The Problem with EULAs

by schneier

Some apps are being distributed with secret Bitcoin-mining software embedded in them. Coins found are sent back to the app owners, of course.

And to make it legal, it's part of the end-user license agreement (EULA):

COMPUTER CALCULATIONS, SECURITY: as part of downloading a Mutual Public, your computer may do mathematical calculations for our affiliated networks to confirm transactions and increase security. Any rewards or fees collected by WBT or our affiliates are the sole property of WBT and our affiliates.

This is a great example of why EULAs are bad. The stunt that resulted in 7,500 people giving Gamestation.co.uk their immortal souls a few years ago was funny, but hijacking users' computers for profit is actually bad.

Telepathwords: A New Password Strength Estimator

by schneier

Telepathwords is a pretty clever research project that tries to evaluate password strength. It's different from normal strength meters, and I think better.

Telepathwords tries to predict the next character of your passwords by using knowledge of:
  • common passwords, such as those made public as a result of security breaches
  • common phrases, such as those that appear frequently on web pages or in common search queries
  • common password-selection behaviors, such as the use of sequences of adjacent keys

Password-strength evaluators have generally been pretty poor, regularly assessing weak passwords as strong (and vice versa). I like seeing new research in this area.

Images of Razer 'Kazuyo' Game Controller Leaked

by Richard Padilla
An image of what might be a MFi (Made for iPhone) controller from computer peripheral manufacturer Razer has been leaked on Twitter by @evleaks, who has been known to provide reliable images in the past.

razerkazuyofront
The enclosure controller, reportedly named the Razer Kazuyo, appears to wrap around the iPhone, adding face buttons, shoulder buttons, and a directional pad on either side of the phone. This layout is similar to other iOS game controllers such as the Logitech Powershell and the MOGA Ace Power, which were both released in last month. Unlike both controllers however, the Razer Kazuyo includes the ability to tilt the iPhone up, allowing for better viewing angles and easier access. razerkazuyoback
It is not known when exactly the Razer Kazuyo will be released, but it is likely that it will be compatible with a growing list of iOS games upon availability. Currently, games such as Dead Trigger 2, Asphalt 8: Airborne, and Bastion offer controller support, with additional developers pledging to build controller support into their apps now that controller hardware is available to consumers.

Two Random Things That Made Me Smile

by Greg Mankiw
On New England frugality:
Bostonians still tell the story of the respectable society matron who was crossing the Common one day and ran into an old college chum she hadn’t seen for years. The matron was dismayed to see that her friend was obviously engaged in the world’s oldest profession. “My dear,” she said, “whatever has happened to you?” “Well,” said her friend, “it was either this or dip into capital.”
On a child's view of marriage:
How can a stranger tell if two people are married?
You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.  - Derrick, age 8

Comics Vs. Cases

by Robin Hanson

Most of you have probably seen typical “comic book” style stories. Or action movies, which usually have a related style. I’m not saying all graphic novels or active movies follow the same style or all bad styles. I’m just saying there is a recognizable trend among typical popular stories with dramatic settings. Stories that try hard to engage wide audiences differ from reality in consistent ways.

A different style of settings and events are found in histories and other case studies. Of course such writings are not always accurate, and they often focus on the real events that are most like dramatic stories. Even so, if you read a lot of case studies you’ll notice that their settings and events differ consistently from those in comic stories. Which shouldn’t be terribly surprising.

The more surprising thing is that I consistently see “futurists” touting best guess future scenarios that sound more like comics than cases. Not that their scenarios are exactly like typical comics. But if you had to judge which they were more like, typical comics or typical cases, you’d have to say they sounded more like typical comics. Worse, these futurists don’t seem embarrassed by this appearance, or go out of their way to excuse it. It is as if they don’t expect their readers to notice or care.

To me, these are very bad signs. Yes real events can sometimes be so dramatic that they seem in some ways like comics. But even then most of the details aren’t very comic-like. And the lack of embarrassment or excuses seems especially an bad sign. You should always be suspicious of folks who target their arguments at  the ignorant, instead of at those who know enough to criticize effectively.

