Arnold Schwarzenegger Reveals Why He's Not In The Predator

by Dan Auty

The Predator is the long-awaited next part of the long-running sci-fi action franchise, and it is currently in production. Director Shane Black has previously stated that the movie will be a sequel to the classic 1987 Predator--however, original star Arnold Schwarzenegger won't be in there. Now the Austrian superstar has revealed why he's not involved.

No Caption Provided

In an interview with Yahoo, Schwarzenegger explained that he had read the script--and wasn't impressed with what he was being offered. "They asked me, and I read it, and I didn't like it--whatever they offered," he said. "So I'm not going to do that, no. Except if there's a chance that they rewrite it, or make it a more significant role."

Schwarzenegger's comments imply that there was at one stage a small role for him. However, last month star Boyd Holbrook suggested it would be a "gimmick" to include him in the movie. "It's real fresh. I don't think you're going to see Schwarzenegger. It would kind of make it a gimmick," he said.

The Predator also stars Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Keegan-Michael Key (Keanu, Key & Peele), Sterling K. Brown (The People v. OJ Simpson), Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse), and 10-year-old Jacob Tremblay (Room). Black has released a couple of cast images over the past few weeks--check them out here and here.

The Predator hits theaters on March 2, 2018.

The Best Ganons Ranked

by Brian Shea

Though other threats face Hyrule, Lorule, Termina, and everywhere in between, Ganon is clearly the biggest and most prominent adversary Link faces over the course of the Legend of Zelda series. He's the ultimate evil that necessitates the perpetual rebirth of the legendary hero. Since Ganon takes several incarnations over the course of the games, we decided to rank his various appearances in the Legend of Zelda franchise.

Before you proceed, be warned: this list contains spoilers for all the games listed, including Breath of the Wild.

For this list, we excluded Demise from Skyward Sword, as that isn't Ganon, as much as it is the evil force that will eventually create Ganon. We also left Hyrule Warriors Ganon off, as that version exists outside of canon. His appearance in Phantom Hourglass is also limited to a short recounting of the events of The Wind Waker, so that version is also left out.

Check out our rankings below and let us know your rankings in the comments section. For more Zelda rankings, check out our pre-Breath of the Wild ranking of every game in the series.

11. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Ganon doesn't appear in gameplay, which solidifies this appearance as his worst. However, in the story to the series' first sequel, Ganon's minions are trying to resurrect him after his death in the original Legend of Zelda, but they need Link's blood to do so. Following that logic, Ganon only appears when Link dies. It's a small role, but it's menacing enough to remind players what is at stake... plus, since Zelda II is one of the more difficult entries in the series, players see the screen pretty often.

10. Link's Awakening
Link's Awakening is a different beast from other Zelda games. It leaves Hyrule behind in favor of Koholint Island, and Ganon is not the main threat. At the end of the game, a nightmare takes the form of the evil beast, and Link must fight a formidable shadow of his biggest enemy. Because this isn't truly Ganon, and he isn't the main antagonist of the game, this version ranks low.

9. The Legend of Zelda
Ganon's premiere showcased him as a great evil, but the battle does not amount to the climax it does in other titles. The large, pig-like Ganon warps around the room, launching fireballs Link's way and only appearing for a brief moment for Link to strike. Eventually, Link is able to land the final blow and Ganon explodes into a pile of ashes. The battle is over quickly if you know what you're doing, but it still establishes Ganon as the big bad for the franchise.

8. Oracle of Ages/Seasons
The Oracle games are quite different from one another, but if you manage to complete both adventures, Link is able to face off against Ganon. His hidden nature requires you to complete both games and makes the battle feel like a special reward. The fight is also no walk in the park. He phases in and out of visibility, and appears even more massive than any 2D game before. The face-off is a solid reward for completing two underrated adventures.

