Decisiones políticas, guerras, y familias enfrentadas… ¡Aún mejor que Juego de Tronos!

La piel de toro ha sufrido muchos vaivenes a lo largo de los siglos. Los pueblos que han pasado por sus paisajes han modificado las fronteras a su antojo y han creado una península multicolor, no apta para aquellos más o menos perdidos en Geografía e Historia. Por eso hemos recopilado una quincena de mapas que te explicarán el pasado de España en un vistazo:

1. Edad del Bronce

La península ibérica demostró desde la prehistoria ser rica en minerales. El estaño es uno de ellos, como se puede ver en el mapa superior. Galicia y el norte de Portugal destacan por tener varios de estos yacimientos. Si siguiéramos con los mapas de minerales en España, tendríamos que tener uno para el carbón, otro para el zinc y uno no menos importante para el mercurio.

2. La Alianza de Civilizaciones que pobló la península

Celtas, iberos, vascones, fenicios, tartésicos… En la antigüedad teníamos por estas tierras más pueblos que comunidades autónomas actualmente, y los problemas eran parecidos. Todos ellos nos dejaron joyas arquitectónicas que ahora sirven para potenciar el turismo y mitologías sobre su carácter guerrero y luchador.

3. De Murcia para el mundo

Aníbal, el estratega militar, fue el primero, si no el único, prohombre de lo que ahora es Murcia. Su acción más gloriosa fue cruzar los Alpes llevando elefantes a la tierra de Marco y Raffaella Carrà. No obstante, como demuestra el mapa, su talento conquistador conoció todo el Mediterráneo.

4. Antes todo esto era campo… visigodo

Toledo fue la capital de un reino que dejó aportó bastante a la riqueza cultural de España. Sí, volvemos a hablar de monumentos, pero también de, por ejemplo, vocabulario y legislación: el ‘Liber iudiciorum’ era un muy completo catálogo que recogía la forma de actuar ante un drama judicial.

5. ¡Están locos estos romanos!

De un vistazo vemos que, tarde o temprano, España caería en las garras de los enemigos acérrimos de Astérix y Obélix. César Augusto y compañía conquistaron parte de Europa, Asia y el norte de África, lo que trajo consigo carreteras, el Derecho, el latín y más monumentos para el catálogo.

6. La España del Islam

Tras los romanos, llegaron ellos, que pudieron con todos menos con los férreos vecinos del norte. España no se explicaría sin la influencia árabe; y prueba de ellos son, por ejemplo, los ríos andaluces: Gualdalquivir, Guadiana, Guadalmellato… Todos comparten la raíz ‘uadi’, que en árabe significa ‘cauce’. ¿Lo sabías?

7. Reconquistando, que es gerundio

Pasaron los siglos y, el Sultán de Granada tuvo que abandonar sus preciosos jardines de palacio cuando Isabel, Fernando y compañía se pusieron a batallar. Los cuatro mapas superiores muestran la evolución de las contiendas.

8. El imperio donde nunca se puso el sol (hasta que se puso)

Cuando pienses en la actual situación política y económica de España, acuérdate de que hubo un tiempo en el que habían diversas diversas colonias repartidas por doquier. Claro, intenta obviar que las perdieron a lo largo del siglo XIX.

9. Napoleón también estuvo aquí

Y su hermano, conocido como Pepe Botella. En su afán expansionista, que se puede comprobar en el mapa superior, Napoleón pisó tierras hispanas. El resto de la historia ya lo sabemos: guerra de la Independencia, el levantamiento del 2 de mayo, Fernando VII como rey… Y tanto más!

10. ¿Madrid en Castilla la Nueva y Albacete en Murcia?

La Constitución de 1873, promulgada durante la Primera República, citaba los Estados miembros de la nación federal que se pretendía constituir. Un usuario subió esta insólita aproximación por regiones a Wikipedia, donde también nos encontramos con que… ¡Cantabria desaparece! ¿Qué opinas?

11. ¿Tú eres de Carlos o de Isabel?

