The bar for fine art photographs of dogs in goofy costumes was set quite high in the 70s and 80s by photographer William Wegman and his Weimaraner companions Man Ray and Fay Ray, and while I suspect 20% of the entire industry of the internet is spent sharing adorable pet photos, it’s rare to see a single animal transcend the rest. Some worthy contenders recently have been Theron Humphrey and his dog Maddie, and also Seth Casteel’s underwater dogs. But a new pup has thrown down the gauntlet and her name is Trotter, a one-year-old French Bulldog lovingly captured by her owner, San Francisco photographer Sonya Yu who bills herself as a Professional Food Pornographer. You can follow Trotter’s dressy exploits on Yu’s Instagram feed but also check out her personal work which is outstanding. (via the fluffington post, which apparently, is a thing)

Artist Asbjørn Skou lives and works in Copenhagen where he creates all matter of prints, drawings, and occasionally public light installations. The images above are from a 2010 series called Markeringer where the artist projected a collection etchings at the Sjaeloer railway station. To me it looks almost as is the drawings have been etched into the building’s surface causing the light from the inside to creep through. See much more from this installation here. Carlyle Livingston II and Wayne Hussey (pictured, and looking dapper as hell!) built this giant LEGO Batcave playset WITH THEIR BARE HANDS. Sure it would have been more impressive if they'd only used their mouths, but I bet they were afraid of swallowing pieces. Me? I laugh in the face of choking hazards. No, no I don't. I hate to have two LEGO related posts only separated by a single other article, but you know what they say: when life hands you lemons, you squeeze that shit into a fresh cut and EMBRACE THE PAIN. So officially licensed LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle sets are coming out next year. Related: I will probably be perpetually broke all of 2013. Sydney-based artist Catherine Nelson refers to herself as a painter with a camera, in that she doesn’t see the world as a photographer does but instead uses photos as a medium with which she creates these fantastic miniature worlds. Each work is comprised of hundreds of photographs which she digitally stitches together, drawing from an extensive background in visual special effects having worked on such films as Moulin Rouge, Harry Potter and 300. Of her work Nelson says:

When I embraced the medium of photography, I felt that taking a picture that represented only what was within the frame of the lens wasn’t expressing my personal and inner experience of the world around me. With the eye and training of a painter and with years of experience behind me in film visual effects, I began to take my photos to another level. The ‘Future Memories’ series comprises of 20 floating worlds, meticulously composed with thousands of assembled details. Visual poetry, nature photography and digital techniques blend together to give shape to these transcendental landscapes. The result is a contemporary pictorial mythology that subtly reminds the viewer of a profound truth: that it is in the flourishing variety of the local that the fate of the world resides.

Although the pieces are quite gorgeous to look at right here on Colossal, it’s hard to convey the resolution and scale of each piece which measures about 40×40″ (100x100cm), a level of detail that requires Nelson to spend nearly a month on each piece. It was my assumption based on the perspective and detail that some of these works must be somehow partially rendered in 3D, however she assured me via email that this is not the case. Though she uses digital editing to assemble them, they are almost purely based in photography. Incredible.

Nelson had several pieces on display earlier this month at fotofever in Brussels and will have work later this year at Gallery NOW in Seoul and at CONTEXT in Miami. You can see much more of her work at Galerie Paris-Beijing.

Norwegian conceptual artist Rune Guneriussen (previously) explores a fascinating balance of human culture and nature with his outdoor installations of electric lamps, stacked books, chairs, and phones that appear to have gathered in small herds and swarms as if suddenly sentient. Each work is assembled and photographed on-site without any digital intervention in various rural locations around Norway. Guneriussen just updates his website with nearly two dozen new photos of works over the past three years (the photos are scattered around the site, but it’s well worth the clicking) and also opened a show at Rheingalerie Bonn gallery which runs through November 10. Fotografia noturna é uma tarefa que pode ser mais complexa e difícil do que qualquer pessoa ou fotógrafo amador possa pensar. Na verdade, a fotografia noturna pode provar ser uma tarefa bastante difícil até mesmo para os profissionais mais experientes. No entanto, a recompensa pode ser bastante proveitosa quando executada corretamente.

Para entender como tirar fotos noturnas impressionantes você deve primeiro entender de luz mista. Ao fotografar à noite, muitas vezes podem haver múltiplas fontes de luz. Você  normalmente terá uma fonte constante de luz, como a lua ou uma rua, e também terá iluminação variável de outras fontes, como fogos de artifício, flashes, faróis de carros, e afins. O que faz as boas fotografias noturnas serem impressionantes é a capacidade de encontrar um equilíbrio perfeito entre os dois tipos de iluminação. Este não é alcançado por um equilíbrio 50/50 – muitas vezes você quer lutar por algo mais próximo de uma fonte de luz sendo a metade, ou um quarto do outro.

Uma vez que você tenha atingido o equilíbrio perfeito que você está procurando entre suas fontes de luz, é hora de definir a sua exposição. Dependendo do que o seu ponto focal venha a ser, a sua exposição deve ser colocada em qualquer lugar de 3 a 300 segundos. É aconselhável usar um tripé.

Ao fotografar uma vista geral da cidade você vai encontrar várias fontes de luz diferentes. Fotos da cidade são, muitas vezes, o equilíbrio da cidade e um outro elemento, como o céu, ou um ponto focal de primeiro plano como um rio, montanhas, ou qualquer outra coisa que possa ajudar a adicionar profundidade e textura para o seu disparo. Ou simplesmente adicionar um contraste mais escuro que também ajuda a enquadrar sua foto. O efeito mais desejado em fotos urbanas noturnas é, normalmente, a cor. Para aumentar ao máximo a cor clicada é geralmente necessária uma exposição de cerca de 30 segundos ou menos.

Existem várias outras cenas que compõem fotos fenomenais além de cidades e as luzes da cidade. Estrelas fornecem uma tela excelente para trabalhar, assim como fogos de artifício, fogueiras e lanternas. Esta é a aplicação onde o tempo de exposição pode variar muito, partindo mais rápido que 3 segundos e durando até 300. Quanto mais tempo a sua exposição, mais longo será o seu rastro de luz.

Fogos de artifício fornecem luz e cor excelente para um fundo e podem ser bastante divertidos de capturar. Muitas vezes, uma exposição de 4-12 segundo funciona muito bem para a captura de imagens deslumbrantes à noite. Faíscas e lanternas também podem criar algumas fotos noturnas criativas, você pode escrever o seu nome no ar ou simplesmente acenar sem rumo para captar um efeito irregular legal.

For the past few months Indianapolis-based artist Tasha Lewis has been traveling around the country creating guerrilla installations using a swarms of 400 cyanotype butterflies printed on cotton fabric (cyanotype is a photographic printing process that results in blue images, just like blueprints). Each blue insect is embedded with powerful magnets allowing her to place them on any metallic surface without causing damage, which as far as impermanent street art goes, is brilliant. Of her work she says:

My current body of work was drawn from an investigation into the cultural/scientific/historical context in which the cyanotype was born. Popularized by scientists, and botanists in particular, the cyanotype is intrinsically tied into the scientific recording boom of the late 19th and early 20th century. These are the times of the curiosity cabinet, the prints of Anna Atkins and a rush of explorers/scientists to colonial lands only to bring back specimens from foreign ecosystems. [.. ] The cyanotype is a process of documenting. The resultant image is a kind of scientific stand-in for the actual object in question. It is the trace of the original. In this way, like cyanotype’s use for building blue prints in more recent centuries, my work is formed as the re-presentation of something real; it is somehow not quite the object itself.”
