all houses matter: the extended cut
oh boy
i’m revisiting this comic that i did two years ago to include common arguments made by opponents of the comic. i have a hard time distilling these thoughts into structures that aren’t analogies, and analogies by their very nature are simplifications. if they do their job right, they at least make the reader consider how another side sees an issue. “okay. i can at least understand why it would be looked at that way, even if i don’t.”
my biggest problem isn’t even people who take issue with the analogy. it’s people who have argued against it via things like fire safety protocols. “actually, it’s a good idea to wet down a house if it’s near a fire. so what’s your point?”
the point is, all lives do matter. but lives in mortal peril need more immediate consideration than those that aren’t. that’s not to say there aren’t different levels of jeopardy in everyone’s lives, all of which need to be addressed. there’s always someone with a worse situation, and we get to decide which one to put our energy into. that’s how it’s always been. yes: all lives matter.
but i have the luxury of getting in my car today, getting pulled over for an expired sticker, and having a reasonable expectation that i’ll only receive a ticket instead of four bullets to the torso.
right now, a lot of people don’t have that luxury. “black lives matter” never meant “only black lives matter.” it means they matter as well. as much as. i am not black. i don’t feel devalued by that assertion in the slightest. why on earth would i?
good luck out there today, friends. and whatever your opinion is, be patient in the comments when voicing it. it’s worth the conversation, and i won’t put a lid on it if it’s done respectfully.

Are You #TeamCho Or #TeamRucka Over Wonder Woman?
You know, on Wednesday, I really thought if there was any controversy over the current Wonder Woman comic by Greg Rucka, Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott, it would have been the suggestion of past girlfriends on Paradise Island – from people who hadn’t read Wonder Woman before. And, gratifyingly, there was none.
Then yesterday, Bleeding Cool ran a statement by Frank Cho over his decision to leave the Wonder Woman variant cover gig only 25% in, over artistic differences with the book’s writer Greg Rucka, and his influence over the creative process. The story was picked up by a number of sites including The Mary Sue, Comics Beat (though deleted, still available here), The Outhouse (twice) and a variety of activist Reddit boards. And was read by more people than any of those silly Marvel Previews leaks from a few days ago.
And it seems to have riven the internet apart, leading people to choose #TeamCho or #TeamRucka.
@ruckawriter Dude, you suck. Frank Cho is a gift and you squandered his talents. #TeamCho

I know I criticise DC for a lot of bad decisions they make, but putting Greg Rucka on Wonder Woman isn't one of them. I stand by Rucka.
— Helena Wayne (@HelenaWayneBlog) July 14, 2016
But what are the arguments? Here are a few prominent discussion points…
Frank Cho is a huge talent, big draw in comics. He crossed the street & put his heart & soul into those covers. Deserved better.
— robertliefeld (@robertliefeld) July 14, 2016
I didn't realize that dudebro-bigots held Frank Cho up as their misogynist/sexist hero/symbol and all the kerfuffle is really about that.
— Son of Baldwin (@SonofBaldwin) July 15, 2016
If you're unhappy about the Frank Cho situation, what you're really saying is you're unhappy with how DC does business.
Go indie. Be happy.

After seeing the variant covers I have a lot questions, namely what is wrong with a thick, muscular Wonder Woman?

Hopefully Frank Cho just transitions over to Harley Quinn covers and stays in the fold. Unless he has split entirely…