For example, if you proposed a new energy source, and it looked on the surface like a perpetual motion machine, it would look bad if you didn’t at some point say “yes I know this looks like perpetual motion machine, but here’s why it really isn’t.” Ignoring the issue would suggest you don’t expect your audience to know enough to worry about it. When should make those of us who do know wonder why you aren’t making your case to a wiser audience.

Now if you’ve read a lot of a futurists and never noticed that many of their scenarios sound a lot like comics, let me suggest that you stop reading futurists for a while and start reading case studies. You really have no business trying to evaluate the accuracy of future scenarios if you don’t have a decent grasp on the difference between engaging fiction and typical boring facts.

elizabitchtaylor:

On December 6th, 1989, shortly before five ‘o’ clock and the end of classes before Christmas break, fourteen female engineering students were shot and killed at the École Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec by a gunman who claimed he was “fighting feminism”.

The massacre stands as one of the most tragic hate crimes in Canadian history.

King James Programming

by Soulskill
Jah-Wren Ryel writes "What do you get when you train a Markov chain on the King James Bible and a copy of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs? King James Programming — a tumblr of auto-generated pseudo-scripture (or pseudo-compsci lessons). Some examples: -- 'The LORD is the beginning (or prefix) of the code for the body of the procedure.' -- 'More precisely, if P and Q are polynomials, let O1 be the order of blessed.' -- ''In APL all data are represented as arrays, and there shall they see the Son of man, in whose sight I brought them out.'"

scalesofperception: Freedom Ship | Via The Freedom Ship is 25...

Albener Pessoa

If it ever floats it could become a new country. (via Firehose)

scalesofperception:

Freedom Ship | Via

The Freedom Ship is 25 storeys high and would feature a casino, an art gallery, a park and a shopping centre. The concept, designed by a Florida-based company would cost $10billion if was commissioned to be built. The vessel could house 50,000 people but it would contain additional space to hold an extra 30,000 visitors. The ship would constantly sail around the world - doing a full circuit every two years - but would be too large to enter any ports.

Powered by solar panels and wave energy, the city would navigate from the east coast of the US across the Atlantic to Europe and into the Mediterranean.

It would loop back and sail around the Cape of Good Hope at the tip of Africa and across to Australia. Heading into East Asia, it would steer across the Pacific before spending the end of the year on the west coast of North America. It would chase the summer sun into South America.

If completed, the city will be 750ft at the beam, 350ft high and 4,500ft in length – four times longer than the Queen Mary II cruise ship which measures 1,132ft.

Imagem da Virgem Maria defecando provoca indignação na Espanha

by Carlos Ruas

Build a Camera With Bigshot

by Jessica

via Make.

Cool post on Makezine about Bigshot Cameras, now available on the Adafruit site!

Building your own digital camera from a kit is a fantastic way to learn about optics, mechanics, electromagnetism, electronics and image processing. Shree Nayar, a professor of computer science at Columbia University, is the creator of Bigshot, a build-it-yourself camera kit meant for learning, creativity, and fun. I had the chance to talk to Shree at World Maker Faire New York in September as the camera kit made its Maker Faire debut.

After building the camera and learning how it works, you can then experiment with framing, lighting, motion, and lens selection.

“What’s unique about the kit is that it allows you to juxtapose an experience in the sciences with an experience in the arts,” said Shree. It also has a crank on the side to charge the battery. “The whole idea here is to include features that would expose the kids to not just how a camera works, but rather a variety of science and engineering concepts related to the camera.”

Sales surge for educational electronics company Adafruit with Bitcoin

Sales surge for educational electronics company Adafruit with Bitcoin @ CoinDesk.

…in a curious twist, at least one customer who decided to pay with bitcoin used the very same coins they mined using Adafruit’s bitcoin mining tutorial. Fried said:

“The coolest thing for us is a customer told us they made a bitcoin miner using our tutorial, mined coins and then spent them on Adafruit.”

The company first entered the bitcoin world six months ago with the PiMiner, a Raspberry Pi-powered bitcoin miner. From there, the decision to implement bitcoin payments was a natural progression for Adafruit’s team.
“We all considered mining coins a fun math puzzle and hobby,” said Fried.
