Fox Opens Door for More Firefly

by Shane McGlaun

Well, Gorram! It looks like Fox is open to bringing Firefly back to the small screen. If you are a fan of the franchise, you are probably super excited right now. Fox President of Entertainment David Madden said during a recent Rotten Tomatoes interview that the network is open to more Firefly.

There is a big caveat though; Joss Whedon has to be the showrunner. I mean this makes all kinds of sense right now. There are still lots of fans, and Nathan Fillion isn’t playing Castle any more. That last bit was a big monkey wrench in the works before.

I think the only real characters that cannot be replaced are Jayne and Mal. Most of the others could leave without much issue in my book. I hope the series comes back. There is way too little quality sci-fi on TV today.

Ranking Every Game In The Legend Of Zelda Series

by Brian Shea

The Legend of Zelda franchise is among the most revered in gaming. Year after year, generation after generation, Nintendo's crack team of developers release consistently great entries that are almost always Game of the Year contenders. With the latest entry in the series, Breath of the Wild, right around the corner, we're looking back at the core games to this point and ranking them.

Our Top 200 Games of All Time

In our December 2009 issue, we ranked the top 200 games of all time. As you can imagine, several entries from The Legend of Zelda series appeared throughout that list. That list had different criteria than this one, but you below you can see how Link's adventures stood up to the rest of the list on our list of the top 200 games of all time in 2009.

1. The Legend of Zelda
12. A Link to the Past
20. Ocarina of Time
61. Link's Awakening
63. Majora's Mask
90. Twilight Princess
94. The Wind Waker

For the purpose of remaining focused on the core entries of The Legend of Zelda franchise, several spin-offs and obscure titles are omitted. Titles like Hyrule Warriors, Link's Crossbow Training, and the CD-i games are left off. Even with those missing, we still have nearly 20 games where Link battles the forces of evil to save Zelda, Hyrule, or whatever equivalent exists in that respective game.

Despite the large number of releases over the course of over three decades, the Zelda franchise has yet to strike out. Even the lowest ranked games on this list are worth playing. Because of this, the order of this list was highly contested from top to bottom. In 2009, we ranked the top 200 games of all time in our 200th issue (see sidebar). While that list was more about ranking games in terms of quality, importance to the industry, and cultural relevance, this list is just about the favorite games in the series according to the current Game Informer staff.

If you want to read more of our rankings of game series, check out our ranking of the Super Mario series and our ranking of the Assassin's Creed series.

18. Tri Force Heroes (3DS, 2014)
As a game that encouraged players to work together to solve fun puzzles and progress through a colorful world, Tri Force Heroes is a fine game. Unfortunately, when stacked against the rest of the core Zelda titles, Tri Force Heroes isn't up to snuff. The humor and puzzles serve as the highlight, but the forgettable action sequences and repetitive gameplay loop prevent it from standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the other games in Zelda's storied franchise.

17. Spirit Tracks (DS, 2009)
Spirit Tracks stands out as a different take on the series that delivered inconsistent results. Using touchscreen controls, players guide Link as he travels by train from location to location. The dungeons and combat are generally improvements over the previous Zelda game on DS, Phantom Hourglass, but by having Link ride the Spirit Tracks in the overworld, the game removes one of the best parts of the series: the exploration. When combined with an inconsistent quality of level design, this makes it one of the lesser entries in the series.

16. Four Swords (Game Boy Advance, 2002)
Taking several cues from A Link to the Past, Four Swords delivers strong gameplay, but the multiplayer focus made it difficult to play due to the hoops to jump through to connect four Game Boy Advance systems. In addition, the randomized dungeons sometimes led to poorly conceived designs. To make it even more of an uphill battle, Four Swords was packaged with the Game Boy Advance version of A Link to the Past, putting it in direct comparison with that beloved entry. Despite this, Four Swords is a strong entry point for the series, possessing surprising depth and fun multiplayer. For those who want to play it now, the Anniversary Edition added a single-player mode and additional content.

On the next page, we continue our countdown to the top Zelda game of all time.

