instead, he’s a web developer with a three-year-old son, who’s following in his dad’s footsteps. Hepburn tells me that his son already knows the periodic table of elements.

“I have no regrets about setting up the site,” Hepburn wrote me in an email. “Unless I have some brilliant idea in physics or do something else that becomes as well known it will probably be the only thing that people remember about me.”

Besides shoring up his legacy, Hepburn says he’s paid to keep the site live for all these years in the hopes that people will still learn something from it. It’s also often mentioned in job interviews, he told me, which isn’t surprising for a web developer, and probably explains why the site contains a link to his CV. But it really does seem like Hepburn cares more about education than he does job prospects; he runs another site, Splung (gross), that contains reams of esoteric explanations of topics in physics, written by Hepburn, but without all the Britney pics.

Hepburn (middle) graduating with his master's degree, along with two colleagues. Image: Britney Spears' guide to Semiconductor Physics

Today, Britney Spears’ Guide to Semiconductor physics exists as a living relic from a time gone by, and Hepburn says it should stay that way. He’s not going to try and repeat his earlier success any time soon.

“I am such an old fogey that I have no idea who is famous today and in 2015, there are so many websites and such a lot of content written on Facebook that I think it would just get lost,” Hepburn wrote, adding that if you want to make educational content these days, YouTube is probably a safer bet.

“There is a lot more luck than judgment than people realise when something goes viral.”

Man With Weapons Arrested In Plot To Kidnap The Obamas' Dog

By Julie Zauzmer and Spencer S. Hsu January 8 at 5:25 PM

A man who plotted to kidnap one of the Obama family’s pet dogs was arrested in the District on Wednesday with a cache of weapons and ammunition in his car, the Secret Service said.

Upon his arrest, Scott D. Stockert, 49, of Dickinson, N.D., made a series of outlandish claims to officers — that he was Jesus Christ, he was the son of John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, he planned to run for president, and he was there to kidnap Bo or Sunny, the Obamas’ dogs, the Secret Service said in a court document.

[The political message of the presidential pets]

According to a filing in D.C. Superior Court, the Minnesota field office of the Secret Service first learned of Stockert’s intention to kidnap one of the Obamas’ Portuguese water dogs.

[Forget posing with the president. It’s all about selfies with Sunny and Bo.]

After Stockert drove his pickup truck from North Dakota to New York to Washington, Secret Service officers found him at a Hampton Inn, 901 6th Street NW, the court document said.

When agents asked him whether he had any weapons, he told them he had two firearms in his truck and directed them to the truck.

Agents found the two firearms under the backseat — a 12-gauge pump shotgun and a bolt-action .22-caliber rifle. They learned that he was not registered to own a gun and arrested him, the court document said.

They also found more than 350 rounds of ammunition, a billy club and a machete with a 12-inch blade.

Stockert was charged with carrying a rifle or shotgun outside his home or place of business, which is illegal in most cases in the District.

At a preliminary hearing Friday, a judge found probable cause for the case to move forward. The judge ordered that Stockert be released to a high-intensity supervision program pending a court date to be set later.

During his release, Stockert cannot possess any real or imitation weapons, or go near the White House or Capitol, the judge ordered.

Heated Chip & Dip Tray

Dan Jones

So, fondue, basically.

Yeah I want some heated queso. That stays heated from dip 1 to dip 100. And now that you mention it, I would be amenable to some peripherally warm tortilla chips too. Why is the Heated Chip & Dip tray not a staple at all parties? In all homes? At every meal? One place you are most 100% definitely going to see it is at my Super Bowl 50 party. Five decades of football championships, meet 5 hours of steamy, oozy, clump-free cheddar and pepper jack. I'm ringing in this quinquagenary* right.

The Heated Chip & Dip tray includes a partitioned melamine dish and stoneware crock, the latter of which sits over a heating base. The base plugs into any 110v outlet. For cold apps, you can also remove the base and place the temperature-absorbing crock in the fridge or freezer prior to serving.

*Yes, "quinquagenary" is an actual term for a 50th anniversary. Yes, I Googled, "What is a 50th anniversary called?" while I was writing this post.

Bimek SLV - The Sperm Switch (NSFW)

Condoms or Dr. Snip. It's slim pickin's for dudes in the contraception department. And condoms are kinda lame due to the whole desensitization thing. And a vasectomy is kinda lame due to the whole sterilization thing. The Bimek SLV, though? Not lame at all. Dubbed the "Sperm Switch," the Bimek SLV is a device currently in development that will give men complete control over their own fertility.

The Bimek SLV is a spermatic duct valve system that switches on during sexy time to inhibit the outflow of sperm (read: instant contraceptive; no one's getting pregnant), and then switches back off when the fun wraps up, returning sperm movement to normal. The result: a happy ending that stays happy because it doesn't result in 18 years of child support. Unless that's what you want. Unlike a vasectomy, the implanted Bimek SLV does not affect your fertility unless you flip it on, and does then only for the duration of valve blockage. Flip it back off and you're instantly back to your normal studly, seed-laden self. Here's how it works:

During a 30-minute outpatient surgery one Bimek valve is mounted on each of your spermatic ducts in the scrotum. A rocker switch is "installed" as well. When you toggle the switch on (just use your fingers), the valves block sperm cells (but not semen) from escaping, rendering you sterile. Temporarily. Completely temporarily. Flick the SLV on and off as you please (i.e., as you are being pleased) with no effect on fertility.

The Bimek SLV system is implanted for a lifetime of sperm-shooting self-regulation, and requires no supplemental use of hormones or medication for either men or women. It weighs 2 grams and is about the size of a gummy bear. While creator Clemens Bimek is still in the research stages of making the contraceptive available to consumers, they do have the product developed and produced, and are seeking some volunteer testes subjects to help prove its safety and effectiveness. Want to sign up? Follow the link below to learn how, or to invest in the Bimek SLV mission.
