2018 Ford Mustang Gets the RTR Treatment

by Collin Woodard

If you can trust anyone to know a thing or two about awesome tuned Mustangs, it’s Vaughn Gittin Jr. Just look at how he handles his RTR Mustang in this drift battle against Daigo Saito’s Liberty Walk Lamborghini. Or this video of him drifting a Mustang on ice. But Gittin Jr. doesn’t only stick to drifting Mustangs. He also has a company that tunes them. And today, that company, RTR, unveiled its version of the 2018 Ford Mustang.

Aside from the RTR badges on the side, the most obvious sign you’re looking at an RTR Mustang is that set of illuminated “nostrils” on the front end. Whether you like the look or not, they were there on the last RTR Mustang, and they’re still there on the new one. Every RTR Mustang also comes with the graphics package you see here, as well as a signed plaque on the dash, and a tweaked aero package that includes that redesigned front bumper.

You can order your RTR Mustang with three stages of tune: Spec 1, Spec 2, and Spec 3. Details on what those include have not been released, but we do know that at least one of them offers more than 700 hp. That’s only Dodge Hellcat power, not nearly Dodge Demon power, but it should be enough to do the occasional burnout or kick the tail out on the track.

And if you like the idea of this Mustang but need something a little more practical, look for RTR to reveal what it calls an RTR Muscle Truck based on the Ford F-150 sometime soon. At the moment, all we know is that it’s inspired by the Ultimate Funhaver. So that should be pretty cool.

Both the RTR Mustang and the RTR Muscle Truck will be on display at SEMA this year. Expect more details such as pricing and exact horsepower figures to be announced at the show, as well.

Destiny 2 Was September 2017's Best-Selling Game

by Seth G. Macy

According to analysts at The NPD Group, September's best selling game was Destiny 2, followed by NBA2K18.

In only one month of sales, Destiny 2 is now the "best-selling game of 2017 year to date." NBA 2K18 is the best-selling sports game.

Interestingly, the top selling hardware unit for September wasn't the Nintendo Switch, but rather the Super NES Classic.

Switch was the top selling console for September 2017, beating out PS4 and Xbox One, but Sony led the pack in overall consumer spending tied to the PS4 platform.

Nintendo issued a statement last week ahead of the public release of NPD's sales data championing its hybrid console. Two-thirds of all hardware sales in September belonged to Nintendo.

5 Car Repair Tools Every Driver Should Own

by Certified Master Techs
Chris M

not sure if I have a lug wrench or not. I do have a jack. I'm sure the factory lug wrench is in there. I believe my emergency kit expired.

With the advent of connected-car services and apps, like OnStar and Zubie, it’s understandable that drivers have become complacent about breakdowns. After all, it’s easy to call up roadside assistance using your smartphone or even your car itself.

However, it’s still important for anyone who drives a car to know how to perform basic tasks — and to carry a few essential car repair tools for that purpose.

Let’s take a look at five of the most important items that should be in everyone’s car trunk.

1. Tire-Pressure Gauge

When your tires are feeling a little squishy — or when the exclamation-mark symbol lights up when you start the engine — you’ll need to check your tire pressure. In fact, some experts recommend doing this regularly, as a matter of course.

Not only can tire blowouts be dangerous, but underinflated tires can be a serious drag on your fuel economy. So make it a habit to use the first tool on our list: a tire-pressure gauge.

High-quality digital gauges are the most reliable. These will set you back $30 or so, but the peace of mind they provide is well-worth the investment.

2. Lug Wrench and Jack

In the event that you do get a flat tire, you’ll need these next two car repair tools (although we’re counting them as one item, since they go hand-in-hand): a jack and a lug wrench.

A recent survey discovered that only 42% of Americans feel confident when it comes to changing their own tire, but the job isn’t that hard. Check your car manual for information. It’s even OK to”cheat” by Googling it if you need to.

3. Jumper Cables

If you’ve ever left your car lights on while the car wasn’t running, you know that sinking feeling of trying to start your ignition to no avail. You might need a new battery, or you might just need to charge yours up again, but either scenario calls for jumper cables.

As with all of these tools, don’t cheap out. Investing in a high-quality set of cables with spring-loaded clamps is a good choice. Just ask the experts at House of Cars.

