Nintendo 64 Control Pad Stick Replacements Hit Kickstarter

by no-reply@retrocollect.com (Cauterize)

Enkko-N64-Analog-Stick-KickstarterAlthough a fantastic controller in its own right, the Nintendo 64 control pad often falls victim to overuse. Whether it be down to the excessive force applied during Mario Party sessions, or wear and tear through Goldenye 007 tournaments, the analog stick can occasionally come loose and lose its responsiveness. Before you cast any of these defected pads away, take note of this Kickstarter campaign which aims to offer a solution.

Star Wars Lands Concept Art Reveal Plans for Theme Parks

by Dan Auty

One of the most exciting developments to have resulted from Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012 was the announcement of two Star Wars-themed "lands" that are planned for the company's marquee parks in California and Florida. New concept art for these parks has been released--check it out in the gallery below, via slashfilm:

The art was revealed during ABC's The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland at 60 TV special. Presented by Harrison Ford, the images display some of the different areas that fans might visit when the parks open, including a cantina, Imperial docking bay, street market, and a Rebel base.

At Disney's D23 expo in August last year, Disney chief executive Bob Iger explained that the Star Wars lands would be spread across 13 acres each and would be the "largest single-themed land expansions ever."

In December it was reported that a significant part of Disneyland in Anaheim, California, would be shutting down imminently to make way for the construction of the Star Wars park. There is currently no date for when the parks will open.

Halo 5's touching tribute to player who lost his teenager daughters in a house fire

In January 2016 Halo player Adam Bartels - aka thecrzedspartan - lost his two teenage daughters, Trinity, 15, and Lena, 12, in an electrical fire at the family home in Wauzeka, a village in Wisconsin, United States.

After the tragedy was brought to the attention of r/Halo, developer 343 created the Spartans Never Walk Alone pack in honour of Adam's family and his daughters.

This pack contains the True Light emblem, which is named after the first initial of each of Adam's daughter's names. It's the first animated emblem to come to Halo 5. All players receive the pack as part of this month's free update.

Fire Emblem Fates Reviews

by Peter Brown

Fire Emblem Fates is composed of three games that each have individual stories, gameplay, and price tags. Unless you preordered the $80 special edition in November, you have to start with either Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright, or Conquest, for $40. After choosing one, you can purchase the other two games as DLC for $20 each. Don’t be fooled by Revelations just because it’s only available as a download: it’s as big as the two mainline games.

It's important to understand the differences between each game, so we have reviewed each version of Fates to help you decide whether any edition is right for you. We've posted excerpts from each review below, but to get the full picture--and understand why each game got a different score--be sure to look at the full reviews for more detailed insight and analysis.

Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright - 8/10

Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright Review, Alexa Ray Corriea - "Birthright--one in a trio of Fire Emblem Fates titles--continues the series' time-tested spin on strategy role-playing games. But is also adds a new layer to interactions between characters that makes things intimate--steamy, even. Mechanically, Birthright is more forgiving than its sister titles Conquest and Revelations, offering players easier access to resources and units as well as more opportunities to grind out experience. As for the narrative, there are some awkward moments and cheap drama that pull you out of the moment, but these are brief and overshadowed by a handful of powerful scenes. Even the melodrama can't keep Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright from being worthy experience."

Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest - 7/10

Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest Review, Peter Brown - "Conquest's demanding challenges force you to work hard as a strategist and a matchmaker, but it never lets you revel in either on your own terms. I do appreciate how hard combat is, and I get a lot out of the relationship building opportunities that arise, but I desperately wanted more time with my army, on and off the battlefield. Every version of Fates has 28 chapters, but Birthright and Revelations give you the chance to go on scouting missions, where you can give the plot a break to train and get to know your soldiers on a more personal level. No such option exists in Conquest."

Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation - 9/10

Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation Review, Alexa Ray Corriea - "Of all three Fire Emblem Fates titles, Revelation is the most rewarding. It marries the best parts of sister titles Birthright and Conquest, offering varying maps with complex and often interactive terrain, as well as ample opportunities to grind for experience and build relationships between members of its warrings kingdoms. Whether you're carefully maneuvering your troops to make the best use of floating platforms to rout the enemy, or pairing up the heir to the Hoshido throne with the eldest princess of Nohr and praying they birth an amazing child, there is a lot of love in nearly every facet of its design."