UPDATE: And Gail Simone posts on Facebook,
Watching a bunch of geniuses with zero experience working in comics and even less insider knowledge offer their astounding insights into what they are CERTAIN happened between a writer and and artist regarding a cover dispute.
Embarrassing. It’d take an hour to explain how that process goes and it wouldn’t change their brilliant insights anyway. Watching them completely mangle even the scant facts presented so far is both funny and sad.
Here, let me help. I’ve written 400 comics for DC. I know most of the people involved, I have written for that character extensively, and I had many, many disagreements with the direction of covers over the years (very little of it with the artists, I was usually arguing FOR cover concepts editorial didn’t like).
So, I actually DO know this process. And what do I know, what have I gleaned about this story, with that knowledge?
Jack squat. The story so far is one understandably upset artist who feels censored. While the writer is a good friend of mine, and I don’t know the artist personally, this is an unfortunate situation. I’m a fan of this artist (I’m not using names because this is not a singular event). I don’t like to see talented artists put in this position.
But beyond that, it all goes into a black well of details we don’t know. What these self-appointed experts are unaware of is, this stuff happens ALL THE TIME. Covers go past a LOT of eyes before approval. A-list writers are ROUTINELY asked for input on the covers. And a misstep between how a book is meant to be portrayed and the artist’s freedom is common. Beyond that, the writer has not spoken up, and DC WILL NOT speak up. They don’t talk about behind the scenes stuff and that’s good, in my opinion.
I get it, it’s fun to be outraged, and it’s fun to believe whatever narrative fits your belief system.
But if all you know is that one story, you don’t know much of anything. Neither do I.
Let’s all go ahead and make up weird theories, anyway, shall we?
Stephen Colbert Gets In On The Pokemon Go Craze
Late Night host Stephen Colbert has decided to get in on the Pokemon Go craze. After explaining to his audience what the game is and then explaining to players that the exhaustion and sore legs they are dealing with come from something called ‘walking’… he introduces his own creatures that he’s dubbed Trobgobs that will appear during the week while the show airs.
Two of his Trobgobs, from the words trouser goblins, that were show on the episode are Prawnquistador and Gimpapotamus.
Frank Cho Walks Off Wonder Woman After Sixth Cover
Frank Cho, as well as many other A-list comic book artists, was commissioned by DC Comics to create 24 variant covers for the first year of their twice-monthly titles. In Frank’s case, that was for Wonder Woman.
Infamous in the online for his “outrage” sketch covers, both parodying sexism and criticism of sexism, this was a controversial choice, with many expressing their disappointment. But as the first covers emerged, that disappointment went away.
But possibly not with Wonder Woman writer, Greg Rucka. And, as a result, Frank Cho is walking off the title after its sixth issue – and variant cover.
He tells Bleeding Cool,
All the problem lies with Greg Rucka.
EVERYONE loves my Wonder Woman covers and wants me to stay. Greg Rucka is the ONLY one who has any problem with covers. Greg Rucka has been trying to alter and censor my artwork since day one.
Greg Rucka thought my Wonder Woman #3 cover was vulgar and showed too much skin, and has been spearheading censorship, which is baffling since my Wonder Woman image is on model and shows the same amount of skin as the interior art, and it’s a VARIANT COVER and he should have no editorial control over it. (But he does. WTF?!!!)
I tried to play nice, not rock the boat and do my best on the covers, but Greg’s weird political agenda against me and my art has made that job impossible. Wonder Woman was the ONLY reason I came over to DC Comics.
To DC’s credit, especially [Art Director] Mark Chiarello, they have been very accommodating. But they are caught between a rock and a hard place.
I just wanted to be left alone and do my Wonder Woman variant covers in peace. But Greg Rucka is in a hostile power trip and causing unnecessary friction over variant covers.
Greg Rucka declined to comment. The first three Wonder Woman variant covers by Frank Cho are below, in order.

And the initial sketch art of #3…

Blizzard Will Be Changing Overwatch Competitive Play So There Can Only Be One Of Each Hero On A Team
Blizzard have been busy with announcements since yesterday, with the reveal of the first post release character, Pharah’s mum Ana.
However, that isn’t the only thing coming, as the game is getting tweaked. Perhaps the biggest and most immediate one is that you will only be able to have one of each character on a team in competitive mode. This means teams won’t be able to play two Torbjorns or Bastions on defence and the like. That is expected to hit in a patch very soon.
On top of that, it seems in Season 2 of Competitive Play, you can expect to be done away with ties. Talking to GameSpot, principal designer Scott Mercer did acknowledge:
We definitely want players to feel like if they had a tie, their time wasn’t completely wasted
There are also buffs coming to Zenyatta and D.VA to make them more powerful.
There are lots of really cool changes coming to the game, and I can’t wait to see how it changes the ‘meta’. I’m still full speed ahead on Overwatch, and these changes will freshen things up.

