2013 World Series: Shane Victorino may have played Game 4 under AL rules
firehosebaseball is dumb
fix your stupid leagues

Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino may have played Game 4 of the World Series if it was in Fenway Park instead of Busch Stadium, reports Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal.
Victorino was a late scratch from Sunday's lineup with back tightness. The outfielder has plagued by numerous injuries for months, but has continued to play through them. Victorino, however, felt his back lock up in the fifth inning of Game 3, and the injury continued to bother him the next day.
If the Red Sox were playing under AL rules, Victorino may have still been in the lineup. The outfielder, however, did not want to leave his manager shorthanded, telling MacPherson:
"I thought I could go, but if in the third or fourth inning I'm locked up, then we lose me, we lose a bench guy, so we lose two guys. Me being a National League player, I understood that. Let's let Jonny go. Let me do my exercises seeing if I could get better, and if there's a pinch, maybe I can help."
Jonny Gomes replaced Victorino in the lineup and delivered the biggest hit of the game, smashing a three-run homer in the Red Sox 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Red Sox have not announced whether Victorino will be in the Game 5 lineup.

Hey, you, be a detective with Pikachu ⊟
Remember those GIFs of a new mystery Pokémon 3DS game and evil Pikachu? We now know that project is a detective game in which the electric rodent is your partner. More details from NHK’s Japanese tv program The Professionals, posted by Serebii:
"A rare Pikachu is said to be the enemy within this game, but they can’t see people liking it. The game is to feature a special Blue Pikachu, which talks. The Pikachu is being controlled via motion capture and facial recognition.
All this information is from early development, so it is probable that it will change should the game come out.”
The game is said to have a development cycle of two years, and is expected to release in… 2015.

Target's state-of-the-art forensics lab catches more than just shoplifters | Minnesota Public Radio News
firehoseeverything is always watching beat
Brooklyn Park, Minn. — It's not uncommon for large retail stores to use high-tech video surveillance and forensics to catch shoplifters, but Minnesota-based Target Corp. takes the concept one step further, lending its high-end technology and professionals to law enforcement agencies free of charge, often on high-profile cases.
Target forensic analyst Jake Steinhour even testified during the recent trial of Mahdi Hassan Ali, who was convicted of killing three men last year at the Seward Market in Minneapolis.

PyroPet Candles Melt into Creepy Metallic Skeletons

First mentioned in this space back in 2011 as the “Devil’s Candle,” this delightfully creepy candle that melts from a cute geometric cat into a ghoulish steel skeleton was designed by Thorunn Arnadottir and Dan Koval. After going viral around the web it left many wondering where they could get their hands on one, but unfortunately it was not to be, until now. The duo have finally figured out how to mass produce a whole family of morbid little candle pets called PyroPets, the first of which, a cat named Kisa (“kitty” in Icelandic), is available for the first time over on Kickstarter. The candle is actually quite large, measuring almost 7″ tall and has a burning time of around 20 hours.

Star Citizen Has All Your Money, Alpha Test Expands
firehosejesus
By Graham Smith on October 28th, 2013 at 10:00 am.

How much of your money would you give to a crowdfunding project that aims to go to actual space, because it seems a lot of you like it out there an awful lot. Star Citizen, the crowdfunded game from Wing Commander Chris Roberts, just hit $25 million in gathered funds. For those keeping track, that means it’s made $1 million extra in just the past week.
Roberts’ isn’t done yet, and took the opportunity to reveal the next stretch goal for the game.
Writing in his Letter from the Chairman, Roberts’ says that the new funds will allow them to expand their alpha test plans by adding 50,000 new slots for players to fill. That should ultimately lead to a better tested, more stable game, and more opportunities for the likes of us to get our hands on the cockpit controls earlier.
If you’ve still pennies down the back of your couch, here’s what happens when they reach $27 million:
Banu Merchantman Unlocked – Banu traders are renowed for their merchant prowess, traveling the spacelanes and trading with everyone from humans to the Vanduul! Their sturdy, dedicated trading ships are prized beyond all other transports, sometimes passing from generation to generation of Banu. At $23 million we dedicated additional resources to making Xi’An spacecraft a unique experience. At $27 million, we will expand that same thinking to the Banu! Starting with the merchant ship, the design team will expand Banu technology to offer players a completely different way of experiencing their universe.
I don’t really know what that means, “a completely different way of experiencing their universe,” but I like the word spacelanes.
Obviously Star Citizen comes from a developer with some pedigree, a compelling concept, and a link to a fondly remembered game, but it’s also got all the hallmarks of a compelling crowdfunding project. Roberts’ and his team have done a great job in making the game’s development feel rapid and inevitable, through constant dev updates, new videos, and a clear roadmap for the future. All of this stuff builds confidence that things are happening behind the scenes, and gives the sense that your money is going towards something visible. Other projects need to start learning these lessons, and there’d be a lot less bad feeling about some recent Steam Early Access games if they’d begin the tradition of doing the same.
Check out the last trailer or, if you can’t wait for this game to be done, check out Craig’s hands-on impressions of the similarly space-bound X: Rebirth, which is out November 15th.