El siglo XIX transcurría entre sucesiones de reyes, regencias y cambios entre periodos liberales y absolutistas. España tuvo guerras entre los defensores de uno u otro rey hasta para regalar. Todo dependía de quien se sentara al trono y de qué tan definidos estuvieran los bandos.

12. Mapas para después de una guerra

España pasó siglos inmersa en la Restauración borbónica y el bipartidismo de Cánovas y Sagasta. De la dictadura de Primo de Rivera a la ‘dictablanda’ de Berenguer… Y tras ello, la Segunda República, tristemente rota por la Guerra Civil. El mapa muestra las conquistas de Franco a lo largo de casi tres años de contienda. Las ondas en el mar indican las principales batallas navales y los carros de artillería, las ciudades bombardeadas, sin obviar los campos de refugiados en el sur de Francia.

Desde 1978, España tiene 50 provincias, una demarcación territorial que nació en 1833 y en la que también se incluyeron antiguas colonias como Guinea Ecuatorial o Ifni. Llegaría la descentralización. Segunda República, Guerra Civil, dictadura y, entonces, de regreso a la democracia. Claro, ya no habían virreinatos pero sí autonomías. De momento, España se constituye de 17 comunidades autónomas. No sabemos si en un par de años tendremos que actualizar este mapa.

15. El club de los 28

Un español puede tomar un avión para visitar a su amigo que está de intercambio en Viena, solo con su documento de identidad. Y pagar su cuarto en un hostal en París con la misma moneda con la que pagaba los chicles en el comercio de la esquina. Todo gracias al proyecto paneuropeo por el que un puñado de países comparten el euro y eliminan fronteras.

When a new café opens up in Byron Bay it’s always a bit of a treat for us locals. And even more of a treat when the café has that special feel about it, like you could be at that cool friends house that you wish would invite you over more. Kind of homely, kind of retro, kind of beachy, vintge 50s table and chairs out the front and vegies growing in the garden – they always have some long lost Dylan recond playing… oh and did I mention the food is to die for. You may have seen a few pics flying around insta of the most perfect Strawberry Rosewater smoothies with little red twizzle straws poking out of vintage bottles, yeah well this is where you find them. So was a bit cute-ed out to see one of our fave local kids labels Bandikoot capturing a few moments here with the kidlettes. Divine little angels that they are!! Lovely food and ambiance and little cherub cutie pies all in one place – happy times!

Crujiente, queso, frutillas… Estas bruschettas merecen un aplauso de solo mirarlas. Hazlas para tus amigos y se impresionarán, ya que además de deliciosas, tienen un olor y color maravilloso.

Porciones:  4 a 6 sándwiches pequeños a la plancha

Tiempo de preparación: 15 minutos

Ingredientes:

8 rebanadas delgadas de pan baguette
4 cucharadas de mantequilla
4 frutillas grandes, cortadas (cerca de 1 taza)
Hojas grandes de albahaca, cortada en tiras
1 cucharadita de aceite de oliva extra virgen
½ cucharadita de vinagre balsámico
¼ cucharadita de rallado de cáscara de limón
Sal kosher y pimienta
225 gramos de queso brie

Preparación: 

Unta mantequilla en un lado de cada rebanada de pan, y luego da vuelta el lado con mantequilla hacia abajo. Repite con los otros panes.

Coloca las frutillas picadas en una fuente pequeña, rocía con hojas de albahaca y adereza con aceite de oliva extra virgen y vinagre balsámico. Mezcla gentilmente y cubre con rallado de cáscara de limón. Sazona con sal kosher y pimienta negra molida.

Corta el queso brie en rebanadas y úntalo en el lado del pan que no tiene mantequilla. Con una cuchara cubre con una cantidad generosa de mezcla de frutillas sobre el brie de 4 panes.

Coloca el pan con frutillas, con la mantequilla hacia abajo, en una sartén no adherente sobre fuego medio-alto y cubre con una rebanada de pan con la mantequilla hacia arriba. Tapa la sartén y deja cocinando por 3 a 4 minutos o hasta que esté dorado.

