Pop-Up Natural Wine Bar: Off the Beaten Path, Italy

Meet us at Crane & Turtle for a special evening to enjoy unique and rare Italian natural wines. From 5pm to close on Wednesday April 27th, we’ll have our pop-up wine bar and the patio open with delicious artisanal wines imported to DC for the first time! All wines are the product of the work and love of family wineries who wish to express terroir through minimal intrusion.

The wines:

+ Caneva da Nani: An artisanal ‘Col Fondo” Prosecco produced by a family in the heart of Veneto

+ Furlani: a high altitude biodynamic sparkling red from the Dolomites

+ Paterna: a Tuscan white produced by a small group of families practicing organic polyculture

+ Guglierame: a complex and deep rosé respecting the traditions of the local Ormeasco grape in the mountains of Liguria

+ Collecapretta and Vigneti Campanino: two different iterations of the Sangiovese grape from the secluded but fascinating region of Umbria

These natural wines, imported into Washington, D.C. for the first time, will be available by the glass, or as a flight, paired with delicious snacks. Come join us for this unexpected wine tour of Italy in Petworth!

in short

I tried to make a list of things that were “chicago” and found out most (but not all) of these things are not things i am very much into.

Not included: driving; driving large SUVs; honking while driving large SUVs; living in suburbs; racist cops; indoor rock-climbing; not minding pollution; Stalinists; socialists; literal white supremacists; Zizek fans (see Stalinists, above); John Belushi; spray tanning; automated car washes; steakhouses; craft beer; the band Chicago

Anyone got any hot relocation tips? I am dreaming of not being in the state of Illinois by 2017 (no offense to John Belushi, et. al.). Alls i want out of life is ruthlessly low rent in a nice college town with a few low-skilled jobs dangling within reach, very far from industrial toxins and very near a whole lot of woods containing as little tick-borne illness as possible. And maybe also a nice dog with short hair wandering around looking for a pal who can’t always afford the top-shelf kibble but will definitely be liberal with the treats and hangouts.

GMU Law School Renamed ‘Antonin Scalia School of Law’

by ARLnow.com

GMU Antonin Scalia School of Law announcement

(Updated at 4:55 p.m.) George Mason University’s Arlington-based law school has been renamed after the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

GMU agreed to rename the law school, based in the Virginia Square neighborhood, after receiving two donations for a total of $30 million, the largest combined gift in university history. Of the $30 million, $20 million came from an anonymous donor, via the Federalist Society, and $10 million was donated by the Charles Koch Foundation.

GMU’s Board of Visitors voted in favor of the new name this afternoon, the Wall Street Journal reported. Scalia, a McLean resident, passed away in his sleep on Feb. 13 while visiting a Texas ranch.

After the jump, the press release from George Mason University announcing the new name.

George Mason University today announces pledges totaling $30 million to the George Mason University Foundation to support the School of Law. The gifts, combined, are the largest in university history. The gifts will help establish three new scholarship programs that will potentially benefit hundreds of students seeking to study law at Mason.

In recognition of this historic gift, the Board of Visitors has approved the renaming of the school to The Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason University.

“This is a milestone moment for the university,” said George Mason University President Ángel Cabrera. “These gifts will create opportunities to attract and retain the best and brightest students, deliver on our mission of inclusive excellence, and continue our goal to make Mason one of the preeminent law schools in the country.”

Mason has grown rapidly over the last four decades to become the largest public research university in Virginia. The School of Law was established in 1979 and has been continually ranked among the top 50 law programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

Justice Scalia, who served 30 years on the U.S. Supreme Court, spoke at the dedication of the law school building in 1999 and was a guest lecturer at the university. He was a resident of nearby McLean, Virginia.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, his esteemed colleague on the Supreme Court for more than two decades, said Scalia’s opinions challenged her thinking and that naming the law school after him was a fine tribute.