4. Duct Tape

Think duct tape isn’t a tool? MacGyver would beg to disagree. This workhorse of the repair world is as handy when it comes to quick automotive fixes as it is around the house.

Keep a roll of the magic silver stuff in your trunk or glove box. Use it to attach a loose headlight cover, side mirror, windshield wiper, even a bumper. Of course, it’s a temporary solution, but that’s better than nothing.

5. Emergency Kit

Again, some might quibble at calling these items car repair tools, but they just might save your life.

You can put together your own emergency car kit or buy one that’s premade. Either way, make sure you carry the essentials, such as:

  • non-perishable food items
  • bottles of water
  • first-aid supplies
  • flares
  • a flashlight and extra batteries
  • a blanket and/or warm clothing
  • rags or paper towels
  • a fire extinguisher

A Victory Against ISIS in the Philippines Leaves a City Destroyed (28 photos)

Chris M

This is insane to me. Look at how many impact marks there are. There isn't one piece of building that doesn't have some sort of bullet hole or shrapnel mark on it. It's crazy how anyone survived.

Five months ago, a group of pro-ISIS militants attacked and took control of parts of the southern Philippine city of Marawi. More than 1,000 people have been killed in the siege that has raged since then, as Philippine government troops waged war against the pro-ISIS occupiers—local terrorist groups called the Maute Group and Abu Sayyaf. Airstrikes and thousands of government troops involved in street battles took an enormous toll on the city as well, damaging or destroying hundreds of houses, mosques, and other buildings. After the deaths of two of the militant leaders, President Rodrigo Duterte declared the fighting over last week, and said that Marawi City had been liberated. Today, some of the 400,000 displaced residents are being allowed to return to parts of their war-ravaged city.

Autohaus

by Ryan

“The Autohaus is a car collectors’ garage and residence in central Texas. The design features compact living quarters, expressed as a single mass, floating above an open area for flexible gathering and automobile calibration/display. The second floor volume is shifted forward to allow for double-height views to the garage space at the back, while creating an everyday carport beneath the hovering bed chamber in the front. The twenty-foot cantilever is made possible by W30x116 steel beams, and a light-filled stairwell provides physical access between the two volumes. Custom-made steel and glass sliding doors open up the living space to a large roof terrace surrounded by tree canopies, enabling indoor/outdoor living in an urban setting.”

Knipex 10-Inch High Leverage Diagonal Cutters

by mark
Chris M

I've heard great things about KNIPEX tools. made in Germany. Expensive, but good quality.

Knipex High Leverage Cutters cost around $35, which isn’t cheap for a pair of clippers, but they’re indestructible. They’re drop forged, so they’re extremely tough. They’re rated for cutting through Piano Wire, which is essentially tempered spring steel and easily damages most cutters.

Personally, I’ve used these on cutting away sharp ends of nails and screws. But I’ll also use them on overkill things like zip ties or extracting my kid’s toy from packaging tie downs. It’s safer and more satisfying than a box cutter.

Destiny 2 Updates Coming With Seasons

by Seth G. Macy

Bungie explained how seasons will affect the way the game is updated going forward, and what that means for players.

During a TwitchCon panel, Bungie promised players can expect at least one big event per season, with four season planned per year.

While there is no big event for the first season of Destiny 2, Bungie did tease some future events, like the return of The Dawning.

Players will see a winter theme, matching the upcoming weather season in the northern hemisphere. The Tower will be decked out in a winter theme and players will be able to do things like throw snowballs and play hockey. The snowballs will extend beyond just the tower, so you'll be able to pelt enemies with snowballs, as well.

Vise-Grips

Chris M

needed for any house.

If one needs a single tool, Vise-grips are it. On a motorcycle I have used one as clutch or shift lever or attached to a broken throttle cable. You can turn a screw if you can reach the side of it with this tool . Lock one down to something under the hood; you might not like to bugger up a bolt, but you won’t care if you are no where near tools. If required, you can rip sheet metal with one. Wire cutting too. You can clamp it down hard enough to hit it with a hammer. Vise-grips and a crowbar are thieves’ favorite tools. Buy the small size; and only the brand name: these are made of high-strength steel.

