20 Covers Of Radiohead’s “Creep,” Rated

by Stereogum

In the never-ending curious case of Radiohead, you have a slew of their most iconic songs out there — beloved, covered, cited. Songs that have little to nothing to do with them now, whether they’re off The Bends or even something like “No Surprises.” First and foremost of those, of course, is “Creep,” from their 1993 debut Pablo Honey, AKA the Radiohead Album That Never Actually Happened. Much like Blur’s Leisure, Radiohead was a band that began with derivative, comparatively uninspiring music that would evolve into something much grander, much more exciting, much better. Unlike Blur, Radiohead released “Creep,” a song whose shadow would linger throughout their career, despite the fact that by now they’ve distanced themselves very far from Pablo Honey, both musically and in the their ethos. (Some people still go to Radiohead shows expecting to hear it which, at this point, is simply confounding.)

Newswire: Nick Offerman wanted for the next season of Fargo

by Sean O'Neal

Fargo’s second season will once again explore criminal acts amid the tangled, wintry backwoods of Minnesota. So who better to seek out for a role than Nick Offerman, a man who can chop those backwoods down and make those crimes far easier to solve, while also fashioning some nice canoes? The Wrap reports that an offer is out to Offerman to join the FX series in the role of “Carl,” though besides that being a perfectly fine character name for a man of such roughhewn, Carl-esque stock, little else is known right now. It’s also important to note that Offerman isn’t currently in negotiations, presumably waiting to see whether the Internet demonstrates any interest in his joining another cult series.

In the meantime, Fargo has nearly sealed a deal with Jeffrey Donovan, who will be following up his final season run on Burn Notice by donning his ...

‘Terminator Genisys’ Trailer: “Everything’s Changed!”

by Peter Sciretta
Corey

I hate the name and the lead actor, but am such a big fan of Arnold's I will give it a shot.

Terminator Genisys Trailer

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Alan Taylor‘s Terminator: Genisys, which acts as a reboot of the Terminator series, and a sequel to the existing films, and possibly the first film in a new trilogy. Watch the Terminator Genisys trailer embedded after the jump.

After you watch the Terminator Genisys teaser trailer, please check out our Terminator Genisys photo post where we over analyze the trailer shot by shot, providing insight, backstory and even side by side comparisons from James Cameron’s original film The Terminator.

werewr

The trailer begins in future 2029, and we get a look at post apocalyptic Los Angeles intercut with Jason Clarke as John Connor giving an inspiring speech to his group of resistant fighters staring at an end of the world scenario. John Conner’s second in command, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney), offers to go back in time to protect John’s mother Sarah Conner from Terminators sent back by Skynet. This all isn’t much different than the beginning of James Cameron‘s original 1984 film The Terminator, albeit this retelling has much bigger special effects.

But once back in time in the year 1984, things get… different.

First we see a T-1000, then Sarah Connor (played this time by Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke) makes the save, giving a delivery of the popular franchise catchphrase “some with me if you want to live!” And then the realization that the T-800 from the original Terminator has already been destroyed, thanks to an older looking T-800 (again played by Arnold Schwarzenegger). What has happened to cause this divergent timeline?

Its hard to get super excited about a franchise which has disappointed many people the last couple times at bat, but as a time travel fanatic, I really dig the whole idea of the divergent timeline and everything we’ve already experienced being different yet familiar. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Great Job, Internet!: Hark! It’s DJ Earworm’s annual United States Of Pop mashup

by Alex McCown
Corey

I enjoy these every year.

Gather ’round the yule log, everyone: it’s the end of the year, and that means it’s time to open our annual present from DJ Earworm, a.k.a. Jordan Roseman. For the past seven straight Decembers now, Roseman has released his United States Of Pop mashup, a sort of musical embodiment of What We Listened To This Calendar Year. It’s made up of the top 25 pop hits of the year, threading together the disparate styles, themes, and melodies into a remarkably cohesive (and addictive) whole.

For his eighth release, there’s a noticeable shift in pace. All the usual suspects are here—Taylor, Nicki, Katy—joined by 2014 newbies like Meghan Trainor, Iggy Azalea, and Jessie J. However, as Roseman himself tells Billboard, there’s definitely a slower, more deliberate vibe to this year’s compilation. “The thing that has been most notable in the past ...