7. Four Swords Adventures
For much of the game, you don't know Ganon is the main adversary of Four Swords Adventures. Later on, it's revealed that he is in fact the main threat. The final battle sees Link constantly sent to the Dark World, which is shown with a pop-up Game Boy Advance screen. Ganon is an imposing creature to face off against due to his massive size and diverse moveset.  He also features a cool death sequence thanks to the enhanced visual effects.

Head to the next page for our top six incarnations of Ganon - Remember... spoilers for recent Zelda games ahead!

PIXELKITSCH RETROFLASH 192: Paprium

by pixelkitsch

Yooka-Laylee Review Roundup

by Oscar Dayus

Yooka-Laylee, the 3D platformer from Playtonic Games, is now just a week away from its April 11 launch.

The much-anticipated platformer was backed to the tune of over $3 million during its Kickstarter campaign, at least in part due to it being a spiritual successor to Rare's Banjo-Kazooie series. In fact, many of the people behind Yooka-Laylee worked on those Rare titles, and that angle is not one Playtonic shies away from: the game's crowdfunding page claimed the project would be a "3D platformer Rare-vival."

With its launch now so close, reviews have begun to emerge. In GameSpot's review, critic Kallie Plagge said the game's likeness to its ancestors is both a blessing and a curse: "Its style of gameplay is still outdated," she wrote, "[But] it's worthy of the title of spiritual successor." Check out our full Yooka-Laylee review for more.

For a selection of other critics' opinions, check out the roundup below--or for a wider view on critical opinion, you can take a look at GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

  • Game: Yooka-Laylee
  • Developer: Playtonic Games
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch
  • Release: April 11 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC; "2017" on Nintendo Switch
  • Price: US $40 / £29 / AU $60

GameSpot -- 6/10

"Ultimately, Yooka-Laylee's best and worst aspects come directly from its predecessor. Despite attempts at modernizing the formula, its style of gameplay is still outdated, and it doesn't stay challenging or interesting for long as a result. But if you're looking for a faithful return to the Banjo-Kazooie formula, Yooka-Laylee certainly delivers--from the font to the music to the wealth of collectibles, it's worthy of the title of spiritual successor." -- Kallie Plagge [Full review]

IGN -- 7.0/10

"Yooka-Laylee contains all the pieces needed for a fun, enjoyable throwback to the 3D collectathons of the 64-bit era. The characters are charming and funny, your set of abilities is vast and entertaining, and four out of five of the worlds are fun playgrounds to explore. While it lacks the heart and polish of some of its incredible predecessors, it's a good reminder that this genre, once thought to be dead, still has some life left in it." -- Marty Sliva [Full review]

The Guardian -- 4/5

"What the game loses by not having had a Rare/Nintendo-sized QA department to smooth its rough edges it compensates for with a princely pile of ideas, and a lovely control scheme that only improves with elaboration. Younger players may be less willing to forgive its anachronisms but for its target audience, those ageing mourners of a lost fashion in games, it's a promise that’s proven worthy of backing." -- Simon Parkin [Full review]

Polygon -- 5.5/10

"Yooka-Laylee looks the part of an updated platformer, but some of its mechanics should have stayed back in the era it came from. There was a reason we haven't seen more games like Banjo Kazooie on modern platforms, and it wasn't just because Rare as we knew it was gone; its ideas were very specific to a gameplay era that we've evolved past. Fourth-wall breaking dialog, shiny characters and lush graphics can't save Yooka-Laylee from the dated framework that it's built on." -- Chelsea Stark [Full review]

High Heat Major League Baseball 2004 [GBA, Gamecube – Cancelled]

by maicrosoft@gmail.com (unseen64)

High Heat Major League Baseball was a series of baseball games published by the 3DO company. The game made its debut in 1999 and featuring the official licensed team and player names from all 30 MLB teams each year a new game was up for release. High Heat Baseball was acclaimed to be one of the best baseball games around; the game always had its focus more on genuine and realistic gameplay than on the quality of its graphics.