— C. Bridger

And they come in a whole tribe of specialty varieties. The standard should be in everyone’s tool box, the small one in every emergency pouch, and you should at least know about the others. The same relentless leveraged but sensitive clamping action works with super wide vise-grips, narrow ones, wide necked ones, nut cutters, curved necks and so on. They are extremely handy.

Ford Bringing Seven 2018 Mustang Show Cars to SEMA

by etahaney

Ford always brings out a fleet of wild show cars to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas. For this year’s show, Ford Performance is displaying seven tricked-out 2018 Mustangs. Here’s a sneak peek at what FoMoCo is cooking up for pony car fans.

2018 Ford Mustang GT Convertible by Speedkore Performance Group

Speedkore Performance Group’s Mustang GT Convertible sports carbon-fiber aero touches, an upgraded suspension, and powertrain enhancements to its 5.0-liter V-8 engine. It also features handmade trim, brushed aluminum accents, and an all-leather Bomber Brown interior.

The carbon-fiber roll bar with aluminum trim is a nice retro addition and Ford Performance says “the tonneau cover is a modern throwback to classic speedsters and race cars from the 1930s.” Silly us—we thought it was a throwback to the 1980s.

2018 Ford Mustang Convertible by MAD Industries

Here’s another rad Mustang from the mad, mad minds at MAD Industries for drop-top fans. The white with green and black graphics convertible packs a re-tuned 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

It gets a Ford Performance cold-air intake system and a Borla exhaust to enhance its pony power. The open-air ride rolls on staggered 20-inch Niche Staccato Wheels and sports an APR Carbon-Fiber Drag Wing to keep it planted on the road. The interior gets jet-black Braum Elite-X Series Racing bucket seats with white stitching.

2018 729 Wide-Body Mustang “TriAthlete” by Roush Performance

Too bad about the sea foam green paint and gold rims—otherwise the custom widebody kit on this “TriAthlete” by Roush Performance looks really cool. Roush says it drew inspiration from the 1970 Boss 429 for this custom 729-hp Roush-supercharged Mustang.

It’s actually finished in a “commemorative hue of Ford’s Grabber Green.” It started out as a Mustang Fastback with a 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V-8 engine that’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It received lots of race-inspired carbon-fiber parts and rolls on custom Vossen RVS forged wheels. Inside the 729 features Recaro racing seats and a Katzkin Watson Racing roll cage.

2018 Ford Mustang Fastback by Tucci Hot Rods

The redesigned Fastback by Tucci Hot Rods looks totally badass and has a top speed of 200 mph—not too shabby. Under the beefy gray hood lies a Hellion twin-turbo 5.0-liter V-8 engine that’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

It also features a Mishimoto radiator, transmission cooler, oil cooler, and a Borla exhaust system. Around back the Mustang gets an aluminum pro mod wing, and rear diffuser.

2018 Ford Mustang Fastback by Air Design

Like stripes? This Sherman Williams custom silver-painted Fastback by Air Design has two black ones on its full body kit. The aftermarket kit includes a front bumper replacement, side skirts, a rear lower skirt, fender vents, and a stylish rear wing.

A 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine powers the modest Mustang. The four-banger is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Inside, the Mustang gets Recaro leather seats, Audio by Kicker, and a Sundial window tint.

2018 Ford Mustang Fastback by DRAGG

Mustang cop cars look really cool, but they aren’t exactly ideal for police duty. Imagine having to drag criminals in and out of that back seat for starters. Still, Drag Racing Against Gangs and Graffiti (DRAGG), a non-profit youth-oriented automotive after-school program, built this awesome ride to scare those punks straight.

According to DRAGG, the eco-friendly, Guardian-themed police vehicle “symbolizes the commitment of the police to the communities they serve.” It packs a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It also features Ford Performance lowering springs, a Metalhaus Inc. police push bar, Borla exhaust, and Petty’s Garage custom rear spoiler.

2018 Ford Mustang Fastback by DeBerti Design

Professional racer Brad Deberti designed the black beauty you see here. The 2018 Ford Mustang GT is outfitted with a Roush supercharger and the body was widened to fit Mickey Thompson 18-inch-wide rear tires and surprisingly tasteful Forgiato wheels. Up front it gets a DeBerti billet grille and Bullseye Retro custom headlights.