35 Year-Old Art Director Confesses To Being Spider-Man In His Obituary

by Dan Wickline

Buzzfeed picked up on this very unique obituary that ran in the Star Tribune. Aaron Joseph Purmort, a 35 year-old art director, died after a several year battle with cancer.  Prior to his passing, Purmort, a long-time comic fan, wrote his own obituary where he revealed that his cancer came from a radioactive spider bite and he called upon his son to avenge his untimely death.

Purmort, Aaron Joseph age 35, died peacefully at home on November 25 after complications from a radioactive spider bite that led to years of crime-fighting and a years long battle with a nefarious criminal named Cancer, who has plagued our society for far too long. Civilians will recognize him best as Spider-Man, and thank him for his many years of service protecting our city. His family knew him only as a kind and mild-mannered Art Director, a designer of websites and t-shirts, and concert posters who always had the right cardigan and the right thing to say (even if it was wildly inappropriate). Aaron was known for his long, entertaining stories, which he loved to repeat often. In high school, he was in the band The Asparagus Children, which reached critical acclaim in the northern suburbs. As an adult, he graduated from the College of Visual Arts (which also died an untimely death recently) and worked in several agencies around Minneapolis, settling in as an Interactive Associate Creative Director at Colle + McVoy. Aaron was a comic book aficionado, a pop-culture encyclopedia and always the most fun person at any party. He is survived by his parents Bill and Kim Kuhlmeyer, father Mark Purmort (Patricia, Autumn, Aly), sisters Erika and Nicole, first wife Gwen Stefani, current wife Nora and their son Ralph, who will grow up to avenge his father’s untimely death. A service will be held on December 3, 2014 at Shelter Studios, 721 Harding St. NE, Mpls 55413 at 6 pm.

His wife, Nora, stated in her blog:

Before [he] died, we had time to sit down and write his obituary. I’ve never laughed and cried more in one sitting, but I’m so glad we got to do this. I love this man so damn much.

An on-line fund raiser was put together by Purmort’s sister-in-law to help cover the medical expenses, funeral costs and to provide for his son Ralph. The initial amount set was $100,000 but the site has raised over $106,000 so far.

‘Search Party’ International Trailer Is a Mini ‘Silicon Valley’ Reunion

by Angie Han

Search Party

Silicon Valley isn’t coming back for another several months, but in the meantime you can check in with two of the stars right here in the Search Party international trailer. Thomas Middleditch plays Nardo, a groom whose wedding day is ruined, and T.J. Miller plays Jason, the guy who ruins it.

Jason also happens to be Nardo’s best friend, however, and when Nardo winds up naked and alone in Mexico it’s up to Jason and their other pal Evan (Adam Pally) to rescue him. Watch the Search Party international trailer after the jump.

The Search Party international trailer seems intended for the French market, but the characters are all speaking English so it’s okay.

[via Collider]

Search Party is the directorial debut of writer/producer Scot Armstrong, and it shares the same themes and comic sensibilities we’ve seen in his scripts including The Hangover Part II, Semi-Pro, Old School, Road Trip. It’s also got a very funny cast. In addition to the central trio of Pally, Middleditch, and Miller, it also features Krysten Ritter, Alison Brie, and Jason Mantzoukas.

Whether it all coalesces into something good remains to be seen. The first trailer isn’t terribly memorable, but hopefully we’ll get another, better look at the movie before long. Search Party was supposed to be released September 12, 2014 by Universal, but was quietly yanked off the calendar and has yet to be rescheduled.

24 hours ago, Nardo (Thomas Middleditch) was standing at the altar next to the love of his life. Now he’s shivering in just a pair of gold leggings in the Mexican desert, and the only men who can save him are his best friends (TJ Miller, Adam Pally). Writer Scot Armstrong (Road Trip, Old School and The Hangover: Part II) makes his directorial debut in a comedy that follows a rescue by the guys you call when you’ve run out of all other options.

First Footage From ‘Terminator Genisys’ Teases Big Things for the Franchise

by Germain Lussier

Terminator Genisys footage

Thursday brings the first trailer for Alan Taylor‘s Terminator Genisys, a film many are hoping launches a whole new era in the Terminator franchise. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as the iconic T-800 but all the rest of the characters – Sarah Connor, John Connor, Kyle Reese etc. – have been recast in a movie that, rumor has it, takes place in a parallel time line to the original film series.