Red Sox vs. Cardinals, World Series Game 4 GIF recap

The Boston Red Sox evened the World Series at two games apiece with a 4-2 Game 4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jonny Gomes delivered the clutch hit for the Red Sox, blasting a three-run homer off Cardinals reliever Seth Maness. Maness left a sinking fastball up in the strike zone, and Gomes punished his mistake:
Gomes was a late replacement for Shane Victorino, who John Farrell scratched from the batting order with back tightness. Boston was clearly happy to have the bearded outfielder in the lineup, and celebrated the three-run bomb in familiar style:
Boston scored their first run of the game on a Stephen Drew sacrifice fly, plating David Ortiz. The slugger hustled in from third base, barely beating out a throw from Matt Holliday:
The Cardinals scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Matt Carpenter hit a one-out single up the middle, and Jacoby Ellsbury booted the ball, allowing Carpenter to slide into second base:
Carlos Beltran drove in Carpenter with a single up the middle, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.
The Red Sox committed another error later in the game. Xander Bogaerts made an impressive diving stop on a Yadier Molina groundball, but made a poor throw and missed Mike Napoli at first base:
Napoli, who came in the game as a defensive replacement for Ortiz, could have helped the rookie by coming off the bag earlier. The Cardinals could not take advantage of the mistake, stranding Molina at third base.
Unfortunately for Cardinals fans, the worst mistake of the night belonged to rookie second baseman Kolten Wong. The second baseman was picked off first base by Red Sox closer Koji Uehara to end the game, a critical baserunning error at the worst possible time:
Carlos Beltran was left standing in the batter's box after Uehara erased Wong from the basepaths. The prolific postseason hitter could not hide his disappointment following the play:
It was that kind of night for the Cardinals and their fans. FOX cameras even caught Carpenter in a private moment during an interview with Mike Matheny; the second baseman can be clearly seen buckling up his pants:
Given how the game ended for St. Louis, we should probably be thankful that Carpenter wasn't caught with his pants all the way down.

Reboot and Rebuild After Mavericks
firehoseit just works
My upgrade to Mavericks went surprisingly smooth; suspiciously smooth. None of my Python scripts broke, all of my Hazel rules continued to function and my most critical Keyboard Maestro macros continued to function. However, I immediately noticed that I could no longer adjust the volume with the keyboard function keys. After turning off everything that might be intercepting the key presses, I was beaten. I went about my work as usual.
I began to notice pauses and temporary hangs when working in the Finder and switching apps. Occasionally the dock would not respond to mouse-overs.
So, I did what I usually do. I rebooted into Recovery mode and repaired my disk and permissions. Disk first, then permissions. Things were not fine even though I performed the exact same process immediately before upgrading to Mavericks. Many blocks were misallocated and 1000's of files had the wrong permissions after the upgrade.
After repairing, everything is OK again. The function keys work again and there are no unusual pauses when working in the Finder.
Final week of MLS regular season provides fitting end to a wild year
firehoselol Seattle, thanks for sucking