The 2004 edition however promised improved graphics and a new graphics engine, a new animation system and renewed motion captured player movements. The Gameboy Advance version was under development by Mobius Entertainment (later renamed Rockstar Leeds) and this edition would be the third version of the series on the handheld. For the Gamecube the game would make its first appearance and development was done by 3DO itself. 3DO announced the new installment of the game in December 2002 as they released the first images of the game and a release date was set for spring 2003, around the same date as the release of the Playstation 2, the Xbox and PC versions.

Both versions were finished and ready for release as things went wrong for 3DO in May 2003, the company faced big financial problems for quite a while now, mainly due to bad title sales, and the company now even had to file for bankruptcy and made the announcement that the team and it’s games were for sale and were finally acquired by Rockstar Games.

The Playstation 2, Xbox and PC versions just had had their release dates in March and would shortly after have been followed by the Gameboy Advance and Gamecube versions but with 3DO in serious trouble both titles were shelved for the time being and thus finally resulting into a non release for both platforms. At the 3DO bankruptcy auction in August of that year Microsoft bought all rights for the High Heat series from 3DO for an undisclosed sum. Microsoft however hasn’t developed a new title in the series so far and for now it’s even more questionable if they ever will with a baseball franchise of their own on the Xbox.

Below some screenshots of both titles; I could retrieve no promotional or gameplay footage of the cancelled versions.

Two More Xbox One Backwards Compatible Games Arrive

by Eddie Makuch

The Xbox One's backwards compatibility library expands again today with two more titles.

As announced by Microsoft's Major Nelson on Twitter, today's additions to the Xbox 360-on-Xbox One catalog include Sid Meier's Civilization: Revolution and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet.

If you already own these games on Xbox 360, they should show up automatically on your Xbox One. If not, you can buy them on your console or through the Xbox Store links below.

In other backwards compatibility news, Microsoft's Bill Stillwell posted an detailed message last month in which he discussed the technical and operational considerations for games in the catalog. People have been clamoring for Call of Duty: Black Ops II, but it hasn't happened yet.

"I can't underestimate the complexity of the non-technical part of this," Stillwell said. "We are in some cases reviewing licensing agreements that are a decade old, evaluating the impact of new technology on those agreements, and then negotiating with a host of other parties for terms to get renewed/changed. This is not a quick process most times."

You can read the full message below, but remember that it's from March 14.

There are more than 320 games in the Xbox One backwards compatibility catalog--you can see them all here.

New Tales From The Making Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

by Peter Brown

Adapting The Legend of Zelda to the structure of a modern, open world may be Nintendo's greatest feat of the last decade; to say nothing of Breath of the Wild's role in fueling sales of Switch consoles. But perhaps more notable than what Breath of the Wild means for Zelda or Switch is the unshakable impact Nintendo has made on the future of open world games. Breath of the Wild is almost without compare, and any open world game in its wake will no doubt be measured against it in some way. For the first time in years, Nintendo is a trendsetter.

As you might expect, creating such an ambitious game was a monumental undertaking. As Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma revealed to us at E3 last year, Breath of the Wild was the biggest Nintendo project to date. When you consider the enormity of its world, the litany of mechanics at play, and the seamless yet varied atmosphere that connects it all, it wasn't surprising when Aonuma felt challenged to keep such a large team--consisting of both Nintendo and Monolith Soft. employees--focused on a single vision:

Nintendo Producer, Eiji Aonuma
Nintendo Producer, Eiji Aonuma

"When we're building something, we all have to have a shared perspective and goal, and it's important that everyone has this concrete image in [their] mind. When you have this many people, you may say the same thing to everybody, but everyone has a different perspective on it. If we made a game with that, we would have a very broken and disjointed game. One of the biggest challenges is making sure we all have a shared vision."

