As reported in Whisky Advocate magazine’s summer 2016 issue, Lagavulin distillery is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. As a tribute to the distillery managers throughout Lagavulin’s history, Diageo announced today the upcoming release of a sherry cask matured Lagavulin 25 year old. It is a limited edition cask strength bottling. Only 8,000 bottles produced, 1,200 of which will be released in the U.S. in early fall. It has a suggested retail price of $1,200.00 per 750 ml. See the press release included below for further details.
Lagavulin™ Releases 25 Year Old Limited Edition Bottling
to Honour 200 Years of Distillery Managers
2016 continues to be a year of celebration for Lagavulin as the Iconic Islay distillery marks its 200th anniversary with a limited edition release. This Lagavulin 25 Year Old release is a recognition of the contribution the Lagavulin distillery managers have made in crafting Lagavulin across the years. Lagavulin is treasured around the world as one of the most special Single Malt Scotch Whiskies and this is the first 25 Year Old release to be matured exclusively in sherry casks.
200 years ago, John Johnston & Archibald Campbell oversaw the first new make spirit distilled. Since that day the distillery managers have carried on the Lagavulin legacy, creating an acclaimed spirit on the shores of the Isle.
Georgie Crawford, distillery manager at the Lagavulin distillery said: “For two centuries, Lagavulin has been crafted through the hands of hard working Islay residents; from peat cutters to warehousemen; the characters that make Lagavulin what it is today share a passion for producing an award winning Islay dram, and I am proud to say that I am part of this passionate group of people.”
This 25 Year Old is an ode to the many craftsmen and immense skill behind making Lagavulin whisky. With the typical peaty, rich and iconic flavours of Lagavulin, this special bottling follows the earlier release of Lagavulin 8 Year Old this year, which marked the start of the #Lagavulin200 anniversary celebrations.
Dr Nick Morgan, Diageo’s Head of Whisky Outreach adds: “To continue this special birthday we wanted to release a brand new bottling to Lagavulin enthusiasts worldwide. The 25 Year Old is a sublime expression of Lagavulin, I couldn’t think of a better way to pay homage to the distillery managers. This year our aim is to bring as many people to Islay and Islay to as many people from around the globe as possible to celebrate years of craft and passion.”
Cramped and chaotic by nature, this sea front distillery can never be expanded and therefore demand often exceeds supply. Bottled at natural cask strength and with only 8,000 individually numbered bottles worldwide (1,200 bottles in the US), this extremely limited edition will become a beautiful collector’s item that will rest comfortably on any whisky connoisseur or collectors’ cabinet around the world.

I ONLY JUST LEARNED ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF THIS MUSHROOM????? WHICH ERUPTS FROM AN EGG BEFORE UNCURLING HELLISH ARMS, EXPOSING ITS STICKY MASS OF SPORES TO BE SPREAD BY FLIES ATTRACTED BY THE SCENT OF ROTTING FLESH???
Admittedly, I am easily won over by all organisms that attract flies with the scent of rotting flesh. But the octopus stinkhorn (Clathrus archeri) also has tentacles, a freaky egg stage, and blackish goop, so it’s my favorite now.

EmahlstadtI've heard rumors the Big XII might be looking to boot Baylor from the conference.
Lights on, roaches scattering.
As detailed here, the Big XII has formally renewed its request that Baylor turn over documentation on any and all sexual assault investigations that have taken place at the University, leaving no wiggle room:
The Big 12 Board of Directors is gravely and deeply concerned by media reports about activities involving the athletics program at Baylor University. On May 24, 2016, the Big 12 Board requested a full accounting of the circumstances surrounding the sexual assaults at the University. At this time the Board is only privy to information that has been made available to the public.
Today, Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby sent a letter to Baylor University Interim President David Garland once again requesting all documents associated with the investigations of sexual assaults at Baylor. This request is for written materials as well as any information that has been conveyed orally to University leadership or to its Board of Regents including, but not limited to, the unedited written or verbal information from Pepper Hamilton, omitting only the names of any involved students. Internal documents pertinent to the investigation have also been requested.
Because many of the incidents at Baylor reportedly involve student-athletes, the Conference is appropriately concerned with discovery of the facts. The Big 12 is primarily configured to facilitate fair competition among its members and compliance to the rules of both the Conference and NCAA. To that end, full disclosure is vital to assess the impact on the Big 12.
"All of our member universities consider student safety and security to be paramount among institutional responsibilities," said Bowlsby. "The Big 12 Board of Directors, each member of the Conference and its student-athletes want to convey that our thoughts, concerns and sympathies are with the Baylor survivors and their families."
Following the Hindenburg-class trial balloon that some Baylor boosters tried to float last week around re-instating Art Briles, it looked like the operative plan was simply to hunker down and weather the siege. Retain all coaches (despite the BOR's own Finding of Facts document intimating wrongdoing by multiple members of the staff,) lock down and hotbox all 2016 recruits until they lost their resolve, use Jim Grobe's reputation as a force field to deflect the barrage at Big XII Media Days, settle with every victim who was filing or contemplating suit and just wait for any more Texas Monthly articles to blow over and for the national media to move on.
Waiting out a siege can be a highly effective strategy when you doubt the resolve of the people outside your walls.
But we might have just heard Wun Wun's fist hit the gate.
EmahlstadtWhat a piece of garbage. Why do they still let Keiji Inafune make games, and why do people still back his projects?

