The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture housed in Wright’s Taliesin West has suspended new student enrollments for this fall as it might be facing loss of accreditation. The school’s leaders are discussing ways in which to reform the school’s current structure and protect the legacy of their famous founder. The latest idea is to offer a Master of Architecture combined with a residential research program for architecture professionals.

You're Nuts: First Person 'Mirror's Edge' Parkour Run

danipretto

whoa.

mirrors-edge-parkour.jpg In honor of Electronic Arts' announcement of a second Mirror's Edge video game, parkour and freerunning production house(?) Ampisound made this first-person Mirror's Edge themed run along the roofs of a bunch of buildings. It was scary. When it comes to parkour, this is really how you separate the men from the boys -- the risk of falling four stories and dying. I suppose you could also ask to see who has underarm hair, but then you'd just sound like a pervert. I collect happy trails! Hit the jump for the video.

Dogs are great: they listen to you (most of the time), they understand commands, and they’ll love you forever no matter what. While walking them can be a great joy, when the weather is miserable, the task of taking them around the block becomes just as hapless. But thanks to a pair of Auburn University researchers named Jeff Miller and David Bevly, you may soon be able to control your K-9 remotely from your computer.

MIT develops advanced fog harvesting material that pulls 5x more water from thin air

by Beth Buczynski

whoa.

MIT, fog, water, fog harvesting, desert, mountains, moisture, water conservation, drought,

Plants and certain animals like the fog beetle can survive in very arid regions because they’ve developed ways of absorbing minute amounts of water from the atmosphere. Learning from their example allowed us to develop fog harvesting technologies—basically giant nets that trap moisture in the foggy mist, and funnel all of the tiny droplets into a container where they add up to water we can drink. In 2013, scientists at MIT created an advanced fog harvesting material that enables these giant mist catchers to generate five times more water.

YOU SURE CAN, just like I do with Sharpies and my own ass. Just kidding, and if you're anybody who knows me in real life I don't really do that and am totally safe to borrow a pen from, promise. *fingers crossed behind back* Tehehehehe! Tesla is Sucking Up the World’s Lithium Ion Battery Supply, Kick Starting Cell Production

Green Car Reports says that Tesla is on track to deploy more than 1.6 million kilowatt-hour worth of batteries in 21,000 cars this year, and so far the electric carmaker has already sold 14,000 of its all-electric Model S luxury sedans. With plans to double the sales of the Model S by 2015, Tesla could very easily gobble up the world’s supply of cylindrical “18650″ lithium-ion batteries, spurring manufacturers to ramp up the global production of power cells.

Dare To Dream: Guy Tries To Get Drunk By Chugging 30 Non-Alcoholic Beers In An Hour (But Pukes After 28)

danipretto

sounds like a new carnival event

drunk-on-non-alcoholic-beer.jpg This is a video of Tim Janus trying to chug 30 non-alcoholic O'Douls in an hour to see if he can break the legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.08. He fails. After (amazingly) managing to put down 28 beers (336 ounces -- more than 2.5 gallons!) he only blows a 0.02, then pukes hard. So the next time somebody tells you they heard you can get drunk on non-alcoholic beer I want you to tell them 1. no you can't and 2. why would you want to anyways? Two $2.29 forties will get you right where you want to be just fine. Now shut up and let me borrow 60 cents for another one. Hit the jump for the video.

Lies: Scientists Claim Development Of Hangoverless Beer

danipretto

2.3% alcohol isn't even beer anymore! I'm pretty sure pet fish could survive in that. Call me when you develop an 8% beer that doesn't give me a hangover.

hangoverfree-beer.jpg A group of scientists in Australia claim they've developed a beer that helps prevent hangovers by adding electrolytes (the little lightning bolts found in Gatorade), which promote hydration and help prevent your pee from being the color of rust the next morning.
The new creation provides a third more hydration than a normal beer, and this increased fluid retention should also help prevent hangovers the following day. The scientists did have to reduce some of the beer's alcohol content to about 2.3% (versus 4.8% alcohol) for best results, but they report the additional ingredients do not affect its taste.
Wait -- you had to reduce the beer's alcohol content BY MORE THAN HALF? 2.3% alcohol isn't even beer anymore! I'm pretty sure pet fish could survive in that. Call me when you develop an 8% beer that doesn't give me a hangover. Granted I still won't answer, but when you call back to tell me you've develop RYE BOURBON that doesn't give me a hangover I'll rip my f***ing shirt off and swing it around over my head before saying you must have the wrong number. Thanks to Expunged, HT and Andy, who agree the real key to hangover prevention is hair-of-the-dogging-it the next morning. Boy, don't I know.