Under its glossy and matte black-painted hood, there’s a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It sports a Watson Racing independent rear suspension with H&R Performance adjustable springs and struts. Ford Performance brakes with blood red-painted calipers help slow the pony down, while its Borla exhaust helps to announce your arrival or departure.

Destiny 2 Servers Down for Maintenance

by Seth G. Macy

If you're hoping to get in some Destiny 2 time today, you'll need to wait until later today, as the servers are currently undergoing maintenance.

The server maintenance is expected to last around 4 hours, according to Bungie. The maintenance period is scheduled to end at 12 Pacific Time, or 3 pm ET/8 pm GMT/6 am ACT.

Bungie didn't give a reason for the maintenance, but offers a generic explanation on the help page, saying Destiny servers will sometimes undergo "scheduled or emergency maintenance,"  or add updates "to address gameplay issues or add in-game features."

The Bungie Help Twitter account warned of today's downtime beginning yesterday.

How to Make Destiny 2 Even Better

by IGN Staff
Chris M

I do wish the farm was used more. I like the idea of it being a clan based gathering.

Destiny 2 launched in much better shape than the original game. It tells a much better story filled with interesting characters, features a really smart leveling curve, and adds a ton of quality of life improvements. Plus, a pretty dope Raid hit just a week after the game launched.

Still, there are ways that Bungie can make Destiny 2 even better. Here are some of our suggestions.

As of right now, Lost Sectors are little more than bland caves filled with a slew of random enemies and one single high-level boss. It’d be great if Bungie expanded these a bit and made them feel more like small, self-contained dungeons. Maybe some puzzles, a bit of story and lore, and differing atmospheres to incentivize exploring their depths.

Destiny 2 Leviathan Prestige Raid Delayed

by Hope Corrigan
Chris M

one day...

Bungie has delayed Destiny 2's Leviathan Prestige Raid.

In a post on the game's official forums, Bungie said an exploit was discovered in the Leviathan Raid that makes its enemy encounters easier than they should be. Since this could potentially tarnish the legacy of the team who earns the World First Bonus for completing the more difficult, Prestige version of the Raid, the developer has decided to postpone its launch to fix the exploit.

As such, Destiny 2's first Prestige Raid will now go live on Wednesday, October 18 at 10am PT/1pm ET/6pm UK (October 19 at 4am AET).

The Leviathan Prestige Raid was announced last week among a slew of other new content, including Destiny 2's first Iron Banner event and new armor sets.

It's a wise long term investment in your gaming happiness. Not only can picking up the best headset for gaming make games more immersive than you might have realized was possible, but they can allow for better communication between teammates as well. Flexible Pick Up Gripper

Chris M

great for picking up bolts that you drop inside an engine bay.

An incredibly handy $2 tool that seems utterly trivial until you have one, but finds its own uses once you do. It’s a snaky picker-upper, about two feet long, able to pick up things deep in pipes, behind furniture, in holes, cracks, and gaps. I use it all the time, mostly for rescues that simply couldn’t be achieved otherwise. Seems to last forever with occasional lubrication.

Watch Ken Block Tempt Death Climbing Pikes Peak in a 1,400-HP Mustang

by Collin Woodard
Chris M

such a nasty car..

Back in 2014, Ken Block unveiled one of the most extreme Mustangs ever: a 1965 coupe with 845 hp and all-wheel drive. After driving it for a few years, Block decided that wasn’t enough power. So last year, he and his team added two turbochargers and a methanol injection system that gave the Hoonicorn a whopping 1,400 hp. At the time, Block called it “frightening to drive,” saying “it’s trying to kill me. It’s like nothing I’ve ever driven.”

But how do you properly test a car that’s so powerful, it even frightens Ken Block? You take it on a Pikes Peak hill climb, film it, and call it Climbkhana, of course.

Over the course of 156 turns, more than 12 miles, and at more than 14,000 feet, Block throws caution to the wind, hanging the Hoonicorn’s tail out, obliterating the tires, and pulling off some extremely dangerous-looking drifts. One mistake in any of those corners, and he would have been off the edge. Thankfully, that never happened, because as you can see, drop-offs that massive aren’t the kind anyone walks away from.