Reduce la llama a intensidad media y dale vuelta al sándwich y cocina por otros 2 a 3 minutos o hasta que el pan tenga un tostado dorado y el queso se haya derretido. El segundo lado se cocinará más rápido que el primero así que ten cuidado. Disfrútalos caliente.

We can mark nearly two months off the calendar since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launched in mid-September, and in that time a plethora of products have come to market faster than a fashion knockoff (with much more undoubtedly on its way). Sadly, most of these “new” accessories are a rehash of the same old products we’ve seen released for previous iterations of the iPhone – countless cheap, plastic cases or gadgets of questionable utility which ultimately end up in the “donate” pile. But hidden amongst the masses, a handful of the latest iPhone 6 compatible designs are genuinely useful, entertaining, constructed with a higher quality of materials, or simply offering a notable execution of design worthy of sitting sidekick to your Cupertino-made mobile:

The Evernote Pfeiffer Collection \\\ $24.95 – 49.95
Evernote’s reputation as a digital workspace and organizing tool on computers, phones, and tablets is well established, if not passionately endorsed like a favorite workout or diet. Now they’ve applied the same organizational tool philosophy from the virtual desktop to IRL with a handsome collection made from walnut, with slots and stands for even the giant iPhone 6 Plus. Is it bad we want to use the slotted cup to hold a giant chocolate chip cookie?

Definitive Technology W7 \\\ $399
The W7 almost looks like it could have been made from the same anodized aluminum slab as Apple’s iPhone, a compact cube of less-is-more, minimalist’s aesthetic (sporting just 4 buttons; everything else is controlled via an iOS app). What isn’t minimal by all means is the surprisingly full bodied sound which emanates from the 5.87” x 6.93” x 6.65” wireless speaker. In our time listening to the W7, the 6 lbs. speaker lived up to Definitive Sound’s claim to be able to reproduce immersive sounds radiating music off walls using the W7′s Tri-Polar configuration of 1″ tweeters and mid/bass radiators situated on three sides, an effect which had us peering over our shoulders fooled by the acoustic trickery, all the while surprised such a compact single speaker could reproduce such a dynamic presence.

CLOT x The Coop Idea 10th Anniversary “Ice Cream Sandwich” Power Bank \\\ $65
Celebrating their 10th anniversary, the Hong Kong-based label CLOT collaborated with The Coop Idea and came up with one tasty looking ice cream sandwich shaped Gummy 9000 Power Bank. The frozen treat offers 9000mAh capacity capable of fully-charging an iPhone three times before it needs to refill back up itself and comes sporting two USB output ports for dual charging at once (note: only one port offers 2.4A fast-charging).

Bowers & Wilkins T7 Bluetooth Speaker \\\ $350
You’ll want to tip your hat off to Bowers & Wilkins. They didn’t jump into the wireless Bluetooth category until they felt good and ready, specifically because they didn’t feel Bluetooth audio lived up to their standards. But now aptX Bluetooth encoded audio is here, B&W decided they could bring both style and audiophile-flavored substance with the T7, a serious looking honeycomb framed portable speaker designed to reproduce bass loud without any of the annoying vibration and distortion which hampers similar devices when pushed. Users can squeeze 18 hours of music from two 50mm drive units and a pair of bass radiators kept in place by the T7′s unique design “Micro Matrix” inner frame.

TAKTIK 360 iPhone 6 Case by Lunatik \\\ $125
Lunatik looks like they set out to make the most rugged and protective iPhone 6 case for adventurers. It also appears their designers were somehow able to keep their protective case from getting hit with the usual ugly stick which usually mars other ultra-rugged adventuring cases; designed with chunky angle, the TAKTIK 360 is a robotic mech-style shell for the iPhone 6. Designed to completely keep out unwelcome water and dust, the TATIK 360 closes up with a patent pending compression closure system and single latch closure, and is covered with a Corning Gorilla Glass lens for an extra layer of screen protection. It’s admittedly a bulky case, but that’s the trade-off for extreme bump and drop protection.