Hopefully you've finally had a chance to catch your breath after what has to be the craziest finish to the most competitive season in MLS history. For what I believe is the first time in the league's 18 seasons, every game during the final month had some effect on the playoffs. Also a league first: the Supporters' Shield winner wasn't decided until the final day of the season, with the New York Red Bulls needing to pull out a win over the Chicago Fire in order to win the franchise's first major trophy.
As it were, the Red Bulls result also sealed the playoff field, as the Fire were the final team to be eliminated.
Here are some of the highlights of the final week (in chronological order)
Real Salt Lake applies the pressure
A lot of things needed to happen in order for the tension to be ratcheted up, and the games followed the script almost perfectly. The first was that RSL needed to beat Chivas USA, which was actually the only game in the final week that pitted a playoff qualified team against an opponent that had already been eliminated. Chivas USA at least managed to make a game of it, taking it in halftime tied and causing RSL some heartburn with several close misses before class prevailed.
In any case, the result temporarily put RSL in the top spot in the West.
Union can't close
It has been an uneven season for the Philadelphia Union, never winning more than two straight or losing more than two in a row. For the most part, they've bobbed up and down around the playoff line. So maybe it's fitting that their season ended in such fashion.
After looking listless for much of the first 85 minutes, they came to life and finally equalized in the 88th on a Jack McInerney goal. A tie was never going to be enough to get them in, but they at least had life.
But Sporting Kansas City extinguished whatever hope there was when Lawrence Olum scored his first career goal in the 92nd minute. The win also temporarily lifted KC into the Supporters' Shield lead, with only a Red Bulls win standing in their way.
Impact complete collapse
As much attention as the Sounders late struggles have garnered, it's a little easy to overlook what has happened to the Impact. Here's a team that was leading the Supporters' Shield race on Sept. 8, but was suddenly in danger of missing the playoffs after going 1-5-1 heading into their season finale.
Facing lowly Toronto FC -- a team that had claimed six points in their last 11 games -- the Impact could still book their ticket with a win. As we know by now, that didn't happen.
TFC got a goal from Robert Earnshaw in the 16th minute and held on. The Impact now join TFC as the only two MLS team to have never participated in the playoffs.
Timbers put exclamation point on amazing turnaround
It's almost crazy to think that a year ago, the Timbers were one of the worst teams in MLS. They had just finished a season in which only two teams had fewer points than their 34 and a worse goal-difference than their -22.
Fast forward to Saturday.
By thumping Chivas USA 5-0 on the road -- which, it should be said, was the franchise's first-ever win in Southern California -- they completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in MLS history. Their 57 points were 23 better than a year ago and, even more remarkably, they ended the season with a league-best +21 goal difference that represented an almost-hard-to-believe 43-goal turnaround.
More relevantly, the win guaranteed them the top seed in the Western Conference and potentially the first all-Cascadia playoff series.
Revs are back
It's been awhile, but the New England Revolution are finally in the postseason again. They didn't make it particularly easy on themselves, though.
The Revs got a 28th minute goal from Juan Agudelo -- who has seven goals in about 1,000 minutes since being traded to New England -- and then held on for dear life. Not that they are complaining, of course.
Once one of the proudest franchises in MLS, the Revolution had not made the playoffs since 2009. But in just his second year at the helm, Jay Heaps has shown that he can turn a group of talented players into an effective team. Keep an eye on these guys.
Red Bulls off the schneid
There's a joke that has made its way around MLS supporters group circles that goes something like this: "Why does Red Bull come in cans? Because they have no cups." It was funny because it was true. The Red Bulls were the oldest MLS team that had never won the MLS Cup, Supporters' Shield or U.S. Open Cup. Opposing fans will now have to come up with a new diss.
The Red Bulls finally got the monkey off their backs, doing so in pretty impressive fashion. Needing a win of their own to accomplish the feat and facing a Fire team that needed at least a tie to make the playoffs, the Red Bulls fell behind early but stormed ahead with a dominant second half.
After Mike Magee scored his 21st goal of the season in the 6th minute, the Red Bulls answered with Thierry Henry's 11th. The Fire had most of the play for the rest of the first half, and seemed quite capable of at least holding on for a tie. But Ibrahim Sekagya won a goal-mouth scramble near the start of the second half to grab a lead and then Lloyd Same effectively put the match away with a beautiful left-footed strike in the 56th minute. Two more Red Bulls goals followed allowing the Red Bull faithful to stretch their celebration out even further.
Say what you will about the real value of the Shield in a league with an unbalanced schedule, but Red Bulls fans deserved this as much as anyone. They've stuck with a team that has, at times, looked completely listless, and the organization did them a solid by having a postgame ceremony to mark the occasion.
Sounders limp to finish line
It wasn't the prettiest game, but the MLS regular-season finale was at least worth watching, which is really the way this campaign needed to end. The Sounders grabbed an early lead on Clint Dempsey's first goal since signing with the Sounders, but the Galaxy equalized on Robbie Keane's turf-aided 78th minute strike.
The tie allowed the Galaxy to get a few days of rest before taking on RSL in the Western Conference semifinals, while the Sounders must regroup for a home game against the Rapids on Wednesday in the "first-round" knockout game.