“Justice Scalia was a law teacher, public servant, legal commentator, and jurist nonpareil. As a colleague who held him in highest esteem and great affection, I miss his bright company and the stimulus he provided, his opinions ever challenging me to meet his best efforts with my own. It is a tribute altogether fitting that George Mason University’s law school will bear his name. May the funds for scholarships, faculty growth, and curricular development aid the Antonin Scalia School of Law to achieve the excellence characteristic of Justice Scalia, grand master in life and law,” added Ginsburg.

“Justice Scalia’s name evokes the very strengths of our school: civil liberties, law and economics, and constitutional law,” said Law School Dean Henry N. Butler. “His career embodies our law school’s motto of learn, challenge, lead. As a professor and jurist, he challenged those around him to be rigorous, intellectually honest, and consistent in their arguments.”

The combined gift will allow the university to establish three new scholarship programs to be awarded exclusively and independently by the university:

Antonin Scalia Scholarship – Awarded to students with excellent academic credentials.

A. Linwood Holton, Jr. Leadership Scholarship – Named in honor of the former governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, this scholarship will be awarded to students who have overcome barriers to academic success, demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities, or have helped others overcome discrimination in any facet of life.

F.A. Hayek Law, Legislation, and Liberty Scholarship – Named in honor of the 1974 Nobel Prize winner in economics, this scholarship will be awarded to students who have a demonstrated interest in studying the application of economic principles to the law.
“The growth of George Mason University’s law school, both in size and influence, is a tribute to the hard work of its leaders and faculty members,” said Governor Terry McAuliffe. “I am particularly pleased that new scholarship awards for students who face steep barriers in their academic pursuits will be named in honor of former Virginia Governor Linwood Holton, an enduring and appropriate legacy for a man who championed access to education for all Virginians.”

The scholarships will help Mason continue to be one of the most diverse universities in America.

“When we speak about diversity, that includes diversity of thought and exposing ourselves to a range of ideas and points of view,” said Cabrera. “Justice Scalia was an advocate of vigorous debate and enjoyed thoughtful conversations with those he disagreed with, as shown by his longtime friendship with Justice Ginsburg. That ability to listen and engage with others, despite having contrasting opinions or perspectives, is what higher education is all about.”

The gift includes $20 million that came to George Mason through a donor who approached Leonard A. Leo of the Federalist Society, a personal friend of the late Justice Scalia and his family. The anonymous donor asked that the university name the law school in honor of the Justice. “The Scalia family is pleased to see George Mason name its law school after the Justice, helping to memorialize his commitment to a legal education that is grounded in academic freedom and a recognition of the practice of law as an honorable and intellectually rigorous craft,” said Leo.

The gift also includes a $10 million grant from the Charles Koch Foundation, which supports hundreds of colleges and universities across the country that pursue scholarship related to societal well-being and free societies.

“We’re excited to support President Cabrera and Dean Butler’s vision for the Law School as they welcome new students and continue to distinguish Mason as a world-class research university,” said Charles Koch Foundation President Brian Hooks.

The name change is pending approval from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

A formal dedication ceremony will occur in the fall.

Grrrl Love and Revolution: Riot Grrrl New York City
This film is showing at Mt. Pleasant Library Thursday [3160 16th St. NW], March 31st at 7:00 p.m.

Mt. Pleasant filmmaker Abby Moser spent most of the 1990s documenting the feminist punk movement Riot Grrrl in NYC. The film that came out of this footage and her own participation in the movement, “Grrrl Love and Revolution: Riot Grrrl NYC”, premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC (2011). The video traces its roots to the Olympia, Washington and Washington DC punk scenes, to radical feminism and the lesbian and gay rights movements of the 70s and 80s, and to early women punk rockers.”

Arlington Pet of the Week: Murphy the Bulldog

MURPHY

IMG_0010 IMG_0389 FullSizeRender (7) IMG_0033 IMG_0035 IMG_0039 IMG_0452

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Murphy, an English bulldog who’s described as a “slow motion love machine” with “large, doleful, brown eyes and saggy jowls.”

