Harvey-the-Cavalier-King-Charles-Spaniel

Harvey-the-Cavalier-King-Charles-Spaniel puppy
Hello my name is Harvey. I get excited by just about anything, as everything is a new experience. My favorite game is to pull up the grass in my garden, and play with my toys. I have just started my driving lessons with my mum and dad, however they always look worried when I sit in the driver's seat even though i have it all under control. I have also started going to puppy class, and my favorite trick is to lie down as this makes all the ladies swoon. It is a hard life being a little puppy so i love to nap in strange places!

by Annie Rahilly-Melbourne

U. MELBOURNE (AUS) — Young adults just released from prison are much more likely to die compared to the general population.

Nearly all of the deaths were due to drug-related causes or suicide, according to a study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.

In Germany, Zoo Krefeld's Black Rhino couple, Nane and Usoni, gave birth to their fourth baby on July 13. The baby, whose gender is unknown, weighs almost 30 kg, or about 66 pounds. Zoo Krefeld is one of only five zoos in Germany that successfully breed the rare species.

Black Rhinos, also known as hook-lipped Rhinos, are native to central and eastern Africa. They are one of the largest species of Rhinos, with horns reaching nearly 5 feet in length. Despite the name, Black Rhinos generally have light gray or white skin. The species is currently listed as Critically Endangered and are considered to be on the brink of extinction in the wild.

by areshoekiddingme
“The last serious repeal push in Louisiana came in 2003, shortly before the Supreme Court decision, with opponents warning that legalized sodomy would lead to disease and child abuse—two things that, thanks to the sodomy ban, Louisiana had been mercifully free of for the last 207 years.”

- Louisiana sheriffs are still enforcing an unconstitutional ban on sodomy. Don’t expect their governor to do anything about it. (via motherjones)

the whole interview is him trying to defend himself as a scholar because apparently you can’t be a muslim scholar of religion.

This makes me angry

[x]

wtf. why the hell is she asking him those questions. stupid fk. smh.

this dude reads biblical greek

biblical greek

he is more qualified to speak about the bible than most priests

Aren’t Islam, Christianity, and Judaism all part of the Abrahamic religion? I’m pretty sure they’re not as different as Fox News likes to think.

And even if it was vastly different, dude understands Christianity more than actual Christians might and it’s not like we haven’t seen Christians who have no experience studying other religions trying to discuss what that religion is or not.

the thing is

jews and muslims growing up in america are pretty much forced to learn about christianity whether they want to or not

we learn about christian history, the books we read in english are rife with christian references

we may not have gone to CCD but we are still subjegated to learn about christianity if we went through public schooling and it’s not a shot in the dark that most american jews and muslims went to public school

if we don’t know anything about christianity we’re criticized. i remember asking my teacher about the significance of a renaissance painting of a man checking jesus’ wounds because everyone knew the reference in class except for me, and this kid shot back that i should know because the jews killed jesus and how dare i ask a question about not knowing something due to my cultural upbringing.

also back on topic what sucks is that only christian men are apparently allowed to be experts and write books on other religions. how dare people of other religions take an interest in studying other religions when in fact we’re shat on if we don’t know christianity.

it’s a lose-lose situation for us non-christians. damned if we take an interest in learning and discussing christianity, damned if we don’t learn anything about the religion.

I like that in the interview he doesn’t even try to be nice and accommodating about it like it’s an acceptable line of questioning.  He’s civil, he isn’t rude about it, he doesn’t just start yelling that she’s being an islamophobic asshole, but he does make it clear that the whole premise of her questions are ludicrous and offensive.

by areshoekiddingme

neilbailey:

The picture above shows two different representations of exactly the same place. I often wonder what the effects of our widespread and unquestioning adoption of smartphone/GPS technology will have on our spatial reasoning and sense of place. I’ve had friends who have followed GPS directions for hours in the wrong direction, which I found… startling. There’s published research on the topic, as well.

http://m.phys.org/news/2010-11-reliance-gps-hippocampus-function-age.html

That got me thinking about contemporary cartography in general, especially the ‘google maps’ variety. We know that maps show the details their cartographers approve of, which can have profound consequences on our interpretation of ‘place’. This article on map propaganda shows how extreme the bias can be:

http://m.designobserver.com/oblog/post/maps-as-propaganda/37700/

Interestingly, few would call google maps a propaganda tool - but should they?

Batteries get better if graphite ‘likes’ water

by B. Rose Huber-Pittsburgh

U. PITTSBURGH (US) — Materials made from graphite, such as lithium-ion batteries, dislike water—or so researchers have assumed for decades.

But a team of engineers has shown that those materials are actually intrinsically attracted to water, or “hydrophilic.”

To make tiny graphene ribbons, simply add water

by Mike Williams-Rice

RICE (US) — Forming long graphene nanoribbons less than 10 nanometers wide is possible—if water is added into the mix.

Researchers discovered that a bit of water adsorbed from the atmosphere was found to act as a mask in a process that begins with the creation of patterns via lithography and ends with very long, very thin graphene nanoribbons.

4 ways to conserve the middle of nowhere

STANFORD (US) — Some wild places are so isolated that preserving them hasn’t been an issue—until now. Scientists have evaluated a range of ways to protect these remote areas.

Isolated wildernesses such as the Palmyra Atoll, which is now a National Wildlife Refuge, provide precious natural laboratories and hold a powerful allure in the popular consciousness.

U. TORONTO (CAN) — Being physically abused as a child raises a woman’s odds of developing a thyroid disorder by as much as 40 percent.

“We found a significant association with thyroid disorders for women, who were abused during childhood,” says Esme Fuller Thomson, professor of social work at the University of Toronto and lead author of the study that details the findings.

Cut welfare spending to pay for prison reform?

by Amy Hodges-Rice

RICE (US) — Efforts by the US federal government to improve living conditions in state prisons resulted in decreased welfare funding, a new analysis shows.

“When courts are effective in increasing spending on prisoners, the legislature has to increase taxes or cut spending in other programs, given states’ balanced budget requirements,” says Richard Boylan, professor of economics at Rice University.

“As a result, most of these increases in spending come at the expense of welfare spending and/or other social programs.”