Since we know he made it through safely, it makes Climbkhana a little easier to watch, but seeing Block flirt with certain death like that will still have you on the edge of your seat. How he stayed calm during filming, we have no idea.

Rockstar has announced that it will release something related to Red Dead Redemption 2 next Thursday, September 28 at 8am PT / 11am ET / 4pm UK (or 1am AEST on September 29).

The developer made the typically cryptic announcement on Twitter, using the Red Dead colour scheme and font:

What that reveal might be is another matter. We'd hazard a guess at a trailer that offers more idea of its story - it would be much the same approach as GTA V, which was announced first with a 'mood' trailer featuring its setting, and followed up with more specific plot material.

Changing Seasons, Falling Leaves, and Your Car

by Kimberlea Buczeke
Chris M

I'd wax at least every few months. That's why the Ranger looks so good...

As the weather begins to cool down, our thoughts turn to football, bonfires, and all things pumpkin spice. You may also think of the fall foliage that's either here or on its way! The gorgeous reds, oranges, and yellows of fall are spectacular to look at, but did you know that those beautiful fall leaves can actually cause damage to your car?

Okay so technically a leaf or two isn't going to cause too many issues, but left unchecked – or unbrushed off – those leaves can do some serious damage to your paint job, especially if you drive an older vehicle without that fresh clear coat it once sported.

fall leaves truck

How do leaves damage my car's paint?

Falling leaves contain residual amounts of sap and pollen that can damage the surface of your paint. If the leaves are wet or damp, acid leeches out of the leaves and penetrate the clear coat to cause dull spots and peeling. If allowed to accumulate, wet leaves can cause rust to form, especially if pieces of leaves get trapped behind moldings and trim. If wet leaves stick to the surface of your car and remain there until dry, you can be left with a leaf print in your paint. Now, that works great if you are trying to create a camouflage effect, but most people don't want to drive around in a car with leaf fossils embedded in the paint.

Leaves can damage more than just the paint.

Piles of leaves trapped between the body and hood can cause damage to the air conditioning and heat system by sucking in little pieces of leaf debris. Leaves left to accumulate can block air inflow and damage the engine or heating system. Additionally, rotting leaves can cause mold and mildew to grow, which can get into your cabin air filter and make it a very unpleasant ride in your car.

So, how can you protect your car from falling leaves?

A few simple steps can make all the difference. First, just try not to park directly under trees. This will help prevent large buildups of leaves on your car.

Second, if leaves do appear on the surface of your car, hose them off as soon as possible. Resist the urge to wipe them off with your hand or a brush because you can actually scratch your paint. If you're gentle enough, however, a quick brush off shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just watch for jewelry and rings, along with spiky leaves.

Third, lift the hood and use an air compressor or high power vacuum to remove any leaves or pieces of leaves that you see. When you take your car in for routine maintenance, ask them to inspect the engine compartment and ensure no leaves have accumulated in places they shouldn't be!

Lastly, keep your car washed and waxed at regular intervals. Visit your car wash and take advantage of undercarriage sprayers and high-pressure wands to get to every nook and cranny of your car. Apply a coat of strong, durable wax to help protect the paint from acid and sap in leaves.

If you take these steps to protect your car, you can enjoy to the majesty of the fall foliage without being worried about damage. Go ahead, take a road trip, sip on a pumpkin spice latté, and look at the beautiful colors!

The 5 Most Horrific Car Accidents in History

by Certified Master Techs
Chris M

Number 1 was right up the road.

Can you believe it’s been almost two decades since Princess Diana died in a tragic car accident?

In trying to avoid the paparazzi, the black 1994 Mercedes-Benz S280 they were riding in crashed into the 13th pillar of the Pont D’Alma tunnel.

Of course, as shocking as Diana’s death was, there were other horrific car accidents that still haunt people to this day.

Here are five of the most awful car accidents ever recorded in history. We hope they convince you to drive safely.

1. I-75 Fog Zone Accident – 1990

In a previous post, we talked about how important it is to avoid distractions while driving. However, there are some distractions you can’t avoid.

On the morning of December 11, 1990, a dense fog formed formed on Interstate 75 near Calhoun, Tennessee.