Breath of the Wild shipped, and by all accounts, Aonuma met his challenge well. Whether you're catching butterflies or infiltrating the ransacked halls of a once-great castle, Breath of the Wild consistently reflects a unified spirit. Around the game's release last month, we had the chance to chat with three Breath of the Wild directors about their experiences crafting this incredible adventure; about the events that transpired while Aonuma fought to unite his own kingdom at Nintendo.

Hidemaro Fujibayashi is the director of Breath of the Wild, but he got his start working on Zelda games back at Capcom during the Game Boy Color days, directing both The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. During our chat, though he did most of the talking, Fujibayashi sat between technical director Takuhiro Dohta and art director Satoru Takizawa--cohorts that have worked closely on Zelda games like Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD. Though Aonuma and Shigeru Miyamoto are the names most people associate with Zelda, the three developers that sat across from us arguably deserve a lion's share of the credit that's been laid at the feet of Nintendo's more prominent personalities.

Breath of the Wild is an unwavering adventure set in a world dominated by nature, where elements and objects become the subjects of experiments as you piece together how the world works, and what you can do within that ruleset. Slowly but surely, you learn how to control fire, lightning, gravity, and magnetism. As Fujibayashi was quick to point out, giving the player freedom to experiment was the solution to keeping players engaged while exploring a massive world--one practically devoid of typical open-world filler quests.

Satoru Takizawa, Takuhiro Dohta, and Hidemaro Fujibayashi.
Satoru Takizawa, Takuhiro Dohta, and Hidemaro Fujibayashi.

"So the easiest way to go about addressing that problem--of not tiring out the player or boring the player--would be to add puzzles here or add elements there," said Fujibayashi. "But then we would have to make all of that, and that's a lot of resources that we would have to devote to that." The now famous multiplicative gameplay was the answer, he added: "So say we make one, two, or three, different calculations. [Between] those calculations there are things that occur. So it looks like we calculated for all of these things, but only just the three."

"We tried to avoid [creating scenarios] where there's only one possible outcome," he continued. "We tried to remove those as much as possible, and this ideal was really well understood by all of the designers and artists that design terrains and landscapes."

The game that resulted from this concept no doubt thrives because of it, and even a month after its release, players around the world continue to make and share their discoveries. What about the people responsible for crafting the game's collection of cause-and-effect mechanics? Even among Nintendo's staff, occasional surprises delighted the team despite their unrivaled familiarity with the game. According to Takizawa: "one thing we saw at E3 was one of the NOA demonstrating staff, just in their downtime figured out a way to use magnesis to make themselves fly in a way, and we're like, 'Okay, we hadn't thought of that.' We all had to go back and try it ourselves."

"At times we would even show Mr. Miyamoto once a week what we'd been working on, because if we don't do that, and then go face-to-face and present the idea, tables might be flipped!'"

He tried to explain the trick, which we were unfortunately unable to replicate. "If you laid two of the metal platforms on top of each other, and got them just in the right position, you could use one of them to lift the other and kind of make yourself float." He relayed another surprise, this time from watching a new player tinker with the game. "We also saw, and I think this was just an E3 attendee," he recalled, that used objects to fashion their own catapult and then fling themselves across the landscape. That also looked pretty fun. And that made me feel, 'Yeah, this freedom we wanted to give players is really coming through here.'"

Breath of the Wild isn't short on challenges or solutions to overcome them, but it wasn't surprising to hear that some ideas were left by the wayside. Takizawa chimed in with one such example that lasted far into development, and the reasoning behind its ultimate disappearance.

"Until about halfway through the development, we had a spec where you could take your weapon and stab it into a wall. When your stamina gauge was dwindling you could stab the weapon and kind of hang out and rest there." Given the emphasis on climbing in the game, it was surprising to hear this option was removed. The reason? Miyamoto's disapproval.