Nintendo Account Registration Now Live Worldwide

by Carter Dotson

The first step of Nintendo's mobile future has come to fruition. Nintendo Accounts are now live for registration in English and worldwide. Just visit the Nintendo Accounts site, and you can sign up for your Nintendo Account, which will be used in Nintendo's mobile games along with titles on 3DS, Wii U, and future Nintendo systems. The usernames are limited to 10 characters, as it wouldn't be a Nintendo feature without some odd and unnecessary restriction. So, y'all with 11+ character usernames? Find some way to shorten them or get a new name.

Nintendo Account Creation

This is a big step in Nintendo's future because this will power their upcoming mobile games, and we're hearing that Miitomo pre-registration should open soon. So having this account now is a good idea for when Nintendo's future titles do launch. Stay on alert – there's the potential for a lot of big news to be dropping from Nintendo soon.

'Miitomo' Preregistration Now Live, Releases in March

by Carter Dotson

Preregistration for Miitomo is now open, and in multiple languages, including English. Nintendo Account registration opened up a few hours before preregistration for Miitomo opened up, and if you signed up already, then it's just a couple of clicks to sign up. Nintendo also revealed that the currency you'll earn is called My Nintendo Platinum Points, with points awarded for preregistration and redeemable for rewards through My Nintendo, which launches with Miitomo. Those preregistration points will expire after 6 months, though. Still, we can hope for some cool prizes.

Miitomo Preregistration

The other news is that Nintendo says that Miitomo will go live in March, and the game is described as "free to start." It's not even really described as a game by Nintendo, just as a "smart-device app" but any move by Nintendo to mobile is worthy of note. The website shows off some of the features of the app in English, so you can see more of the game for yourself on the official site.

Quentin Tarantino on How His Movies Share the Same Universe

by Dan Auty

Movie universes are very much the popular thing in Hollywood right now. From Marvel and DC to Harry Potter and in-development worlds of Transformers and The Fast and the Furious, connecting your movies is a sure-fire way to keep a franchise alive and keep the dollars rolling in. Now Quentin Tarantino has revealed that most of his movies are part of the same universe too, despite the number of genres and time periods they span.

In an interview with Australian news show The Project, the Hateful Eight director explained that within his movies, there were actually two existing worlds--the "real" and the "realer than real."

"There is actually two separate universes," he said. "There is the realer than real universe, and all the characters inhabit that one. But then there's this movie universe. So From Dusk Till Dawn, Kill Bill, they all take place in this special movie universe. So when all the characters of Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, when they go to the movies, Kill Bill is what they go to see. From Dusk Till Dawn is what they see."

Tarantino has often hinted about the relationships between characters in his work, without making it explicit. For example, Pulp Fiction's Vincent Vega and Reservoir Dogs' Vic Vega clearly share the same name, as do Lee Donowitz from True Romance and Donny "The Bear Jew" Donowitz in Inglourious Basterds.

Similarly, True Romance's Alabama is mentioned in Reservoir Dogs, and most recently Tim Roth's Hateful Eight character Pete Hicox is very possibly related to Michael Fassbender's Lt. Archie Hicox from Inglourious Basterds.

$400 Fallout 4 Power Armor Figure Stands 14 Inches Tall

by Mat Paget

No, it's not Power Armor that you can put on and wear. It's actually an action figure of sorts that features the male version of Fallout 4's protagonist in Power Armor. And now, details have come out on how to preorder one for yourself.

The 1/6th scale Fallout 4 T-45 Power Armor Collectible Figure is made by Threezero and will be available to preorder starting January 27 at 5 PM PST. No shipping date has been confirmed. We've posted some pictures above, but you can see the rest on the toy manufacturer's Facebook page.

The figure stands at 14.5" tall and has over 35 points of articulation. Its fingers can be moved to hold the packed-in AER-9 Laser Rifle--buying it online also gets you a Minigun. Additionally, it comes with an exchangeable head and helmet, so you can choose to show the sole survivor's face. The helmet features an LED light.

The Power Armor pieces are detachable, so you can strip it down completely or use other upcoming armor sets to mix and match.

If you want this figure for yourself, you can preorder it at Threezero's website on January 27. The online version with the Minigun costs $398, while the retail version will cost $380.

In related news, one player recreated BioShock Infinite's Columbia in Fallout 4, while another created a mod that lets you play around in the Capital Wasteland in all four seasons. And if you're longing for another Obsidian-developed Fallout game, you might be interested to hear the New Vegas developer is interested in making another entry in the series.

Unravel Review Roundup

by Eddie Makuch

Ahead of Unravel's release tomorrow, reviews for the adorable-looking indie game published by Electronic Arts have now started to show up. Developed by Coldwood Interactive, a small team in Sweden, the game sees you controlling Yarny, an anthropomorphic character made of yarn.

