Barack Obama might head back to Columbia University after his term—possibly as a professor

by Svati Kirsten Narula
Professor Obama?

This post has been updated.

With a little more than a year left in office, Barack Obama may be closing in on his post-presidency plans. An announcement yesterday (Aug. 31) by Columbia University president Lee C. Bollinger sent rumors about those plans flying. With previous rumors already suggesting that Obama was considering a move to New York City to teach at Columbia Law School, Bollinger said he’s looking forward to welcoming Obama back to campus in 2017.

According to the university newspaper, the Columbia Spectator, Bollinger did not say anything specific other than to suggest that the president (and perhaps the first lady) would have some sort of official presence at Columbia in the 2017 academic year.

President Bollinger just announced that @BarackObama and @MichelleObama will be returning to @Columbia next year.

— The Lion (@TheColumbiaLion) August 31, 2015

The university promptly responded to the rumors, saying that Bollinger had not made a big reveal. His comments, it said, reflected no further developments concerning Obama’s plans, but rather “reiterated the May 12 statement by the Barack Obama Foundation that it ‘intends to maintain a presence at Columbia University for the purpose of exploring and developing opportunities for a long term association.'”

Obama was previously a law professor at the University of Chicago. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia.

The White House also responded to the rumors, saying no decision had been made about Obama’s role at the university after he leaves office.

Tokyo wins Little League title, beating Lewisberry 18-11

firehose

baseball

With more than 42,000 fans cheering against them, the Tokyo players found themselves down eight runs in the first inning of the Little League championship game against Lewisberry, Pennsylvania.

That brought out manager Junji Hidaka's inner Yogi Berra and sparked a record rally that saw the Kitasua Little League pound out 22 hits in an 18-11 comeback victory in a battle of undefeated teams.

"I told the players it doesn't end until it ends," Hidaka said through a translator.

Tokyo responded with seven runs in the second, four in the third inning and five in the sixth.

Masafuji Nishijima had four hits and six RBIs, and Shingo Tomita hit two of Tokyo's five home runs.

Tokyo's third pitcher, Nobuyuki Kawashima, held Lewisberry in check most of the game, giving up just one run and two hits over five innings.

"Today my fastball wasn't going fast enough," said the 12-year-old, who lived for four years in California, and speaks fluent English. "I knew my breaking ball had to be on the corner, down low, where the batters can't reach too far or it just gets them off-balance."

It was the 10th title for Japan, second behind Taiwan's record 17. It's the third title for the Kitasuna Little League team, which also took home championship pennants in 2001 and 2012.

Tokyo had given up a total of 10 runs in its other tournament games, but Lewisberry scored 10 times and sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first after falling behind 2-0.

Lewisberry knocked out starting pitcher Daiki Fukuyama before an out was recorded in the first. Dylan Rodenhaber made his first hit of the tournament count, hitting the ball over the right-field fence for a grand slam. Jaden Henline added a three-run homer, a shot that went deep into the shrubbery in straightaway center field.

The Red Land Little League, which draws players from several central Pennsylvania towns around Lewisberry, scored three more times sending what amounted to a hometown crowd of more than 42,000 fans into a frenzy.

Fans of the Lewisberry team helped set a tournament attendance record of 499,964, well over the previous mark of 414,905 set in 2011 when a team from Keystone, Pennsylvania, was in the tournament.

Tokyo responded after their manager's pep talk. Yugo Aoki hit a three-run homer in the top of the second, which was followed with solo shots from twin brothers Kengo and Shingo Tomita.

Daiki Fukuyama added a two-run double up the middle to bring the Japanese back within a run.

Shingo Tomita tied it at 10 in the third inning with a solo home run to left field. Three batters later, Masafuji Nishijima hit a three-run homer to make it 13-10.

"They just put the bat on the ball," Lewisberry manager Tom Peifer said. "They hit pitches I've never seen kids, especially 12-year-olds, hit."

Lewisberry got one back in the bottom of the third. Braden Kolmansberger hit the ball over the head of Japan's center fielder and eventually scored when third baseman Koki Jo could not handle a slow roller by Henline.

The teams broke the previous Little League record of 23 combined runs in a championship game — a mark that had stood since 1947. Lewisberry's 10-run first inning also was a record, as was the teams' combined 30 hits. The eight-run deficit was the largest overcome in any Little League World Series game.