Nintendo Director/Creative Fellow, Shigeru Miyamoto
Nintendo Director/Creative Fellow, Shigeru Miyamoto

"So the answer," according to Fujibayashi," is that Mr. Miyamoto heard of the concept he said, 'You can't stand on the tip of a sword. This is strange.' And then we explained, "No no no, you stab it in." Then he's like, 'No, it's not going to work.' Another idea is that it's very hard to actually stab a sword into a big piece of rock. We considered that you can stab them into cracks or crevices in the wall, but then you can't freely use that feature anywhere you want, so I decided not to implement it."

Miyamoto may not have been directly involved in creating gameplay concepts himself, but by the sound of it, he kept a close eye on everything the team was doing. "So starting from the early stages of development we had been constantly showing Mr. Miyamoto our progress. At times we would even show him once a week what we'd been working on, because if we don't do that, and then go face-to-face and present the idea, tables might be flipped!'"

Though the team had plenty of leaders and a judicious overseer, Breath of the Wild is a product of the group, and the life experiences its members brought to the team were a key component of its success, particularly when it came to interacting with the environment. Fujibayashi drove this point home."The staff that was involved in creating the game, they all have their own hobbies. Some of them like camping or outdoor sports, and we tried to make it a point that they take all of the experiences that they have in their lives and drop it into the game."

When we told the directors how the game matched up with our own meaningful experiences in nature, Fujibayashi beamed. "Hearing you express that you have this emotion that comes up [while playing], that you haven't felt since you went hiking, makes me really happy because I feel like we were able to convey what we really wanted to."

Part of the allure of hiking through woods or over complicated mountain passes is the joy of discovering something that makes you look at your environment, and maybe the world at large, in new ways. But even in our day to day lives, we experience a version of discovery on a smaller scale. According to Takizawa, "One of the things that we were considering was to incorporate this phenomena, which is very common for us in Japanese culture. Every day you take the same road to school and back, but on the way you're like, 'Oh look, I remember this guy over here has a dog so I'm gonna go over there and pet that dog. And then over here, there's this field I want to explore. There's some plants I want to pluck, or there are things I want to do that make that road itself interesting.' We said, 'Let's create an environment that does just that.'"

"And it's not just the terrain," he continued. "It's all the items and elements within the terrain...you soon get distracted by this shiny thing over here, that cool thing over there. And again, we had that very active conversation to create that world. So kids really like stopping to pick the weeds or stopping to smell the flowers, so we wanted to create a world that not only enabled them to do that but enticed them to do so."

#PizzaConnection 1 & 2 are now out on #Steam as well! Go and get it as single #games or as a #bundle and #save 10%! https://t.co/hbL3yqyZhb pic.twitter.com/EUyrqbn5aE

— AssembleTeam (@AssembleTeam) 5. April 2017

  • Darksiders II (PS3) – Awakened by the End of Days, Death, the most feared of the legendary Four Horsemen, embarks on a quest to redeem his brother’s name. Become the terrifying force which everything fears but nothing can escape.
  • MX vs. ATV Supercross Encore (PS4) – Rip, jump and scrub your way to victory with over 35 tracks in this vastly extended version! Only the Encore edition features the brand new Rhythm Racing mode, extra outdoor Nationals tracks, and exclusive Waypoint races in open world maps.

PlayStation Plus Vs. Xbox Games With Gold – Who Is Winning The Free Games War?

by Zak Wojnar

In 2010, Sony launched PlayStation Plus, a $49.99 per year ($59.99 as of September 2016) premium subscription service which offered a variety of complimentary games to users. The number of games initially varied from month to month, but, starting in July 2014, they streamlined the process so that six games a month (two each for PS4, PS3, and Vita) are on offer for subscribers. If users add the game to their library before it is taken down the next month, then they can play the game for as long as they remain Plus members, even if they quit the service and then return at a later date.

In 2013, Microsoft followed suit, adding complimentary games to Xbox Live Gold members; Xbox One games follow the PS Plus model, being unavailable to play if your subscription lapses, but Xbox 360 titles remain in users’ libraries in perpetuity; they’re yours to keep forever.