Olloclip 4-in-1 Photo Lens for iPhone 6 \\\ $79
Unlike a DSLR or mirrorless camera, you can’t take off and add additional lenses to your iPhone. But you can slip on the Olloclip 4-in-1 accessory, extending the iPhone’s already pretty good camera with optical quality Fisheye, Macro 10x, Macro 15x, and Wide Angle lenses (photos examples here). Best of all the compact clip-on design makes it extremely easy to attach the extra lenses when needed, then slip the accessory into a pocket or dropped into a bag for storage.

Gramovox Bluetooth Gramophone \\\ $399
Bluetooth, may we introduce you to Boardwalk Empire? This yesterday design, 1920′s-style steel horn speaker is connected for 33ft wireless audio range for iPhone (and Android) devices, good for between 12-18 hours of battery powered playback. If you’re looking for a statement piece, there’s probably not many Bluetooth speakers which will elicit curious inquiries like this.

Aether Cone \\\ $399
The Aether Cone was already a frontrunner in the portable wireless audio speakers category, especially if one appreciates the idea home audio components should look as beautiful as they sound instead of intrusively gadgety. Their team seems committed to improving and updating the Cone, recently upgrading the voice, app, and gesture operated Cone to work sans Rdio subscription (previously mandatory) and an improved web-based set-up which makes connecting the Cone to a home wi-fi network a snap. There’s also a new white and silver color combo, joining the existing handsomely suited black and copper model, making it a match for two out of the three iPhone color options.

Madera Hardwood + Elastamer iPhone 6 Case \\\ $65
With a contrast 3:1 ratio of injection moulded black elastomer to wood, Madera’s iPhone cases share more semblance with a luxurious gentleman’s attache case or billfold than with the typical plastic slip-on iPhone case. And because the wood is only used as a small portion of the case, the grip is remarkably more secure when compared to an all-wood case. You’ll have to sign-up for notification about pre-orders, for these cases were just announced as an upgrade from the previous iPhone 5/5s edition.

The Dimple iPhone 6 Bumper by SQUAIR \\\ $600
Ignore the insane price for a moment ($600!), it shouldn’t detract from an appreciation of the subtle and unique aluminum alloy (specifically, aircraft quality A7075 Extra Super Duralumin) material design which went into this intricate protective bumper. The bumper weighs a mere 17.5g, as lightweight as plastic, yet adds a layer of durability along the most damage-susceptible corners of the iPhone: the corners. A special no-tools required Itoigawa Latch – made from 4 angled parts – permits easy assembly and disassembly, while the bumper’s tidal-inspired pattern lends improved grip to the iPhone 6′s notoriously slippy feel.

Seek Thermal Camera \\\ $199
This Lightning add-on device for the iPhone (with an Android option available) might be the closest you’ll ever get to experiencing the world through the thermal-optical vision of a Predator. The $199 Seek Thermal Cam attaches to the bottom of the iPhone to transform the iPhone’s standard optical capabilities into a temperature sensitive imaging system using a 32,136 thermal pixels, 12-micron sensor. There are countless pragmatic opportunities to use the Seek camera, like finding where cold air is coming into a room or spotting a hiding animal in your backyard, but it’s more likely you’ll find stranger and more amusing opportunities to test a thermal camera, like to share via Instagram or your Facebook feed, no doubt.

Hoy me gustaría compartir con vosotros un ejemplo de reforma tan sencillo como genial. Se trata de un proyecto del arquitecto Sergi Pons y me parece genial para inspirarnos a la hora de “plantar cara” a esas “casas pasilleras” de techos altísimos que suelen abundar en los barrios más antiguos de nuestras ciudades.