(Longmont, CO, Brevard, NC & Austin, TX) — Oskar Blues Brewery is twisting up a PINNER for beer drinkers to lust after this summer with its Passion Fruit PINNER Throwback IPA strain, the sultry spinoff to the brand’s existing PINNER Throwback IPA. The limited release brew will launch at the end of June and will blaze in all 50 states where Oskar Blues CANs are sold.
Passion Fruit PINNER IPA (4.9% ABV, 40 IBUs) accentuates the passion fruit and citrus juice attributes of the original PINNER and cranks them up to 11. The clean malts with hints of toasted biscuit pair with zesty hops to spice up the taste and aromas from immense additions of pureed passion fruit and a small spike of pureed Blood Orange.
“Passion fruit is very prominent in PINNER Throwback IPA’s dry-hopped flavor spectrum, locking in on that and accentuating it alongside the existing mouthfeel and clean malt characteristics is a natural extension of what this beer is all about,” said head brewer Tim Matthews. “Melding fruit aromas and flavors with a lower ABV beer creates a killer light and refreshing Passion Fruit Pinner IPA for getting after it this summer.”

The internet loves cats. So much so, in fact, that talking about how much the internet loves cats has actually become a bit of a trope on the internet. Weirdly, though, the internet’s favorite cat, Pusheen, is actually just a cartoon of a cat. The chubby gray tabby of Facebook-sticker fame would never be able to shit in a litter box or barf on your shoes. Until now.
Julien Therrien—who writes for a French-Canadian humor site called Les Populaires—realized that his cat, Jackie, bore more than a passing resemblance to Pusheen. So Therrien did what any normal cat owner would do: He bought a bunch of props and spent the day posing his cat like various Pusheen stickers.
And finally, here’s a behind the scenes shot of Jackie during her Pusheen photo shoot.
Julien Therrien is a hero for these modern times.

EmahlstadtAwesome.
(Escondido, CA) – Stone Brewing announces True Craft, a company established to invest in craft breweries which are dedicated to remaining true to the definition of craft beer. Representing camaraderie in the industry, True Craft will make minority investments in craft brewers while allowing those breweries to retain their independent soul and control.
“Some people start companies to sell out. Some start companies because they are compelled to follow their passion. True Craft is for the latter,” said Greg Koch, Stone CEO & co-founder. “Craft beer needs an alternative model to the one that requires founders to sell their company in its entirety. In a world in which there are constant forces toward homogenization and fitting in, I specifically want to foster a world of uniqueness, depth and character.”
Outspoken about their commitment not to sell out to Big Beer, the co-founders of Stone have been investigating an alternative that would provide financing and operational guidance to small brewers who might otherwise have few options to protect the passion, heart and soul of their company. A year and a half in the making, Stone will be participating in True Craft as a founding member. The new venture has received an initial $100,000,000 brought forth from an investor group committed to the long term model. True Craft will welcome a handful of the best craft brewers in the business alongside Stone Brewing. Each brewery may participate in True Craft and in turn the company will provide minority investments to its members with minimal stipulations. All breweries will be aligned in the philosophical mindset of banding together to preserve craft while retaining full soul and control of their businesses for years to come.
“This is about setting up a consortium so we can not just survive, but continue to thrive in a world in which craft is being co-opted by Big Beer,” said Steve Wagner, Stone President & co-founder. “This allows companies like Stone to follow an ethos that involves independence and passion for the artisanal. By investing in True Craft now, we can be confident that our vision is locked in beyond our professional lifetimes and we feel privileged to help others in our industry do the same.”
True Craft’s detailed structure is still in formation and will be announced at a later date.

How has the representation of evil, monsters, and things that go bump in the night changed over the many years of cinematic horror? One new video essay purports to showcase the genre in its many scary guises through the decades.
A History of Horror from Diego Carrera on Vimeo.
Diego Carrera has created “A History Of Horror,” which takes a sequence from one horror film per year from 1895 (The Execution Of Mary, Queen Of Scots) all the way up to 2016 (The Witch). It’s a great sampling of influential shots, haunting moments, and films that have stayed with filmmakers and audiences for years due to their chilling nature. Accompanied by the song “Camino” by Murcof, the selections may be debatable, but Carrera has done a good job of weeding out what has stood the test of time and what has influenced the genre over its many permutations. Peppy, colorful customizable Xbox One controllers are coming. Well, in September, anyway. That said, you can still design and order the controller of your multi-colored dreams right now, online at the Xbox Design Lab. Until then, here are some design suggestions, direct from Xbox's booth at E3. With the choice of colors on the face and shoulder buttons, joysticks, the controller's faceplate and more, there are apparently eight million color combinations out there, so some guidance on your $80 custom 'pad may be appreciated. Blue thumbsticks sound like a good start.

For over 20 years, Bob Walden has worked as a freelance legal photographer throughout the New York City area. By the time he retired in 2012, he had worked on nearly 10,000 cases, most of them plaintiff’s negligence cases. Some of the scars, injuries and deformities he has captured would make the most stoic of eyes water but fellow photographers Collin LaFleche and Bonnie Briant are lifting the images out of their legal context so that they become “poetic meditations on the body and the body transformed.”

Stone Brewing announced today that venerable brewmaster Mitch Steele will be leaving the brewery to start one of his own. His last day will be June 1. Steele has been with Stone since 2006, crafting some of the brewery’s most iconic brews (Enjoy By IPA, Sublimely Self Righteous) and penning one of the definitive books on American IPAs, “IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale.” Here, he explains his departure and reminisces about his time at the brewery.