James Gunn Claims New Technology Will Prevent Hall H Leaks
While studios love to bring exclusive footage to Comic-Con International: San Diego’s Hall H, the last few years have been marred by special trailers quickly finding their way online. The difficulty in preventing the footage from appearing on YouTube and other video sites led 20th Century Fox to bow out of presenting new material in Hall H this year.
But it’s not stopping Marvel Studios.
As spotted by Comicbook.com, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn told a fan over the weekend that those in Hall H on July 23rd for Marvel’s movie presentation will get a glimpse of the new film. “Or if someone secretly films that,” he added. “Which is less likely to happen because of new technology, but I still know sometimes happens – then you’ll see it right after. If not then, it will be a short while.”
Is it possible the studio, or Comic-Con, have figured out a way to defeat cameraphones? The easiest way would be to just dampen the wifi and other broadcast signals in the hall, but that would lead to many mad fans, bloggers and angry Twitter rants. Or is it now possible to disrupt the images on the screen in such a way that they are not picked up by a cameraphone’s lens?
The again, since Gunn admits people find ways to get the footage out into the wild, it may just be the usual infrared camera brigade looking for a would-be leaker. If it turns out the convention has employed new tech, I’d certainly love to learn about it.
Will The New Ghostbusters Series Be Endless?
Over the weekend, Ghostbusters producer Amy Pascal told The Hollywood Reporter during the film’s premiere that she expects the new film to spark an “endless” series of follow-ups. “People are going to love this movie so much that’s they’re going to demand more and more,” she said.
Of course, that could just be premiere excitement.
Early reviews are out and tend to indicate the biggest worry about the film, its all-female leads, is its biggest strength. Many point out the solid chemistry between Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon as a highlight of the Sony Pictures film reboot. The relationship between McCarthy and Wiig’s character in particular seemed to please many critics.
But even with the solid performances, many reviews also indicated the film is plagued by the same structural and pacing problems that infest many tentpole releases these days. While those issues give American critics and moviegoers pause, they often play well in the often more important overseas venues.
Which begs the question: are the all-female Ghostbusters as contentious in those foreign markets as they are here? If so, it remains to be seen if the new film will garner the international interest necessary for an endless film series.
And for those of us back in the states, it remains to be seen if the symptoms of sequel fatigue — and those loud few still soured by the new film’s casting choices — will hamper its chances for the success required to gain sequels, spinoff and a cinematic universe.
Personally, I hope it does generate at least of a handful of follow-ups. The format allows for new threats to appear without a continuing meta-story and it has an easy way to turn over characters as the series goes on. Maybe they’ll even work out the pacing problems in a subsequent installment. But time, of course, will tell.
Ghostbusters finally hits theaters this Friday.
The Last Remaining Print Of Turkish Star Wars Emerges From Projectionist’s Collection
cyrus.mortazaviIncredible
We need to talk about The Man Who Saves the World.
Better known as Turkish Star Wars — as it was titled at dubious video booths at comic-cons around the US — the film was the brainchild of Turkish actor/writer Cüneyt Arkın, who worked during a time when American films were hard to come by in Turkey. Filmmakers took advantage of the embargo and the audience craving those images by remaking them in a very loose sense and inserting clips of the actual films when they could.
In the case of The Man Who Saves the World, the bulk of the “borrowed” Star Wars footage opens the film as a narrator discusses in breathless detail how mankind enclosed the Earth in a “crust of brain molecules” to defend the planet from its enemies, who in turn “had no brains.” This version of the Earth is represented by shots of the Death Star, which we then see blow up a couple of times as we’re told the planet was destroyed.
But then it got better.
So too will the image quality of the film, long sourced from a grainy bootleg VHS. According to Neon Harbor (via i09), the production company behind Ninja The Mission Force and Deja View, the last remaining 35mm print of the Man Who Saves the World has been found. With the negative presumed lost, this last print was held in the collection of a Turkish projectionist who lied to the distributor in order to keep it. Clearly, a hero with some foresight.
Neon Harbor owner Ed Glaser purchased the print and hopes to “get this one scanned to preserve it for posterity — and hopefully screened in a theater for other fans like me.” The opportunity to see Arkin fight a monster who happens to look like Elmo on the big screen is something like a dream come true.
Granted, The Man Who Saves the World is next-level so-bad-its-good movie watching. Stretches of it are quite dull, but it approaches greatness with strange ideas like a specific whistle to attract skeletons, a hero who needs a second brain and a sword to defeat the villain and an insane opening battle in which the hero sits in front of a television while moments from the real Star Wars unspool behind him.
Glaser also recently interviewed director Çetin İnanç and others involved in the production. So here’s to hoping The Man Who Saves the World gets a special home video release as well.