Tokyo had not won by more than two runs all tournament and had won its last two in the team's final at-bat.

It used the final inning in the championship game to add five insurance runs, highlighted by Kengo Tomita's triple that scored Aoki and opened the floodgates.

Pennsylvania came in with four World Series titles, but the last was in 1960 when a team from Levittown accomplished that feat. Lewisberry is the first in-state team to win the U.S. title since a team from Shippensburg did it in 1990.

"There are a lot of tears, even from myself, to know that the run is over" said Peifer. "But we quickly told them, 'When we leave here, let's get the tears out, because there is nothing to be sad about.'"

How to Turn a Furby Into Krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

by Amy Ratcliffe

krang 1

The squishy pink brain known as Krang is one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ regular foes. He just wants to take over the Earth — no big deal. Given the villain’s nefarious activities, it’s extra amusing that Instructables user Mod Mischief, also known as Allison, modified a Furby to make a portable animatronic version of Krang. For those of you who weren’t around for the Furby craze, the creatures were plush and adorable with moving parts and audio. You can find original Furbys on eBay or in thrift stores.

To make Krang, Mod Mischief disassembled the Furby to remove its moving eyes and ears (the ears became Krang’s tentacles) and then built an armature so that Krang’s brain could be sculpted onto the framework:

Before you can begin sculpting, you need to build up the armature, the framework the sculpture will be built on, and protect the furby components from the plasticine.

I covered the furby bits in cling wrap and then built up the shape of Krang’s brain with part of a 2L pop bottle, scrap paper and masking tape. I did a layer of papier mache over the head to give it a bit of extra strength to hold up under the plasticine clay.

I used a toilet paper roll as a crude stand.

After the brain was sculpted, she cast a finished version from liquid latex.

What Krang looks like in action:

News in Brief: Santorum Nostalgic For Time When Beliefs Were Outlandish Enough To Make Headlines

WASHINGTON—Wistfully recalling the prominence he had in previous campaign cycles, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum told reporters Monday that he is nostalgic for a time when his beliefs were considered outlandish enough to make headlines. “I sure do miss the days when I could steal the spotlight just by saying that I believe birth control is wrong because sex must be procreative, or that Palestinians don’t actually exist,” said Santorum, lamenting that previous comments about not wanting to improve the lives of African Americans by “giving them somebody else’s money” made him sound like just another member of the 2016 GOP pack. “Back in 2003, capturing the media cycle for a few days was as easy as telling the press that I believe same-sex relationships are equivalent to man-on-dog sex. Now, even if that got reported, people would think it was Cruz, Rubio, or Carson half the ...

Giant tubs of Blue Bell ice cream are back on supermarket shelves; Americans rejoice

by Shelly Banjo
firehose

my people, my people

Thank goodness.

Blue Bell ice cream is back.

America’s third-largest ice cream brand, which has cultivated a devoted following of ice cream lovers over the past century, has begun delivering ice cream to select markets after a deadly listeria outbreak caused a summer-long factory shutdown and a recall of 8 million gallons of ice cream.

The deadly bacteria contamination, which was linked to three deaths and several other illnesses, could have meant the end for the 108-year-old ice cream maker, which had previously been cited for listeria problems.

But a Texas oil billionaire came to the rescue with an offer of up to $125 million to keep the brand afloat. The shot in the arm from Sid Bass, a legendary investor known for making big bets on companies like Walt Disney, helped Blue Bell clean up its production facilities and begin churning out ice cream just in time for the end of summer.

I survived the Blue Bell famine of 2015.

— Abel (@acomplee) August 31, 2015

Listeria is a serious problem and the shutdown sent a scare across the dairy industry (paywall). But Blue Bell fans, including the governor of Texas, were mostly just happy the ice cream was back on the shelves.

New Tropes vs Women in Video Games Episode Takes on Women as Reward - We all knew this one was coming.

by Dan Van Winkle

“Content Warning: This educational episode contains game footage of a graphic sexual nature.”

In this episode of Tropes vs Women in Video Games, Anita Sarkeesian points out examples of how women’s bodies are used to reward the actions of gaming’s all-too-frequent target audience: straight men.