Super Nintendo Fighting Game 'Unholy Night' Hits Kickstarter

by no-reply@retrocollect.com (Tom Charnock)

unholynighttitle

Unholy Night is a brand new 2D one-on-one fighting game for the Super Nintendo that was officially unveiled in late 2016. The game caused quite a stir once it was revealed, not only because of the format on which it was running, but also because of the credentials of the team behind it.

Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter is the result of a colloboration between various creatives behind such classic fighting game series as Samurai Shodown, King of Fighters and Art of Fighting, so you know where you stand when it comes to quality. While the game has been complete for some time now, the ability of development team Blazepro to actually release Unholy Night on a Super Nintendo cartridge has been hampered by a lack of funding; and as such the collective has turned to Kickstarter to make a physical release a reality.

unholynight3

There's no denying the rich heritage and SNK stylings that Unholy Night exudes, and those who have sampled the game have praised the fighting engine. That it is running on a Super Nintendo only adds to the allure of this title. With a funding goal of $52,500, and a production target of 1500 cartridges Blazepro have a way to go at present, but hopefully as news spreads of this new Super Nintendo game, the backers will come through.

unholynight1

There are a few things backers do need to be aware of. The first is that at present, there is only an NTSC version of Unholy Night planned, and furthermore the game will only work on either genuine NTSC Super Nintendo systems or with a Retro-Bit branded consoles such as the RetroDuo or RetroTrio. Support for other emulation systems such as the RetroN 5 has not been confirmed as yet. The team behind Unholy Night do seem to be very responsive to potential backers' questions though, and are very open about what will and will not be included at each backer level. If you'd like to know more about Unholy Night, follow the link below.

New Johto Pokemon Are Now Available to Catch in 'Pokemon GO'

by Rob Funnell

This Wednesday, Niantic finally announced that a whole new cast of Pokemon from the Johto region would be available to capture within Pokemon GO [Free], as well as an assortment of additional items, berries, and gameplay enhancements to make the augmented reality application even more immersive. While they touted a release date of 'later this week', it turns out we didn't have to wait long, as this landmark feature for Pokemon GO is now available straight within the game (a preparatory patch was released earlier today, and has to be downloaded before Gen 2 fun can begin). You now have no excuse to turn your cap backwards, grab your Poke Balls, and go out into the freezing Winter morning and capture some brand new Pokemon from the Gold, Silver and Crystal games!

In case you missed the initial announcement, this update includes the aforementioned 80+ creatures from the second generation of Pokemon games, as well as all the new evolutions for many of the previous cast of critters you may have caught - for example, that Golbat can now evolve one step further into a Crobat. All the new evolution items that are required to evolve Seadra, Scyther, Porygon2, Onix, Slowpoke, and Poliwhirl are also now attainable from PokeStops, and the Pinap and Nanab Berries make their debut, slowing a Pokemon's movement and doubling candy obtained from a creature respectively. Some neat UI and AI improvements to make capturing Pokemon even more immersive are also included, and top off what is an incredibly exciting update for Pokemon GO, and one that hopefully brings a lot of disillusioned trainers back into the fold. Download the new Johto update for Pokemon GO on the App Store now, and let us know what you think of the abundance of additions on our forum thread.

$10,000 Worth Of SNES Games Goes Missing In The Mail

Unfortunately, that plan recently hit the skids when a package worth thousands of dollars went missing in the mail.

Cancelled Arcade Game 'Primal Rage II' Now Playable With MAME

by no-reply@retrocollect.com (Tom Charnock)

primalrage21

Primal Rage garnered a moderate level of success when it hit arcades in the early 1990s, and in subsequent years Atari's prehistoric brawler was ported to pretty much every contemporary home console (and a coupe of handheld ones, too). The ports came with varying degrees of arcade accuracy, but for the most part were deemed to be worthy alternatives to other fighters of the era featuring digitised visuals. Primal Rage's main draws were the level of gore that each fight was soaked in; and the source material of dinosaurs and other beasts of prehistory tearing massive chunks out of each others faces. What's not to like?

