ZTE Blade L2 launched with low-end specs, disappointing screen resolution
Most, if not all of the smartphones that have so far been part of ZTE’s Blade series, along with their carrier-branded versions, have been sold quite well in parts of Europe at least. So the Chinese company, obviously proud of those past accomplishments, has now introduced a new member in this line. And, like its predecessors, it will probably be extremely affordable. Yet unlike the other Blades before it this has one serious flaw. Let’s talk specs first though, before going into that.
The ZTE Blade L2 comes with a 5-inch 480×854 touchscreen, a 5 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 0.3 MP front camera, a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, 3G, dual-SIM support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and a 2,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Its dimensions are 142.5×72.2×8.95 mm.
The camera is pretty low-res but still (barely) acceptable for a low-end device, there is no mention of microSD card expansion in the official press release but we’re hoping that’s just an oversight and it is actually there, the OS version this handset runs is positively ancient – but the most glaring issue with the Blade L2 is its screen.
Not the size, mind you, for 5 inches is quickly becoming the new mainstream. No, we’re talking about that appalling resolution. Unless your eyesight is really bad or you simply love counting pixels, a 5-inch touchscreen with 480×854 resolution is just a big no-no.
And that’s a shame, for many may have accepted the other compromises this phone makes if it’s going to be aggressively priced. But with such a low-res display, it’s unclear who this is for exactly. Perhaps ZTE is targeting people who don’t know what the concept of screen resolution is. In that case, it’s sure to have some pretty disappointed customers, and fast. And it’s unlikely that those people will ever buy a ZTE smartphone again.
Anyway, if you must know – the ZTE Blade L2 is now out in Greece and Spain, and it will arrive in Germany, the UK, Slovakia, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela at some point before 2015 comes knocking. It will only be available in white, as pictured in the image above.
Xiaomi’s upcoming MI3S has its specs leaked via benchmark

Xiaomi’s next flagship smartphone will be called MI3S, and back in February we heard it would be announced in April. That month has come and gone and the handset still isn’t official, but it might become so very soon.
That’s because someone owning a prototype of the MI3S seems to have put it through the paces of the AnTuTu benchmark. Thankfully, that means we get a look at the most important specs of the upcoming device.
The Xiaomi MI3S will therefore come with a 5-inch 1080p Full HD touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera, an 8 MP front camera, a 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, and Android 4.4 KitKat running the show.
Other specs are still a mystery though it’s easy to assume we’ll also see support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 150 Mbps 4G LTE (based on the chipset used), and probably a LED flash for the main camera.
The hardware innards that have been leaked today are certainly worthy of a flagship smartphone for this day and age, and they’ll keep people happy until the MI4 lands in the second half of this year. That particular handset has been rumored to come with a 2,560×1,440 touchscreen and a next-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor.
According to the guys behind the AnTuTu benchmark, the MI3S might get announced on May 15 and we could see it become available for order within the next month.

The Yulong Coolpad 9970L is a big phablet from Asia, that comes with 3 GB of RAM and other pretty good specs. This model is supposed to work fine in nations like China for example and it comes with Android 4.4.2 KitKat on board.
The CPU inside is a quad core one clocked at 2.3 GHz, a Snapdragon 801, the one found on the 2014 flagships from Samsung, HTC and Sony. The screen of the phablet is a 5.85 inch Full HD one and at the back there’s a 13 megapixel shooter with stacked CMOS. Upfront there’s a 2 MP shooter and this model brings TD-LTE and CDMA, so use in China is assured. The product measures 7.9 mm in thickness and weighs 193.6 grams.
The design is pretty basic in the case of the Coolpad 9970L, but seeing the Home button at the bottom, it may feel like a Galaxy S or Galaxy Note, but an older edition, since it has a rounded design. There also seem to be sensors at the top, next to the front camera. There’s no price here sadly…

Még márciusban jelentette be az NVIDIA az új csúcskártyáját, a GeForce GTX Titan Z-t, amely két GPU-val rendelkezik, de inkább az árazásával került be hamar a köztudatban, ugyanis 3000 dolláros árat határozott meg rá a chipgyártó. Az EVGA az elsők között lehet amely piacra dobja a saját Titan Z kártyáit, ráadásul rögtön három verzióban is megjelenik a kártya.
A legolcsóbbnak nevezhető megoldás a referencia kivitele a GeForce GTX Titan Z-nek, amely 12 GB RAM-ot tartalmaz majd, a hátoldalán pedig két DVD, egy HDMI, valamint egy DisplayPort csatlakozó lesz. Ennek az ára Magyarországon csak kevéssel marad majd 1 millió forint alatt, nagyjából nettó 2500 eurós (~3400 USD) árnak felel ez meg.
Az EVGA SuperClocked sorozatában is megjelenik egy Titan Z variáns, ez szintén 12 GB RAM-mal rendelkezik, mellé várhatóan minimálisan emelt órajeleket kap majd a felhasználó. Ennek az ára borsosabb, Az EVGA GeForce GTX Titan Z SuperClocked nagyjából bruttó 1 030 000 forintba kerül majd, euróban nézve ez már közel 2600 eurót jelent nettóban (~3600 USD).
A legdrágább modell az EVGA GeForce GTX Titan Z Hydro Cooper, amely ahogyan a neve is mutatja, gyárilag vízhűtéssel jelenik meg, azaz akár ventilátor zaj nélkül is hűthetővé válik a két GPU. Ennek az ára éppen csak bruttó 1 200 000 forint alatt nyithat majd, ami már-már horrorisztikus, ha egyetlen egy videokártyáról beszélünk csak. Ez nagyjából nettó 3000 eurónak felel meg, vagy 4200 dollárnak, ami jóval több, mint az NVIDIA referencia kártya ajánlott ára.