Here’s owner Caroline’s literary treatise on her loyal and low-key companion.

Murphy is my five-year old English Bulldog. He’s big and white like Moby Dick, but unlike that sea-shouldering murderous beast, Murphy is a dreamer and slow motion love machine. He slowly wakes to each new day, savoring the transition from dreams of the impossible — visions of his stubby legged form running with gray hounds or leaping eight foot fences with Dobermans.

A soft yawn is all he can manage as he lounges in bed waiting for me, his mom, to rouse him fully

Then he’s up with a stretch and a shake, and we take a leisurely walk around his apartment building. On the sidewalk he looks up with large, doleful, brown eyes and saggy jowls at passersby He knows what that look will do to the hearts of those good sweet people hustling off to a day of tedious, tiring work. His eyes catch theirs, and then he stops and stands patiently as if he were a passenger waiting to board a love train. The passersby stop as well then, and smile, and ask me his name. “Murphy,” I say, and that makes them laugh: “Of course!” they chortle. “Mr. Murphy.” Then they bend low and extend a hand. Murphy stands at attention, stolid and dignified as Sir Winston Churchill. The hand strokes his head. His eyes go limpid and liquid. He turns his head to the left, begging a scratch behind his right ear. He breathes a little faster. “Big boy,” the neighbor or stranger says, “Such a good big boy.” Something in the way his hind end wags the tiniest wag tells me Murphy knows this is true

The effort of the morning works up a fierce appetite. We go back to the apartment, tired and content. A bowl of food to restore his energy, a long nap on his chaise lounge in the sun to pursue his dreams and the day passes to evening.

The people of the evening are always in a hurry — “Home, home,” their rapid pace declares, “I must get home.” But then they see Murphy and me, out for our evening constitutional along Columbia Pike.

They have no chance against the request of his bulldog eyes and delap face.

We walk back to the apartment and a meal. His is taken from a bowl on the floor, mine from the kitchen table. After dinner Murphy and I unwind on the couch. Around 9 pm, as soon as I sit down to watch a show or read a book after a long day of work, Murphy will usually experience a burst of energy! A game of tug-of-war with his green rubber ball is his favorite way to cap off the night.

He sleeps the sleep of the righteous, dreams the dreams of a bulldog, and a new day will dawn.

“Muslim women reclaim safe space at Shaw Library” Saturday 2pm

by Prince Of Petworth

10409656_10153528408477336_4579082574448767544_n

From Collective Action for Safe Spaces (CASS) and Muslim American Women’s Policy Forum (MAWPF):

“Collective Action for Safe Spaces (CASS) and Muslim American Women’s Policy Forum (MAWPF) invite you to join us at the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Library on Saturday, March 26th at 2pm for Women Wearing Headscarves, an event to reclaim safe public spaces for everyone, especially Muslim communities experiencing Islamophobia in the District.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 23rd, CASS Executive Director Jessica Raven witnessed a horrifying act of discrimination and abuse of power by a DC Public Library officer. The officer harassed a woman who was quietly reading in the Shaw Library and intimidated the woman with handcuffs for refusing to remove her hijab. He told the woman to remove the hijab or leave the library.

Our collective organizations have released this public statement calling on the DC Public Library and other public institutions to address Islamophobia through a public information campaign and improved staff training. We are also calling on DC Council to convene a listening session that invites Muslim communities, which includes all various ethnicities and racial groups, to discuss their experiences with discrimination, bias, racism, and Islamophobia in the District.

We are disappointed that the DC Public Library has minimized this problem as “an isolated incident,” disregarding the context of growing Islamophobia nationwide. We urge the DC Public Library and other public institutions to adopt proactive solutions to prevent future incidents of harassment and discrimination.

RSVP to attend Women Wearing Headscarves: Muslim Women Reclaim Safe Spaces.