Of course, the episode kicks off with Metroid. While it’s great that Samus is a female protagonist and has been for a long time, it’s important to remember that the journey of the Metroid franchise started by sexualizing her more and more depending on player performance, and the trend continued for years.

However, that’s not to demonize Metroid. It’s but a very prominent example of a long list of games that demonstrate how the male gaze and objectification of women that pervade all our media and culture manifest in video games. And beyond that, as Sarkeesian mentions, we like the Metroid games and Samus as a female protagonist—mostly. That just makes it more important that we point out the things that went wrong.

Plenty to Like in Timbers' Loss to Seattle

by Abe Asher
firehose

'the Sounders stole the victory even more egregiously than they stole their tifo design'

After some 30 games of the 2015 season, the Portland Timbers ended up right back where they started on opening night Sunday afternoon at CenturyLink Field: minus Will Johnson and Diego Chara, playing with zero pressure, and admirably turning in a performance more skillful than simply gritty.

Sure, the Timbers lost the battle to the Seattle Sounders. It finished 2-1, one Seattle goal by way of wild goalmouth scramble, and the decisive tally thanks to a penalty kick won on a play that is always called an offensive foul—most famously in basketball, where it's known as charging.

But the Sounders stole the victory even more egregiously than they stole their tifo design. Portland dominated for 90 minutes, all the while waiting for the kind of guns-a-blazing Seattle performance that never came.

Quite simply, the Timbers were expecting a team that never showed up. It's a bad feeling to lose to the Sounders, of course, but this game somehow getting away seems a small price to pay in a season when the Timbers more or less have ruined Seattle's entire season. The 2015 series finishes—if there's no playoff matchup—as a 2-2 Portland KO.

What made this strong Timbers performance possible was the outstanding play of Jack Jewsbury and George Fochive. In contrast with the oil-and-water routine of Brad Evans and Eric Friberg in Seattle's midfield, it was a thing of beauty—worked by one guy has been a USL player since April and another who looked so old in his last outing that it seemed like starting the USL player in his place would have been merciful.

It was a performance that Jewsbury needed. Unshackled from major defensive responsibility thanks to Fochive, the old captain was free to get forward, distribute, and be his best self. The only time Jewsbury showed his age was during the cartwheel celebration he promised his daughters after prodding home the goal that drew him level with legendary marksman Nat Borchers as the Timbers' second-leading scorer.

Meanwhile, you know what you're going to get with Fochive: Determined, slightly rambunctious, uncowed work. His best moment was taking Obafemi Martins to the cleaners only to watch Martins get a star treatment call from referee Alan Kelly.

It wasn't the only star treatment call Martins would get either. Just before halftime, the Nigerian barreled into a stationary Adam Kwarasey at high speed and went down after latching onto a long-ball. Kwarasey was so sure of his conduct that he was about to take a goal kick when he realized that Kelly had pointed to the spot. Evans would convert what ended up as the game-winner.

It was a grown-man performance from Fanendo Adi, who stitched together the Timbers' attack with some superb, domineering holdup play on Chad Marshall and Roman Torres. A player like Lucas Melano makes Adi—who cut down on the whining and sustained his work-rate against Seattle—all the more dangerous and valuable, and the hope is that Portland's front four remains unchanged from now until whenever this season ends.

Diego Valeri was a beneficiary of Adi's work, getting plenty of touches and making the most of them in what was probably his best performance of the season. He had a hand in setting up Melano, who continues to look terrific when he has room to roam off of the other attackers.

The game turned when Osvaldo Alonso, the Sounders' oldest and most dependable warrior, entered as a second half substitute. Alonso settled and gave shape to Seattle's midfield, and he, along with the several other players like Marshall and Frei who are refusing to let the Sounders completely self-destruct, killed off the match.

The Timbers were gassed by minute 80, and bringing Larry, Curly, and Moe off the bench didn't help matters whatsoever. Maxi Urruti looks like he hasn't been outside since Lucas Melano signed, while Darion Asprilla's progress has slowed alarmingly, and Rodney Wallace's game is, at this point, about scary as a glow-stick. Portland's punch off the bench—there is none—has to be among the biggest concerns around this team heading towards the playoffs. Once the subs came in, the game was over.