A New Overwatch Character Is Getting Announced At SDCC
Overwatch has been teasing a new character for quite some time. There have been a lot of speculation as to who is coming and when it will happen.
Well, we now know when we will get a glimpse by way of the SDCC panels being announced. There is one called ‘Behind the Scenes of Overwatch’s Newest Hero‘ and it will take place during convention at an unspecified point.
The expectation is that the character will be a support sniper thanks to recent hints by Blizzard, and some expect it to be the long rumoured Sombra character. We will have to see in just a few weeks.
Game Of Thrones Season 6 Soared Without Books As Source Material
Season 6 spoilers abound!
TV shows and movies that are based on books are always compared to their original source. That is nothing new. Seeing what the movie gets right from the original, and more pertinently, what it gets wrong, will always be a point of huge discussion, especially for those who read the book before engaging in the mass media version of its story. It’s incredibly rare that the new incarnation surpasses the original in quality, and even when a film or series does incredibly well, critically and financially, it is often still plagued with the caveat of “but it is not as good as the book.”
I’ll leave how much of that is fair, and how much of it is “I was there first” up to you, but one of the most fascinating examples of this relationship between a book reborn into a new medium is Game of Thrones. The series has become one of, perhaps even the biggest force in the pop culture lexicon. It is absolutely everywhere in a way few TV series have ever been. This means the show’s relationship with the books has always been a hot topic. The series hasn’t been afraid to emphasize, de-emphasise to outright change portions of the book to fit the new form, often to outright anger of the book fans. Sometimes the changes make sense, and sometimes they are strange and problematic (I’m looking at you Ramsay’s rape of Sansa and the forceful sex Jaime Lannister had with Cersei on the body of their child.)
All told, the series, especially in the last season or two, has been moving further and further away from the books as the show hurtled towards Season 6. It was the first to not have direct source material to work with, simply because the books are massive undertakings and take George R.R. Martin years to write. As stated, that idea of change has been brewing in the last few seasons but ‘broadly’ the show has remained, if not outright faithful, at least respectful of the books.
However, now with the chains off and a week since the season concluded, I have to say I think Season 6, across its entire run was utterly fantastic.
The last few seasons have unsurprisingly played out a lot like their counterpart books. While there is some brilliant character and relationship work done, even the most ardent A Song Of Ice and Fire fans will tell you that things slow down in terms of meaningful plot progression and political manuevering that is so apparent in the first few books. That is all fine in that form, but despite still being good, the TV show has felt like it is spinning its wheels somewhat. That was so apparent in Season 5, where at times, it just felt like we were going through the motions. With Season 6 no longer tied down by fan expectation though, it’s been fast paced, with major changes in more or less every episode. It’s a throw back to what hooked us in the first place; the utter political chaos. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have clearly been having fun with their new found freedom, wasting no time in rearranging the world to their whims and just knocking out meaningful story threads. They have been cutting off characters left right and centre, with utter ruthlessness. Lord Bolton. Dead. Osha. Dead. Hodor. Dead. Balon Greyjoy. Dead. Shaggy Dog. Dead. Margery. Dead. Tommen. Dead. Rickon. Dead. Hell, even my favorite House from the books, Martell, was been utterly altered for the show. The Sand Snakes killed Prince Doran, usurping the position for themselves. It is a massive change, transforming the role of Dorne into something they weren’t in the book, but I am willing to let it go, because it is clearly serving a purpose. On top of the sadness, we also had long promised moments of happiness, like Daenerys crossing to Westeros, two Starks finally meeting again, the Starks taking back Winterfell, Waldur Frey finally getting his comeuppance, the Hound came back. Cersei finally being released of everything that kept her somewhat rational and given the throne. This season was just a lot of gratification, so much so it is even hard to go through everything that happened. It was break neck stuff and I thought it was an absolute joy to witness after having been with these characters for years now. The showrunners are clearly trying to shape this world to their own whims, and the results were fantastic.
Just looking at how the season finished off, with the Battle of the Bastards and the utterly fantastic season finale, the end game is finally in sight. We are no longer treading water and everything feels like it has been imbued with a sense of forward momentum in a very tangible way. With a only a reported 13 episodes left, proceedings have been beautifully alley-ooped with all the pieces in exciting places. All we need is for the dunk to be applied.
While some will complain about how fast and loose the the showrunners are using the lore of Game of Thrones, for me the show has turned into something different. This isn’t at the future expense of the books either, which I think will plough forward with their own narrative that will differ from the show’s. I think that Game of Thrones is absolutely fantastic right now though, because it is no longer a ‘TV show based on the books’. It is just a TV show, a TV show ruthlessly out to reclaim what made it such compelling viewing to begin with.