With that in mind, which service has enjoyed a better selection of titles: Games With Gold or PlayStation Plus? We went through the painstaking process of finding numbers, putting them in charts, and analyzing the results in an effort to answer that very question.

We looked at the data from the past two years, comparing Plus and Gold across various metrics, including a game’s age, Metacritic score, and platform exclusivity. In the interest of fairness, we only factored in PS3, PS4, 360, and Xbox One games. We chose not to analyze Vita games, as Microsoft has no equivalent handheld. However, if a game is cross-buy across Vita and one of Sony’s home consoles, then we included it in our analysis.

Game Quantity
In 2015 and 2016, PlayStation Plus Subscribers received 118 games across PS3 and PS4. During that same period, Microsoft delivered 93 Xbox titles to Xbox Live Gold members. For those keeping count, that’s 25 fewer games than on PlayStation. In terms of sheer quantity, Sony has Microsoft beat by a wide margin.

Game Quality
Over the two-year period, the average Metacritic score for PlayStation Plus offerings was 74.6. The highest-scoring title was Mass Effect 2 (94), followed closely by Journey (92) and Limbo (90). Some of the lowest-scoring titles included Datura (57) and Pumped BMX+ (56). The dubious recognition for the lowest-scoring PlayStation Plus title is a tie between Medal of Honor Warfighter and Table Top Racing, which both scored a mere 55 at the critical aggregate site.

Click For Full-Size

On the Microsoft side, the average Metacritic score was nearly identical, clocking in at 74.8. The highest scoring games were Gears of War 2 and BioShock Infinite, which both landed lofty 93s. Runner-ups included The Walking Dead Season 1 (92) Rayman Legends (91), and Gears of War 3 (91). Of course, Microsoft also offered a handful of stinkers. The lowest-rated title was Goat Simulator, which sits at paltry 53 on Metacritic, even lower than Medal of Honor. Other underwhelming titles include the co-op shooter Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel (54), Zheroes (57), and Tron Evolution (58).

Next: more comparisons between the free games of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Games With Gold.

Kairosoft's 'Pocket Arcade Story' On Sale for the First Time, 'Pocket Academy' Now $0.99

by Rob Funnell

While Game Dev Story [$4.99] is undoubtedly one of my favorite mobile simulator titles of all time, Kairosoft's subsequent output has been relatively hit and miss since they burst onto the App Store all the way back in 2010. While the developers have experimented with numerous different monetisation models over the years, the core experiences have stayed relatively consistent, which means that only the games that really resonate with your interests and nostalgic dreams really grab your full attention. Pocket Arcade Story [$1.99] is one such title - through a gaming theme not too dissimilar from the magic of Game Dev Story, you're tasked with creating and curating an arcade complex, from deciding which machines are placed where, to meticulous specifics such as how strong the crane game's claws are. With a number of new mechanics and a greater emphasis on perceptible challenge, Pocket Arcade Story is a definite highlight of Kairosoft's recent releases, and is now on sale for the first time for a bargain price of only $1.99.

pocket arcade story 1 pocket arcade story 2

While this initial three dollar reduction to Pocket Arcade Story is perhaps the highlight - especially considering the game is fully premium with no IAPs whatsoever - Kairosoft aren't happy with merely slashing the price of only one of their releases. Pocket Academy [$0.99] is also featuring in this unspecified promotion, and while the school simulator is significantly older than Pocket Arcade Story (the former released way back in June 2011), the former is on sale for its lowest price in over five years at $0.99. In our review around the title's original release, we awarded Pocket Academy with an emphatic five star rating - whether it holds up to this day, and in the midst of many similar Kairosoft games that have launched since, is debatable. However, fans of the developer's back catalogue will know what to expect, and Pocket Academy is a solid simulator title that has a lot of content for its dollar price of entry. Download Pocket Arcade Story and Pocket Academy at their discounted prices now before they revert back to normal, and let us know what you think of these bargain Kairosoft simulators on their respective forum threads.