After the match, a measured Caleb Porter tore into the Irish referee—usually one of MLS' best—musing that Kelly was, "sleepwalking through the game," and that he hoped that Kelly's boss Peter Walton was watching.

Porter, unsurprisingly, hurt his case for sympathy with a swipe at supposed negative media coverage around his team, but these things have a way of evening themselves out over the course of a season. Portland, remember, played poorly and won at home against Chicago and then at Real Salt Lake. The good news is that the Timbers played better last week than they did the week before, and then better this week than last week.

That's a team trending in the right direction as they have every fall since Porter's arrival. This group believes in itself, well beyond the scope of its managers us-against-the-world mentality. With a front four that is as talented as any in MLS outside of LA, it should.

The Sounders still have plenty of work to do. Chemistry is lacking. Getting Alonso back, along with, eventually, Clint Dempsey, will help immeasurably, but new DP signing Nelson Valdez looks about as special as a box of Wheat Thins, and generally, this team looks completely devoid of any true belief that a turn around is imminent. Sunday did nothing to change that.

Searching for 2013 parallels? Watch the progress of these Sounders. Watch Portland, too. In '13, the Timbers last regular season loss came on this day—August 30th. From there, it was seven wins and three draws on that magical run to Western Conference Final.

This Timbers team is unquestionably better than that one. The question here is whether they can find the same spirit that flowed through the 2013 group en masse.

Yes soccer is a results business, but even the most ardent of MLS supporters would tell you it isn't a serious results business until the weather turns cold again. This was a good performance. There's no such thing as a good loss to Seattle. But a promising loss to Seattle? The Timbers just had their first.

Don’t let Roanoke murderer’s arrest justify a license plate reader rise

by Cyrus Farivar

As someone who has been reporting on license plate readers (LPR) for some time now, it actually surprised me when I heard that Roanoke, Virginia, shooter Vester Lee Flanagan had been first located through the use of the scanning device. While the devices have been in use in Virginia for years, their effectiveness and efficiency there—and nationwide—is questionable.

According to local media accounts, when Virginia State Police Trooper Pamela Neff received the suspect’s plate number over her radio last week, she punched it into her LPR system and got an alert that the car had passed by not three minutes earlier. Within 10 minutes, Neff and other officers converged on Flanagan’s location, finding that he had shot himself, ending the manhunt.

There were a number of news stories and tweets that attempted to explain the technology to a public that is presumably unaware of its presence. One television reporter in Cleveland even asked Twitter for more information, saying he’d never heard of the tools.

Don’t let the success of Indian actresses fool you. Bollywood is still a man’s world

by Shelly Walia
Women-Bollywood

In the last few years, there has been a discernible rise in women actors leading Bollywood films—and finding success at the box office.

Take, for instance, Kangana Ranaut’s Tanu Weds Manu Returns. In June this year, it became the first and the only female-led Bollywood film to earn more than Rs100 crore—a feat typically reserved for the three Khans.

This year’s other women-led hits included Anushka Sharma’s NH10, Deepika Padukone’s Piku and Bhumi Pednekar’s Dum Laga Ke Haisha. And in October, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is returning to the big screen with Jazbaa.

The success of these films has led to much media attention, with some even proclaiming that decades of male domination in Bollywood is nearing its end. Film critic Anupama Chopra, for instance, called it “the golden period” for female actors.

But perhaps we are celebrating too soon.

Behind the big screen, there’s still a disproportionately tiny percentage of women working as producers, writers, directors, lyricists, and sound and light technicians.

“We still have spaces where women, perhaps they are not forbidden, but definitely don’t have an equal chance of access in many sectors within media and entertainment,” Lalita Kumarmangalam, chairperson of the National Commission for Women, said last week at a conference in New Delhi.

“There’s actually no physical reason for women not being able to make in that sector, except the almost inherent bias that exists,” she added.

Last year, a study on the representation of women in cinema across 11 countries, conducted by the Geena Davis Media Foundation along with the United Nations, examined the gender of those working behind the camera. It found that the gender ratio in India’s film industry stands at 6.2 males to every one female, much worse than the average of 3.9 males to every 1 female.