Como veréis, la clave de este apartamento ha sido la de vaciar todo el espacio dejando a la vista la base histórica de la vivienda; el muro de piedra (que en muchas otras casas podría ser de ladrillo), las viguetas de madera y sus correspondientes bovedillas. La continuidad de la vivienda sólo se ve interrumpida (y sólo en parte) por el cubo blanco en el que apoya la cocina, que contiene el baño y que, a su vez, dota de intimidad a la zona del dormitorio. La clave está en el cambio de materialidad y color de este cubo (blanco liso contrastando con la calidez y las texturas de la piedra y la madera) y, sobre todo, en que no llega hasta el techo. De esta forma, se sigue leyendo un espacio único pero, a la vez, cada función de la vivienda queda perfectamente definida. También me gusta muchísimo cómo se ha integrado la galería; tan típica también en este tipo de casas. Se ha mantenido su singularidad con el cambio de suelo (en esta zona se mantiene de baldosa hidráulica) pero, a la vez, ilumina y completa perfectamente la zona de dormitorio creando un juego de espacios muy interesante. Sin duda, un ejemplo muy inspirador si en algún momento os planteáis reformar una vivienda de tipología similar. ¡A ver qué os parece a vosotros!

These are interesting days for product design, as companies are experimentally combining different technologies in an effort to create new classes of objects. Yesterday Amazon unexpectedly announced their Echo product design, a cylindrical domestic object that revealed the company is better at keeping things under wraps than Apple.

So what is Echo? The best way I can describe it is Siri in a can, or an iPad for your ears. Apple's tablet enabled us to view the internet without being tethered to a computer, and Echo aims to aurally provide us with information from the internet, with queries made via voice. Have a look at how Amazon imagines the device would fit into our lives:

Like Apple's iDevices before it, Echo consists of already-existing technologies that the designers are hoping will create a desireable functionality by being combined. But I'm not convinced it will succeed. In today's crowded product landscape, new objects succeed by fulfilling an unmet need, and/or possessing such a strong design-based sex appeal that consumers cannot resist buying it.

I'm not sure the Echo has either. The appeal of hands-free is that it lets you achieve something you'd ordinarily do with your hands, when your hands are already occupied; like the example in the video where the housemum is prepping food and asks for a measurement ratio rather than physically looking it up. That example is certainly valid, but it's a question of how often that need truly occurs.

We can’t believe that we missed this one pre-Halloween…but it’s just too dang good to not put out either way. Originally conceived of by Stephen Endersby, a Product Manager over at SolidWorks, this zombie-themed SolidWorks Simulation activity effectively helps you learn the basics of simulation in SolidWorks while testing zombie attack survival strategies.

In this case, Stephen has chosen how to effectively simulate what is needed in order to keep a door from being knocked down during a hostile attack.

“Have you ever wondered what you would do to save yourself from the zombie apocalypse? I know I have,” Stephen says.

“Do you get in a car and drive to the country, stay in your house or jump on a sail boat to wander the seas like the Flying Dutchman?? Actually I can rule the last one out as I can’t sail, so it’s either drive or stay. But what happens if the undead hoard are stumbling over the horizon on the day my car doesn’t start? I need a back-up plan; I need to be safe in my house, I need to know how much wood I need to board up my doors and windows…so let’s fire up SOLIDWORKS.”

Going into the project, Stephen has an accurate theory that no matter the type of zombie–slow like Romero’s Living Dead or fast like World War Z–the biggest problem that a homeowner faces are the doors being broken down. With this in mind, Stephen jumps directly into creating an average and vulnerable front door with a glass window:

He then adds some wood to the window on the exterior side as well as some cross boards on the interior:

“Now I don’t have nails inside of SOLIDWORKS Simulation so I will have to use bolts and set a failure load equivalent of the nail pull out force. Lastly I will need to apply the load on this door due to the mass of zombies pushing against the door. Now theoretically there should be a limit to this load because at some point the mass of zombies would crush the zombies at the front rather than increase the load. After quick scan of the internet I found information on crowd safety barriers and, assuming a healthy safety factor, I now have my zombie crush pressure. As all we are interested is the door we are going to ignore the wall, and assume the door frame is perfectly attached to the house walls. After adding contact between all the components we are ready to run the test.”

“But unfortunately we have some red, which likely equals undead.”