This thick and heavy fog killed 12 people and left 42 injured. To this day, the I-75 fog zone accident remains as one of the worst traffic accidents not just in Tennessee but in all of the United States.

2. Ayrton Senna’s Final Race – 1994

You can’t be a fan of F1 and not know about Ayrton Senna. The three-time world champion veered off the track and slammed into the crash barriers at the San Marino Grand Prix on May 1, 1994.

According to GulfNews.com, Senna was one of the last remaining drivers to have perished in a Grand Prix. The most recent was Jules Bianchi, who died from serious head injuries in 2015.

3. Autobahn Crash – 2009

If someone gets into a car accident today, the most one could hope for is that it won’t involve a pile-up.

On July 19, 2009, one of the most horrific car accidents occurred in Braunschweig, Germany.

259 vehicles were involved in the crash, which left 65 people injured. What caught motorists unaware were heavy rains, which were suddenly followed by blinding sunshine. To clear the carriageways and attend to the wounded, more than 350 firemen plus emergency service workers were called to the scene.

4. Paul Walker’s Fatal Car Crash – 2013

Paul Walker, best known for his role in the “Fast & Furious” movies, died on November 30, 2013. Based on the coroner’s report, the actor died after the Porsche he was riding in struck a tree and burst into flames.

It was a case of speeding gone wrong. The driver, Roger Rodas, who was the actor’s friend and financial adviser, was going over 100 mph when he lost control of the vehicle. It hit a tree then a light post and burst into flames.

Walker was still filming Fast & Furious 7 when the accident happened. He was only 40 years old.

5. Viola Beach Band Crash – 2016

All four members of the English indie rock band Viola Beach died after their car crashed in Södertälje, Sweden on February 13, 2016.

As far as horrific car accidents go, this is one case where the cause of the tragedy may never be known.

Autopsy results reveal that none of the members had taken drugs. The inquest also shows that while the car was moving slightly over the speed limit, the car was traveling in a controlled manner.

There was also nothing wrong with the car, barrier system, or even the protocols for raising the bridge.

Six months after the crash, the band scored a number one album, outselling ELO’s All Over The World and The Very Best Of.

Can Horrific Car Accidents Be Avoided?

No one knows for sure when an accident will occur. The best we can do is to follow safety tips to prevent accidents.

Never put yourself — or someone else — at risk when you get behind the wheel of a vehicle. You don’t want to end up on a list like this in the future.

PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner and Polish

Every one of their products is excellent.

After my project car sat on jack stands through the winter it took some deep cleaning to bring it back to daily driver duty. The headlights were a little hazed and got coated with redwood sap as well.

I bought a bottle of PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner and Polish on a trip to my local auto parts retailer to see if I could restore the original luster of my plastic headlight housings. I was surprised at the results and how easy it was.

My headlights were hazy, you couldn’t see the mirrors in the housing, and as I polished them with this cleaner and a lint-free rag I could see the plastic gain clarity right before my eyes. The difference it made was impressive, and I have used it to polish tail lights and plastic chrome trim as well.

One bottle has let me polish about six cars and there is plenty left. Much cheaper alternative to replacing those hazy plastic headlights. It literally takes minutes and helps your headlights shine brighter for safety on the road.

The Unprecedented Flooding in Houston, in Photos (28 photos)

DAMN

After Hurricane Harvey made landfall late Friday, the winds calmed, but the rainfall kept up, dropping historic amounts of water on southeastern Texas—with even more predicted in the next few days. Rising floodwaters have forced tens of thousands to flee, overburdening emergency services and filling shelters. So far, at least five deaths have been blamed on the storm. State and local authorities, as well as countless volunteers, have been working hard all weekend to rescue stranded residents and offer assistance to those in need.

Podcast #308: The Case for Blue Collar Work With Mike Rowe

by Brett
Chris M

A GOOD LISTEN.

In America, there’s an assumption that the most meaningful careers are found in office buildings, among those taking part in the information economy rather than in the nitty gritty of blue collar trades. To be eligible for these desirable white collar jobs, you need to take out tens of thousands of dollars in student loans so you can go to college for 4 years to get a degree. The sacrifice is always worth it though, or so we’re told.