Behind-the-camera gender prevalence in India
Directors 9.1%
Writers 12.1%
Producers 15.2%
Gender ratio 6.2 to 1

The study analysed 120 popular films released between 2010 and 2013 across the world’s most lucrative film industries. These included Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea, the US, and the UK.

Writers

Every once in a while, female scriptwriters such as Juhi Chaturvedi (Piku and Vicky Donor) or Urmi Juvekar (Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!) breakthrough with movies that win both critical and commercial acclaim. But these stories are far and few in between.

Advaita Kala, who scripted Kahaani, an award-winning film about a pregnant woman, said that the Indian film industry is simply not a “female-friendly” workplace.

“As a writer, one’s work is mostly solitary, so the risk of gender politics is greatly reduced in terms of practical working conditions,” she told Quartz. “What one really encounters is the male gaze that dominates film making in India. The producer, director, camera man—essentially every major player on a film will in most cases be male—that influences the approach to the material. ”

“As go the numbers of women in other fields, so do they go in the our film industry,” Shibani Bathija, screenwriter for blockbuster films like My Name is Khan and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, told Quartz. “The numbers of women in boardrooms, and other traditional male bastions are skewed as well.”

Women in Bollywood feel that parents actually discourage their daughters from entering the industry.

“If you watch a film made on the life of India’s first filmmaker, Dadasaheb Phalke, you will see how the society and the women themselves viewed prostitution as a better career than acting,” Meghna Puri, president of Whistling Woods, a leading film school in Mumbai, told Quartz. “Some things are so deeply ingrained in culture that they take years to change.”

However, Puri is witnessing some change.

“We currently have a 40:60 girls vs boys ratio. We started with 30:70. Girls are joining courses that are perceived to be unconventional for them like cinematography, sound, editing, direction and producing,” said Puri. Whistling Woods has courses that last between one and three years, and covers all major departments within filmmaking.

Makeup artists

On any Hindi film, the percentage of men employed can go up to as much as 90%.

“If the crew is of 200 people, there are hardly 12 or 15 women—the lead actress, a few junior artists and dancers,” Charu Khurana, a pioneering female makeup artist, told Quartz last year.

Till last year, Bollywood operated a strange 60-year-old system to ensure equal opportunities for men and women: The former were forbidden from hairdressing, and women couldn’t become makeup artists. One alleged reason: Makeup pays more than hairdressing.

“I couldn’t be seen as working as a makeup artist, so I would be doing all the work in the vanity van, or in the hotel room, while a man would represent my work on the sets,” Khurana said. “I would share my credits, and my salary with that man to be my face on the set.”

Finally, in 2012, backed by the National Commission for Women, Khurana formally filed a petition of protest and won the case in her favour in the the Supreme Court of India to lift the informal ban.

“Now, in some six months, there are 150-200 women artists,” Kumarmangalam said on Aug. 24.

Technicians

Among sound and light technicians, there are even fewer women. Hetal Dedhia is Bollywood’s only female gaffer—head of electrical and lighting—and only because her father practiced the same profession. Still, he wasn’t exactly supportive when she decided to enter the profession.

“My father discouraged me and the lightboys working in his company laughed, pointing out that I was too frail for the work,” Dedhia, who has worked on films like Don 2 and Luck By Chance, told the Indian Express newspaper in 2013.

“This is a business that works around the clock, and is physically and emotionally demanding. Then, work can be erratic with timings, travel schedules for outdoor shootings and sometimes inconvenient living and working conditions,” scriptwriter Kala told Quartz. “These are all considered disadvantageous for women by a prevalent mindset.”

Directors

But the number of female directors and producers has risen steadily in Bollywood in the last few years.

Several current and former actresses have taken up the producer’s job. For instance, Dia Mirza’s Bobby Jasoos and Anushka Sharma’s NH10. Then there are wives of Indian superstars, like Gauri Khan and Twinkle Khanna, who have produced films in which their husbands have starred.

Among female directors, former choreographer Farah Khan has become one of the most sought-after names in the industry. In 2004, she became the second woman to be nominated for a Filmfare award for her debut film, Main Hoon Na. Last year, her blockbuster film, Happy New Year, became the first film directed by a woman to earn more than Rs100 crore at the box office.