After establishing that he will need more planks of wood to avoid stress near the door handle, Stephen used the patterning tool to add and evenly distribute the wood panels across the entire door:

It’s hard not to appreciate concrete from a manufacturing standpoint regardless of your taste for or against the cool minimalist aesthetic. Between its widespread availability and ability to be formed into literally any cavity, concrete is an excellent medium for the cheap up-front cost of manufacturing with it alone.

Among other designers who have been dabbling with the concrete aesthetic is Bangkok, Thailand-based design studio Studiohole. Headed by industrial designers Kritsanawat Chonchana and Kitikarn Ngamboonsin, the two-person firm have created an impressive lineup of concrete-based products that incorporate electronic components…such as their latest, the Hole CD Player:

The team has also developed a wireless Bluetooth speaker–the JUN Speaker–that shares the same aesthetic to complete your mini-ecosystem…

Consisting of over 15,000 square meters of world-class automobile manufacturing equipment, the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy is one of the most iconic and visited automobile manufacturing facilities in the world.

Having been the location for the famous Ferrari factory since the early 1940s, Enzo Ferrari chose the Northern Italy spot due to complications having to do with bombings during World War II.

Ferrari history buffs will also be quick to note that this same factory also manufactured machine tools while Enzo was sorting out use of the Ferrari name with Alfa Romeo after having left working for the company that first hired him in 1920.

More recently, photographer Luca Locatelli had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and document the factory in its current operational state…which includes churning out over 7,000 highly-engineered units each year.

According to Ferrari:

“This (the factory) is an ongoing project and encompasses everything from the layout of the buildings to the pathways for both people and components alike, the functionality of the various activities carried out, and, most importantly of all, the well-being of the people that do the actual work.”

Because who hasn't dreamed of being able to sleep anywhere, anytime, and look like a superhero doing it, Selk'bag has released this line of $140 wearable superhero sleeping bags. I'm gonna get the Spider Man one because I feel like that's the least ridiculous looking, despite the guy in the picture's best effort to make it seem otherwise. A small house built in the last century on an old village road in the Dutch town of Duiven was recently passed down to the third generation of the family who owns it. Once the new generation took ownership, they decided to renovate the original house and build a contemporary volume on the back. Working with Studio Prototype, the family’s wishes were answered with a new addition that works with the existing home in a project called House W.

The two volumes are slightly skewed helping to add another element of spatial play on the exterior.

The facade is clad in diagonal strips of western red cedar timber laid out in opposite directions. You’ll also notice the diagonal patterns on the window screens that help with privacy.

From the street, the new volume looks to be a closed off block, but around the back, you’ll see that it’s open to the outdoor space.

A large window made up of two sliding doors opens up to the L-shaped veranda out back.

A double height ceiling connects the two floors, making the spaces feel bright and spacious.

A skylight helps bring in maximum daylight.

They brought the idea of the diagonal wood into the interior surrounding the built-in TV.

The connection between the two volumes is pretty seamless.

With the goal of "revolutionizing the watersport industry," Swedish company Radinn has released their first product: an electric powered wakeboard. The carbon fiber craft carries onboard lithium batteries and is controlled via a wireless handheld remote, allowing the rider to cruise at up to 30 miles per hour.

The coolest thing about having a self-propelled board is that it frees the rider from the beach. With an EPW one could navigate rivers, lakes, public fountains in Stockholm...

Want.

The 64-pound board's batteries can provide 30 minutes of runtime. Currently in its final testing stages, it's expected to go on sale next year. And no, it won't be cheap, but if you've got twenty grand to throw around, you could do a lot worse.

The question you’re left pondering upon first being presented with the LUMIX CM1′s design and specs list – with its giant 1″ 20-megapixel sensor and Leica lens – is whether Panasonic has created a devilishly thin digital camera with smartphone capabilities, or whether they’ve crammed a capable Android smartphone with astounding digital photography features? Whichever the case, the Panasonic Lumix CM1 unveiled at Photokina 2014 acknowledges and solidifies the convergence between categories.