In advance of that trailer, Paramount has releases a 15-second teaser for the trailer. Usually, these suck, but this one not only provides our first actual look at footage from the July a release, but also some incredibly tantalizing shots for any fan of the Terminator series. Check out the first Terminator Genisys footage below.

Here’s the Terminator Genisys tease.

First Terminator Genisys Footage

First up, we see a T-1000 and it looks very much like Robert Patrick. Not exactly, but very close. Next we see a bunch of people surrounding a large machine that has similar lightning to the time travel apparatus we’ve seen in the other movies. Odds are, this is our first glimpse at what that apparatus – so crucial to the franchise –  looks like. Then we see missiles flying all over the surface of the globe. This, of course, looks like Judgement Day. The day the machines finally got self aware and attacked the humans. And then, finally, it’s Schwarzenegger with his human tissue removed revealing that unforgettable endo-skeleton arm.

How do all of these things add up? We’ll hopefully be able to figure it out Thursday when we see the first trailer for Terminator Genisys.

Terminator Genisys opens July 1, 2015 and is directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World). It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator from the first three films, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, Jason Clarke as John Connor, JK Simmons as some kind of cop and Matt Smith and Byung-Hun Lee in mystery roles.

Amazon Fire TV Stick Review: A Lot Less Money for a Little Less Speed

The Amazon Fire TV Stick is the bargain version of Amazon's super-fast voice search-enabled Fire TV. The HDMI version certainly sacrifices a lot of things that make Fire TV great, but is that bargain worth it? Absolutely.

Chris Pratt Is A ‘Cowboy Ninja Viking’ [UPDATED]

by Angie Han
Corey

Love Cowboy Ninja Viking.

Jurassic World Wrap Photo

Thought the Guardians of the Galaxy were an odd bunch? Chris Pratt‘s next comic book adaptation could be even weirder. He’s reportedly attached to lead Universal’s Cowboy Ninja Viking, about an assassin whose multiple personality disorder gives him the attributes of three warrior archetypes: the cowboy, the ninja, and the viking.

Hit the jump for more on the possible Chris Pratt Cowboy Ninja Viking casting.

UPDATE: Pratt confirmed he’s in the movie on Twitter:

@jbkelly80: @prattprattpratt pic.twitter.com/lNR1NYxT56” YES! But who is our director? That is the question. Who do u think it should be?

— chris pratt (@prattprattpratt) November 20, 2014

Collider reports Pratt would be playing Duncan, the protagonist of Cowboy Viking Ninja. Duncan is part of an experimental government program that transforms multiple personality disorder patients into “triplets” — lethal operatives with three distinct personas, each with his or her own set of skills. He eventually escapes and tries to track down the billionaire behind the program.

According to Collider, the latest draft of the script has the Cowboy, the Ninja, and the Viking played by three different people, though all of them look like Duncan (that is, Pratt) to onlookers. But that’s the kind of detail that could still change as the film continues to develop.

Cowboy Ninja Viking has been in the works for a few years already. The first issue of A.J. Lieberman and Riley Rossmo‘s comic was published in 2009, and Zombieland scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese began working on the screenplay adaptation in 2010. Originally the project was set up at Disney, but the studio eventually deemed it too edgy so Universal scooped it up. Marc Forster was set to direct in 2012 but has since dropped out.

As of now, Cowboy Ninja Viking has no director. But getting a big star like Pratt on board is definitely a big step forward, and he does seem like the perfect fit for the job. He has the right kind of charisma to sell this bizarre premise, and he can move between comedy, drama, and action without missing a beat. Really, the very phrase “Cowboy Ninja Viking” sounds like Andy Dwyer’s dream job. Or maybe even Star-Lord’s.

Pratt had a huge 2014 thanks to the one-two punch of The Lego Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy, and is only slated to get bigger next year with Jurassic World. Additionally, he’ll reprise his role as Andy Dwyer for one last season of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, which premieres off early next year. But since Jurassic World is already done shooting and Parks and Recreation only has a few episodes left to film, Pratt’s schedule is actually pretty open right now.