Alongside Khan and Zoya Akhtar—who deals with multi-starrer archetypal Bollywood movies—a generation of women directors have begun to explore more feminist themes in their films, finding both commercial and critical success. Recent examples include Gauri Shinde’s English Vinglish and Shonali Bose’s Margarita With a Straw.

Nonetheless, a majority of these women tend to be related, in some way or the other, with established Bollywood families. There still remains little scope for an outsider—those who do not have a superstar father or husband— to be able to raise funds for their projects.

“Unless and until half of the directors are women, one won’t really be able to say there is absolute gender equality in the movie business,” Tanuja Chandra, who has received both commercial and critical acclaim as a director, said in a 2012 interview.

“At that time perhaps the pay structure will change too and women will earn as much money as men—whether an actress or a woman-director.”

Add Bluetooth capability to your computer super fast with a USB BT 4.0 adapter. This adapter is backwards compatible with v2.1 and earlier, but also supports the latest v4.0/Bluetooth Low Energy. Inside lies a CSR8510 Bluetooth USB host.

We’ve used this with great success on a Windows 7 computer, installing as a ‘generic’ Bluetooth device, but we expect it to work just fine with any modern computer as this chipset is very common. So far we’ve tested it to communicate with Bluetooth data modules only.

NewImage

Drivers for CSR Bluetooth modules are built into Windows XP/7/8/10 so you do not need to install any software or download anything: other bluetooth drivers or ‘stacks’ such as BlueSoleil are not as good as the Windows stack and will cause problems. Just plug it in and let windows auto-install the BT driver, it may take a few minutes! For Linux, use Bluez which works great, our Pi tutorial will be similar to your favorite distro

Three months after Google introduced Google+ Collections, the feature is now available on iOS, Google announced in a blog post today. With this update, iOS users who still use Google+ can now curate their feeds, filling them with images and conversations specific to their interests.

While the update might be helpful to users who have stuck around, Google+ seems to largely be a sunken ship. Google no longer requires users to create Google+ accounts, and earlier this year, split off Photos and Hangouts to see if the two could make it as standalone products. The Prison Guard Who Couldn’t Escape Prison

firehose

longread
TW: suicide, police abuse

'Scott had loved working at High Desert at first but hated it by the end. Over his nine years as a prison guard, he had seen terrible things. He had seen his fellow guards abuse inmates and when he reported their misconduct up the chain of command, they turned on him. He broke what one former prison guard called “the green wall of silence” — the code of silence that has turned California’s state prisons into insular and isolated facilities of unconstitutional conditions, where what happens on the Inside stays on the Inside. It is an unwritten rule meant to protect the men and women tasked with overseeing the state’s 130,000 inmates, and Scott had to pay for violating it.

Over the last decade, at least three High Desert COs who were bullied by colleagues have killed themselves, according to two guards and a 2012 lawsuit against the state’s corrections department. The lawsuit claimed that a guard who killed himself in 2008 and a guard who killed himself in 2012 had each faced “harassment” and “retaliation” for complaints they filed. Supervisors, the suit stated, “tolerated and ratified such a harassing environment.”

Bill Sessa, a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations said: “We cannot know the motivations of any officer who commits suicide. There are many factors that lead someone to such a tragic decision and we are not in a position to speculate on that.”

Two High Desert COs said they watched their colleagues harass Scott, and they watched how it changed him.

“I saw those guys turn on Scott,” said a High Desert CO. “They wanted to take him out. They pecked on him like a bunch of chickens to try to break him and they did. It just makes me so mad because these guys, they won. They got him to do exactly what they wanted him to do, which was to shut up.”'

When Scott Jones left the house on July 8, 2011, he told his wife Janelle and his 10-year-old son Tyler that he was driving to High Desert State Prison to ask for his job back. He never made it to the prison.

This Brazilian mayor was using WhatsApp to run her town remotely

by Svati Kirsten Narula
Useful tools for day-to-day politics.

Many of us conduct our work and personal lives largely via instant messaging these days, but the young mayor of Bom Jardim, a small town in northeastern Brazil, took it to the next level. Authorities there say Lidiane Leite ran the town for three years via the mobile app WhatsApp—while living a luxurious life in a different town and delegating decisions to subordinates.

Governing via WhatsApp is not a crime, but now Leite is under investigation for allegedly stealing public funds for Bom Jardim’s education system to fund a life of leisure, and is reportedly on the run from police. Her lawyer says that she was not aware of any wrongdoing.