But how is the game holding up with critics? We've now rounded up some scores and editor opinions about the downloadable game to help you get an idea if it's worth your time and money.

For more on Unravel's critical reception, you can also visit GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

Additionally, Xbox One and PC owners with an EA/Origin Access membership can play the game's first two levels free for 10 hours.

  • Game: Unravel
  • Developer: Coldwood Interactive
  • Platform: PS4, PC, Xbox One
  • Release Date: February 9
  • Price: $20

GameSpot -- 7/10

"Unravel's wonderful sights and sounds won't escape your own memory so soon. But assessed purely on gameplay, it's everything I tend to fear about indie projects; Beautiful, heartfelt, but like Yarny himself, not robust enough." - Rob Crossley [Full review]

IGN -- 8.3/10

"Unravel took me on a surprisingly thoughtful and reflective journey, which encouraged me to appreciate the small and the insignificant with every step. As a puzzler it has charm due to Yarny's engaging skills, but as a platforming experience it’s less remarkable. But to judge it solely on these mechanical aspects would be to overlook its greater achievement: the way it provokes subtle and complex emotions through the use of nature and nostalgia. It all makes for a sincere, warm-hearted, and extremely likeable adventure." - Daniel Krupa [Full story]

Game Informer -- 7.75/10

"With just a dozen levels, Unravel's brief six-hour runtime still proves too long for the basic puzzle mechanics. However, the satisfying platforming, thoughtful story, and adorable protagonist make it a worthwhile journey. I grew tired of repeating the same puzzle solutions, but seeing Unravel through to the end was still a treat." - Jeff Marchiafava [Full review]

Destructoid -- 10/10

"Unravel cherishes the best moments in life while recognizing the hard battles we sometimes face as families, all wrapped up within delightful gameplay and stunning scenery. The atmosphere is so compelling that I couldn't help but feel like a piece of my own story was wrapped up in the game with the rest of the photo album. It's rare but a special thing when a game manages to impart a story that touches strings deep in the heart, and Unravel manages to meet and exceed this feat. Get ready to have all the feels." - Caitlin Cooke [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 4.5/5

"There's a bittersweet edge from the get go but Yarny's adventure continues, Journey-like in a way that'll gnaw away at the soul you've hidden carefully away. Compared to the cold sterility of a puzzler like The Witness, Unravel is where all the heart lives, and there's nothing our futile cynicism can do about it. Ironically, this is a also game that--with its beautiful recreation of the natural world--might just drive you to pop down the controller once it's over and go outside and make some of those moments for yourself." - Louise Blain [Full review]

Hardcore Gamer -- 4.5/5

"Exploring themes like love, environment, family and loss, Unravel has the potential to be an emotional undertaking for the player. It's an experience that was quite intense for this particular reviewer. It is a wondrously constructed game born of love and culminating as an incredibly, beautifully bittersweet, emotional adventure. Filled with heart from its opening to the cessation of the credits, it will wow you, make you smile, and make you cry. Gamer or not, you need to play Unravel." - Luke George [Full review]

A New Cartridge-Based Console Is Coming Out Next Year

by Eddie Makuch

Classic gaming company Coleco is making a comeback, albeit in name only. The company that now owns the rights to the classic company's name has announced a partnership with Retro Video Game Systems for a cartridge-based console it's calling Coleco Chameleon.

It's described as a "versatile new video game system that serves as a modern day take on the classic game console." It can play 8-, 16-, and 32-bit games, which Coleco Holdings says is a "growing and popular genre."

Retro Video Game Systems previously attempted to launch this system as the Retro VGS with a crowdfunding campaign that didn't pan out. This rebranded version of the system still plays cartridge games, making it the first console in about two decades to do that. It also uses the original manufacturing molds for the Atari Jaguar, which the company acquired the rights to earlier this year.

In a statement, Retro Video Game Systems president Mike Kennedy said the console "is a love-letter to all the classic cartridge based gaming systems that came before it."

"It will take gamers and their families back to a simpler time where games were all about great gameplay and fun factor," he added. The original ColecoVision console was released in 1982.

Pricing was not announced. But writing on Twitter, developers said "it will be significantly more affordable than the first go-around," referencing the aforementioned failed crowdfunding campaign for the Retro VGS.

The Coleco Chameleon will be available to buy in early 2016 and will be on display at the Toy Fair New York in February. You can learn more about the console on its website.
