Don’t Usually See Your Kind ‘Round Here

Behold The Platypus. Sleek, slick, and so Prosh. Just like our Furball Friends from earlier today, this Beakasaurus hails from Down Undah. Wouldn’t you LOVE to Snorgle that Belleh? Of course. Silly qwesh.

Gotta be careful sometimes, though- “Let’s just, for a moment, overlook the fact that the Platypus could possibly stab you with a heel spur coated in venom (males in the mating season only.) -Roselyn P.

Know Your Obscure Horse Breeds!

by Not That Mike The Other Mike

Horse aficionados are familiar with the Shetland Pony, affectionately nicknamed the “Sheltie.” Less well-known, however, is the “Shelter” pony, which instinctively stands over smaller animals in snow and rain.

ResQte Of The Week (Rats, It’s Monday Edition)

by Brinke

10900027_699783460139590_1100118574953827145_oThese photos just could NOT wait until the regularly scheduled ResQte Of The Week on Thursday, folks- you can see why. Cuteporter Miia sent these in to us. “A friend forwarded me these photos of a Lonesome Deer Bebeh. Last summer the photographer found the fawn on the side of a road and stopped another driver to ask for help,” she says.

10924653_699783696806233_1870240164682965952_o
“(It was decided) that the mom had crossed the road, but the newborn baby was too weak to follow. Using pieces of tissue paper to protect the deer from icky hoomin smells the helpers carried the deer over the road. By evening the Bebeh was gone – apparently his/her Mom Taxi had finally arrived!”

10929042_699783576806245_1172418667402824583_o
“P.S: The photographer says the fawn looks like s/he’s escaped from a book on fairy tales. I think we can agree, yes?”

Tiny Tapir Makes New Year’s Eve Appearance

by Andrew Bleiman

Tapir3

A tiny new arrival managed to make a big appearance just hours before 2014 drew to a close, at Edinburgh Zoo. A male Malayan Tapir was born to mother, ‘Sayang’, and first time father, ‘Mogli’, in the early hours of December 31st.

Lorna Hughes, Hoofstock Team Leader, said, “The last birth of the year at Edinburgh Zoo, the calf has had a big impact on keepers and visitors already. ‘Mekong’, named after the delta river which flows through where they are found in the wild, is lively and very distinctive.

“Although they are not genetically related and are much larger, Malayan Tapirs are similar in build to pigs, but have noses and upper lips that form a long prehensile snout and large, barrel shaped bodies made for crashing through dense forest vegetation. Adult tapirs are black, with a white or grey midsection, whilst youngsters like Mekong are born with spots and stripes all over their small bodies, face and legs. Mekong’s adult coloration will come in between four and seven months of age. When Mekong is fully grown he is likely to stand at over three feet tall and be up to eight feet in length, weighing up to 900 pounds.”

“Sayang is a great mum with lots of experience as she has had five babies now and really knows the ropes. Tapirs are pregnant for around 13 months so it is great to finally see another healthy calf being born. However, although we are very pleased with his progress and he is putting on weight steadily, the first week or so is a sensitive time for mother and baby.”

This species is the only tapir native to Asia.  In the wild, the Malayan Tapir are under threat from natural predators, as well as hunting and wide-scale deforestation due to farming and logging.  This species are listed as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List, which means that they face a very high risk of extinction in the wild. It is estimated that less than 2,000 individuals make up the wild population.

Luna-the-Staffordshire-Bull-Terrier puppy
Luna loves everyone. If you walk in our door you will be bombarded with kisses and toys will immediately be offered to you for playing. Luna's favorite activities include tug of war with her rope, tossing her green ball, chewing Nylabones, playing with Kongs, and taking a break from city life to run wild and free up at her grandparent's cabin. Luna also oddly loves the water. She loves sprinklers and splashing around in the creek. Luna gets to vacation to the Florida Keys every summer to bark at Iguanas, fetch coconuts, and play on the beach!

Nashville Zoo’s Alpaca Makes out like a ‘Bandit’

Born December 13th, the male, named ‘Bandit’, is the first Alpaca to be born at the Zoo. The baby weighed in at 14 lbs. and stood about two feet tall. Bandit’s thick coat ensures he is all set for the cold weather, and he should be on exhibit throughout winter.

Even before birth, it seems Bandit was well suited for his rebel-style moniker. “Based on the mother’s weight gain, we had predicted the baby would be born in spring, so his arrival on a December Saturday morning was quite a surprise,” said Kacie Cummings, Contact Area Supervisor. “We are thrilled that baby Bandit is healthy and on exhibit with the rest of our Alpacas.”

With the addition of the baby, the Nashville Zoo is home to five Alpacas at Critter Encounters, their interactive area where guests can get up-close experiences with goats, camels, Galapagos tortoises and a variety of birds.

Alpacas are domesticated animals native to South America and a part of the camelid family. They thrive in high elevations and their thick wool coat is used to keep them warm in their native mountainous environment.

Colchester Zoo Welcomes Last Newborn of 2014

by Andrew Bleiman

On December 22, 2014, Colchester Zoo’s Aardvark, ‘Oq’, gave birth to a healthy baby!

The exciting new arrival was the Zoo's last newborn of 2014 and is doing well! Both mom and keepers have a close eye on the baby during these early days.

The Aardvark is a unique animal, only found in Africa. They are almost exclusively nocturnal and love to sleep during the day, curled in a tight circle in their burrow.

Aardvarks, such as Colchester Zoo’s group, have thick skin which is sparsely covered by hairs and varies in color from brownish grey to a pale sand. The newest little one is currently a hairless light grey, but within 12 months, it will be fully grown, just like its mother, and will soon be venturing out of the burrow.

Aardvarks enjoy a diet mainly made up of insects, such as ants and termites. Once fully grown, an adult Aardvark can eat up to 50,000 of insect prey in one night!

The new arrival also joins the Zoo’s two other resident females ‘Puq’ and ‘Skyla’, and its dad ‘Adela’ can be seen at Colchester Zoo’s Aardvark Burrow.

With the latest arrival this group continues to be the most successful breeding group in the UK and one of the most successful groups in Europe.

Hello. My name is Zeus. My mommy and daddy lovingly call me "Lil' Zeus". I have three siblings that I like to play with so I'm never bored. Mommy and Daddy love us all very much! I also like playing in the grass. Well, actually, I like rolling in it and eating it too. I also know what a palm tree tastes like. Everyone I meet thinks I'm just the cutest puppy they have ever seen. When my mommy comes home, she picks me up and hugs me. I like licking her face because I'm so happy to see her!

Hot Fun in the Summertime for Hippo Calf

by Andrew Bleiman

Hippo calf enjoying being hosed_December2014_MT (87)

While it is definitely winter for a lot of us, ‘Kibibi’, the 15 week old Hippo calf, is testimony to the fact that it is summer in Australia. Keepers at Taronga Western Plains Zoo have been treating Kibibi to a cooling hose down in the summer heat, while her mother, ‘Cuddles’, enjoys her morning meal.

“Kibibi really enjoys being hosed down just like her mum. I think the sensation of the water spraying over her is a real treat for her,” said Keeper, Carolene Magner.

“We have been working hard to develop a relationship with Kibibi, just like the one we have with her mother, so that she trusts us. Hosing her down is just one way we are working to build a bond with her as she continues to thrive,” said Carolene.

Kibibi is continuing to grow and develop rapidly. She is now well over double her birth weight and growing in confidence.

“She is becoming more confident and will sometimes stay in the shallow water on her own while Cuddles comes out to feed, but most of the time they are spotted side by side in their pond together,” said Carolene.