Acer, ASUS, Dell and Lenovo have big plans concerning Chromebooks and Intel is also in the mix, providing its Bay Trail processors for these devices. These low power chips provide great battery lives for the laptops and also low heat.
These models are supposed to be the first Intel-powered Chrome OS laptops with fanless designs. Intel claims that some models will offer up to 11 hours of battery life and that systems will measure about 0.7 inches in thickness. They could end up being lighter than Chromebooks with Haswell chips. Some of them will rely on Intel Atom processors, while others will opt for more potent Celerons or Pentium models.
Unusual formats are also included, like Lenovo’s N20p Chromebook, that has a touchscreen display folding back 300 degrees. This week ASUS introduced the C200 Chromebook, an 11.6 inch model with 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage and the Intel Celeron N2830 dual core Bay Trail M processor inside. There’s also a 13 inch C300 from ASUS in the making right now. All we need are prices before actually deciding if these are worth it or not.

AMD is also working on a new 64-bit x86 Core
Jim Keller joined Mark Papermaster on stage at AMD's Core Innovation Update press conference and added a few more details to AMD's K12 announcement. Keller stressed AMD's expertise in building high frequency cores, as well as marrying the strengths of AMD's big cores with those of its low power cores. The resulting K12 core is a 64-bit ARM design, but Jim Keller also revealed that his team is working on a corresponding 64-bit x86 core.
The x86 counterpart doesn't have a publicly known name at this point, but it is a new design built from the ground up.
AMD Announces K12 Core: Custom 64-bit ARM Design in 2016
In 2015 AMD will launch project SkyBridge, a pair of pin-compatible ARM and x86 based SoCs. Leveraging next generation Puma+ x86 cores or ARM's Cortex A57 cores, these SoCs form the foundation of the next phase in AMD's evolution where ARM and x86 are treated like equal class citizens. As I mentioned in today's post however, both of these designs really aim at the lower end of the performance segment. To address a higher performance market, AMD is doing what many ARM partners have done and is leveraging an ARM architecture license to design their own microarchitecture.
In 2016 AMD will release its first custom 64-bit ARMv8 CPU core, codenamed K12. Jim Keller is leading the team that is designing the K12, as well as a corresponding new 64-bit x86 design. AMD is pretty quiet about K12 details at this point given how far away it is. Given the timing I'm assuming we're talking about a 14/16nm FinFET SoC. On the slide above we see that AMD is not only targeting servers and embedded markets, but also ultra low power client devices for its 64-bit ARM designs (presumably notebooks, chromebooks, tablets). AMD has shied away from playing in the phone market directly, but it could conceivably play in that space with its semi-custom business (offering just a CPU/GPU core with other IP). Update: AMD added that server, embedded and semi-custom markets are obvious targets for K12.
There's also this discussion of modularity, treating both ARM and x86 cores as IP modules rather than discrete designs. AMD continues to have a lot of expertise in SoC design, all it really needs is a focus on improving single threaded performance. I can only hope (assume?) that K12 won't be Bulldozer-like and will hopefully prioritize single threaded performance. It's important to point out that there hasn't been a single reference to the Bulldozer family of CPU cores in any of these announcements either...
Update: Jim Keller added some details on K12. He referenced AMD's knowledge of doing high frequency designs as well as "extending the range" that ARM is in. Keller also mentioned he told his team to take the best of the big and little cores that AMD presently makes in putting together this design.
AMD Announces Project SkyBridge: Pin-Compatible ARM and x86 SoCs in 2015, Android Support
This morning AMD decided to provide an update on its CPU core/SoC roadmap, particularly as it pertains to the ARM side of the business. AMD already committed to releasing a 28nm 8-core Cortex A57 based Opteron SoC this year. That particular SoC is aimed at the enterprise exclusively and doesn't ship with an on-die GPU.
Next year, AMD will release a low-power 20nm Cortex A57 based SoC with integrated Graphics Core Next GPU. The big news? The 20nm ARM based SoC will be pin compatible with AMD's next-generation low power x86 SoC (using Puma+ cores). The ARM SoC will also be AMD's first official Android platform.
I don't expect we'll see standard socketed desktop boards that are compatible with both ARM and x86 SoCs, but a pin compatible design will have some benefits for embedded, BGA solutions. AMD expects to target embedded and client markets with these designs, not servers.
AMD's motivation behind offering both ARM and x86 designs is pretty simple. The TAM (Total Addressable Market) for x86 is decreasing, while it's increasing for ARM. AMD is no longer married to x86 exclusively and by offering OEMs pin compatible x86/ARM solutions it gets to play in both markets, as well as benefit if one increases at the expense of the other.
Note that we're still talking about mobile phone/tablet class CPU cores here (Cortex A57/Puma+). AMD has yet to talk about what it wants to do at the high end, but I suspect there's a strategy there as well.