When Leite was elected mayor in 2012, she had little experience in public service, the BBC reports, citing prosecutors and local media. Authorities say she was just acting as a proxy for her boyfriend, Beto Rocha, approximately 15 years her senior, who had been forced out of the election because of suspected corruption.

After being elected, Leite appointed Rocha as her main adviser and left him to take care of business, the BBC reports. She moved to Sao Luis, 150 miles away from Bom Jardim, and authorities say she took the funds that had been allocated for Bom Jardim’s education system with her.

Only recently, it seems, did Brazilian government officials notice that those funds (approximately $4 million) were missing, and that Leite, now 25, has spent the past three years governing Bom Jardim remotely—by checking in with Rocha and other cabinet members via WhatsApp.

“She was too young and and inexperienced when she took office,” her lawyer, Carlos Barros, told UPI. “She lacked confidence and delegated many tasks to Mr. Rocha.”

Leite was never shy about her life outside Bom Jardim, one of Brazil’s poorest towns, Brazil’s Folha de Sao Paulo reports (Portuguese). Her Instagram account, which is now private, reportedly showed Leite posing for selfies with friends on jet skis, her personal trainer, and holding glasses of champagne.

One of the comments she posted in a note to her followers translates to: “Before I was mayor, I was poor, had a Land Rover. Now I’m in a SW4. I should have bought a more luxurious car because thank god the money is left.”

Another set of comments translates to: “I buy what I want, spend what I please. They’re not even there for what they think. A kiss on the shoulder for the repressed.”

Now, Leite is on the run, the town’s poor education system has collapsed, and its teachers are not being paid, the BBC reports. A local judge is threatening to issue an international arrest warrant if Leite does not turn herself in by Thursday.

Great Job, Internet!: Aqua Teen’s Master Shake sounds suspiciously like radio’s Mark Levin

by Joe Blevins
firehose

When Swamp Land began posting these videos several weeks ago, his aims were modest. “Just trying to raise awareness that right wing dick Mark Levin sounds exactly like Master Shake,” he wrote at the time. But since then, the YouTuber’s rhetoric has become more accusatory: “Why won’t Mark Levin publicly deny being a talking cartoon cup? His ongoing silence amidst increasing evidence raises serious questions.”

It’s only been about a week or so since Adult Swim aired what was supposedly the final episode of its long-running fast food farce, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and already the program’s fans may be experiencing withdrawal symptoms. It is perhaps cold comfort that the alleged denouement was at least the third Aqua Teen installment to be billed as “The Last One.” For those keeping track, there was “The Last One,” which was followed by “The Last One Forever And Ever,” and finally “The Last One Forever And Ever (For Real This Time) (We Fucking Mean It).” Meanwhile, Aqua fans can find solace in a series of clever mashup videos by a YouTube user named Swamp Land, who has taken some classic footage of Master Shake, the show’s pathologically selfish and self-aggrandizing milkshake character, and synced it up perfectly to audio of ultraconservative radio ranter Mark Levin ...

Riley?

firehose

sportsball!

After 2 seasons of underperforming play will Portland let Riley go? I sure hope so. He seems to be more interested in big names than building a team, plays favorites even when they struggle and the bottom line is that with all of the talent at his disposal he lost the only playoff game he made it to and missed the playoffs this season. #BAON #RCTID

Amazon Prime Is About to Get Worse

by Kate Knibbs on Gizmodo, shared by Annalee Newitz to io9
firehose

'Amazon is testing a plan called “Ship by Region,” which lets some sellers (some that choose to ship from their own factories instead of Amazon’s) pick where they want to provide two-day shipping to Prime customers, as the Wall Street Journal reported last week:

The merchants may limit how far they will ship some items – large-screen televisions, for example – with the two-day guarantee under Prime. If a Prime customer is outside that region, shipping may take longer.
So basically, if a merchant in Florida doesn’t want to two-day ship west of the Mississippi, or a merchant in New York doesn’t want to ship to the west coast, they don’t have to. And that means that some of the merchandise that’ll pop up as Prime eligible won’t offer two-day shipping.'

We’ve generally considered Amazon Prime to be the best deal in technology . But, alas: It’s about to get slightly more annoying to use, and I am irrationally upset about it.