primalrage23It appears that a sequel, Primal Rage II was underway and intended for release in arcades in late 1996. However, due to Atari's arcade division being consumed by Midway, Primal Rage II was quietly cancelled and the game was largely forgotten. According to one of Primal Rage's lead developers Chris Tang, this was due to Midway seeing Primal Rage II as a direct competitor to its own Mortal Kombat games, and the plug was pulled - so to speak. Primal Rage II, and the whole franchise in general was one of Atari's most profitable IPs, so the decision to cancel it wasn't taken lightly, says Tang. He spoke exclusively to RetroCollect and told us: "the [Primal Rage] franchise up to that point was doing amazingly - we had comics, toys, clothing...and were developing a Saturday morning cartoon even. It was Atari Games' most high profile franchise perhaps for their entire history, and other companies had things at stake - so it wasn't something that was easy for them to just cancel."

The quality of the models used in Primal Rage II appears to have improved substatially since the original game and Chris offered the following insight in the technical side of the game:

"The characters in the game were all stop motion puppets, they were amazingly detailed foam models that were formed around metal articulating armatures. They were animated by Hollywood stop motion veterans Pete Kleinow and Jon Berg. Both great guys. Pete passed away not long after the project, unfortunately. I loved seeing what they did in the lab every day; making the moves come to life, frame by frame."

Of the hardware used to power Primal Rage II and the reasons for the lack of emulation up until now, Chris explains:

"The game started on Co-Jag (Jaguar coin op) hardware - which was absolutely terrible, and honestly wasn't capable of making something competitive with other arcade fighters.  We managed to find a great hardware to migrate to in the form of PSX-arcade hardware. It could do scaling and transparency, larger sprites, better effects, and many of the things that when you see the game now...still look kind of cool. In fact, Primal Rage II does things that no other arcade game did then or even now. There were so many frames of animation that we kept the first few frames in RAM, played those when a move was performed, then loaded the rest of the frames off the hard drive in realtime as it played. All the while, the hard drive was also streaming music and the backgrounds. It was a real technological marvel. There was custom hardware built for it to make that all work, which is why it took so long for emulation to happen."

primalrage2

Indeed, Primal Rage II did remain little more than a footnote in the history of cancelled arcade games until some time after 2010, when a ROM of the unfinished game was dumped online. Unfortunatley, as described above the game could not be played as the software apparently required a bespoke piece of arcade hardware to run. All of this has recently changed though, with the development of a specialised build of MAME called MAME4RAGE2 being released. MAME4RAGE2 has been specifically created to run Primal Rage II and as you can see from the video below (from YouTuber Owlnonymous, complete with insightful commentary), the game does indeed look like an interesting prospect.

Rather than fight as the huge beasts from the original, this time the players fight as 'avatars' - humanoid characters that have the ability to momentarily morph into animalistic alter egos with increased power and approximatley 100% more claws with which to rip and tear. The creation of MAME4RAGE2 will undoubtedly come as a pleasant surprise for fans of the original Primal Rage, and it warms the cockles of our hearts that the sequel that never was is now available in fully playable, blood-soaked form.

Never accept “we’ll do the PR for your game with a value of $50,000” in your publishing contract.

by admin

Over at MobileDevMemo, Eric Seufert has written an extremely useful post on working with a publisher for your free-to-play game.

image

In particular, he highlights that a publisher should be able to commit serious cash AND serious expertise to driving user acquisition for your game. If all they are doing is appointing an external agency to do the User Acquisition for you, they are taking a lot of revenue share in return for being a manager of outsourced activities.

The whole post is worth reading, but three things leaped out at me:

  • Marketing budget should be unlocked by contractually agreed terms based on Key Performance Indicators
  • Only accept performance user acquisition spend in these numbers, not fluffy agreements (“$50k worth of PR”)
  • Be cautious of accepting cross-promotion as part of the contractual agreement: will the publisher really priritise you over their own in-house games, and are their players the right fit for your game.

We are entering the era of mobile game publishers as the Second Golden Age of Gaming comes to an end. That means there will be lots of unscrupulous publishers trying to ensnare unwary developers. There are also good publishers out there. I recommend you read Eric’s post, and seek good legal advice.