Inside the retro-styled body a 1″ MOS sensor similar to those used inside Olympus and Leica’s Four Thirds System cameras is partnered with a manual focus ring 28mm f/2.8 Leica lens. This means the CM1 is capable of capturing 4K video and RAW video files. Despite the Lumix CM1′s camera body shape – complete with a textured synthetic leather back further selling its retro cred –  the unit’s 21mm thickness means a viewfinder was an impossibility (for comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is 8.1mm in thickness).

Instead, a 4.7-inch 1080p screen allows for framing and image review, while Android 4.4 KitKat handles all smartphone features, relying upon the 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor and 2GB of RAM for what should offer sufficiently snappy performance. The CM1 ships with only 16GB of onboard storage (and disappointingly only a modest 2,600mAh battery), but a microSD card slot means storage can be expanded with additional 128GB and switched out whenever needed.

With all good news comes some bad news: Panasonic plans to only release the Lumix CM1 initially in France and Germany in December for an estimated 900 euros (about $1,164), test markets before the possibility this very tempting design arrives stateside some time in 2015.

Tengo una tarde de domingo bastante retrofuturista. Cuando publiqué hace unos días el artículo sobre las granjas de arañas, recuerdo haber encontrado entre viejos papeles un ejercicio de predicción acerca del futuro lejano, ya presente, que transcribo parcialmente a continuación. Sorprende ver cómo se acierta de lleno en algunos asuntos, más que nada teniendo en cuenta que la radio, por ejemplo, acababa de nacer y apenas si existían aparatos en el planeta. Viajemos al futuro-pasado 2007 desde el lejano 1907¹:

Para el año 2007 tendrá Nueva York veintidós millones de habitantes². Sus nombres llenarían tomos y tomos de una guía o directorio de señas, así es que se renunciará a estos. El problema se solucionará de un modo sencillísimo. Por aquel entonces la moneda corriente será el centavo de aluminio³, y bastará echar un décimo de centavo en la ranura de uno de los muchos aparatos telefónicos que habrá y pedir las señas que se deseen para que a los tres minutos se obtenga una tira de papel con la dirección pedida impresa. Lo maravilloso será que esta operación se efectuará desde la central por medio de las ondas hertzianas. (…) Se calcula que por aquella época existirán veintiún modos diferentes de locomoción, siendo el más agradable entre todos ellos el de los buques aéreos movidos por la electricidad, y el más rápido el de los tubos neumáticos⁴.

(…) Por medio centavo se podrá adquirir el último número de cualquier periódico diario, que hará ediciones de hora en hora, tanto de día como de noche, y que se publicará en forma de libro con cubierta de tela y canto dorado. El arte del anuncio habrá progresado de tal suerte que los mejores libros serán sencillamente colecciones de anuncios. Lo más curioso será que después de leído el periódico bastará exponerlo a determinada temperatura para que desaparezca la parte impresa, convirtiéndose en un libro de notas de papel blanco.

A no ser por los relojes, apenas se diferenciará el día de la noche, gracias a una porción de lámaparas eléctricas gigantescas que, suspendidas sobre la ciudad, harán las veces del sol y evitarán el uso de los millones de lámparas incandescentes que hoy gastamos. (…) Toda casa y todo hotel tendrá su cámara frigorífica donde podrá almacenarse de una vez alimento para varios años. (…) Existirán cocinas públicas desde las que se servirá a los abonados la comida por medio de tubos neumáticos.

Por medio de aparatitos portátiles todo el mundo podrá establecer comunicación a cualquier distancia, y no habrá persona que no lleve en el bolsillo su correspondiente “fono” para cuyo funcionamiento se aprovecharán hasta las vibraciones más sutiles del éter. Por encima pasarán las veloces máquinas voladoras, rápida y silenciosamente (…) existirán buques que harán los viajes con perfecta seguridad a razón de unos 1.000 kilómetros por hora. Con semejante velocidad y calculando en 6.000 kilómetros, en números redondos, la distancia que media entre Francia y Nueva York, será posible desayunar en este último punto a las siete de la mañana y cenar en Francia a las seis de la tarde.
