Cops filmed behaving badly say pot shop’s camera illegally recorded raid

by David Kravets

Did you hear the one about the cops not wanting to use a store's surveillance tape to help solve a crime?

Who could blame these Santa Ana cops? Video shows them smashing surveillance cameras, badmouthing a woman in a wheelchair, and perhaps even munching on marijuana-infused products after they stormed a medical marijuana shop in Southern California, which was being investigated for allegedly operating unlawfully in the city.

Newswire: Prince is releasing his new album exclusively through Tidal

by William Hughes

After briefly toying with Spotify’s poor, broken heart, Prince has doubled down on his commitment to Tidal, the Jay Z-backed music platform, announcing that his latest album will be released exclusively through the service. HITNRUN, the artist’s third album as the leader of 3rdEyeGirl, will feature the previously debuted “HARDROCKLOVER,” and is set to drop on September 7.

Prince and Tidal have been working together for a few months now, with the Purple Rain-maker streaming his Baltimore-based “Rally 4 Peace” concert exclusively through the service, and subsequently pulling the majority of his musical catalog off of all of its rival streamers. He feinted toward a softening on his exclusive stance last month, when he released a new single, “Stare,” on Spotify, but it’s now looking like that was just the musical equivalent of riding his motorcycle past an ex-girlfriend’s house, just to remind her of ...

At Collins Gallery Show, Homeless Youth Compile A Survival Guide to the Streets of Portland

by Jenna Lechner

On any given night, roughly 4,000 women and men are homeless across Portland, and as many as 400 of them are homeless youth living on the streets.

Here to help is Survival Guide to the Streets of Portland, a powerful show at the Central Library's Collins Gallery. It's a product of the youth of p:ear. Short for "project: education, art, recreation," p:ear is a nonprofit that works with homeless youth aged 15-24 via creative mentorship.

The Collins Gallery show includes screenprints and large paper skull masks with infographics taken from a Multnomah County study on the city's homeless done last year. The prints give off-the-cuff insights like, "Go to college, it's a great place to dig through the trash," and "Carry keys to avoid incarceration." They were created in conjunction with the Independent Publishing Resource Center, during a series of workshops. (P:ear has partnered with a long list of local businesses and artists in the past, including New Seasons, Por Qué No, and artists like Jesse Reno, Blaine Fontana, and Y La Bamba.)

Man films cop, who quickly unholsters his weapon for no apparent reason

by Cyrus Farivar

In the most recent incident involving authorities, filming, and firearms, a new viral phone video from California depicts a bizarre situation where a local police officer unholsters his weapon at a man for no apparent reason.

The video was taken by Don McComas, of Rohnert Park, California, about 50 miles north of San Francisco. The five-minute film was posted to YouTube on August 3, and it shows a Rohnert Park police SUV slowly approaching McComas on what appears to be a quiet residential street. In the YouTube notes, McComas wrote that it all started when he was out in front of his house, hooking up his boat to his car.

Parked and seated behind the wheel, the officer seems to be taking a picture of McComas with his own cellphone after two minutes. The cop exits the car and approaches McComas, telling him to "take his hand out of his pocket." The officer then unholsters his weapon, pointing it at the ground most of the time (although he appears to start to raise it).

Retailers should ditch “men’s” and “women’s” departments and embrace genderless fashion

by Shelly Banjo
Blurred lines.

Gendered fashion is on the way out. Fashion designers are mixing menswear and womenswear on the runway. Parents are pushing for genderless clothing that allows little girls to, say, wear science-themed t-shirts instead of princess dresses. And Quartz fashion writers are asking: “Sex and gender aren’t perfectly binary. Why should clothes be?”

To be sure, retailers like Gap, the North Face, and American Apparel have sold unisex clothing for years, though sizing is still typically cut across gender lines.

But moving toward a less gendered retail experience could also be a “business opportunity for retailers who create a comfort zone for people who don’t want to subscribe to one category,” writes market researcher NPD Group in a new e-book (pdf).

NPD argues that retailers could benefit from moving past the old-fashioned store layouts once designed to comply with increasingly outdated notions of gender roles (although it falls short of providing conclusive proof that consumers would actually buy more if stores dissolved the gender division).

Still, the argument makes sense. If men and women are going to wear the same pair of Converse or Vans sneakers, why stock them in separate “his” and “hers” sections of the store? If a woman shopping in a department store prefers the clothes in the traditional men’s section, does she have to lug them down to another floor just to try them on? Should a retailer give up on potential sales by alienating a woman who doesn’t want to shop in the men’s department?

Some retailers are already moving in that direction. While Personnel of New York maintains “women” and “men” sections on its website, it also has a tab featuring genderless clothing and accessories called, simply, “Everyone.”

Just this week, Target announced that it was phasing out gender-based signage after customers complained that marketing products by gender was regressive and unnecessary. Target said it would remove signs in the home goods and entertainment aisles that delineate which products were meant for boys or girls, as well as the use of pink, blue, yellow, or green paper on its shelves in the toy aisles.

British department store Selfridges recently did away with gender-based shopping in a concept store called Agender, which aims to “transcend the notions of ‘his’ and ‘hers,'” according to its website, with genderless clothes from more than 40 designers. So far, business has been good enough that Selfridges is considering creating a stand-alone store, reports Details.