Ever been skinny dipping? There’s something exhilarating about gliding through the water in nothing but your birthday suit. But if you’re in Sweden or Denmark, now’s not the time to try it. A frightening invasive species related to the piranha has suddenly been spotted in the Danish/Swedish strait of Øresund. At just about 7 inches long, the pacu has a mouth full of powerful, crushing teeth, and it loves to nibble on stuff that happens to be, uh, floating through the water. Animal experts in the region are warning the boldest of male swimmers to keep their delicate parts under wraps to avoid a nasty accident.

The eco-friendly city of Portland, Oregon will soon be adding electric cars to its fleet of taxis. Luxury eco-touring company Tesla Trips was recently granted a livery license, and the company will soon begin offering rides in Tesla Model S sedans. Tesla Trips has already made a name for itself in Portland tourism, offering guided luxury tours of the Oregon countryside for wine and beer excursions. Zeo Will Transform Waste Paper and Water Into a Material as Hard as Ebony

i feel like this is fake.

Zeo transforms waste paper and water (and nothing else) into a patented molding material that sets as hard as ebony. The material, aptly called Zeoform, is expected to replace wood and wood composites, fiberglass and plastics in a host of everyday consumer items, industrial products and construction applications, cutting down on waste and conserving precious resources. The creators of Zeo will be launching a crowdfunding campaign at the Sydney EcoXpo on September the 20th called ‘One In A Million’. Police Officer Saves Nearly 100 Baby Sea Turtles in Florida

by Morgana Matus

loggerhead hatchling, sea turtle, conservation, baby, beach

Police officers are sworn to serve and protect the members of their community. For some cops, this extends even to the non-human residents under their watch. As he was patrolling the Lido Beach Resort in South Florida on Saturday August, 3 around 1 am, Officer Derek Conley spotted a group of baby sea turtles clustered around the hotel’s front door. A passerby told him that there were more of the obviously confused hatchlings in the parking lot. After calling the area’s two marine rescue groups, Conley—along with several guests—collected almost 900 babies into a box, and led them to the ocean. He even stopped traffic on several occasions to chauffeur his shelled charges into their rightful home in the nearby Gulf of Mexico.

Currently 36 percent of the food produced worldwide is used to feed animals, according to new research published in Environmental Research Letters. The study found that halving the amount of corn, soy and other grains we use for biofuel or to raise meat could feed an additional two billion people around the world. And while it might not have been mentioned, having less cows on the planet could substantially reduce methane emissions that contribute to climate change too.

Superman Is Jealous: Man (Illegally) Builds Stone Fortress Of Solitude Atop Apartment Complex

danipretto

@craig - how did they not do anything for 8 years?

stone-fortress-apartment-1.jpg Zhang Biqing developed a new Chinese acupuncture program, and got rich in the process. So how did he spend his money? Lotto scratchers? NOPE. Buying the penthouse atop a 26-story apartment building then illegally turning it into a stone fortress. Not gonna lie, I probably would have done something similar.
"I heard the swimming pool has caused floods to downstairs flats a few times; those poor families." Local shopkeepers and security guards suggested bribes had possibly exchanged hands, claiming there were close connections between Mr Zhang and the compound's management, who turned a blind eye to the project. Chinese officials have given Mr Zhang 15 days to vacate the residence in the city's west district of Haidian - but they face a major issue. "The only thing now for us is that we can't find the owner," said the Beijing City Enforcement Bureau's Chen Yu told reporters. "We have issued a lot of summonses, but he never came to us to be investigated."
Ahahahahahhaha, dude added his own f***ing swimming pool to the top of an existing apartment complex! My God, this guy is balling SO HARD. Forget acupuncture, this guy should develop training seminars for aspiring rappers. Hit the jump for a couple more shots.