The Barber: Portland man's big dreams hit gentrification's hard reality

firehose

mwip longread

When he finally raised the money to take the exam in March, he scored a 73 -- two points shy of passing. As he climbed the cracked stone steps to his home that afternoon, he promised himself that next time he would remember tinea -- a fungus, not a parasite.

His girlfriend, Teyah Reynolds, greeted him with even worse news:
"We're being evicted."

Barbershop dreamsMoving out of St. Johns, another neighborhood in the midst of rapid and radical demographic change. Kristyna Wentz-Graff

Poor blacks aren't the only people who can't afford the inner-city anymore. The middle-class white people who took their place are increasingly priced out. They, too, are moving to St. Johns, transforming it into the next hip neighborhood.

Their landlord planned to put the house on the market for $230,000, more than twice what he'd bought it for a few years earlier. It sold, quickly, for $238,000.

Stokes and Reynolds searched for weeks, but they couldn't afford anything in North Portland anymore. Even one-bedroom apartments cost $1,200 a month.

"They're building a New Seasons nearby," Reynolds told Stokes. "That's a wrap on the 'hood."

East Portland was their last resort, as it has become for more and more working-class Portlanders.

The 450-square-foot house at SE 103rd Avenue and Foster Road sat on a crooked foundation. The shower was so small Stokes, a size XXXL, had to keep one leg out as he washed. The barber chair Reynolds had bought him didn't fit anywhere.

Still, he dreamed. Stokes took the state barber exam just after they moved in May. This time, he didn't wait to get home to announce his score. He called from a hallway outside the licensing office:

"I passed," he said, crying so hard the words barely came out. "I made it."

Still, he needed a job.

Zhao's purpose is to help others, particularly those who lack the opportunities she's had. Her passion is Kids First Project, a nonprofit she's launched to provide programs and services to homeless children and teens and to raise awareness of their needs, with the ultimate goal of breaking the cycle of poverty.

Zhao and fellow student volunteers have begun by visiting Portland Homeless Family Solutions once a week to work with kids and teens there. They've organized crafts and games, taught life skills classes and tutored.

"I do believe that it is a right for all children to be equipped with the resources that they will need to achieve their full potential," Zhao says in a YouTube video introducing Kids First Project.

News in Brief: Pope Cleans Up Dead Angel Who Flew Into Sistine Chapel Window

VATICAN CITY—Hurrying outside after hearing a disturbingly loud thud against the side of the church, Pope Francis was reportedly left to clean up the remains of a dead angel Monday that flew straight into one of the Sistine Chapel’s windows. “It’s really sad; it seems like one of these guys crashes into a window at least once a week,” said the pontiff, who appeared visibly distressed while sweeping up the feathers scattered around the angel’s lifeless body. “Most of the time, their necks break and they die instantly, but once in a while they’re still twitching a bit. That’s when I find it’s best to put them out of their misery with a shovel.” At press time, the Bishop of Rome was attempting to scrape off an angel splattered on the windshield of the Popemobile.

3D Print The NASA Mars Curiosity Rover

by Rebecca Houlihan

NewImage

via instructables

When NASA recently released the STLs for the Mars Curiosity Rover I couldn’t wait to print it out. Of course, I always have trepidations because my print bed is only 100mmx100mm, and so often I find that something is too large to print. However, if one want’s something bad enough, you look for workarounds. My workaround is Blender, with blender and the skill set I’ve been working on ever since I got my Printrbot the .stl can be modified to fit my bed size… some of the times. Sometimes it takes some ingenuity. Fortunately, this time wasn’t one of them.

Taking the original body, I divided it in half along external detailing, and made some pins to hold the two pieces together. Not too hard, but always easier said than done. The original image also included flat disks to make the print stick better; only in our case, the bottom is flat, and it’s not really needed. So, taking care to keep the .stl file a manifold structure, also easier said than done, I removed the feet.

If you have a large printer and don’t need to break yours down into smaller pieces you’ll need to be able to print 161mm x 59mm x 108mm. If you have a small print bed, happy days, except for the body, every other part that needs to be printed will fit on the small Printrbot bed.

So, everyone will need the .stl files located at this NASA site: http://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/.