The store’s experiment hints that the appeal isn’t limited to women who want to escape the stylistic confines of conventional femininity.

“In fashion, more and more we are seeing physically masculine men wearing what might traditionally be thought of as feminine,” Linda Hewson, Selfridges’ creative director, tells Details. “Function and individuality are now more important than a uniform idea of what’s conventionally appropriate.”

Reputable [vintage Japanese] motorcycle mechanic?

Can anyone recommend a good, reliable, motorcycle mechanic with experience working on vintage Japanese bikes?

Usually do all of my work myself, but I currently don't have a place to do it. I took my bike to a shop in SE this spring to get work done, but it's just sat and I fear it will continue to sit while my money has already been spent.

Hoping to find someone that can transport the bike out of the 'bad shop' and into their shop, and get the work done.

I'm aware of Doc Brown - any others? Anyone of you out there have a home shop and need a new friend to use your tools in exchange for beers, rides, and conversation?

Rebellious teenage tortoise briefly crawls to freedom

by Claire McNear

An 80-pound tortoise tried slowly and, for a time, successfully to gain its freedom in Florida this week.

Zulu made it half a mile into the western frontier before he was recaptured.

"When he gets his mind going and he wants to leave, he just goes," said Zulu's owner, who was alerted by social media to the tortoise's capture and went to pick up the 18-year-old reptile.

"The tortoise turned his head toward her," reports the Miami Herald, "but didn’t move."

Perhaps he just needed wheels?

Soccer team scores on accident after injury, lets opponent equalize on purpose

by Jacob Price

Often in soccer when a player goes down injured, a team will play the ball out of bounds to allow the injured player to receive medical treatment. Once everything is taken care of, the opposing team plays the ball back out of sportsmanship. That's exactly what this Doncaster Rovers player was trying to do here.

WHOOPS! HE SCORED! Surprisingly, there's no rule against this, but Doncaster decided to be nice and allow the easiest goal in the history of soccer to be scored against them.

It's no secret that the defending in early-season soccer matches is pretty terrible, but this takes it to a whole different level. Big shoutout to the keeper there who clearly thought for a second about abandoning the plan and stealing a win. He wussed out though and the game ended in a 1-1 draw, but a win for sportsmanship.

Warner Bros. Reportedly Wants Batfleck for a New Bat-Trilogy After Seeing Him in Batman v Superman - Batfleck Beyond.

by Dan Van Winkle

great

Ben Affleck’s performance as Batman in Batman v Superman was allegedly so stirring that Warner Bros. already wants to shape DC’s film universe around him and crank out three more Bat-films. Or at least that’s what they want people to think.

Den of Geek claims that at a private screening of an early cut of the upcoming superhero crossover flick, Warner Bros. execs loved Affleck as Batman so much that he got a “standing ovation.” So, a far cry how basically the entire Internet expected his turn as the caped crusader to go.

Of course, this is all based on “anonymous sources,” but it’s a Friday in August and nothing else is happening (except a circus of a debate we’d rather not get too much further into), so let’s speculate wildly! Warner is apparently now interested in going full Spider-Man and giving Affleck a brand new trilogy of Batman films instead of just the already-known standalone film.

So after The Batman, where will this new trilogy go to separate itself from the well-trodden ground of the Batman canon? (I’ll wait for the laughter at the idea they’d worry themselves about covering new ground in a superhero reboot to die down.) Will Matt Damon play Robin? (Batfleck and Damin?) Will Batman finally get three consecutive good movies? Will Ben Affleck continue to play Batman so far beyond his BvS appearance that we’ll eventually get … Batfleck Beyond when he’s super old?

tumblr_n257qsSglg1qems7ao2_500

You know, after all that Internet outrage.

Do they hope everyone forgot about Affleck’s intro in the Mallrats opening credits? (Probably)

Only time will tell.

Creator of Man of Steel‘s Kryptonian Language Preaches About Fandom in New TEDx Talk - Christine Schreyer is a "language fangirl" and proud of it!

by Emily Gagne

Would you consider yourself a “language fangirl” (or boy)? Maybe not. But Christine Schreyer certainly is and she’s so proud of it, she just did a TEDx Talk about it, not only touching on what it means to be a fan (of words, of anything!), but also the importance of her specific fandom: the fandom of languages created and to be created.

If you’re not familiar with Schreyer by name, you may be familiar with her work. The anthropology professor (UBC Okanagan) is actually the creator of the Kryptonian language used in Man of Steel. She’s also done a ton of research on Avatar’s Na’vi language and the fans who have adopted it.

Schreyer’s TEDxTalk is a definite treat for anyone who is interested in learning about new languages, whether real or fictional, as she provides a ton of shocking facts about the disintegration of language due to lack of use over time. And those who might not identify as a “language fan” will enjoy her insights from her Na’vi research, plus her positive outlook on the development of new fandoms and the effect they can have on the preservation and creation of language, as well as learning.

Oh, and according to Schreyer, creating gifs, fanfiction and other fan art is a great tool for memory, so keep at it!