Game Of Thrones Producers Discuss Plan For Final Seasons
For some time, Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have expressed an interest in producing fewer episodes of the series as it enters its endgame. And it seems they’ll be getting their way.
In an interview with Deadline, Benioff said their plan was always to round out George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire into seventy-to-seventy-five hours of television. “Call it seventy-three for now,” said the producer. “We’re trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end. As Dan [Weiss] said, we’ve known the end for quite some time and we’re hurtling towards it.”
Of course, how the final thirteen (or fifteen) episodes will break down is anyone’s guess. As of now, it is assumed season seven will be seven episodes long with the remainder allocated to the final, presumably chilling, season.
But the fact Benioff said the plan is seventy-three episodes “for now” makes me think they may have some wiggle room yet for the final hours. Or at least I’m hoping that. The show has certainly seen a benefit from the increased pace toward its climax, so maybe two extra hours could be a hindrance.
Game of Thrones returns in 2017.
Oculus Have (Kind Of) Opened Thier Library Up To Vive Users
ReVive is a program that allows the Oculus front page to work on a Vive. When the headsets first launched, it meant game that were Oculus exclusive, could be played on Vive. Despite Oculus founder Palmer Luckey saying he would like the Library to be open to all VR users, that came to a stop when a patch was released by Oculus that blocked the program (and subsequently opened it up to more piracy).
That patch, which checked for an Oculus headset has now been repealed the change, and thus, has basically opened the library back up to Vive users. This was noted by Ars Technica, bringing attention to the change that opens the market.
In terms of how little there is to play on VR headsets right now, it seems mutually beneficial for libraries to be open. Vive and Oculus are in competition, but also need each other for the tech to last. This is a smart move, and I hope it remains like this.
Darth Vader Returns For Rogue One
For some time, many have theorized that Darth Vader would have some part to play in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as the Death Star is so central to the Sith plan for the galaxy. And according to Entertainment Weekly‘s preview of their upcoming print issue, the Dark Lord is indeed back.
They tease a “run-down of his first day on set,” but it is unclear who might be wearing Vader’s costume. They also mention Vader may tussle with Ben Mendelsohn’s “ambitious officer, who’s eager to earn the favor of the Emperor.”
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens on December 16th.

Sharon Stone was part of a feature in AARP which mentioned Sharon Stone’s secret role in an unnamed Marvel film:
Meanwhile, Woodard and Stone are about to become very familiar to the highly sought-after comic-book-film crowd: Woodard’s character is a villain in Marvel’s anticipated Netflix series Luke Cage; Stone has been cast as a superhero — she’ll only reveal that her secret power is heat — in a yet-to-be-named movie, also for Marvel.
Comics Alliance wonders what the secret power of heat may suggest, saying “There aren’t many notable female heroes in the Marvel universe that have the power of heat. There’s Sunpyre, but she’s associated with the X-Men — and she’s Asian. There’s also Nikki, a character that was briefly part of the Guardians of the Galaxy team and had the power to withstand heat and ultraviolet radiation.”
And they return to suspecting Stone will play Janet Van Dyne, against Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym
But there’s a bigger name character that they are forgetting. Firestar.
A mutant character, Den of Geek dismisses her as a result, as being a Fox Studios character.
Who, although a mutant, she first appeared in TV cartoon Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends. And so is either controlled by Marvel Studios or part of the Sony Spider-Man package. And now under Marvel Studios creative control as well.
Could she make an appearance in Spider-Man Homecoming?
Total, mindless, uninformed shot in the dark…

Netflix Clarifies Upcoming Disney Movie Streaming
You might hear rumors swirling around that Netflix will soon be streaming all of the Disney movies you can think of. Unfortunately, that’s not true. When I heard the news, I found it too good to be true. In 2012 Netflix struck a deal with Disney to stream certain classic movies such as Pocahontas and Fox and the Hound. With certain headlines like “Prepare To Freak Out! Netflix Is Going To Stream Every Single Disney Movie” it would be easy to believe that Netflix’s small collection was about to grow a lot. Finding out that wasn’t true was hard for most to accept. However, we do have something great to look forward to.
From September onwards, Netflix will house the latest films from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar. That means that they’ll become available on Netflix shortly after their run in theaters. So, it is sad that we aren’t getting more access to the classic films, but at least we can look forward to seeing new stuff! All in all, this is a step in the right direction for the company, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we gradually see classic Disney movie additions as time goes by. For now, we’ll be waiting for a Disney-filled Fall.
Brie Larson Reportedly In Early Talks To Play Captain Marvel
cyrus.mortazaviNice!
Brie Larson, the Room Oscar winner, is said to be in early talks to play the lead role in Marvel’s Captain Marvel.
Variety reports Larson is the studio’s first choice, but it is unclear where negotiations stand at the moment. As talks are early, it is possible a deal may not be struck, but Larson is also said to be leaning toward playing the role.
Presently, the film is still without a director, with Marvel looking for a women to take the helm as the project represents the first solo outing for a female hero in the studio’s portfolio. And as Variety suggests, casting the part early may indicate she will appear in one of the earlier films in the schedule; not unlike the introductions of Chadwick Boseman‘s Black Panther or Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.
If that is the case, the character could be introduced as early as Spider-Man: Homecoming or as late as Ant-Man & The Wasp, the film currently scheduled to be released just prior to Captain Marvel. Although, many have guessed the character could be introduced in the first part of Avengers: Infinity War.
Captain Marvel is scheduled for release on March 8th, 2019.