My guest today on the show has made a career of questioning this narrative. In fact, he argues that our obsession with 4-year colleges and white collar work, to the denigration of the blue collar kind, has left us economically and spiritually poorer both on the individual and national level. His name is Mike Rowe.

You might have seen his popular show Dirty Jobs. Since his time as a TV host, he’s become an ardent advocate for trade work through his foundation mikeroweWORKS.

Today on the show, Mike and I discuss where the idea for Dirty Jobs came from and why a show about blue collar workers became a surprise hit. We then explore why we devalue blue collar work, the societal and individual consequences of that devaluation, and what Mike is doing to make pursuing vocational and trade work cool and viable again.

If you’re a young man trying to figure out if college and an office job is right for you, or if you’re a guy in a dead end office job looking for an alternative, Mike’s going to make a strong case for why you should consider putting on a hard hat and getting your hands dirty.

Show Highlights

  • Mike’s experience hosting Dirty Jobs
  • How sheep castration changed everything for Mike
  • The reality of how enlightenment often happens
  • How Mike became disconnected from how the world works
  • Why manual labor and the trades aren’t seen as aspirational
  • How higher education became the default next step for high school graduates
  • The unfortunate stereotypes and pop culture images attached to trade workers
  • The skills gap in the workforce
  • Why people are unhappy in their jobs, and what really makes for career enjoyment
  • The difference between finding your passion and being passionate about what you do
  • Why “follow your passion” is the worst advice that can possibly be given
  • The societal consequences of the skills gap
  • The challenges faced in addressing our country’s aging infrastructure (and aging trade workers)
  • The skills and trades that are most needed today
  • What keeps people from entering into the trades
  • The foundation that Mike started to promote blue collar work

A World Without People (35 photos)

insane... The waste of all of the Olympic venues is ridiculous.

Updated on May 28, 2017

For a number of reasons, natural and human, people have evacuated or otherwise abandoned many places around the world—large and small, old and new. Gathering images of deserted areas into a single photo essay, one can get a sense of what the world might look like if humans were to suddenly vanish from the planet. Collected here are recent scenes from abandoned construction projects, industrial disaster zones, blighted urban neighborhoods, towns where residents left to escape violence or natural disasters, derelict Olympic venues, ghost towns, and more.

Three Things You Should Always Have In Your Car

by Kimberlea Buczeke

Technological advances on modern vehicles are making it easier for us to identify issues that need to be fixed and can sometimes provide a false sense of security for drivers. Believing your car has you covered at all times can be a mistake for many. Aside from familiarizing yourself with safety features like your car's warning lights, and doing a quick review of your owner’s manual, being a diligent driver is important.

So how do you stay smart in driver's seat? Always keep these three things in your car!

1. Essential tools

Keeping some essentials in the car can make a huge difference in a bad situation. Stock up on kits that include jumper cables and a basic set of tools. Going a step further with a portable battery pack can make you less reliable on others and more self-sufficient in a sticky situation. You can even find tiny air compressors that will inflate your tires through the cigarette lighter. Getting back on the road quickly and safely is imperative.

Also, keep a car window hammer/seat belt cutter handy. This could be an invaluable tool if your vehicle is submerged in water. Even if you are not in a water related accident this tool still comes in handy by freeing you from your seat belt so that you can safely exit your vehicle. Ensure the tool also comes with a puncture mechanism, making sure you can puncture your airbag quickly to exit the vehicle safely in the event of an accident. Being able to distance yourself from a crash site may prove to be valuable.

2. A basic first aid kit

A basic First Aid Kit should be a staple item in your emergency vehicle stash. This item can be helpful in the event of an accident, or even in the event of a small injury. If you travel to remote areas in your vehicle for work or for recreational purposes then this kit may be useful. There are multiple varieties available for purchase online.

3. Bottled water

But wait, I thought I wasn't supposed to leave bottled water in a hot car? Well, it's not necessarily just for drinking. Water can come in handy for many different reasons with your car.

Did mud or debris come up on your windshield and the wipers aren't cutting it? Break out the water to help scrub off the debris. Car overheats and you're in a bind with no coolant? Water can be put directly in the radiator to get you from Point A to Point B, and we hope Point B is a Certified shop to get that checked out! In an emergency situation? Drink it! Keeping water in the car can be a lifesaver on many different levels.
